Update: Version 0.5.1

Hello everybody!

First of all thank you very much for the feedback you gave us on the update 0.5. Your suggestions and reports are greatly appreciated by all the members of the team in addition to allowing us to continue to improve Castle Story. The next months promises to be particularly exciting for us as we approach the release date and we hope that it's an enthusiasm that you also share. Your support ensures that we can continue our work on the game and for this we are extremely grateful.

Thanks to your reports we have been able to identify some bugs for which we now offer fixes in patch 0.5.1.

Multiplayer

We introduced the multiplayer mode back into Castle Story with version 0.5. Unfortunately, some of you had difficulties login in or were simply unable play with your friends. Other issues could also be encountered. Since we released the last update, we've been hard at work on fixing the multiplayers issues. We are now introducing a bunch of fixes which ensure that most of these problems are now resolved. It's a new mode so if you're having problems, don't hesitate to let us know on our forums.

Improvements
  • In the quarry task you can now choose on which side the stairs will appear with the handle system.
  • 3 difficulty levels of are now available in survival mode (easy, normal and hard).
  • Sandbox survival is now enable in the settings submenu (normal difficulty level).
  • Improved wood texture quality.
Bug fixes
  • Tweaked the timer of the merge back to 2 minutes instead of 30 second.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bricktron that they were passing through the terrain if you place a brick on their head.
  • Fixed an issue where the toggle for the options of the stockpiles was toggling on the release of the Right-Click even if you did Left-click on it to activate/deactivate it.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bricktron passing through the terrain if they were going down one voxel and that voxel get destroyed right before they start the animation of going down.
  • Fixed an issue where it was impossible to destroy Catapult/Stockpile/Barrel/Lantern with the Anti-Blueprint.
  • Fixed an issue where the Bricktron was passing through the terrain when they were doing the get-up animation(At certain time).
  • Fixed the invisible resources on stockpiles.
  • Fixed a visual bug when Bricktrons were switching planks and logs.
  • Fixed an issue where the Corruptron was not throwing any rocks.
  • Fixed the scrollbar in the resolution menu while being in-game.
  • Fixed the indestructible bricks issue around your crystal.
  • Fixed multiples issues with Linux.
Known Issues
  • If you're saving your game while a Bricktron is flailing, it will break that save.
  • There are visual problems in the terrain for Mac, Linux and Windows10, but they can be fixed in the main menu options by setting Terrain Acceleration to never.
  • In Linux, if all your Bricktrons are named Bricktron (Clone), reinstall the game. This is an issue with Steam’s content servers.
  • In multiplayer, Quarries and Tunnels tend to cause de-syncs. Survival Mines however are stable.
  • There are lag spikes every so often.
  • A huge landscape project will cause lag.
  • It is currently not possible to split a construction task.
  • Due the the big amount of changes since 0.4.0, the save upgrader doesn’t always properly convert old saves.

About This Game

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

No, no, no, just no!
The way this game is developed is just horrible! Months without updates or proper information and the devs somehow dont get their ♥♥♥♥ done. Sad, because there was some good potential, but you better stay away from this train wreck.

Pros: It has shiny lighting props

Cons:
-Poor Performance
-AI is dysfunctional at best, and literally not working at worst
-Build menu somehow gets worse with each UI 'improvement'
-Developers practice an... interesting tactic of updating the game with minor
changes that mostly look good in abbreviated preview videos but have little
to no impact on the game itself just before steam sales hit.
-Makes DayZ Standalone look like a well-developed game.

tl;dr don't buy it, even if it's on sale for 99% off.

I saw Castle Story on Kickstarter back in 2012 and wished I could have kick-started it, the concept was new and interesting, the graphics looked fresh and pretty and it looked like a fun game that would go somewhere. Well, 4 years down the line it still looks exactly like it did 4 years ago on that Kickstarter page.

As far as I see, there is no real 'gameplay' to it other than plan a castle, dig some quarry's or mines and then watch the little yellow dudes AI fail to get it them the build zone or even properly drop resources off.

Instead, you'll spend your game time watching your workers swap resources around with one another rather than building anything. It almost seems like they tried to implement a bucket brigade AI... which would work great if they gave the poor little workers a little more logic so they didn't run the exact same path when on the same task - because they then spend more time swapping resources between themselves and 'finding paths to blueprint' instead of running over there.

The problems around building make it really hard to even attempt the 'wave survival' game modes - because its takes so long to get a simple wall around it and the damage enemies do (even on easy) wipes out your meagre combat units really quickly (I survived 60 kills ~8 waves before losing but still didn’t even have a simple wall up because the yellow dudes couldn't decide or work out how to get places)

The final straw for me was putting 6 workers on a large build task. They'd keep stopping at the build site, even though there were plenty of resources and lots of room for movement. They just all kept saying they were going to the same pile of resources which I can only assume meant all 6 of their poor little AI's were clashing and blocking one another... without anyone actually moving!

Some bullet points of what bugged me the most (Version 0.5.1):

- The UI is terrible. Every action in-game relies on a right click and hold - it's not intuitive, it’s not clear and it’s not even explained to you. I had to go find a video tutorial on basic camera movement and building because it was so annoyingly unclear. Actions should speak for themselves and not have to be searched for.

- Speaking of UI, sorting what materials can be placed on a storage pad is ridiculous. If you want to make it specifically wood, it takes 5 right click, hold, and selects to set it so. You need a lot of storage, so multiply that by the number of space you want... it’s just plain silly.

- For a game about building castles its surprising tedious to build anything in (let alone a castle), you need more workers to get things done faster but the more workers you have the slower the build goes because they spend time bumping into one another and sometimes they just decide to have a stop work meeting.

- The game constantly lags and has miniature seizures for a few seconds every few seconds...

- As outlined, the AI is just shoddy. There are a few simple things that would make it miles more efficient... the best being a complete overhaul of their path-finding algorithm and how they interact with one another (not swapping resources every damn time they bump into each other!)

- The game could benefit from a 'speed up time' button... a lot.

Overall: 3/10

Just so much wasted potential.

Avoid at all costs - don't be fooled! There are better games out there!

You never know what you are going to get when you buy into an Early Access game. Sometimes you help fund the next gem of a game, like Prison Architect, who probably wouldn't have had the capital to make such a game if it weren't for EA, but on the other hand, sometimes your money gets flushed into the eternal purgatory that is commonplace in EA and you never get your money back, The Dead Linger.

Castle Story feels more like The Dead Linger side of the EA. No, the makers haven't thrown in the towel yet, but there really hasn't been much improvement in the past year, content or performance wise. I honestly hope that I am wrong, and if that is the case, if they finish this game with a stable, playable, fun state, I will change this review, but at the moment, I could not and would not recommend this game to anyone.
