At the risk of sounding corny, using this software properly, and following YNAB's advice on budgeting can have a transformative effect on your finances. I was earning enough, but not ending up with enough, month after month, every time. YNAB's methodology of giving every dollar a job as soon as you get it (spending money IS a job!) makes a huge difference, and the software itself, after getting over a bit of a learning curve, makes keeping up with your finances vastly easier.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is just an off-brand Quicken. The difference between Quicken and YNAB is the diffrerence between watching your money closely as it disappears, and and plugging the leaks that let your money vanish, before it can. I truly can't speak positively enough about YNAB, and recommend it to absolutely anyone with an income.

This is probably one of the only reasons my husband and I have been budgeting so well lately and we've noticed we're slowly having more money to go and do fun things. It took a bit for us to use and understand it, but after fiddling with it for a bit, it was really nice and easy to use. It's also kind of nice (and sad, when you have to pay bills) to see where all your money is going.

The software itself it very easy to use but a little confusing to understand right off the bat. We had issues figuring out exactly where to enter certain information and how to set things up. However a little bit of dinking around with it and it's pretty easy to pick up. I still haven't used all the features yet, but I'm finding the basics of the program are more than enough for my needs and a lot easier then dealing with excel.

I can't recommend this software due to the platform limitations and big price tag.
It does not support future transactions, even for fix income and expenses. Even though it fits the "philosophy" of the software that is about being efficient now rather than planning ahead, this does add inconveniences.

As an alternative, I recommend Money Manager Ex that is completely free, open source, isn't platform limited and also has smartphone apps so you can add transactions on the go. It also allows you to program recurring and future transactions. The only disadvantage this has when compared to YNAB is the UI. YNAB's UI is simply great.

You cannot plan future income with this tool, and when asked about it the devs argue with users about what the users want... pretty ♥♥♥♥ty software to be honest.

Fantastic piece of software.
Helps you to allocate your money and easily compare savings goals and expenses with the actual budget on a rolling basis.
Helps identifying Areas where you spend too much and gives an insight as to how much money you can put in less liquid assets to save.
Very forgiving if you have little time to spare and convenient of you like to update everything frequently.
Haven't tried the online guides but the software itself does the job extremely well.

Highly recommended!

The king of all finance softwares. I've tried a few, but this is really great. It has applications on both IOS and Android, so you can quickly add your expenses when you spend your money, wherever you are. Easy to get an overwiev when you use the PC software. Good statistics, diagrams etc...

Cons: The design is quite cool, but the IOS version is much more better than android (i don't know why do they make the same application with two completely different design...)

Amazingly easy budgeting software to help you figure out where your money is going and re-budget accordingly. It's very forgiving when you spend too much on Steam games for the month - just take out of another category. I like this a lot better than Mint or spreadsheets that I've used in the past. Plus, it gives very informative graphs and breakdowns.

The only way I would ever budget. And it's cheaper than buying a MS Office license for Excell as well. The companion app makes it really easy to actually keep track of your expenses as you can budget them on the go.

Best software i've ever used when it comes to setting up budgets. Simple and easy to use the importing bank statments is super useful, I love how it comes with a phone version that syncs to it so you can update stuff on the fly.

This is genuinely different than other budgeting software

The key part is the design of looking forward. The program is designed to politely edit out "mistakes". Being in the red 1 month will be null by the next one, rather than making you feel like you have to perpetually catch up.

They begin you with a 7-day course. Really, it is 7 emails, but they are great. They strip complexity and tell you basic plans to keep you finances under control.

Aside from easily earning back the $15 I paid (it was on sale), it does wonders for my mental health, always knowing exactly how much money I can spend on various things.

This is by far my most used piece of software in my life, unless you count the games. YNAB is definitely one of the best budgeting tools I've ever used, and having a mobile app to help me on the go is just icing on the cake.

The only thing I wish is to be able to use more than just Dropbox to sync my budget. Not that Dropbox is bad, I just would like more options.

You need a budget, and this program will help you obtain one.

Kind of a bare bones indie resource management game, like EVE Online without spaceships, or if The Sims didn't care about the toilet so much. YNAB presents players with unique resource management challenges and a simple goal: Have more resources than everybody else. While there is no head-to-head competitive support in YNAB, the best competitive players are often showered with adoration much like the top players of competitive Starcraft in Korea. Not bad for an indie title.

But while YNAB captures the imagination with its easy-to-learn-hard-to-master concept and mechanics, it has some major flaws that can’t be ignored. In the interest of fairness, I think it’s important to list them all:

1) This game is the most egregious example of pay-to-win mechanics I have ever seen. *Significant* portions of the game are gated off for those who cannot pay. Not just DLC like new outfits for your character. We’re talking absolutely crucial content like the Education campaign or the Pay Your Rent So You Don’t Die Freezing In the Streets minigame.

2) Community members make significant content contributions – in fact they make the vast majority of all goods and services available in the game — but the monetization model for the YNAB game world fails to compensate them adequately, siphoning off most profits to support the owners of the means of production. A more equitable distribution of funds to community contributors like Valve’s Workshop system would be preferable.

3) While I found the protagonist to be generally likeable and intelligent, I found he often made inexplicably bad decisions like the infamous “Spend Your Whole Paycheck on the Steam Sale” scene. This kind of irrational self-abnegating behavior made me feel like I had no meaningful say in the story. And come on. It’s 2014. Do we really need another boring white guy headlining a title?

Overall, YNAB is a compelling indie title that makes a great deal out of very little, but the p2w mechanics and lack of next-gen graphics are a big drawback. Set aside a little money each month and pick it up during a sale.

Ok, so let me tell... in the spirit this is one more expense management software, just like Mint, just like Money. But I say that in the sense of needing to have the discipline to go through your expenses in a weekly basis at list. If you don't have the discipline for it, don't buy it! You'll end up using for about one or two months and letting it go.
After telling that, let me tell you what got my attention in YNAB. This is different from any expense management system because it is pro-active instead of reactive. In other systems, you'll enter you salary and then you'll be consuming it as you expend it during the month, until you receive a new salary. YNAB (You Need a Budget) presents a new concept in management called budgeting. Their philosophy is that once you have an income, you must allocate all of it, every penny, in the categories that you are planning to invest in that month. Even if the allocation of your money is in something like "saving for unplanned expense". Than you respect your allocation (budgeting) during the month. Every expenses that you log in the app will discount from your corresponding category budget. This is why YNAB is proactive. You don't have the sensation of money without a direction. Once you receive your money you'll have to plan where it will go.
This has been working great for me, I'm using for a couple of months now. Also, they have a mobile app that allows you to record your expenses on the go.
