Patch #3 for 0.7.5 Released!

This patch addresses some issues that have come up. Below is a summary of some of the more visible fixes that have been put into this build. Unfortunately, users may experience some strangeness with older saved games with the new build and servers will have their content reset.

- Blocks should no longer vanish in a variety of circumstances
- Items will no longer disappear after walking far enough away from them
- Fixed an issue where players would spawn beneath the vat occasionally and not be able to move
- Ingots will now consistently stack properly
- Items will now be deducted from the inventory when placed under high latency situations
- Corpses will now roll away from the player less easily
- Logging out of the game from below ground will no longer result in falling through the world
- Weapons looted from the corpses of other players should now function correctly
- Sleeping players should no longer spawn beneath the terrain
- Logging out inside of the crashed ship should no longer cause you to be in a different location when you log back in
- Cut down trees should not roll away so easily
- Vehicles should no longer disappear when logging out and back in again

- Grenades properly hurt wooden blocks now
- Breach charges should be more useful now

- Heavy Minigun added as a new weapon!

Hey guys, so this week was pretty monumental for everyone here at Code}{atch and the community. We graduated from Alpha into Beta, with the release of 0.7.5 this week. And so far the responses have been absolutely fantastic! It's really good to see so many of you enjoying and playing Starforge! We've worked really hard on this update, and making sure it's running as smooth as we can.

This week was dominated largely by bug fixes, as evidenced with the release of a couple of hotfixes. We've introduced a new creature this week, the Daperdillo. An animal of prey that is considerably tougher than the lovable Wurmi, but filled to the brim with meat and interesting loot drops. They also feature a distinctive green glow, not as intense as the Wurmi's but bioluminescent all the same.

Moving onto something that the development team has been working on integrating has been increasing some base defences. We have a new turret that'll help enterprising colonists on Atlas have an edge over their peers, introducing the Mini-Gun turret:

The minigun turret features two six-barrelled guns running in parallel on a 360 degree swivel that will be ideal in anti-personnel roles in just about any deployment. Ideal for defense of mining operations when it becomes necessary to secure a node for an extended period of time.

And of course, another peice that is being worked on going into the game shortly is the Smelter. Our artists are hard at work making it come to life and we cannot wait to show it off to you!

The bug fixes we've worked on this week are myriad. They include:

- Fixing the garage doors from having different textures

- Fixing sleeper names from being incorrect

- Currently making breach charges damage blocks properly

Another notable and major bug fix that actually went out this week, was related to our dedicated servers. After we launched, we had discovered that the servers were creating hundreds of instances of Starforge and running them simultaneously. This warranted bringing the servers down, patching them and updating them to ensure this performance leak did not occur again. We've since been paying close attention to our servers and tending to them as the week has gone on.

We've also put in considerable effort into resolving any saving issues in regards to placeable items including blocks. We've also encountered some spawning issues post-release that we're taking care of right now as well. Also, we've fixed the creatures glitching out when they're killed, and are working on when to implement that fix.

Alright, moving along to more content, some of you have probably noticed the white barrier that appears when you reach the edge of the play area, and that is being generated by the World Spire. Right now, we're using the VAT as a placeholder for this:

The world spire is responsible for generating the prisoner field, and is located at the origin point. There are plans for game mechanics revolving around the World Spire that will be touched on as it is developed.

As you all may know, we have the Rusty Assault Rifle, and the Assault Rifle, a better, shinier and more accurate version of the same thing. But did you know we're also working on upgrades to the Mini-Gun and Chainsaw? Check them out here:

As you can see, we've been quite hard at work on the Beta, making sure you all get the amazing content you deserve from the Art Team's efforts, and employing the Programming Team to smooth out and stabilize the online play experience as much as possible.

We've been very excited about this release, and cannot wait to introduce more content on bigger, smoother servers.

Key Features in the StarForge Alpha:

Procedural Infinite Voxel Terrain - There are no set boundaries in StarForge; the planet will procedurally generate each time you start a new game. The terrain supports plains, mountains, deserts, mountains, caves, overhangs, rocks, and much more. The world is infinite, meaning you will be able to run in a single direction for as long as your computer can support it.

Underground/Surface/Space Gameplay - Build a tower that ascends into the clouds, through the atmosphere, then into space, and do this in real-time with no loading screens.

Okay, there have been a lot of negative reviews for this game and a LOT of negative feedback that I personally find unhelpful. So, I'll try to post a few things that you should know about this game. When you take these things into consideration, I believe you will understand why I still support this game, and why I justify recommending it.

UPDATE: now that beta has been released I will focus a lot more on how the game is in its current state, as opposed to how it could be. Potential is something that I think is valid in a review, but a lot of you have asked for more current thoughts and I'm willing to oblige.

[IMPORTANT] If you just want my honest advice in a few short sentences, please scroll to the bottom of the review. It will be summarized very nicely there, as well as bold, italicized, and underlined, much like this portion.

So I'll start with the negatives, as I'd like to end on a positive note. After all, redemption and restoration is what we should be striving for and looking forward to instead of the depression and negative thoughts. So, bad things about the game. As hard as it is, I'll try to be brief.

-Progress is slow. Not as slow as it used to be, but slow. If you're looking for weekly updates, look somewhere else. As it stands, they have roughly monthly updates.
-The content is still a little bit lacking. The developers had a goal from the beginning with their IGG campaign. I won't go into the details, but if you Google image search "StarForge stretch goals" you can see some of what their ideas were for the game. And they haven't quite made it there yet.
-Public relations are... sketchy at best. It is hard to defend this game, especially against volatile people who feel as if they have been cheated. The developers don't do much talking, though Will has made a lot more posts as of late. RightClick, while very vocal, just is not as official as hearing from an official developer. Especially with all the controversy surrounding his entry as Community Manager (which, while I think is ridiculous, should at least be mentioned).
-The game, while it has a lot of content, is simply not gripping at the moment. As we came into the beta, I've found that the world is just a little bit more fun to explore, and has a lot more in terms of content. In my previous review, I said that the game could be explored in under an hour. This is no longer true, but I shifted this point so that I can say that I'm no longer motivated to play for an hour.
-The game is buggy and pretty slow. Yeah, I won't waste many words on this. However, since they now have 64bit support, I'm excited to see how much this improves. And yeah, with every update optimization improves a little bit. It's just not huge enough to make me care. ;)

One thing that I would like to mention, and it probably warrants going in the negative section is this: this game is not guaranteed to reach a completed state, and as I understand things you are not guaranteed your money back. Well, perhaps if you bought it through Steam, but if you supported it on IGG as I did, then it counted only as a pledge, not so much an investment as a donation. A lot of people feel that they were cheated out of their money, and while on Steam that might be true, the IGG backers have no reason to claim that. Unfortunate, yes. Cheated, no. I just thought I should clarify that.


Now those were some of the most prominent negatives, though I'm sure many of my friends can (and will) expand on my points in wonderful detail. I'm all for increasing discussion, but if you enter here please stay respectful. I will now go onto the positives, many of which expand off the negatives. And that's where I find the redemptive aspect of this game: I look at the negatives, and I see where they CAN improve, and I see where they HAVE improved. I see progress in this game where not many people do. So, here's what I found to be positive about the game, as well as redemptive of the negatives:

-The concept is amazing. Like, very amazing. This is my dream game as well as that of many other fellow nerds. If they can succeed, this game will have been worth every penny.
-The current level of content proves that they are working on the game, and can produce a finished product. I'm not sure what that finished product will look like, but they can definitely make one. Also, from the looks of it, as the team gains more experience working on the game, updates are coming out a lot faster, as well as having much more content in them.
-The PR that I mentioned earlier, while still sketchy at best, is definitely improving. At least from what I've seen (although I'm sure many others have had varying experience) Right Click is doing a good job at increasing communication to us, the players. I've talked personally with him and I am assured that he does have the best interests of the community in his heart.
-Progress is very steady. With the exception of the update that led us into beta (which took two months instead of one), the devs have released a large monthly update without fail since around the time that RightClick stepped into position. Every month. And the updates are actually very nicely sized for their timing. It's not an overwhelming amount of content (like when Terraria updates, lol) but it's also not miniscule. I think it's just right.

This paragraph was originally about 64bit support. Now that it's here.... yay! I'm quite glad, and though it remains to be seen, I believe that the game will be moving along faster, enjoy greater amounts of content with each update, and generally improve greatly. Especially for optimization, as computers can now allocate much more RAM than when it was in 32bits.

IMPORTANT BIT HERE I have one last thing to say about this review. Quite a few people have offered concern that this review is about a dream for the game, and not the game itself. While I've changed the body of the review to accommodate that more, I believe that in Early Access especially we can't do much except hope for the game. And I don't believe that hope is unfounded, or uneducated. So while your concerns are entirely valid, I'm not sure you got the point of the review. All the same, I thank you for reading and I hope that you offer your advice/opinions regardless.

So here's my honest advice about this game, if you're on the line about buying it or not: Wait. Watch. Listen. Do your own research, and wait a few months to see if they can prove that they can do what they claim they can. And in the meantime, feel free to join our little community. It gets lonely up there sometimes, and we're always happy to have you.

This game legitamitely makes me angry it even exists. The game itself is an atrocity, the devs and community is what puts the cherry on the top of this terrible cake.

What is wrong? Everything. Unfinished, unoptimised, clunky, lack of any sort of focus on anything. It cannot decide if it wants the Gmod ADHD crowd, the 12 year old minecraft crowd, or the teenage NEET crowd. Anyway you look at it, whether its the actual gameplay, or the music and sounds, it is terrible and cliché to no end.

The game runs worse than skyrim with max everything mods, with enb's, running on my easy bake oven that I had when I was six years old. I understand it is unfinished, and an indie title. But there is such thing as ambition, and being too ambitious and going for a game that would be super intensive for even the best developers, is not how to start. Starting small can be good sometimes, something that seems to have flown over the devs heads.

The game is not fun in any way, except for maybe sheer stupidity. Anyone telling you any different is lying to your face, and must find paint drying to be a masterpiece of the action-thriller genre. Or they must have a serious case of buyers-regret-placebo-effect going on psychologically, causing them to percieve fun (or try to do stuff that could on some remote planet be called fun).

Then there is the the people who surround the game. If it was not for them, I would not go so far as to make this review. The developers themselves are slower than frozen maple syrup at producing updates. As in, claiming now that you have a bigger team and can push out updates faster, then not producing updates faster, is counter productive and downright lying. As a former forum moderator for this monstrosity, I cannot even begin to tell the stories of how I had to help them lie to keep them from getting in hot water.

Another nail in the coffin of this game was the community manager situation. In 2013, the game had a great community manager, who was uncerimoniously canned. Why? It is not for me to say. Either way, they were replaced with some hick who spouts cheesy lines of dialogue whenever he soever pleases, and who cannot say the right thing to a situation to save his life. This only makes it even more terrible, not only was the games only real community manager fired, but replaced by a ignoramous monkey.

Surrounding this is the actual community of people. The devs for this game have done one thing in a decent time, polarising these people into two categories: We hate the game and community, and the super-uber-mega-fanboys. You can tell where their pool of moderator's will come from, which is bad, because they only add fuel to the hater's flamethrowers. Why bring this up? Because another hate thread has been locked on the forums by one of the fanboy moderators. Whether it deserved the lock or not is not my job anymore, but failing to have an open discussion and grasping at your power to appease your dev overlords is not how it is supposed to be done.

Last but not least, the game is pretty much dying and dead. The forums are barren, most of the old regulars have moved on, and the player base is a ghost town. Only time play numbers raise by anything is when there is an update, but by now, nobody seems to care anymore about the game, so even then the numbers only raise slightly. (Source)

I feel sorry for the people who paid money for this game, especially the game's legend perk owners. Let's just forget this game happened, and move on to better things.

***This review is outdated and there have been many updates. i doubt i will ever play the game again though since it left such a bad impression. what you read below may or may not be accurate anymore***

The trailers for starforge are incredibly misleading and make the game seem about zillion times better than the experience it gives in its current state. I bought it and it is the only early access game i regret buying. given the time they have had and the results given it is very very concerning to say the least. Thats not to say they cant accomplish something here cause they could for sure with all the potential this game has. as of right now i would tell everyone not to buy starforge untill there are some MAJOR updates that show vast improvements.

when/if there are changes i will update my review but as of January 2014 its a clear and loud NO

This game has GREAT potential and I am very excited to see it progress BUT... instead of this being an alpha it feels more like an experimental game closely resembling a game you may very well know as DayZ Standalone. The updates coming from the developers at Code}{atch are quite like the updates from DayZ which have been adding things to the game that the game currently does not need. Such things include a rifle that colors structures and items or a new shiny tile that you can build buildings with. These "updates" don't help the game's progress, what the game really needs is optimization so it can at least be playable. They have been recently focusing primarly on multiplayer with a game that you can barely play as is which in my opinion is not the way you should develop a game that isnt finished to begin with. In short the game SHOULD NOT be bought at its current stage. All negativity aside, the game *if Code}{atch does what they promised* WILL be very fun and may even be the "new" Minecraft.

Pros: The game is graphically beautiful
Has amazingly great potential
Very VERY deep digging
Alot of upcoming features
Interesting creatures
Perfect and amazing geography

Cons: Slow and meager updates most of which don't help the game
Highly unplayable beyond expectation

My thoughts: Needs alot of work and main focus needs to be redirected to the real problem of unplayability. Do not buy if you expect alot of content or hours of entertainment.

THIS is the kind of updates they SHOULD have been doing in the first place! So far I am very pleased
with the additons, they even optimized a good bit enough to be playable. I put a few more hours into
the survival mode and I like what I see... BUT will this change my view as well as the other players' view? To be honest... maybe but still not enough to give this game a thumbs up. If Code}{atch keeps pumping on the updates with LOTS of content and a bit faster than they have been, then the future of StarForge will be profitable and might be worth buying into "Early Access".

Lets look at the pros and cons of the recent update...

Pros: Better optimization, its actually playable for once
Looting of Leeches and other creatures
More lights
Working doors
Many many bugfixes
Memory dumping fixed

Cons: Physics of Leeches are very poor due to them chasing me by flopping everywhere (they should have fixed that before they released the update and they were not like that before the update)

My thoughts: Love the update but I have a feeling that the update train is going to be "delayed" due to Code}{atch's void of updates. Is it worth buying yet? No, but it might be if they provide loaded future updates like this one. I dare Code}{atch to prove me wrong. Still not enough playability to call it an "Alpha", I have seen alphas that had more playability. One of which is Stonehearth ( http://stonehearth.net/ ) and best of all, they actually tell you what they are working on currently very very VERY often and you can even watch them work on it. So if you want to see a company that actually has their stuff together, check them out and you will know why I am not happy with StarForge's lack progress.

So you most likely came here wondering whether or not this game is worth the money. Some of you probably checked the forums and saw some… unsettling things. I’m gonna lay everything out in front of you in a few parts. If you already know how the game is and just want my opinion, skip down to the >>> symbols. Lets Begin!

StarForge has two modes as of now: Survival and Fort Defence, both of which can be played online in multiplayer. In Survival Mode, players must gather resources to forge (craft/create) shelter, tools and vehicles while avoiding or overpowering the local wild life in a procedurally infinite voxel world. Next we have Fort Defense. In this mode players must defend their VAT from attacking creatures by creating barriers, auto defences and with their own weaponry. So thats the basics, now lets tear this bad boy apart.

You can gather resources in 3 ways. Mining ores with the Drill tool, cutting trees to collect wood with a chainsaw, and by recycling items in your inventory. The minable resources are Iron, stone and oil. You can also collect dirt and sand, but do not have a craftable use yet. Items that can be crafted with this are weapons ( a double barrel assault rifle and a weapon that is randomly generated apon making), various Drills each with different stats, a chainsaw (which can be used as a weapon aswell), placeable lighting systems, vehicles ranging from terrain to hover cars, ammunition, auto defenses, power systems and blocks. Power systems like generators power auto defences. currently there are two auto defences, the laser turret and the rocket turret. These auto defenses fire at anything that isnt a player. Finally, to clarify something brought up earler, the VAT is a huge mechanical thing that acts as a respawn point. You will start every game by one.

As for difficulty, both modes present creatures that are native to the planet you play on named Atlas. Currently there are only two, the Leech and the Eye Monster (not sure about the second name). The leech simply runs at you and bites you. The Eye Monster fires lasers out of its eye and can fly. Also, your character has three life bars basically. One for the head, body, and lower body. If one goes to zero, you are done. Thats basically it for danger. That and other players if you play online.

Survival mode on the other hand is quite enjoyable… if you are playing on a US military mainframe. Players with computers of all strengths notice lag, some more than others, due to the games low optimization, and the fact its currently running in 32 bits. But back to survival. If you manage to play it smoothly, you can easily get a few hours out of it. Collecting resources is a breeze, but as you start to go farther from the VAT, staying alive becomes a priority because you cannot set up a second spawn point. If you die you will start all the way back at the beginning. Dying isnt much of an issue either. Both creatures as mentioned before are not very tough to kill, the leech being the easiest due to its lame AI. Oh, and did you get excited when I said you could build hover cars and all those other things? Yeah well, you gotta find them first. Each forgeable (or craftable) item has a blueprint that can be found in chests scattered randomly in the world. Each one is kinda far from each other, so mentally prepare yourself for alot of traveling. Vehicles make it easier but then again, they arnt the most reliable mode of transportation. Weird physics can make them bouncy, and the hover cars are just… ugh. I havent gotten to use them alot in this update because of the blueprint stuff, but when i cheated them in they were alright.

Before, I had a section dedicated to how bad the playable character was but hes definitely gotten better. This update comes with a dramatic character design change that I believe is for the better. Everything about this character is physics based, so SOMETIMES he might seem a little bouncy, even though it hasnt disturbed my gameplay thus far. This character can be played from First and Third person views. First person is ok, its the Third Person I have a problem with. The cursor is offset to the right by ALOT. You litterally can’t much on the right side of the cursor, and thats just NO GOOD. It should be just a simple over the shoulder view, like Mass Effect. The character also gets sorta distorted in some areas when holding an item. Havent tried multiplayer yet, so cant comment on that. I think thats basically it. This game isnt too complicated yet, but alot more fleshed out than before. My final verdict…

I recommend this game… ONLY to those who got cash to spare and are willing to wait for its completion. This game has a rocky history of long wait times between updates, but has been picking up the pace recently. The developers CodeHatch are also very open about the games development with the community, posting progress updates each week on their blog and interacting with the community on the forums. Next update looks SICK too!
