SCS Blender Tools - full truck creation pipeline!

Today is a bit of a milestone for SCS Blender Tools feature scope. With this update, the tools are finally supporting creation and export pipeline of fully fledged trucks - with equivalent power to tools used internally at SCS Software.

It took us a while to organize full truck creation, as the range of things that needed addressing is quite extensive. There is the vehicle model itself, but there is also the rest of the structure and data - the upgrades and locators ("pins"), and full animation support.

Speaking of animation, SCS Blender Tools now support animations not only for the vehicle parts, but also for any 'movers' in our game: world animated objects, animals, and people.

With the latest update, we are now about two thirds of the way towards having SCS Blender Tools support the full range of asset creation for our truck games - the one last major area remaining are the "prefabs" for elements like roads and intersections. This will become our next focus.

The vision for SCS Blender Tools is to eventually have it become a common standard out there for how Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator mods are created and shared. The hot "buzzword" or "buzz term" in the games industry these days is User Generated Content, stuff that communities of game fans can produce on their own to improve the games they love, and we would definitely like to help our already very active fan community produce higher quality, easier-to-share content for our games. We have Steam Workshop in our sights as the likely platform for wide-scale mod exchange, and for that we need rock solid asset creation and export pipeline. If we achieve 100% technical compatibility between SCS-created content and user-generated content, the holy grail would be very close cooperation with the creators - possibly even integration of the best mods into core game content or official DLCs.

Here is the full list of changes in the latest version of SCS Blender Tools:

  • Animation system implementation
  • Shader presets can now be searched by name, as list is getting longer
  • New truck sample base including all the definitions to create complete truck
  • Updated sample base with added wind powerplant and human character with animations
  • Other improvements:
    • Vertex color statistics tool
    • New versioning system
    • Unified relative paths with forward slash for all platforms
    • Import speed in case of big amount of materials
  • New shaders:
    • "eut2.dif.lum"
    • "eut2.mlaaweight"
    • "eut2.truckpaint"
    • "eut2.reflective"
    • "eut2.unlit.vcol.tex"
    • A lot of new extensions for existing shaders

Just in case you haven't seen the two previous posts about SCS Blender Tools releases:

To Get You Started

GitHub wiki

Wiki is probably the most important place for SCS Blender Tools knowledge base. There you will find the steps you need to take to begin using the tools. You can also find the download links for SCS Blender Tools. And there is even all the source code of the tools, right in the open, which could be quite interesting for the coders out there:

Forum

We have created a special forum branch, dedicated exclusively to the SCS Blender Tools. If you feel you found a bug in the tools, or want to ask something about them, or share your knowledge with the other people just getting started - this is the place to be. We will be monitoring the forums and hopefully providing some guidance, but again, we do not expect to be able to respond to everybody and to every cry for help.

ETS2 web, mod page

In case you forget all the links above you can always start with the modding section of the Euro Truck Simulator 2 web page. The links there should guide you not just to SCS Blender Tools but also to all modding guidelines paramount for successful mod creation.

E3 reveal of American Truck Simulator

We are truly humbled by public reception of American Truck Simulator. The readers of our blog have known about American Truck Simulator for a long time (the first reveal was in September 2013, that's a long time already!), but E3 and PC Gaming Show were a unique chance for us to show the game to even more people.

About 180,000 people were watching the Twitch stream when American Truck Simulator was featured in the PC Gaming Show. You can watch it here in past broadcasts.

There are many articles about the game out already and yet more are coming, we are super excited that American Truck Simulator is getting so much attention.

ATS was even one of the worldwide trends on Twitter, which shows how much attention we've got!

Here is the teaser shown during the PC Gaming Show:

As some of you have noticed in yesterday's post, the American Truck Simulator website is now live. "Coming soon" Steam store page was also published yesterday - if you like getting Steam notifications about announcements from your favorite games, please click on the Follow button, we will always publish ATS-related content both on our blog and in the Steam game hub. (Question: Do you want to see most ATS-related posts in the ETS2 Steam hub too? Tell us in comments!)

See you at Gamescom! (We plan to show way more of the game, including an interactive demo.)

My wife was attempting to park the truck: she only needed to reverse straight for about 60 feet. I watched this spectacle for 20 minutes and laughed so hard that she threatened to divorce me.

10 / Would risk 15-year marriage again.

other day i go down to downstairs, emerge from room. i say to mother, "i am going out!". she says to me, you wait there, where thinks you going? i say, not any of your business, mother! but then i confess, "i am going to buy truck". "why", says mother. "i am going to live out journey dream of being truck driver! i am going to coarse mountains of sweden and denmark i am going to drive through the lustful hills of france and the poignant mountains of britain". she says to me, after laugh so hard that coffee come through nose and onto newly cleaned carpet, "you cannot drive truck! you cannot even drive car!" she says. then she go back to the outside to tend to our crop of very legal herbal plant that is allowed to be grown legally by governor so there is no need to investigate.

after thinking carefully for many milliseconds i realise of course that she corrects. i don't drive car good at all; but one time i have attempted and i crashed. many times after this i ask but my father says i cannot use the car again. so how am i to drive trucking across the medditeraneianian mountains of poland? the solution is simple - i play instead euro truck simulating two (2). much like the want-to-be orc paladin warrior plays warcraft world, much as the army fanatic plays called to duty, much as the teenager with sinus issues who want to make millions of ad revenues plays minecraft - aspiring truck driver plays euro truck simulation.

completed with seven thousand types of truck (maybe it is not seven thousand but hey) and 300000000000 kilometers of road, you can live out experience of being truck driver. well, you maybe could not buy service stop coffee, or pornographic magazine from vendor, or emeulate furry dice that hangs from dashboard and looks tacky. but you can spontinuously break down! and you can run red light because i do not let fancy lightbulb mounted on pole tell me how to live! anyway, this game is very fun good and i recommend to everyone who ever has wanted to drive the truck.

It's like Skyrim with trucks!

Except well, not. But it's a lot of fun, and it definitely gives the feeling of a completely open world that's just ready for you to explore. Hop right in a truck and start hauling freight for others, and earn enough money to buy your own fleet of vehicles and keep more of the profits to yourself.

It's really two games in one, because in addition to the fairly robust truck driving simulation, there's a pretty great business management simulation as well where you can play some kind of Trucking Tycoon and grow a small business into a profitable little empire of trucks and drivers all across Europe.

I have to admit, Euro Truck Simulator 2 really surprised me with just how fun it is to play. It's pretty challenging to get the hang of at first, but once you do, it's a pretty enjoyable (and even relaxing) experience. The thrill of discovery — and the desire for a little more cash to pay off loans, hire drivers, buy new trucks, expand garages, and customize rigs — keeps me taking just "one more job" again and again.

It's very hard to hype this game up. You get into a truck with some cargo to deliver and hit the road accross a scaled down version of Europe. Over time you gain experience for things, like longer distances, more valuable cargo, etc. You can eventually buy your own truck(s), hire other drivers and expand your trucking empire and stuff.

But basically, it's about driving heavy, sluggish trucks. I am having difficulties putting into words why any of this is fun. Perhaps fun isn't the right word at all.

It's relaxing most of the time, satisfying, and sometimes tense.

There's something in there about small moments. The moment where you pull out of the loading dock with your frozen peas or whatnot and find the highway. The moment where the countryside changes and you cross borders. The moment where the signs change and the language is different. The moment where you know you're almost there and are about to arrive. The moment where somewhere in the middle, it rained for a while, or got really dark. Or both. The moment where you missed your exit somewhere in belgium. The moment where you discovered you could listen to actual internet radio from within your truck, from a station that matches the country you're gently passing through.

This is probably not something you'll want to sit at for multiple hours, but if you're anything like me, you'll keep coming back to it, running a delivery once in a while, because it's relaxing, and the moments are tantalizing.

Oh also, there's a multiplayer mod. It's all of this except once in a while you will pass another guy going in the opposite direction. You'll both cheerfully honk your horns in greeting, then continue on your respective ways. I guess that's also another moment.

I am actually fairly excited about all things VR and the Occulus rift for a multitude of reasons and games I'd like to experience with it, but my deepest secret about it is that I am really looking forward to playing ETS2 when the consumer version lands. Seriously. That's how much I enjoy this game.
