Week @ Code}{atch -- "Beta Release v0.8"

11 Juli 2014

Week @ Code}{atch -- "Beta Edition v0.8"

Howdy,

We've got the latest major update coming to you all live in time for the weekend! In this update, we give you all the much sought after smelter and refinery! Yes, now you don't have to hunt for your ingots (though that's still an occurance)! This is pretty fantastic news, as it also allows one to combine basic ores into advanced ores to be later smelted into the higher tier ingots required for the best equipment.

Check out the Refinery here:

The refinery helps players craft the more advanced ore in the game that cannot be mined, but must be combined in order to be obtained.

And next up, we have the Smelter:

This is the actual item used to convert ores into ingots

We're also bringing you more in the way of base defense, with the introduction of the inexpensive and fast-acting minigun turret, allowing players to secure rare deposits for their faction quickly. We're also introducing the much more powerful, elevated laser turret in order to create the feeling of a well-entrenched position.

The Minigun Turret

The minigun turret standing sentry at an outpost

And here we have the Laser Tower:

The Laser Tower fending off an attack on a mountainside.

With all these new defenses, you're probably wondering two things "How do I power them all?" and conversely "How do I shut them down in a confrontation?"

To answer the first question, we've added a new high-end power generator known as the Fusion Generator. It's radius is quite massive, and has the capability of powering several objects far away from it. And secondly, we've equipped players with a brand new grenade type, known as the EMP grenade. The EMP grenade specializes in shutting down turrets and other powered objects.

Check out this look at the Fusion Generator:

As was previewed on our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/StarForgeGame?ref=hl) we're introducing a new monster into the game! A custom creation of our own called the Jelly Puff! This species is reminiscent of spiders back on Earth, but with the ability to float like a jelly, and puff up and explode like a puffer fish. They're pretty deadly in close-quarters, so be careful when wandering about the crashed ships. They seem to be attracted to the radiation, so the stronger the emissions, the more likely you'll run into one of these guys.

An imposing close-up of the Jelly Puff:

Note: Not nearly as friendly as its name would imply

We've also spent a considerable amount of effort on fixing up the framerate issues related to creature spawning. There should also be dramatically less creatures and NPCs spawning, along with increased spawn timers as well, aiding the fix. We've also tidied up vehicle related issues as well, and made improvements to cave and tunnel generation.

Two more front-end changes that we've added to the game include a new weapon (omigosh!) and adding functionality to the paint-gun. Players are now able to paint themselves and each other, including their armor sets with the paintgun. There also is a hue-slider within the in-game settings menu, where one can dynamically change their hue.

The new weapon we've got is the double-barrelled shotgun! The players can now fire two intense rounds of buckshot fury into the faces of their greatest nemesis before reloading this beast.

Righteous Battlecry Optional (And Recommended!)

We're really excited to release this update, as we feel it ties up 0.7.5 quite nicely, and brings the progression of the development into an excellent launchpad for things to come.

Thanks so much for supporting us this far, I hope you guys enjoy playing the new update!

From everyone here at Code}{atch, have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

--Will

Om spelet

StarForge is a sci fi survival sandbox. Hunt to eat, dig for resources, craft many items, build a fort, and fight enemies in order to survive! Do this alone, or with other players, in a fully infinite procedural world.

Key Features in the StarForge Alpha:

Procedural Infinite Voxel Terrain - There are no set boundaries in StarForge; the planet will procedurally generate each time you start a new game. The terrain supports plains, mountains, deserts, mountains, caves, overhangs, rocks, and much more. The world is infinite, meaning you will be able to run in a single direction for as long as your computer can support it.

Underground/Surface/Space Gameplay - Build a tower that ascends into the clouds, through the atmosphere, then into space, and do this in real-time with no loading screens.

Dynamic RPG like World - Enjoy dynamic weather patterns, a 24 day and night cycle, and a real time atmosphere. Creatures will also have different behaviors at different times of the day.

Loot and Survive - Before the humans landed countless weapons and armor were sent to Atlas. You will find loot chests littered throughout the land, you will need their contents to survive.

Vehicle Gameplay - Hop on board a 4 wheeled all terrain vehicle with a friend and traverse the world. Or jump into a hovercraft for speedy terrain movement.

Procedural 3D Tileset - Build anything you want with our unique 3D Tilesets. You can create towns, villages, bridges, forts, and much more. It is also fully destructible! Ramps and stairs are also included.

Physics Sandbox - We are designing the world to be fully dynamic. This currently includes chopping down trees, turrets, and enemies.

Physics Movement - Our movement model is designed closely around the real bio mechanics of biped locomotion; The result is a more human look and feel, and a character that is equipped to intelligently react to dangers far beyond what conventional movement code was designed to handle. It also features a full body IK system.

Resources and Economy - There will be many different resources in StarForge. However, the player can only hold so much at a time. When the player can no longer hold what he mined, he will have to build containers to store them into. This makes resources tangible and gives you the ability to steal other players resources.

Multiplayer & SinglePlayer - We have both modes playable in the game.

Survival - In this mode you are tasked with surviving on the planet. You will encounter enemies, find new blueprints, gather weapons, build a base, and so much more.

Would've been a good game if you could actually do what was featured in the trailer... OR if there was a tutorial... Or if there were many helpfull players.... or if it wouldn't be impossible to get most things without cheating. Getting even the second drill can take hours upon hours, only to be taken away from you when the game spazzes out or the server resets.

Okay, there have been a lot of negative reviews for this game and a LOT of negative feedback that I personally find unhelpful. So, I'll try to post a few things that you should know about this game. When you take these things into consideration, I believe you will understand why I still support this game, and why I justify recommending it.

UPDATE: now that beta has been released I will focus a lot more on how the game is in its current state, as opposed to how it could be. Potential is something that I think is valid in a review, but a lot of you have asked for more current thoughts and I'm willing to oblige.

[IMPORTANT] If you just want my honest advice in a few short sentences, please scroll to the bottom of the review. It will be summarized very nicely there, as well as bold, italicized, and underlined, much like this portion.

So I'll start with the negatives, as I'd like to end on a positive note. After all, redemption and restoration is what we should be striving for and looking forward to instead of the depression and negative thoughts. So, bad things about the game. As hard as it is, I'll try to be brief.

-Progress is slow. Not as slow as it used to be, but slow. If you're looking for weekly updates, look somewhere else. As it stands, they have roughly monthly updates.
-The content is still a little bit lacking. The developers had a goal from the beginning with their IGG campaign. I won't go into the details, but if you Google image search "StarForge stretch goals" you can see some of what their ideas were for the game. And they haven't quite made it there yet.
-Public relations are... sketchy at best. It is hard to defend this game, especially against volatile people who feel as if they have been cheated. The developers don't do much talking, though Will has made a lot more posts as of late. RightClick, while very vocal, just is not as official as hearing from an official developer. Especially with all the controversy surrounding his entry as Community Manager (which, while I think is ridiculous, should at least be mentioned).
-The game, while it has a lot of content, is simply not gripping at the moment. As we came into the beta, I've found that the world is just a little bit more fun to explore, and has a lot more in terms of content. In my previous review, I said that the game could be explored in under an hour. This is no longer true, but I shifted this point so that I can say that I'm no longer motivated to play for an hour.
-The game is buggy and pretty slow. Yeah, I won't waste many words on this. However, since they now have 64bit support, I'm excited to see how much this improves. And yeah, with every update optimization improves a little bit. It's just not huge enough to make me care. ;)

One thing that I would like to mention, and it probably warrants going in the negative section is this: this game is not guaranteed to reach a completed state, and as I understand things you are not guaranteed your money back. Well, perhaps if you bought it through Steam, but if you supported it on IGG as I did, then it counted only as a pledge, not so much an investment as a donation. A lot of people feel that they were cheated out of their money, and while on Steam that might be true, the IGG backers have no reason to claim that. Unfortunate, yes. Cheated, no. I just thought I should clarify that.

----------

Now those were some of the most prominent negatives, though I'm sure many of my friends can (and will) expand on my points in wonderful detail. I'm all for increasing discussion, but if you enter here please stay respectful. I will now go onto the positives, many of which expand off the negatives. And that's where I find the redemptive aspect of this game: I look at the negatives, and I see where they CAN improve, and I see where they HAVE improved. I see progress in this game where not many people do. So, here's what I found to be positive about the game, as well as redemptive of the negatives:

-The concept is amazing. Like, very amazing. This is my dream game as well as that of many other fellow nerds. If they can succeed, this game will have been worth every penny.
-The current level of content proves that they are working on the game, and can produce a finished product. I'm not sure what that finished product will look like, but they can definitely make one. Also, from the looks of it, as the team gains more experience working on the game, updates are coming out a lot faster, as well as having much more content in them.
-The PR that I mentioned earlier, while still sketchy at best, is definitely improving. At least from what I've seen (although I'm sure many others have had varying experience) Right Click is doing a good job at increasing communication to us, the players. I've talked personally with him and I am assured that he does have the best interests of the community in his heart.
-Progress is very steady. With the exception of the update that led us into beta (which took two months instead of one), the devs have released a large monthly update without fail since around the time that RightClick stepped into position. Every month. And the updates are actually very nicely sized for their timing. It's not an overwhelming amount of content (like when Terraria updates, lol) but it's also not miniscule. I think it's just right.

This paragraph was originally about 64bit support. Now that it's here.... yay! I'm quite glad, and though it remains to be seen, I believe that the game will be moving along faster, enjoy greater amounts of content with each update, and generally improve greatly. Especially for optimization, as computers can now allocate much more RAM than when it was in 32bits.

IMPORTANT BIT HERE I have one last thing to say about this review. Quite a few people have offered concern that this review is about a dream for the game, and not the game itself. While I've changed the body of the review to accommodate that more, I believe that in Early Access especially we can't do much except hope for the game. And I don't believe that hope is unfounded, or uneducated. So while your concerns are entirely valid, I'm not sure you got the point of the review. All the same, I thank you for reading and I hope that you offer your advice/opinions regardless.

So here's my honest advice about this game, if you're on the line about buying it or not: Wait. Watch. Listen. Do your own research, and wait a few months to see if they can prove that they can do what they claim they can. And in the meantime, feel free to join our little community. It gets lonely up there sometimes, and we're always happy to have you.

http://www.forgeforums.com/ Those are the online forums, which I have found to be much more helpful and friendly than the Steam forums. Visit us there. You don't even need to own the game, and it's a great way to monitor the status of the game while getting to know some really great people. My name and avatar are the same on there as they are on here, so tell me that you read this and gimme a "hey". Don't be shy. And that is my review of the game, such as it is. Please leave your comments below, and leave them civilly if you will.

This game legitimately makes me angry it even exists. The game itself is an atrocity, the devs and community is what puts the cherry on the top of this terrible cake. Even now that it is in Beta, I am still disappointed by its lacklustreness.

What is wrong? Everything. The game is one of those style games that tries to hop onto too many bandwagons for its own good, trying to appeal to as many of steams userbase as possible, without satisfying any of them to any degree. Anyway you look at it, whether its the actual gameplay, or the music and sounds, it is terrible and cliché to no end.

The game runs worse than Skyrim with max everything mods, with enb's, running on my easy bake oven that I had when I was six years old. I understand it is unfinished, and an indie title. But there is such thing as ambition, and being too ambitious and going for a game that would be super intensive for even the best developers, is not how to start. Starting small can be good sometimes, and this is not this developers first game either, so I do not know what was running through their heads/

The game is not fun in any way, except maybe in a Gmod style sheer stupidity of the whole situation-style of fun. Many people who say they “have fun” may just be secretly regretting their purchese and just want to justify spending upwards of $75 dollars on this game.

To compound this, the game's community is pretty much dead and dying. The forums are barren, most of the old regulars have moved on, and the player base is a ghost town. Only time play numbers raise by anything is when there is an update, but by now, nobody seems to care anymore about the game, so even then the numbers only raise slightly. (Source) Even after the supposed Beta update “fixed the game”, the player number still trail off pitifully to dismal numbers. This is not good for a multiplayer hyped game.

Then of course, there is the developers, who happen to be the reason I am writing this review. They produce updates at an abysmal pace, and release very little noteworthy content when they do make something. Their “backend tech” fails on every corner, as it none of it works properly, or the stock unity versions are far superior then the custom one they made. In the past they used to cause community upheaval by making promises to do something, then never fulfilling these promises.

This is what we call lying. They did it quite a bit, but they seemed to have learned their lesson. But would you want to trust someone who lies to their player base about updates, and update schedules, with making a game with your money?

They made numerous other highly questionable and shady actions, like unceremoniously canning their excellent community manager from 2013, and replacing them with someone who caused innumerable PR nightmares. If this is their idea of a good decision towards “improving” the forums, then I would question their decisions regarding their game design as well, as the game thus far is a monstrosity.

The best analogy I can come up for the game it is like the monster Frankenstein. It has changed so much over its development, from starting as a F2P MMO shooter, to a space epic being able to fly across the stars, to a sandbox building game and tower defence strategy game, to finally a mishmash of all what it used to be into one messy monster. Is is just a complete disaster.

I feel sorry for the people who paid money for this game, especially the game's legend perk owners. Let's just forget this game happened, and move on to better things.

***This review is outdated and there have been many updates. i doubt i will ever play the game again though since it left such a bad impression. what you read below may or may not be accurate anymore***

The trailers for starforge are incredibly misleading and make the game seem about zillion times better than the experience it gives in its current state. I bought it and it is the only early access game i regret buying. given the time they have had and the results given it is very very concerning to say the least. Thats not to say they cant accomplish something here cause they could for sure with all the potential this game has. as of right now i would tell everyone not to buy starforge untill there are some MAJOR updates that show vast improvements.

when/if there are changes i will update my review but as of January 2014 its a clear and loud NO
