Update 1.7: Devil's Due

Open World

  • Devil’s Tusk which will include a content refresh to match the content model implemented in Coral Forest and Sertao.
  • The level cap has increased to 45.
  • Devil’s Tusk World Event
  • Tensions have escalated in Devil’s Tusk. The Accord has deployed scientists and soldiers around the zone looking for information from this area which housed a pre-Melding weapons research facility. The Chosen and Ophanim are harassing Accord personnel and it’s the ARES Initiative’s job to defend the scientists. This world event works in three phases
  • During the first phase, pilots will find Accord personnel either captured by Chosen or Ophanim (depending whose territory they are found within), or at outposts that need to be defended. These events are scattered throughout the zone. Once a certain amount of events are complete, the second phase will begin.
  • While in the second phase, the Accord will send dropships into the zone in several different specific locations to evacuate the scientists. ARES pilots should defend these sites and evacuate as many scientists as they possibly can before the third phase begins.
  • The U.A.S. Vanguard moves in closer to the Chosen Prison and the Chosen launch an all-out attack on the Accord. There are three sites along the coast of Devil’s Tusk that house Anti-Aircraft guns which ARES Pilots will need to use to take down the Chosen ships attacking the Vanguard. At the same time, a small team of ARES Pilots will need to use dropship transports to infiltrate the Chosen Prison and evacuate the Accord personnel held prisoner there before the Chosen take out the Vanguard.
  • Note that for 1.7 we have made a change to damage resistances and there will no longer be enemies with damage type resistances. Enemies will still have vulnerabilities to certain damage types. The purpose of this change is to ensure the effect of damage types in combat is a net positive. Players should still be able to maximize their combat effectiveness by selecting the proper weapon damage type against specific enemies, at the same time players are not penalized to use weapons they enjoy.
  • New instanced mission: Homecoming, including Challenge and Hardcore versions.
  • Serkan has driven us out of Blackwater during the Razor’s Edge mission and is continuing his plans to assault the Accord and steal their arcporting technology. Mason, Kara, Fuller, and 35 pursue Serkan in an opportunity to take down the Razorwind leader.
  • A familiar threat, Baneclaw, has returned and has been tuned for platoons of 10 players. Baneclaw is meant to be a level 45 instanced boss fight.
  • Damocles – Assault Prototype Sticky Launcher
  • Fires a projectile which sticks to surfaces and soft targets. After a short duration, the projectile explodes, dealing Melding damage in an area of effect.
  • Plague Doctor – Biotech Prototype Needler
  • Fires projectiles which poison targets on hit, dealing Melding damage over time. If the target dies while poisoned, they will drop a health pack.
  • Omega Perseid – Dreadnaught Prototype AutoBlaster
  • Fires multiple projectiles in a wide spread. This weapon deals high damage at close range.
  • Shadowlance – Recon Prototype Lancer
  • Fires a bolt which penetrates targets and bounces off surfaces.
  • Distant Memory – Engineer Prototype Remote Mine Layer
  • Fires projectiles that stick to surfaces. The alternate fire detonates the mines, dealing Melding damage in an area of effect, or repairing friendly deployables.
  • Abyssal Reach Grenade - Auxiliary Weapon
  • Throw a grenade that triggers on impact, releasing a mist of Melding energy that drags enemies towards itself. After a short duration, the grenade explodes, dealing Melding damage and knocking enemies back.
  • Hardcore campaign level and loot raised to 45
  • Hardcore Operations level and loot raised to 45
  • Jericho level raised to 45
  • Jericho now rewards Module Credits per round, with increases in Module Credit gains every five rounds.
  • We are continuing to monitor Jericho rewards and may make additional updates to Jericho loot in the future.
  • Defense of Dredge level and loot raised to 45
  • S.O.S.’s lockdown objective now requires that players defend the terminal.
  • Team Deathmatch is now available in a newly created map for the mode, Refinery. Two teams of five are pit against each other. The first team to the score limit or the team with the most kills after time expires is declared the winner.
  • Greatly increased the amount of experience earned for both participating in and winning a PvP match.
  • Participation in as well as winning in a PvP match awards one key fragment.
  • Winning a PvP match awards three rare items (with a small chance to upgrade to epic).
  • Winning a PvP match awards two rare Armor, Weapon, Ability, or Module caches.
  • Participating in a PvP match awards two rare items (with a small chance to upgrade to epic).

Elite Rank Stat Changes:

 Common Ability and Weapon Rating

New scaler for Rare Weapon and Ability Damage

  • Flat bonus over all levels
  • Fewer levels to reach max
  • Higher bonus overall
  • Affects:
    • Ability Damage
    • Weapon Damage
  • When walking through Copa or other heavy areas in 1.6, especially on higher settings, frame rates are very inconsistent, especially when you turn around quickly. This should now be improved.
  • Minor hitches when walking around should be fixed.
  • The 5-second-hitches should be completely gone. We've addressed some threading issue that could cause starvation of threads.
  • In 1.6, the appearance of UI like tutorial tips or the inventory can cause major hitches up to a few seconds. This should be fixed in 1.7. Textures are loaded in the background.
  • Textures should stream in much more quickly now. The system has been completely redone. You shouldn't notice tiles streaming anymore if you have a decent internet connection, even if you are using a HDD, not an SSD.
  • The view distance of NPCs in towns should be much higher
  • NPCs shouldn't stream in late anymore; you shouldn't be shot by invisible mobs.
  • Better recovery from device reset (changing window size, going fullscreen). Before, textures went black for a while before the game can reload them. Now it should look less broken.
  • Character levels of detail (LODs) are more stable now. Before, you could get into situations where LODs would switch even if you stand still.
  • Improved static geometry storage and streaming. This reduces install size by about 1.6 GB, memory usage by about 70 MB and improves load time. With this and other fixes, problems with out of memory crashes should be improved, albeit possibly not completely fixed.
  • Bought back the radar options from 1.3 (terrain gamma, rotation, zoom etc.) except square radar which would have been hard to get back. In addition, there’s a Combat Zoom option now that zooms the radar in when you are engaged in combat. If you are driving a vehicle at a reasonable speed, the radar will not zoom in, so it won’t affect your navigation.
  • Chat may be viewed from replays and spectator mode
  • Players that have 10 or more Elite Points to spend will skip interface animations.
  • Elite Points can now be spent if a player is not at maximum level and has Elite Points to spend.

Patch Notes for 1.6.1946

Patch 1.6.1946

  • Five new cosmetics are now available in the Red Bean store for PvP Battle Tokens. PvP Battle Tokens are earned by playing Jetball.
Open World
  • Reduced the maximum number of wandering encounters in Sertao, but increased their spawn rate.
  • Reduced the amount of ambient NPCs that are spawned in Sertao
  • Note: Both of these actions were taken to reduce NPC counts in the world at a time which should reduce the issues with critical NPCs not spawning (ex. NPCs related to ARES Job objectives).
Bug Fixes
Battleframes and Combat
  • Creeping Death now has a fixed range. There was a bug where the radius was not actually increasing and only damaging enemies within 1 meter of its point of origin. The decision was made to give it a fixed range so it may deal its damage at its full area of effect immediately.
  • Fixed a bug where the Bastion's Mine Launcher was not repairing Deployable Shield.
  • Fixed a bug where the Arcing Bolts perk was doing too little damage.
  • Sure Shot should now appropriately increase rate of fire (it was previously decreasing rate of fire).
  • Invigorate should now appropriately increase rate of fire (it was previously decreasing rate of fire).
Open World
  • Fixed a crash with the Flight Recorder ARES Job at FOB Sagan.
  • Fixed a crash with the Treasure Hunt portion of the Orbital Comm. Tower encounter.
  • Fixed an encounter crash with the escort step of the Modern Medicine ARES Job in Tecumseh.
  • Fixed an encounter crash with Skydock.
  • Fixed a spawn issue with the ARES Job boss in the Black Hills Fortress (Northern Shores).
  • Fixed a bug where Yuki Lin would not respawn after being killed. Yuki Lin is now immortal.
  • Players should now be able to fully complete the SINless ARES Job required for the story line (fixed server-side Feb. 19th)
  • Fixed a bug where the Easy Rider bounty would not properly track if the player received the bounty while already on a vehicle.
  • Fixed a bug where Bounties would continue to track progress but not complete.
Instances and PvP
  • Fixed crashes with the Jetball encounter.
  • Kill stats should now be tracked in Jetball (rank points were awarded but the stat was not updated).
  • Fixed an encounter crash within Icebreaker.
Operation High Tide
  • Fixed an issue where skivers and Reapers continued to spawn after their respective 8th waves.
  • Fixed some issues with the rally point on the final island in Operation High Tide
  • Increased the duration of the water delay in the High Tide alternate path. This path should now be feasible for groups of two players.
Defense of Dredge
  • Fixed a crash with the vents encounter in Defense of Dredge.
Cosmetics and Consumables
  • Security Keys should now be able to be purchased in 30x quantities.
  • Fixed a display issue with the Hotshot Bodysuit Pattern in the Paint Shop.
  • The Accord Headset ear gear is free in the New You once again. This may fix the "Insufficient Funds" error some people were experiencing.

Poor choices in development and management led an incredible game to its degeneration. Big changes that regularly came after a few months the equivalent of gear-resetting (and gear is all that matters in this game), irking veterans of old and rookies getting used to the system. Despair-fuelled moves during last winter has cut any possibility of recovery from the festering problems that have encrusted this shriveled company.

It's dead, Jim.

Firefall WAS an amazing game. NOW BEFORE I lose your attention, we'll look upon EMBER! Ember is a new game that will be made if enough support for it is shown. The game will be founded upon the same foundations that Firefall had in the Beta over 2 years ago. It's time to let Firefall go and say hello to it's spiritual successor Ember. (share with who you can, as a Firefall fan I can only hope that this game gets made)

I loved Firefall, I really do. But that was in the past, now, this game is a disaster. If you're returning players, please shy away from coming back immediately unless you want to ruin those good ol' memories of Firefall.

Poorly optimized!
It needs an GeForce 8600 or AMD equivalent and a Dual Core AMD CPU or Intel equivalent to run (according to the developers).
I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM and a GeForce 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 and I can't even run it on low at 1280x960!!!

The drama behind the scenes is affecting the game and the community. Game is ruined. 80% of the content has been removed from the game. When You hit max level....then...thats it. They also removed half the classes and perks so everyone more or less ends up the same. Crafting is gone, resource farming is gone there is absolutely nothing to do if that was your thing. The greed of the company trying to adapt a game for all platforms completely ruins gameplay. Instead of having one great platform game they end with less than mediocre multiplatform. If this game wasn't free to play, it would be long gone.

Before 1.6 this was the greatest game. It was the only one I played ever since I joined. Once 1.6 came out I was really excited. But then my heart sank as I found the game to be riddled with bugs, content gone as everything went so downhill. I read a post about 'the future of firefall'. I thought they were gonna fix this problem, but no, they announce that they're gonna release it on other platforms. In the state of Firefall at the moment, I doubt this would amount to anything at all. I really hope the devs listen to us and make this game great again.

What can I say that would ease the pain? That it was great while it lasted? Those are the words that should be said for an awesome game that's closing its doors for the final time; celebrations of the life of a community and good game that ran for well over a decade. I had a few of these experiences. Phantasy Star Online for example was one of these, (the first one mind you. There's still Private Servers, but no point since PSO2 exists). I played a few other little MMOs here and there in my youth. In 2012, I found this awesome game called FireFall, and fell completely in love with it. It had the makings for an awesome story, awesome gameplay/gunplay, it was an MMO and an FPS combined... and something like this was new to me. Hell, it was one of the firsts... by which I mean if I point my gun at something and pull the trigger, it dies. No tab-targeting to be seen.

I was a founding Commander too even. Watched the game grow during the early days of beta. You could go anywhere in the world, you could shoot whatever moved... there was actual things to do. Pretty sandbox-y for those early days. I remember spending a couple good years with this one group... well, several groups actually, although with this one community army, I could never really get into it offically... so I just operated as an outside agent. It was the game that got me to buy my first graphics card since I wasn't really big on the PC market back then... so I can thank Firefall for that. The other group, we had a teamspeak and good times. Sure it was a little rough... but I'm generally pretty chill. Good times were had, before that got broke up; this of course being after everyone else had quit... the game became stagnant due to a MAJOR flaw; the developers at Red5 Studios were rebuilding the game from the ground-up, so that left us with little-to-no updates outside of hotfixes. They'd started this whole entire promotional bit with a bus (which is sitting in a warehouse somewhere now), prizes to be given out for their Founder Packs (which were available for a good year or so), and no actual NEW content. No new guns or gun designs, no new Battleframes; nothing.

Then comes a new update that kills PvP off (which was fine for me since I didn't play it anyway), which was pretty lackluster to begin with... adds some new zones to teleport to which didn't let you go very far. They rebuilt crafting, and progression to a near-unplayable level. For example.... you could have this really nice Tier 3 Plasma Cannon (Assault), but then you can't get anything else.. abilities, armor, servos... nothing. Or you could kit out your plating and become a little bit better than paper mache (READ: tinfoil), but then you couldn't kit out anything else because of constraints. Math went in and between a few people collabing together, they figured out it'd take 13.5 years to max out.... one Battleframe. ONE. Not all 15... just one.

Well, come later on and after enough hell-raising, instead of fixing the stupidly-high progression requirement ceiling (they reduced it a little bit but not by much), they spend more time with their Twitch streams and social garbage such as Red 5 TV... and rebuild the game yet a second time. More waiting... more time spent... and still as friends left, I stuck with it. I stuck by them... and little did we know that Red 5 was pretty turbulent internally; all the senior staff had been fired off at this point, The9 which was the people funding Red 5 at this point had a complete strangle-hold on them at this point, and returns were being requested. They booted out Mark Kern... one of the main CEOs of Red 5 (READ: the guy who FOUNDED Red 5 in the FIRST place!!), and hired another guy to lead development for a little while.

Progress got quicker, and then Open Beta hits... after 2½ years it finally hits and people are estatic. They added a new Battleframe which was pretty cool... until I figured out how bad it was. It was called "Arsenal" which was this hulking Frankenstein-esque junk frame thrown together from various other frame abilities and parts, made fat as an insult, and carried a pretty poor LMG with did crap-all to anything you shot at.. and its abilities were poor imitations of other weapons which didn't even last but a few seconds, a butchered Engineer "Salvo Proxy" called some sort of new lame ability and made its ultimate. That's right... ultimates replaced the fourth ability... which had turned this game's skill system into that of a damn MOBA's abilities (three boring abilities, one half-decent ability)... which seemed great at first for the other abilities, until they changed those too! They kept throwing nerfs about, making the enemies stupid-hard, and making us stupid-weak. No skill anymore, just the feeling of being curb-stomped into the ground over and over.

Another half-year in Open Beta, and finally comes the 1.0 release... but not before yet ANOTHER rebuild of the game. Now we're reduced to levels (in which the only frame I ever was able to play; Accord Assault) insta-leveled to the cap of 40 due to all the XP it had obtained, and a semi-linear storyline. There's still open-world stuff to do, and everything. And surprisingly... my best friend decided to come back! And a new generation of people joined us in the new community I was a part of (READ: Still am, still proud. PG forever, I tell you what), and together... we completely dominated the game. The fun was back, with stuff to do and new places to visit... although those older places (Area Y; Jungle, Area Z; Antarctica) were still on hold..........

Unfortunately... good times have to end I suppose. Eventually, things got pretty bleak after more members of Red 5 got let go. The9 was increasing its grip on the company from what the community could see; what with Reddit being that thing that seems to bring out the best and worst in people (though I don't use it myself; I can read, however), Various AMAs from disgruntled employees who were struggling at this point to survive (For example, Tony Reyas whom I had spoken to personally a few times while he still worked there... good guy that one.), and talks of yet ANOTHER rebuild of the game (We had gone through three-four at this point? I lost count years ago)....

And so now we arrive at what I could only describe as the Chrono Trigger-variant of post-Apocalypse 2300 as far as this company goes, (if you want, you can listen to that piece of the soundtrack... it's called "2300 A.D."). The last Firefall Live was quite some time ago, last year in 2015 if I recall... they don't even use their studio for it anymore (which looked pretty "repo'd" to me). Most of the CEOs are gone now. There might be someone there but I have only loosely followed the game and the resources of the company at this point... as I've moved on. I was a mentor for the longest; still am... had life issues to take care of course, but there... there's just no point anymore in worrying about it. At this point, the forums are dead and broken (see the following screenshot), the community is completely divided and broken, the devs don't bother speaking to us anymore except for FadedPez (AKA: Frank Lettieri... I salute you, you poor soul) who is already attempting to hold everything together with what appears to be some lint, some cloth string, and scotch tape.

Never before in my 15 years of playing online games have I seen a game so utterly ruined by its developers. Short of shutting down the servers there isnt much more that can be done to make this game any less playable.

Firefall used to be a very nice game that really only lacked in having a larger community, I would have rated it 4.5/5. After patch 1.6 where pretty much every system in the game was ruined/removed and everyone's characters lost everything (not to mention the removal of over a third of the classes) I would rate it a 1/5. New people can no longer switch between classes and they removed the crafting system entirely. What makes all of this worse is the fact that the only motive red5 seems to have for doing this is the huge leap towards monetization of pretty much the entire game (you need money to get good gear, a crafting system would circumvent that).

TLDR: Was good, now entirely crap. Not worth the disk space.

tl;dr- If you haven't played this game before, do so right now-- while there's still a game left to play. But if you're a veteran like I am, playing this game again will just get you thinking about the "Good ol' days". At least it did for me.

I really wanted to be able to give this game a positive review. I wanted it more than anything else in the world. It has so many good memories for me, and when I first played in the summer of 2013 near the end of the closed beta, I remember thinking that it the most fresh and innovative MMO that I had seen in a long time. (Granted, I'm sort of an antisocial person, so I tend to hate MMOs because I don't play too well with others.) But since I picked it back up a few weeks ago, I can only say that things have gotten worse since I last played, which was about a month after the Sertao patch first went live.

Even then, I thought FireFall was going down a negative slope-- but back then I thought it was either just a fluke that would be fixed in the next few patches, or because I had simply burned myself out by playing it too much. But now it's become clear that Red5 has fallen so far that they can't recover. Especially after the buyout by the Chinese company "The Nine", (Which sounds like the name of a terrorist faction in a cyberpunk movie, by the way.) and when you take the time to consider that the members of Red5 that recieved the money basically immediately blew it all on hats. It kinda shows how little respect and care they had left for their own game near the end.

As for the quality of gameplay, like I said before, it's been on a negative slope for a while, but I only just noticed how steep the slope was. The open world experience overall used to be much better. There wasn't a set level barrier between areas or even strict "levels" at all. The whole world was open to anyone at any power level, and you could proceed and explore at your own pace. If you ♥♥♥♥ed up and went somewhere too strong for you, that was your own mistake. Now the zones (Coral Forest, Sertao and Diamond Head) have fallen back into the classic MMO mistake of being segmented and cordoned off into areas with seperate level requirements. It really cockblocks the fun factor of exploring this game and forces you back into grinding in one spot until you're strong enough to move on rather than growing through exploration. Back in MY day, anyone could go to Sunken Harbor any time they wanted, but now it's a level 30+ zone.

The quality of the quests has seen a sharp decrease as well. Except it's not even consitent. The old ARES missions that have been here since the summer of 2013, and even the first 25% of the main questline are still pretty fun and well designed. The remaining 75% of the main quest and the new open world missions, however... Well, it's obvious where Red 5 dropped off and The Nine picked up. Even based off of voice acting quality alone and ignoring the rest of the missions. The bad voice acting was funny for about 15 minutes but then it made me die a little bit inside after I realized why. That being said, the new "missions" are also horribly broken and glitchy. Overpowered bosses, convoluted objectives that could just be replaced with something so simple as a door key, et cetera. I was having troubles defeating a level 20 boss in my level 45 armor because of how broken he was. I've also heard complaints from guildmates (who are also veterans in maxed out armors) about the exact same mission near the end of the questline (which I have failed to make it to because of a game breaking bug earlier in the campaign). The9, convolutedness isn't a substitute for balanced difficulty at higher levels.

Like I said, I wish that I could have given this a good review. I really wanted to. Despite its greatly increasing flaws, this game is still very unique, especially in the F2P MMO scene. With its true 3D movement mechanic and diversity between classes, FireFall's potential was immense. But now when I look it all I see is what could have been and what soon won't be. One of my favorite games is circling the drain, and it's breaking my heart.

It was fun before they ruined it. Incredibly indecisive devs that don't seem to have much of a clue about what makes a game good.

Really cannot say that I support this game anymore. It started off as a brilliant unique idea and has over the years gone through countless complete rebuilds until now it is barely the same idea. Most of the core of the game has been gutted to the point now as someone that has been playing this game since I bought into it in alpha... I am not even certain what the point of the game is anymore.

It has basicly been dumbed down to zero for heavens know what purpose and to this day seems to go through some major new development direction monthly. Could it be a great game some day, at this point I honesly have to say no, that ship has sailed. Best just to avoid it and hope the devs learned their lesson if and when they perhaps decide to start a new project.
