Kind of a bare bones indie resource management game, like EVE Online without spaceships, or if The Sims didn't care about the toilet so much. YNAB presents players with unique resource management challenges and a simple goal: Have more resources than everybody else. While there is no head-to-head competitive support in YNAB, the best competitive players are often showered with adoration much like the top players of competitive Starcraft in Korea. Not bad for an indie title.

But while YNAB captures the imagination with its easy-to-learn-hard-to-master concept and mechanics, it has some major flaws that can’t be ignored. In the interest of fairness, I think it’s important to list them all:

1) This game is the most egregious example of pay-to-win mechanics I have ever seen. *Significant* portions of the game are gated off for those who cannot pay. Not just DLC like new outfits for your character. We’re talking absolutely crucial content like the Education campaign or the Pay Your Rent So You Don’t Die Freezing In the Streets minigame.

2) Community members make significant content contributions – in fact they make the vast majority of all goods and services available in the game — but the monetization model for the YNAB game world fails to compensate them adequately, siphoning off most profits to support the owners of the means of production. A more equitable distribution of funds to community contributors like Valve’s Workshop system would be preferable.

3) While I found the protagonist to be generally likeable and intelligent, I found he often made inexplicably bad decisions like the infamous “Spend Your Whole Paycheck on the Steam Sale” scene. This kind of irrational self-abnegating behavior made me feel like I had no meaningful say in the story. And come on. It’s 2014. Do we really need another boring white guy headlining a title?

Overall, YNAB is a compelling indie title that makes a great deal out of very little, but the p2w mechanics and lack of next-gen graphics are a big drawback. Set aside a little money each month and pick it up during a sale.

Great way to monitor your finances. Got it on summer sale 2014, worth every cent. Some usefull info you can get from two steam videos about this program, all I can add - YNAB REALLY helps. Usefull graphics, comparisons, simple way to add and monitor different accounts.

Small addition - steam can give a 75% discount on it, but very rare. So watch closely and dont miss it!

Don't let my negative review fool you...

YNAB is a great product, they put a lot of time and energy into it and do a great deal to teach people how to manage their finances.

I give it a NO vote because there is no currency conversion, as an expat that one little omission makes it unuseable for me. Yes, I can input what I was paid in the currency I get paid in, but all my bills are in another currency that is constantly changing. To add to the matter my family is in another country that pays bills and buys food in yet another country.

If you are based in one country and you don't have this problem YNAB is a great way to go...but if you are more than one currency its a PITA

If you are tired of making spreadsheets or need a simple yet effective solution to budget your money, YNAB is for you as it does it's job pretty decently. YNAB may be a bit lacking in features such as taking account of interest rates, importing bank statements and so on but the philosophy behind YNAB can be helpful to keep you in the black. It is also useful for international users as Mint does not support majority of the banks around the world.

Personally, I had found that this budgeting approach had helped me into developing "spend within your means" habit while encouraging me to save up for future such as an upcoming Steam sales or a new GPU for my PC. However, the YNAB's approach of personal finance will require you to be more proactive in your spending where you should be recording down each expense as soon as possible to make the most out of it. To make things easier, there is also a good mobile app for iOS and Android for you to keep track of your expense on the go then sync into your dropbox where you can access your data on both your PC and mobile devices.

I have been using it for almost a year and I found the software to be useful for my personal finance. I do recommend this software.

At the risk of sounding corny, using this software properly, and following YNAB's advice on budgeting can have a transformative effect on your finances. I was earning enough, but not ending up with enough, month after month, every time. YNAB's methodology of giving every dollar a job as soon as you get it (spending money IS a job!) makes a huge difference, and the software itself, after getting over a bit of a learning curve, makes keeping up with your finances vastly easier.

Don't be fooled into thinking this is just an off-brand Quicken. The difference between Quicken and YNAB is the diffrerence between watching your money closely as it disappears, and and plugging the leaks that let your money vanish, before it can. I truly can't speak positively enough about YNAB, and recommend it to absolutely anyone with an income.

YNAB is by far, the best budget software I've seen. Having said that, I think the normal price is a bit high, try to get it on a steam sale or talk with the devs, maybe they can give you a discount :)

I was lucky to get this software while it was on sale.

This program is part personal guide and your part self-discipline. You write down what you have, the guide helps you manage, but it doesn't force you to follow it. You have to promise yourself that you don't spend anymore than what you assigned to a particular budget. If you are not self-disciplined, don't get this program. But if you want a challnege and a easy way to mange your income, get this software.

You hear people joke about some of these softwares and treat them like jokes; however, this is the real deal. It's got an easy setup that you can jump right into. It provides you with a list of daily needs and possiby future ones. You simply allocate all the money you think you will spend (you can estimate) and adjust accordinly. You want to record every transaction you make whether it's a deposit or simply buying Subway. I think of it as a game, I want my budget to stay green and then rollover to the next month without worrying.

Sure, you could set this up in Excel, and if you perfer that do so. I like the convenience and mobility (mobile apps) of it. It's never to late to start budgeting.

This software has easily changed my life. I used to struggle with budgeting, and I reduced myself down to relying on pure Excel. Even with Excel, I still was not doing well with my overall budget and I kept missing my targets.

YNAB has changed all of that and I actually enjoy budgeting now because I can get a great view on my upcoming savings, and my ability to take a vacation.

I highly recommend this to anyone who needs budgeting help.

I will admit, at first, I didn't get it. I watched the videos, and I found myself struggling. I finally said 'screw it' and brought in my last month's budget/expenses/etc. After moving items around and such, it finally clicked in my head, and it's been amazing ever since.

Take note, I did get mine on a special sale (Black Friday I believe?) It is still definitely worth the $60.

Wasn't expecting to come out of this recent steam sale with a budgeting program... but this one is actually really good. I've always been good at looking at my money history and going "that was a mistake"... but I've never been good at budgeting. So far so good with this program. Excellent layout, excellent tutorials, and excellent advice so far. Would recommend!

I can't complain about this program at all. No matter what you are doing with money, it always ends up being tedious when managing a budget. This software is easy to use, streamlines the application of a flexible budget by giving you access to edit values on the fly and providing links to the info you need. What i mean is, if you are questioning a certain expense, hovering over the item in question provides info and takes you to the transaction when you click. It also collects the information and presents it to you in graphs which i thought was nice.

Been using for three months now..... AMAZING. Initially i was bumbed that you had to manual input spendings/earning but now realise exactly why the developers have done this ! Went and lashed out on a few games last month... usually i wouldnt think twice about it, money was in the bank why not. Now with this i have to take money out of a catagory and add it to the " gaming " catarogy....it really did help me realise that just becuase the money was present in the bank doesnt mean it was ' free to use it '. Brilliant !

I have actually put away some serious money and got my spending under control with this. I think these guys made a great piece of software. $60 is well worth it but if you are in dire need of a budget, this does go on sale every now and then.
