About This Game

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

This is a troubled game from a troubled developer. Check out what happened to the reddit or what has happened in the steam forums for many details. Sauropod and it's community managers have a history of manipulating information, deleting posts about the state of the game, they have even deleted their own posts when it favors them.

The last community manager, Box, was fired for doing this but the new community manager, Ben, is doing similarly. He even called dissenters members of a "freak show" for pointing out the lies and deception. Since it is likely to be deleted, here is part of my last couple posts on the forum including quotes from Ben:

Ben_SuaropodStudio: "I will delete this thread."
"I won't let this thread be turned into yet another freak show"
"It’s not about not listening to people concerns nor it’s about control."
"It's a job. I'm simply putting things in context and making sure that the right information circulates."

If you say something the community manager does not agree with you get called a freak[en.wikipedia.org] and are threatened with deletion if you do not curculate "the right information".

So no, you should not buy this game nor any other game. Not until you read an honest discussion about what you are considering parting money for.

There is no honest discussion of the game. Dissenters are crushed, banned, and their posts deleted. Even posting a bad review has gotten people banned from the forums in the past. The honest truth is it has appeared to be stuck in development hell for years. There has been many broken promises and deletions of those promises. It was a game with potential that was squandered on who knows what as there was virtually no visible change for three years. Development has ramped up as they intend to release it early 2016. For any rational person it just looks like too little too late as all of the features presented in the trailer are still not in the game.

Beware.

This game is fun, no doubt I had fun for the first minutes I played. This game was awesome but then, a ♥♥♥♥ing month later I hadn't played in a while so I decided to update it to see what was new.
Nothing. At all.
This game was as bad as I am in bed. And that ♥♥♥♥ is ♥♥♥♥ing horrible.
1/10-Would be a 10 if they actually cared for the game

Castle Story has potential to be a pretty cool game, unfortunately it looks more and more like that will never happen. Development is painfully slow, I think maybe the devs just get together once a month for a few hours. They just keep redoing the same features over and over, never getting it right or even making any noticeable difference.

As it stands at the time of this review (and probably for several months to come) the game has very little to offer. One playthrough of survival will probably be all you need to see everything there is. As far as creative mode, there are much better sandbox games out there that are much less frustrating in ways a game should not be frustrating (pathing, glitches, etc).

Maybe come back in a couple years and see if they've made any progress toward doing this idea justice, but don't bother buying it now. They've had more than enough time to deliver but they're not even trying.

This game was kickstarted 3 years ago with $700,000, almost 9 times more than they asked for. The game has hardly changed since then.

essentially vaporware, avoid at all cost

Now i dont mean to be a downer. I completely understand that there are only a small development team, ect, ect. but i bought this game over a year ago and i havent noticed any changes since i last saw it.

I honestly like the concept of this game and i dont mind the early access thing at al. However this game still has to reach the point where it is playable.

I wish the developpers all the luck in the world in their quest to finish this game but if one of my friends would ask me if he or she should buy this game then i would say: not yet. which is the same advice i give the reader of this review.

At the moment i cannot in good faith recommend this game to anyone. It is not playable at the moment and i fear that this will not change any time soon. If the developpers actually begin to make some notable progress on this game then i will be more then happy to adjust this review. But at the moment i have to say no...

I did notice that much of the progress on this game appears to be focussed on the engine. which is an understandable way of development. But at the same time there are ofcourse a lot of people who spend money on this game and dont know as much about programming and game design as proffesionals would. (completely understandable ofcourse) and those people are going to end up feeling cheated. hence my advice.

summary: Dont buy it. Keep it in your whishlist until it is finished and then buy it. Because the concept of the game is great and you are going to have a great time once it is playble. Castle story is scheduled for release in 2016 (as far as i know at least) so guys please keep this game in mind when that day comes
