If you've ever played an MMO and wished that it was a little more like Borderlands, or if you've ever played Borderlands and wished that it was more than superficially similar to an MMO, you should give Firefall a shot.
I have been playing Firefall since early beta, and it is constantly imrpoving at a steady pace. I have always enjoyed basically any blend of First-Person Shooter and Role Playing game, so I approach this with a heavy bias.
The main story is actually pretty engaging in a big space opera, future of the entire species kind of way. The side-quests are... on the whole, less like that, but some of them still manage to deliver in terms of ineresting and attention grabbing story. Some (but not all) of the voice acting is so bad that it's funny. Similarly to the queastionable writing, this mostly affects side-missions, but since these can be a very quick way to level, it's not like this stuff is stashed out of the way where the player might never hear it. In spite of being a hammed up cliche(at times), the story is consistent within the game world, and at no point do I find myself wondering why I'm doing anything.
The open world PVP is excellent, but sadly the OWPVP zone tends to be a bit of a ghost town. Every time I've been there I've spent long amounts of time wondering where everyone was only to be quickly ganked and ambushed by the first person I see, who then disappears as suddenly as they appeared. I see potential here, but I can't really tell you what kind of potential since all of my experiences in PVP land have been strange and surreal.
The F2P is not P2W. You advance at a decent rate even if you insist on spending no money on the game. IRL currency can be used to buy basically anything that good old fashioned mining and grinding will get you, but it can also be used to purchase things that make the overall game experience much more convenient (vehicles and gliders, XP and money boosts) or lively (customizations and cosmetics) without giving paying players any sort of advantage over other players (no weapons or kit that only paying players get).
If FPS isn't your thing you can play it in third person.
It's space opera.
The jump jets are just like the ones in Tribes (old Tribes, not the new garbage the kids are playing now, though they're probably just liek the ones in there too, if the new tribes even has jumpjets... can you really do tribes without jumpjets? God I hope they didn't try to do that).
Dude yeah, it's actually just like Tribes and Borderlands had a little F2P MMO baby that bears a strange resemblance to Destiny, but doesn't have Bungie's weird pretentious stench all over it (and it's actually a little less of a grind... yeah, a F2P game is less grindy than B2P Destiny... not sure which game that says more about).
If you read this far just download it already.
