That evil, no-good hag of a witch Mizrabel (HA, Miserable...get it?) is at it again—no longer content with attempting to murder Snow White for being prettier, she's kidnapped Mickey Mouse's main squeeze Minnie in an attempt to steal her youth. Armed only with his plucky attitude, dogged determination and a mean throwing arm, Mickey immediately sets out to rescue the love of his life from Mizrabel's lair, the titular Castle of Illusion.

Castle of Illusion takes the 1990 Sega Genesis title and spiffs it up with some voice-acting and sharp graphics, but at its core it remains a side-scrolling, two-dimensional platformer.

It looks like Sega Studios Australia enjoyed twisting the concept of "side-scrolling", though. The linear stages mix up the traditional "go right" design by taking advantage of the new three-dimensional engine. Paths weave into the background or curve along cylindrical towers in twisting, circuitous routes that double back on each other at unexpected moments. Some stages even shift to a top-down perspective, allowing Mickey free, unfettered access to all three dimensions of movement.

Also new in this remake is a hub area where Mickey can roam around, viewing anything he's unlocked and can select levels to journey to, provided he has enough gems to unlock them.

The levels are whimsical affairs - Mickey travels through exotic locales like haunted forests, undersea ruins, and a world of sugar and candy found within a cup of tea. Accompanied by the ever-present narrator, Mickey navigates these fantastical lands in pursuit of Mizrabel's henchmen and the seven rainbow gems they carry. These gems will open a path to the boss witch herself at the top of the Castle.

Of course, with new dimensions comes a change in controls. Mickey's jumping skills are serviceable, but feel weightless. This shift makes leaping difficult to control, and the top-down segments can aggravate the problem with the lack of depth perception—it's sometimes hard to know if Mickey has jumped high enough to clear his jump.

Swimming segments are where the controls suffer the most. Mickey has all the maneuverability of a steamboat, and requires constant buttonmashing to travel with any speed. Mercifully, these swimming sections are both infrequent and brief.

Other than the somewhat floaty controls, there are no real flaws in Castle of Illusion. It's a short game that's easy to complete in a night or two, and it offers collectibles for those who want some replay. It's charming and well-polished, but players craving challenge might be disappointed. On the other hand, people wanting to relax with something that doesn't require a huge investment of time or effort should consider joining Mickey on his newest mousecapade.

The Good:
Based on a classic
Solid platformer gameplay
Cute story
Lots of collectibles

The Bad:
If you don't like Disney you won't like this
Do not expect this as a simple remake
Mostly quite easy besides getting all collectibles and a couple boss fights

Castle of Illusion was one of my favorite Genesis games, so I was very interested in this. It was a pleasant surprise to find that although this is not really a remake at all, but instead was a whole new game based on the themes, enemy movements, and basic premises of the original. Hence we have a classic based on a classic.

The game will move from 2D to 3D seamlessly, and without any controllable camera, so if you don't like this (like on Yoshi's story to some degree), you might dislike the game. I found it to work well combined with charming graphics and fun but simple platforming. The boss fights are interesting and unique, and the final boss fight is a satisfying challenge. Throw unlockable costumes to the mix for collecting hidden secrets and you've got a great game.

An absolute joy but you MUST have a beefy enough graphics card. I enjoyed this far more than the original Mega Drive/Genesis version, which itself was great fun.

The level designs are so slick and some of the graphics (especially the candy/cake section) are fantastic. The remixed music isn't overly impressive, but you can choose the original tracks which is a nice touch. Also, the voice-overs grate (but can be switched off).

It is just a shame the game is quite short and fairly easy, but to me is still worth buying even at full price (which I did).

The art of this game is gorgeous, obviously because it's Disney. The controls are pretty easy but some of the levels in the beginning don't seem very easy and might discourage play. But once you get past the pesky ones, it gets pretty good. Just be careful where you jump...there are tons of pitfalls that are hard for someone like me who sucks at virtual par-cor.

An adequate platformer, this game is brought down by shoddy controls (I feel like there's a lag, but it could be the timing problems posted here and elsewhere), awful cameras that don't always show Mickey or his next destination (requiring you to jump blindly and hope for the best), and overall quality issues (e.g. audio balance for surround systems, frame rate at launch, etc.)

It's not the worst way to spend a weekend, and if you get it for a few dollars, I'd say take a chance. Otherwise, there are so many fantastic platformers available, why settle for something average?

edit: Maybe I'm being too hard on it, so I'll come back and update once I've found all the collectibles and whatnot. In the meantime, I will say this: It's a pretty easy game, and the visuals and audio (despite the bizarre volume levels) are both nice. In other words, it could totally pass as a great family game, or as a gateway title. For these reasons, I've changed my review to a positive.

A very cute, simple and kid friendly platform game. The graphics are crisp and perfectly cartoony. The action is simple, maybe too easy. The gameplay is smooth and fluid. All in all, it's not worth the price they are asking for it, but pick this up when it's on sale. Definitely pick this up if you play with your kids.

Quite simply, Castle of Illusion is a fun game to play. And, shoot, Mickey's game is lookin' great with the remake. However, it's very simplistic and can be finished within a couple of hours. So, it's highly over-priced.

If you can pick it up for a few bucks, it's worth it. Otherwise, it's probably best to think long and hard about whether this is a game you want to spend much money on. Still, I give it a thumbs up. I never got to play it when I was kid, but all these years later, I'm glad I finally got the chance. I just wish there was more to it.

A surprisingly good game, the environments are beautiful and Mickey's animations are really well done, the music is pretty decent and there are hidden Mickeys scattered around the various worlds, sadly the game doesn't last very long and isn't very hard, though the floaty controls can and will mess up a few of your jumps.

All in all a solid game, I would recommend it as a casual thing to pass the time.

Very polished re-imagining of one of the best Genesis games out there.

I like that they stayed faithful to the classic game, without making a straight up carbon copy. The few risks they took with the game really paid off.

The game's visuals and art-style are of traditional Disney quality. The game looks good, runs well, and invokes the magical nostalgia factor of the original throughout.

The new 2.5D platforming was fairly simple, rarely a challenge, but overall a lot of fun (exactly the way I feel about the Genesis version). I read some reviews that complained that the controls were bad, or that they were experiencing input lag... I am using a decent gaming PC, Windows 8.1 with an Xbox 360 wired controller, and I experienced neither of these problems.

I recommend this for fans of Castle of Illusion on the Genesis, SEGA fanboys, Disney freaks, and basically anyone who enjoys a solid platformer.

Similar to Super Mario 64, only big difference is that this is a side scroller.

EDIT: THIS GAME IS ALSO SUPER HARD.

If you are looking at this game for nostalgia reasons or a challenge, look elsewhere. A decent player will finish it in under 2 hours. 100% in 6 or less.

If you have kids that are young (seven and under), then I can recommend it. My nephew has trouble playing it, but he does enjoy it. So does my niece. They die a lot though, so I hacked it to give them 99 lives.

The game has issues and is at times unplayable! I don't know if these issues are system specific, but it will often stutter on certain resolutions and refresh rates. On a different system, I couldn't even launch it because the monitor didn't support the res or refresh rate that the game was defaulting in. I had to find a regedit hack on the forum to force the game to launch windowed so I got manipulate the settings. Pretty silly considering how simple it is.

An extraordinarily beautiful-looking update of the classic Megadrive game that fun to play and visually engaging but lacks depth and replayability. A shame really because the game really does look and sound the part.

Recommended really only for its visuals as the gameplay lasts only a few short hours.

90's nostalgia platforming all nicely wrapped up in a Disney package. It's short, surprisingly difficult, and quite campy, but it's still fun. The controls are tight and function perfectly with the precision jumping. The game looks nice and has some fantastic art design. It's just a shame it's on the short side and there aren't any additional challenges to complete once you've beaten the game, unless you're an absolute completionist.

Pick it up for a cheaper price. It would be worth it within the $5-10 range if you're into Disney and 90s era platforming.

Good story and graphics! High replayabilty thanks to the achievements and costumes etc! I have 8.9 hours played, but 2 of them I was idle! I finished the game in 5 hours and spent another 2 hours replaying the levels to do the time attacks and get all the collectables! Worth the money, especially since I got it for £2.50 on the www.HumbleBundle.com! Great game!

Old-school trickery

Personal Rating: "Worth purchasing"
Genre: Third Person Action Adventure/Platformer

Disney was no stranger to the late eighties and nineties consoles back when it was Nintendo waging a console war with SEGA. Arguably two of the most memorable titles for each system were Ducktales for the NES and Castle of Illusion for the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis. Ducktales had the edge - being more fiendishly difficult than Mickey Mouse's SEGA outing but both exuded charm and were bestsellers on either system.

Cut forward 25+ years to the year 2013 as both popular titles re-emerged in full HD glory for a new generation of gamers and for the first time ever - debuting on the PC. I can see that the more modern gamer will probably find the gameplay on display here a bit antiquated and Castle of Illusion will possibly hold very little appeal for them (outside of the Mickey Mouse and Disney connection) but it's clear the intention here - Castle of Illusion is a love letter to the gamer that cut his/her teeth on these kind of games in the past. While Ducktales: Remasterd is a scene by scene remake (with newly implemented graphical cut-scenes), Castle of Illusion is more of a re-imagining taking the five levels of illusion Mickey must traverse in order to save his dearly beloved, Minnie Mouse, from the clutches of the evil witch Mizrabel and giving each of them a modern spin and a completely new lick of paint. Each of these worlds, like the original, are split into two relatively short levels with the third housing a boss battle for Mickey to overcome.

I had great fun playing this game as a child back in the early nineties so it was pure nostalgic delight exploring these redesigned levels that pay due homage to the levels from the old SEGA classic. While I never found the game on the Mega Drive to be particularly challenging it was certainly a fun romp for my childlike sensibilities back then and this remake of Castle of Illusion fits the bill quite nicely. Most experienced platform gamers will breeze through Castle of Illusion in a jiffy but the controls are tight (except for the swimming sections where it feels like one is trying to maneuver a tank through a mouse hole) and for the most part the game plays and looks beautiful on modern systems.

Castle of Illusion is a simple platformer and when put under scrutiny one can see how mechanically game development has moved along in leaps and bounds - you just have to compare this title with the recently released Rayman Legends to see that Castle of Illusion is nothing more than a nostalgic time-capsule that embraces an age when games were far more simpler and innocent without all the moral grey areas that encapsulates modern gaming today.

If you have fond memories of playing through Castle of Illusion as a child, I wouldn't hesitate to encourage you to pick it up. Chances are you will probably have families and kids of your own now so this is a great way to introduce them to the kinds of games you used to play as a kid. At $14.99 it's priced just about right for the amount of adventure time held and its a great way to spend an afternoon with an old friend from the past.
