StarForge Release Version 1.0

Release Trailer:

We are proud to announce that we are releasing StarForge today! After many years of hard work, dreams and determination, we are releasing the 1.0 of StarForge. This would not have been possible without the help of the community, fans, and supporters of our game through its various phases over the years.

Two and a half years ago, Will and Steve were working out of a basement part time on the game, and then the game exploded online, giving us the opportunity of a lifetime to finally make the game we've always wanted to build. A year after that, we managed to increase to a team of 4 developers. And after the launch on Early Access, managed to build a small company which has been working to bring you the StarForge release today. This would not have been possible without the hard work and efforts of a tireless development team, and your continued support.

We understand that at times we bit off a bit more than we could chew, and certain areas took quite some time to build and test. It goes without saying that this has been a vast learning experience for us all. We really appreciate everyone's patience and support during the development stretch. We are glad to have participated as one of the first few games to launch the Early Access section on Steam, and to learn and develop with the community over the past year and a half. We plan to exit Early Access within the next few days. We also plan to no longer sell the Founders Club upon, or shortly after release, depending on how quickly Steam can remove it. We only want the Founders Club to contain exclusive rewards for early supporters.

We believe we have put in some super cool and innovative technology and gameplay, including an Infinite Procedural World, Voxel Digging, Real-Time Atmosphere, Procedural Asteroids, Tunnels, Caves, Mountains, Biomes, Physics Movement, Vehicles, Tons of Guns, Creatures, and Objects, and so much more! All of this works with both single player and multiplayer. It has been a labor of love, we are glad to have progressed this far, and we really enjoy playing the release version. We will continue to monitor the game, and plan to do another update in the future with bug fixes. Further updates will depend on future sales of the game.

Over the past few months, while in Beta, we have fixed the majority of the critical and major bugs, and this release contains hundreds more bug fixes and many new features.

- New Tile Sets: Monolithum, Detrite (Founders Only), Interior hull (Founders Only)

- New Vehicle : Space Copter

- Water/Lava Plane Generation

- Dedicated Server Performance

- Procedural Asteroids

- Atmosphere Shaders and Cloud Improvements

- New Doors : Monolithum, Titanium, Graphene
- New Creature: Sand Sloth

- Desert and Badlands Vegetation

- New Collectable Plants

- Swimming

- 19 Song Original Soundtrack Completed
- Dynamic Loading Screen

- Frame Rate Optimizations

- More realistic Terrain and Biome Generation

- Blocks Have Better Performance

- Badges (Founders Club, IndieGoGo)

- More Dedicated Server Console Commands and Config Options

- Community can now host their own dedicated servers of Creative or Survival. Please visit this link which has the info you need on hosting your own dedicated server:

- 200 + bug fixes

We've also finished and implemented our IndieGoGo and Founders club rewards. IndieGoGo backers must link their account in-game in order to receive their digital perks; Steam purchasers do not need to worry about this as all updates are channeled via Steam.. As for the Digital Rewards (wallpapers, art book, strategy guide, soundtrack), we will be providing a link to the download for these in the next month as we are still putting the finishing touches on them. We will release another blog post about that when they are done.

The hard assets (T-Shirts, Posters) for IndieGoGo backers are also being developed. We have already reached out to everyone involved regarding these rewards. If you are an IndieGoGo backer or Founder on Steam and have questions or concerns about your name being listed, please email us at sworin(at) We will periodically be adding in the new names as we receive them.

Thanks again for all your support. We hope you enjoy playing the release!

"It’s remarkably ambitious, but the terrain manipulation already looks fantastic and outer space is gorgeous. This thing has “potential” scrawled all over it." -PC Gamer

About This Game

StarForge is a sci fi survival sandbox. Hunt to eat, dig for resources, craft many items, build a fort, and fight enemies in order to survive! Do this alone, or with other players, in a fully infinite procedural world.

Key Features in StarForge:

Procedural Infinite Voxel Terrain - There are no set boundaries in StarForge; the planet will procedurally generate each time you start a new game. The terrain supports plains, mountains, deserts, mountains, caves, overhangs, rocks, and much more. The world is infinite, meaning you will be able to run in a single direction for as long as your computer can support it.

Underground/Surface/Space Gameplay - Build a tower that ascends into the clouds, through the atmosphere, then into space, and do this in real-time with no loading screens.

Dynamic World - Enjoy dynamic weather patterns, a 24 day and night cycle, and a real time atmosphere. Creatures drop loot and attack the player and sometimes other creatures. Players can also swim and find water or lava in the game.

Loot and Survive - Before the humans landed countless weapons and armor were sent to Atlas. You will find loot chests littered throughout the land, you will need their contents to survive.

Vehicle Gameplay - Hop on board a 4 wheeled all terrain vehicle with a friend and traverse the world. Or jump into a hovercraft for speedy terrain movement. You may also take flight in the space helicopter.

Procedural 3D Tileset - Build anything you want with our unique 3D Tilesets. You can create towns, villages, bridges, forts, and much more. It is also fully destructible! Ramps and stairs are also included.

Physics Sandbox - We are designing the world to be fully dynamic. This currently includes chopping down trees, turrets, and enemies.

Physics Movement - Our movement model is designed closely around the real bio mechanics of biped locomotion; The result is a more human look and feel, and a character that is equipped to intelligently react to dangers far beyond what conventional movement code was designed to handle. It also features a full body IK system.

Resources and Economy - There will be many different resources in StarForge. However, the player can only hold so much at a time. When the player can no longer hold what he mined, he will have to build containers to store them into. This makes resources tangible and gives you the ability to steal other players resources.

Multiplayer & SinglePlayer - We have both modes playable in the game.

Survival - In this mode you are tasked with surviving on the planet. You will encounter enemies, find new blueprints, gather weapons, build a base, and so much more.

Creative - In this mode you have unlimited resources and can build at great speeds. You may also place creatures anywhere you want.

"Further updates will depend on future sales of the game."

They know this ♥♥♥♥ isn't gonna sell.

The devs recently abandoned this game, unfinished and completely falling flat on what was promised. Moving from alpha straight to release, weasling themselves away from the game, assumingly with money in their pocket.

Oh, also it hardly runs.

The very flagship of terrible early access games. One day this game was being worked upon and classified as an early alpha release. The very next day it just suddenly hit gold with a full skip on beta without the many promised features and the small amount of content it has are all plagued by glitches and bugs alike. And that is not all - many PCs have trouble running the game even at its current stage due to terrible optimization for top of the line gaming rigs.

I'm sad to say that I supported this game in early release. It was a very big let down.

By calling this a finished product means they gave up on it. Poor performance. There is really nothing to do in this game. Buggy. It's not even worth downloading if it were free. Such dissapointment.

How is this even out of alpha?! Are you kidding me?! So few updates during early access and complete failure to deliver on even the most basic of promises.

Game is completely broken in it's current 1.01 state. The game crashes most of the time while loading and if it does manage to load it will crash randomly during gameplay. Don't even try to build a base as it will dissapear as soon as you leave the game.

Another "Early Access Game' that delivers an unplayable product to paying customers.

If this game is left in this state something needs to change with Steams "No Refund Policy", this is unacceptable to the player base of this game.

I for one will never support another early access game.

Had a lot of potential, but they gave up and just released it as the full version. The game in its current (an final) state is very unfinished and bugy (and im not talking about alien bugs). Wont every buy another game from codehatch and do yourself a favor and do the same.

Such a disapointment....

I remember finding and buying this game about a year ago--oh the potential it had! It looked like it could be the "next big thing", filled with exploration, building, and fighting aliens. However, that was not what the beta was. The beta was nothing more than one clunky, poorly coded and balanced pile of nonesense that I couldn't even stand playing for long.

So of course I do what most do with an early access game: I simply let it be, follishly thinking that it would get better. This led to me launching it once every few months in hopes of seeing some improvement, but it barely did. The graphics are still horrendous (definitely NOT like the screenshot or trailer!) even on a high end computer at max settings, the ai for the monsters is bizarre and confusing and many of them just look odd, and if you want the building exprience this game offers then you might as well get hammered and play with legos, because that's about how coordinated and fluid this game's building system is.

I rarely regret games I purchase, but this is definitely one of those exceptions. This game SHOULD NOT be in anything else other than early beta in the state it's in! So turn away before you waste $20 on something so poorly made like myself and many others did!

If ever there was an indie game that gave indie games a bad rap, this would be it. After watching the original trailer (which I can no longer seem to locate), my friends and I bought a 4 pack of the pre-release game. We launched it shortly after, and yes before everyone goes "but it's in alpha" we knew this upon starting.

It took us over an hour just to get it running. It was laggy, non-intuitive and totally not at all representative of what the trailer showed. Turns out upon further investigation, the trailer was "simulated" gameplay not actual gameplay. Almost a year and a half later, the game is actually LESS functioning then the original. They've patched on a few bits here and there, but it's mostly just held together with some super glue and strongly worded prayers.

Worst, after making a ton of money from their indiegogo campaign and from their pre-release sales, they've simply run out of money. They've released the "full" version, which barely functions, with the "promise" of updating the bugs at a "later" date. And any future updates (aka more features, including almost all of the original promised ones) will "maybe" happen, if they make more money. If their past updates are any indications of what these could contain, I'm even more skeptical. I believe there have been four in the past 1.5 years... all have been lacking and oftentimes a patch would be released shortly afterwards which essentially removes all the added content from the update (due to all the bugs/non-playability issues). They even removed the ability to host your own server, because too many folks were having issues even getting something stable to run. :-/

So much disappoint. Go check out 7 days to die - now there's an indie game which has so much promise!!!! :)

I bought this game back when I had maybe 20-30 games on steam and most of those were from humble bundle. This game was so bad, I honestly tried to remove it from even showing up in my library as a downloadable option, before I knew you couldnt do that

Absolute pile of ♥♥♥♥. Unfinished, sloppy and definitely not worth the money. This is the problem with early access/crowd funding. You are expecting people to do good work AFTER they are paid.

I should preface this with review with this- I was once an owner of this game on Steam. It is now and probably forever will be the only game I've ever asked for a refund for, ever, from anywhere.

Originally, I bought this game after watching a few short reviews that gave it good praise for potential and watching the EA video. This was a mistake on my part- you see, some of the videos were a bit older and I assumed when I watched the EA trailer that the game had gotten more features (the stuff I saw in the EA video). In reality, the game had *lost* most of the features I had seen in the review videos, and the features it showed in the EA video- which explicitly stated "these are the things you can do in Starforge Alpha" were not, indeed, in the actual game.

So there was a humongous amount of false advertising, and I felt very, very burned by that. Valve made Starforge devs change their video because it was false advertising of the worst kind.

Please understand, if they'd been honest about their game and what it's current state was, that would have been fine. I don't have any problems with EA titles being unfinished or buggy. But it was a combination of the fact that the game was utter garbage (at the time just a boring, stale tower defense mode and an "open world" that was really just empty landscape with no ability to find extra resources or literally ANYTHING to do but walk around) *and* the fact that they lied about their product.

I see now that the game is "finished." I'm not really interested in putting more time into researching, but if you're thinking about getting it and you saw the EA trailer you might want to check on some things. Did going into space get added? That was a feature they claimed was already in. How about that awesome free-running we saw where the guy was tied to the back of the jeep and running behind it while being tossed around with cool physics- did that ever get added? I don't know. These are things you should look into if you're going to buy, though.

As for the game itself, please note that these things may have changed, but at the time I played it, it was boring, the action was absolutely stale, the guns were ridiculous looking but didn't have the ridiculous results you would hope for with such a spectacle. They all did exactly the same thing- put identical bullets downwind. It didn't matter whether you had a triple chainsaw double machine gun pistol. It just didn't matter.

Moving around always felt like your character was riding a unicycle, oddly tilty and awkward, falling over and reacting to the physics engine in the weirdest way possible.

There was no skill or challenge to the combat, just point the right way and wait for a few minutes and one of the dull, uninspired monsters would eventually die.

If this sounds like a scathing review- it is. I've played Flash games on Newgrounds I thought were better designed and more fun. Coupled with the false advertising and utterly unapologetic devs, even if this turned around and was the best shooter on the market now, I still wouldn't give them my money, and if I were you, I wouldn't either.

I made the mistake of getting this almost a year back, I heard they rolled back an update due to "issues" from a friend but I'd figured it would all be sorted in no time. To this day the features I was waiting for them to re-implement are not all there. Avoid this at all costs.

Grossly unoptimized garbage that is roughly a good 2-3 years from being even remotely "Finished". Don't mind my hours, I played this game mostly by pirating it and decided to get it off a re-seller to see on just how far they have come about 3-4 months into release and I still felt like It was pre-alpha with enemies appearing out of nowhere behind you as you mine, the UI being both concepted, drawn and written in paint and not until now do I realize on just how big of a mistake that was.

Plainly put, this is not a "RELEASE" and the game shouldn't be called as such.
