Ah Firefall, one of the few MMO's out there who have shown promise and does it's best to live up to it while other games cough cough!* Destiny cough cough!
have failed to deliver and as a result developers (and publishers included) over hype it's content.
Now you may ask: "why Firefall? surely there are better MMOs out there!" no, there really aren't. I have played Rift, SWTOR, WoW, Warframe, Runescape the list goes on and none of those MMOs have impressed me in the least. SWTOR is basically WoW with a Star wars coat of paint plagued by EA's greed and Bioware's massive ego. Rift, was 'okay' but it's still WoW with a new skin and nothing more. Warframe was 90% of the time a Dungeon raid grinding simulator plagued by microtransactions and slow progression all set to make more money, and while I am aware the devs must make money to continue development of said game sometimes it can get out of hand.
And finally WoW, their business model is a dying animal from 1999 dragged into this modern world hoping for customers. And while WoW is addictive it's community is toxic and pretty much full of virgin 18 year old males with no lives chasing Blood elf women all over the place to stare at their breasts.
Now what exactly makes Firefall different from all the rest? Firefall is a F2P FPS/TPS/MMO with of course, jetpacks. It's setting is in the future so it's a sci-fi MMO and that all together is all the reason I need to play it. Why you might ask? because every other MMO out there is trying to be the same thing which is pretty much Dungeons and Dragons. This is a fresh breath of air within the MMO side of gaming that should be explored further, but everyone seems to be quite stupid so let them rot with their WoW clones.
But this isn't enough information for you to play the game and try it out for yourself. I am explaining this from my opinion, what I should really be doing is giving you the good sides and the bad sides of this game instead of hitting on other games for their lack of creativity.
While Firefall's combat may not hang on button mashing a spell in multiple slots, the combat is no where near perfect. The combat is a little glitchy and tends to be awkward when fighting NPC's due to NPC's "skiing" around with poor animation quality. Which is yet another problem with the combat, the animations need desperate work because it makes indie zombie survival game combat look as fluid as clear water (although it isn't really that bad, but close enough.) First person perspective's animations are just as bad because the view model seems to break quite often either by random chance or exiting large frame drops, so for the most part you'll be playing in Third person. Now don't get me wrong the combat is fun enough to continue playing, but it needs help if it wishes to keep shooter fans such as myself invested.
And now for the meat of the game, grinding! because that's fun right!? doing missions over and over and over and over until you get to the next level so you can go to the higher level area and do missions there over and over and over and over again it's so much fun I muted the game! Why?! why do dev's think MMO's primary goal is to drive yourself insane? I don't want to do the same things I did with the last class until I get my next class to 40! Can you guess what you get in return for grinding all the way up to 40? *plays drumb roll*
if you guessed more grinding then you. are. the WINNNNNNAAAAAH!!! you get to go play Warzones in Devil's Tusk with other overly powerful level 40 players and get boat loads of XP you can't use! But wait! there's more! if you didn't think tedious resource gathering was enough for you, now you can go do tedious resource gathering as enemy players eat your limbs off in seconds while watching them ♥♥♥♥ your family in front of you crying tears of blood! FUN RIGHT?!
Here's a better idea: make the end game worth it! you tortured people all that way just to give them the same thing they were doing at the lower levels but this time far, far, worse! Let's say for example: at the end game you can now get four player special ops missions that require certain skill types such as stealth, distraction, stealing, etc and in return you can get cosmetics or higher chances of getting purple items- something atleast worth leveling to 40. Because I couldn't give a damn about how powerful my character is when all you have to do is stay in the air and fire down death until you complete X Y and Z objectives. Plus mobs can't complain on a forum about how over powered you are so I really can't care about my strength unless fighting in PVP which pretty much boils down to who has the most purple gear anyway...
Ooooooooh boy, I am not going to have fun explaining this. I'll get straight to the point and say; it's a poorly written saturday morning cartoon show! the writing is so tasteless it makes me want to dry heave! Everything
is predictable! for example: "jee, I hope giant crabs from space don't rain on us" *giant crabs from space rain on you* "oh no this was so unpredictable your armor's power is draining and now you can't fly because reasons...Oh dear, let me bring them back up as slowly as I can." Whatever you do when you play this game, avoid job boards unless you are an achievement hunter.
The good news is the story can be ignored, the bad news is no one cared enough to make a compelling cast of characters.
So what are the good things I can say about this game? well it's free, you can unlock everything within the game for free if you are willing to work for it, and it has a great community as well as developers. But the glitches and the lack of content is what holds me back from speaking positively about this game. And it's not like I didn't try to like this game! I really wanted to enjoy Firefall, and I still do, but it's a love/hate relationship. I have 322 hours on record as proof that I enjoyed the game enough to soldier through it's flaws and eventually write a review on it. And in return I give Firefall a 6/10, it's above 5 because it is trying to be a good MMO that doesn't constantly try to harpoon your wallet every chance it gets like most MMO's I have played. Now do I suggest you install FF right now? well, the in game music is broken, the UI is always glitching and this cannot be fixed via hotfix. Despite that go ahead and install it if you have the space for it otherwise move along.
