The World's Best Budgeting Program.

Praised across the Internet as hands-down the "best budgeting software", You Need A Budget (YNAB) cuts to the chase with your finances. The software focuses you on the foundation of your finances: the Budget. Experience has shown that when your budget is intact, and functioning correctly, everything else takes care of itself (the bills are paid on time, retirement contributions are made, and unnecessary debt is eliminated).

The Most Effective Budgeting Method

The software is built around Four Rules of Cash Flow. These Four Rules will help you break the paycheck to paycheck cycle, get out of debt, and save more money. Where other software packages tend to be the products of years of feature creep, YNAB offers you exactly what you need: a simple, straightforward system to manage your money.

  • Rule 1: Give every dollar a job.
  • Rule 2: Save for a rainy day.
  • Rule 3: Roll with the punches.
  • Rule 4: Learn to live on last month's income.

Remember to take advantage of YNAB's fantastic support resources: video tutorials, and free live budgeting classes for any and all interested! These are available at our website or via the Help menu in the software.

Kind of like EVE Online except there's no subscription fees and it's with real money.

I've always have a vague idea of how much money I make versus my expenditures. I've tried to make my own budgets in excel but my lack of a basic understanding of a budget made it pretty useless. I picked this up on sale for about $15 and I'm very glad I did. It gave me a crystal clear view of my finances complete with graphs and charts. I had a small amount of debt that YNAB helped me get out of, all while still saving towards my own goal of home ownership. I'm 100% unworried by living paycheck to paycheck, and soon enough I'll have an emergency fund to ensure my own peace of mind. Steam is amazing for games, but this single program improved my life significantly.

YNAB is a budgeting methodolgy that takes a pragmatic view of how you manage you money. They offer free classes on how to use the process, an excelent community, and various tools such as this software to help you stay on track. In less than a year we went from living from paycheck to paycheck to canceling our overdraft protection and paying off all our bills in full at the first of every month. Having full control of your money and knowing exactly where it is going to go is so empowering. Get this app, learn the process, and get your life back. This was the best money I've spent all year.

I picked this program up on a sale a few months ago because the full price did seem to be a little too high. I mean you can do this stuff with excel too. It will be more complicated, a lot more time consuming and ugly but it surely is doable. But if it is on sale again for 15 bucks you can buy it without thinking about it. it is easy to use and looks very nice. I love the function that you can get diagrams of the different places you spent money and on what you spend it. This makes it very easy to see where you should cut your expenses. The budgeting system is good I guess. I just seem to never be able to sit down and actually take good care of that because I spent my money on a lot of different things and my expenses change from month to month by a lot so it is kinda hard to plan my budget in advance.

So overall if it is on a sale again BUY BUY BUY if not wait for a sale.

Steam asked me to write a review for You Need a Budget 4... seeing I'm on the development team for it, you can probably assume I recommend it :D

That said, YNAB is more than the software, it's primarily about a new method of thinking about your money: http://www.youneedabudget.com/method
We offer free classes (whether or not you've bought the software) here: http://www.youneedabudget.com/support/training-and-education

There's also a 34-day trial (full-featured), so you can check it out and decide if it's for you or not. Free mobile apps for iPhone and Android let you check your budget on-the-go, and enter transactions as you make them.

If you've got any questions, feel free to ask, either in the discussion section on Steam, or on our forums over here (you'll get more - and faster - answers over here): http://forum.youneedabudget.com
