About This Game

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

Very neat concept but the game suffers from unplayable frame rate drops.

On medium settings, game starts ok at ~ 30 fps, unfortunately it only gets worse as the game progresses. Searching threads for relief, I found dev posts all the way back to 2013 where they promised optimization, well, 3 years later, this thing chugs on my rig like I'm trying to play latest gen FPS with graphics set to ultra.

Also, what's the deal with this game controller GUI? Can I have a simple "build" menu with all the items displayed in one overlay?

The bad:

* For a simple voxel game, graphical performance is horrible.
* GUI - Keyboard / mouse unfriendly.
* AI - Doesn't handle pathing issues / conflicts very well.

The good:

* If you can overlook the 3 above, the game can be pretty fun.

The ability to let the player be creative in the making of forts and castles is a very important feature in a game like this... and it is done well here.

I bought Castle Story a while ago (before many of the current feature were implimented) and had fun creating catles and defending them. A couple months ago I rediscovered Castle Story and had a blast with the new features like Conquest Mode.

While playing the game I didn't really encounter any bugs or glitches with the game.

Pros:
-Allows Creativity
-Interesting setting (on floating islands in a sort of isolated place)
-Different features allow for more types of play style.
-Challenging yet exciting

Cons (some might just be my computers fault):
-while building castles I find it difficult to build or fix things on the inside of the structure
-when I have been playing for a bit and the waves in Invasion Mode start to get more difficult I find that I need more Bricktrons, but my gameplay gets a bit choppy when I get to around 7-8 Bricktrons. When I get to 10 or more Bricktrons my computer just can't handle it and will either crach or become very difficult to play.
-when I put my archers up on the walls they will do fine unless I choose to fight with my swordsmen too. Then I have to micro-manage them to make sure they don't hit friendly troops.

Overall: Castle Story is a good game and is worth the money. If I had to give it a rating it would be 8/10 (my rating will probably be higher when the game has been completed) still though if you have the creativity and a computer that can run the game well, then for you it could be way better than you might think.

As a little note for the end of my review I would like to be the selfish player who puts out a few ideas that I have no right to demand for but would still like to see. :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) It would interesting to see a way to play as the Corruptrons either in singleplayer or multiplayer.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) A way to save creations would save a lot of time as well as giving the players a way to hurry past the parts of the game he/she may find tedious.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) In Sandbox mode it is super fun to just go nuts and build a bunch of stuff but it would be interesting to see how such creations would fair in Invasion Mode, but it can be boring to have to rebuild them block by block (especially if they are large creations). So a way to put Corruptrons in Sandbox Mode would be fun and allow players to test their creations before starting an Invasion Mode playthrough.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) It would be fun to be able to rename the Bricktrons to names that are more personal or funny.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thats my thoughts on Castle Story. I look forward to seeing how the game developes.
I hope this review has been helpful. Thank You for reading it.

-Mr.Duck

P.S.: I love the Castle Story website.

A promising game, I enjoy playing it so far though there are some issues like pathfinding, memory leaks increasing ram ussage and minor bugs, overall I expect them to be worked out over the course of development aswell as their news on upcoming patches are very promising, the next one at the time of this review will speed up action time aswell as pathfinding for the AI which will be very nice. This game is fun and challenging but what else would you want from a castle survival game ^^

If anything keep on eye on the game to see when the development of the game reaches a point in which you are happy with it to buy, I am happy with my purchase and look forward to future patches to make it even better. I also do not know if the price will incrase after release but it is something to look into if you plan to wait.

oh and a tip, two stone thick walls are useful aswell as putting bricks behind your archers to stop them being tossed off the walls when the corupt throw their rocks at them.

I have had this game for a pretty long time. I followed it for most of it's development. I got to say the game had some slow progress, but after I turned it back on recently I realized how much it changed. Lots of new things were added and the entire game looks sleek. There are still some features I'm waiting for, like a button were you can place down enemies in sandbox. However, the game is perfect for people who love biulding, destroying large towers, etc...

A few years ago, they were deleting topics that disagreed with them from the forums, and development looked dead. I recently took a look to see if it had gotten anywhere, and it's really taken off. There's weekly developer livestreams, great interaction with players, and new content, bug fixes and optimizations rolling in regularly.

I love the freedom you have to mess around with the world, to create or change chokepoints as it fits your strategy. On the side of things to improve, to me, it feels a bit too fast paced as I like to think things through well and make sure everything's 100% right. And the game doesn't really like the scale I try to make things in.

The game is really cool, fun, somewhere difficult, but it's still good. Yes, it requires improvements, yes, sometimes lags, but still it is not a bad game! As for me: This is the second game in importance after the military strategy of Warcraft. Great physics, convenient operation, nice graphics and a charming little bricktrons. Сomplete freedom of action makes it possible to dream and to realize this dream in the game. I think its not too big price for this masterpiece !

Ok so I really like this game however there are some problems that need addressing, bugs.
1. Builders getting stuck for no apparent reason
2. Builders not following orders, standing around idle for minutes at a time before doing anything.
3. Other players being able to unlock your doors in multiplayer.
4. Builders not taking from the nearest stockpile.

If these bugs get fixed it would be amazing!

This game is so annoying, I don't know if it's because the updates, or if the game is just crappy itself. But it's really buggy.
I spend over 2 hours trying to figure out their controls, and their YouTube videos and Steam Forums didn't help. The forums kept saying one thing:

The controls are confusing and awkward.

After 1 hour of trying to figure out the game mechanics, I gave up and played another game instead.
Unless they fix this game in later updates, don't buy it if you don't want to waste $20 of hard earned money.

Overall a decent game.
There are a lot of things to love about this game. I love the feeling of building up my defenses just waiting for the enemies to attack. The physicals are fun and entertaining and they make building an interesting task. The lighting really shines and provides a smooth gloss over the landscape that make it glow.
This game isn't without issues, my beast pc struggles to get a decent framerate and the AI certainly takes its time to get things done. Due to the delay it becomes a chore to micromanage your workers. Definately a fun game to pass some time.

Ill begin good to worst here.
The good: the idea of this game is good. Battle mechanics their fairly good.
Building is fun but can be hard. Fun gamemodes.
The bad: the game is buggy. Ai is bad. It was worse but it is still bad. Archers cant aim at cluggy terrain. Corrupttons throw rocks outside my view. 7/10 would throw minicorruptron on archer to make him fly again.

To start, I was one of the original backers of this game on the kickstarter years ago, probably one of the first few hundred, and put a good amount of money into it. Not just saying that to be a hipster about it, but I’ve had many ups and downs with this game, some updates were disappointing, no progress in updating, taking forever to implement feature that made this game worth what I paid for, and at one point I completely forgot it existed for many months.

But after years of waiting, the game is at a point where I can honestly say it’s worth every penny you pay for. It’s still early access, but the devs started to deliver what they promised with the kickstarter. This game has loads of potential, and a lot to offer. Frequent dev updates are keeping people up to date, and I thoroughly enjoy the game!

The developer saw my first review which was negative and helped my with my issues, he added me on steam and helped me.The game will be finished, there is a reason why it is an early access game. The developers are working hard and everybody needs to understand that.

I bought this game in February of 2014, and it has come a long, long way since that time. I remember buying a copy, and buying another copy for a friend of mine, and we both were very impressed with the functionality and gameplay straight off the bat. Early on, it was a little rough around the edges, but seeing as the devs are keeping it updated and adding more and more as time goes on, I have no doubt it will keep getting better and better. The multiplayer is pretty cool, fairly functional with a few small bugs, but I'm going to chalk those up to be the fact that my friend was hosting the server in Michigan and I was connecting from Arizona. The bugs I mentioned were buildings popping in and out of existance, Bricktrons popping in and out of existance (both of these item popping into and out of existance bugs reset after a server restart. Nothing ingame was lost.), and crashes occationally when my friend would stop the server.

As of right now, 05,16,2016, the multiplayer gameplay is a little bland. There's not much to do other than try to make cool castles and watch as bricktrons dig their way into the ground, then eventually seal themselves in their own mines. There is no PVP combat yet with the warriors, but you can still lop arrows at your friend's worker bricktrons when he sends them over to your base to say hello. BUT, the devs Shatojon and Evax livestreamed a new work in progress update teaser with co-op corruptron combat and base building 3 days ago on 05,13,2016. I can't wait until they release it. I will update this review with my thoughts after I have explored the update, but my first impressions from seeing the livestream are very positive. A co-op bricktron combat alongside co-op base building is exactly what I wanted from this game.

Overall, I am very pleased with my $20 investment. Some people tend to say that every hour of playtime should considered to be about a dollar, and if you come up short on hours spent playing, then it's a bad investment. I personally don't think that's a very good idea of how you should look at the picture. I see it as this: if the game is fun, then it's a good investment, if the game is bad, it's a bad investment. You'll never know if it's good or bad until you invest. Don't take my opinion as the gospel, nor should you take anyone else's opinion as the gospel, since we all have different opinions. If the game looks fun to you, invest, if you don't want to, don't. Just don't whine and moan when the game isn't perfect even though it says right above the "Add to cart" button that the game isn't perfect and that it is still in early access. Don't ♥♥♥♥ on the developers who are making this game for a living for not completing the game quick enough. They're taking their time to make the game as perfect as they want it to be, updating it and keeping in contact with the customers. Hell, the developer Shatojon even added me and sent me a message asking my opinion on the game. Has any AAA game developer gone out of their way to actually talk one on one with a customer before? Did Ubisoft go out of their way to ask their consumers' opinions on Assassin's Creed Unity after it was released broken? Nope. The only thing Ubisoft's CEO has said was that ALL Steam users and all PC users are pirates, and that he doesn't give a ♥♥♥♥ if the game is broken for us. Would you, the consumer, really rather have a broken game on release and a CEO of the company you're buying the content from telling you to get bent because he's an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, than a game functional in early access and a group of devs who really bust their asses with a game they want people to enjoy? Seriously?

TL:DR
Dev saw I was not happy, then he helped me step by step and now I'm enjoying the game a lot more.
It means a lot to me when the Devs interact with the players and take the time to help out.

I couldnt for the life of me figure out how to create a stockpile, needed to refine and store resources for building, so I pretty much couldnt do anything and the Tutorial was not helpful with this task. Basically all the power in this game comes from holding down the RIGHT mouse button and depending on what or where you are holding the cursor, the options will change. SOMEHOW i missed this but all is well now.

I tried playing this game a few times over the years and struggled with the tutorial and wasnt able to figure out basic game mechanics. Tried it again today hoping to see that it had changed because I was always keen to see where this game would go, but alas. I was stuck in the same rut as previously. I went and wrote a review explaining the faults I saw and decided I'd be back in a few more months to see what has changed.
Well, one of the Devs went saw the review, added me and offered to help, he politely explained step by step what I had missed and now finally I am able to play!

The tools (once you've figured them out) are simple and the options limitless as to what you can build.
Really stoked to have been helped by the Devs and its made all the difference with my attitude towards the game, go sell some of your unused AWP skins and pick this game up, these fat little yellow men are way cuter than your 'worm god stat track' AWP anyway.

Even though I recommend this game, it's really recommended to a more specific group than just to everyone.

Pros:
- Developers are quite interactive with the community on their youtube page "sauropodstudio" where you can ask questions as they stream the game every Friday at 3pm US Central time.
- Bugs are few in number and if reported correctly are taken care of quickly.
- Controls are easy to use for RTS veterans and easy to learn for everyone else.
- Pathfinding, for your troops, is well developed for a building RTS.
- *Personal Taste* The graphical fedelity is pleasing to the eye.
- *Personal Taste* The gameplay is simple so not to have unneeded extras.

Cons:
- The game requires a reasonably powerful computer setup to play on anything but simple graphics.
- The game is run on Unity engine which makes the game choppy when you get into later levels with larger waves of enemies.
- *Personal Taste* Some of the more interesting additions have yet to be added to the game.
- The AI pathing for the enemies can be exploited to make the game trivial.
- *Personal Taste* For the current amount of content, the price is a little too high.
- It has no real tutorial so you'll have to watch videos, or look at the wiki for help.
- Development is slow due to their small team.

Recommendation is to RTS fans, who cross over with Building fans, such as minecraft, with those who enjoy an easier simpler form of Dwarf Fortress. Buy only if you really believe that the developers vision of the outcome of the game matches your own and you you don't mind waiting for it to be worked out by there relatively small team.

Avoid this game, do not be tempted to even want to try it. I have stopped playing for over a year, and saw the new "positive" reviews and decided to give it a go again.

Devs have not made any improvements at all with regards to the AI which pretty much breaks the game as you can't do anything as your workers won't do what they need to do due to bad programming.

They have already made lots of money from earlier sales, so please avoid until they actually fix the issues and start making improvements and adding real features that matters. If you want to throw your money away, do so at other devs that actually intend to complete and fufill what is promised in a timely manner.

Edit:

I have been approached by a member of the Castle Story team, and this is a welcome change as it shows things may be heading the right direction now. Of course, as what I have told that team member, unfortunately, what ever is being said to me are just 'promises' and is no different from what things were many years ago. Real improvements and updates needs to be released in timely manners for me to recommend this game.

So thank you for reaching out, it is a very welcome improvement, but the good PR needs to be followed up with actual action.

It's been a long time since I knew this game had potential, but Sauropod encountered problem in the first steps of the development. After 200h ingame, I stoped. I came back yesterday, and I have to say: this potential clearly became reality with the last patchs.

There are 4 main modes (for the moment):
-Peace mode: build your own castle (tunnel and bridge) and expand it to a whole map in peace mode. Perfect to practice!!
-Survival mode: try to survive as long as possible to the enemies waves. You'll have to smartly build your castle and defend it with your archers, knights, catapults and traps. (dificulties: easy, normal, hard)
-Conquest mode: build multiple structure and try to expand your kingdom to capture enemie's base without being attacked in your main castle. (dificulties: easy, normal, hard)
-Coop peace mode: build with your friends!

There is also a map editor and a lot of new content upcoming.

Don't care about these old review pointing the bad optimisation, or saying this game is dead. They are wrong, castle story is alive, improving and WAITING FOR YOU SOLDIER! If you like strategic/construction/war game , this one is definitely for you!!!

I've abandoned this game for 3 years until recently, and i decided to try it out again, see what's changed. Not THAT much has changed, but there are noticeable differences. I abandoned this due to the AI at the time, but now the AI is actually competent and the game is playable now. The game might be slow paced as they have to mine rocks in order to build bricks, but it is quite fun building. There is quite a variety of blocks to choose from, from normal 2x1 to rounded ones and archways. Stairs too. 3 years ago the edit mode (mode to place blocks) was extremely difficult to use and it just wasnt fun to build. But now they've refined it and it is quick and easy to select and place blocks. No snapping in the wrong places anymore. There also are other modes where you get attacked by rock monsters and you have to defend yourself by placing down archers and catapults, which is fun. I mostly like sandbox though. There also is multiplayer, but i havent tried it yet. But from what i've heard, multiplayer is stable. So the end verdict? This game might not be perfect, but it sure is shaping up.

7.8-10

This game is alot of fun and has a unique consept that sets it apart from many other games. The use of builders helps automate some of the more tedious aspects of Minecraft. I can't wait to play on the big island with my buddies once it is completed.

I strongly recommend this game if you like building games.

In this game you begin with a few workers and start extracting ressources to build the castle of your dream, or anything that you dream of, hire more workers or soldiers. You place the blueprints and they will build it. There is a variety of ressources, stones and wood blocks and structures such as columns, door, catapult, lights and more.

There is also a fighting part to the game, if you play invasion or conquest mode, you have to defend against hordes of evil creatures called corruptrons.

I have this game since a 2 or 3 years and development of the game was continuous, features are added regularly, and the devs are close to the community, they listen and reply to feedbacks and suggestions.

The is a multiplayer mode, which is basic at the moment but will get optimised soon according to dev team.

The game is quite lovely tbh . I mean I like the idea of building your fortress while being raided by .. creatures but the game needs A LOT of new content and polishing.. After all it's just in early access .

The price is a bit higher for a game in its current state but the ones who want to enjoy this cool idea will play it gladly .

This game is great. 9/10

Alright a real review now.

Pros:
Good graphics
I don't know about you but I like the combat.
Good music

cons:
Building a castle isn't as easy as it looks. Well at least for me.
And well, I can't really think of anything else accept some bugs I think are still in the game.

PS. They fixed some big issues that made this game unplayable, and this game is NOT ABANDONED! I don't know why people keep saying that. The devs are still active and working on a release.
