No Time To Explain Progress Report

3 Ιουνίου

There's a lot cooking around No Time To Explain.

  • MrFuby is working on remastering the soundtrack at 320kbps

  • This means reworking some of the songs from ground up, using slightly different instruments
  • Will update the current soundtrack and be put into new Unity remake of the game

  • Unity remake is going slow but steady - ETA this year
  • Most of standard levels ported to Unity
  • Enabled local multiplayer support
  • Going to replicate all current levels of NTTE in this build
  • Going to reimagine all scripted levels, including boss fights and the flying/running levels
  • When done, will expand content

Game will have more content, release on Steam replacing the current game; and release on Xbox One

Soundtrack out on Steam + Unity updates

1 Μαΐου

Hi everyone!

Today we released the No Time To Explain soundtrack on Steam.

Get it here

There are 17 tracks in total and they will appear in your No Time to Explain game folder.

Right now the whole dev team at tinyBuild is busy working on reimagining No Time to Explain within Unity. We demo's the first prototype at PAX East and the response was very, very good. Several people came over who beat the game in it's current state and noted how much more fun it is.

The remade version will be a reimagining of No Time To Explain. We will add more content, redo bosses, and more.

  • Controller support
  • Runs at 250fps
  • Real hardware acceleration (via Unity)
  • Reimagined bosses
  • More content!

The game will be called NO MORE TIME TO EXPLAIN and everyone who currently owns the current version will get the updated one :)

- Alex

It's a nice concept marred by horrible execution: the game runs in Flash (with all the terrible framerate issues that entails), is poorly optimized, legitimately breaks if you're playing in windowed mode, and even basic mechanics fail to work on occasion. While the writing is genuinely funny, and the gameplay fun in concept, please do not support such shoddy execution with your money.

No Time to Explain started life as a short flash game playing around with the same idea as this title has at the start. For its retail release, however, No Time has been fleshed out to a huge degree, packing a ton more highly diverse levels and a number of challenges, plus lots of completionist items to find. There’s a high degree of variety here, and while between chapters the game can sometimes feel completely different from what players were previously experiencing, it’s all held together by underpinnings of common mechanics. The variety in the levels is what makes No Time to Explain so much fun. Where No Time really excels is in humor. It’s bubbling over with craziness, whether it’s the painful screams of your future self or the themes of the various stages. All that positive outlook aside, my time with No Time was fraught with serious bugs and technical issues. The one that plagued me most was a graphical glitch concerning your aiming cursor for the laser cannon.I hit a second almost-game-breaking bug later in the game during one of the boss fights, where I couldn’t trigger a win condition. That said, No Time is fun and very funny, and often its platform design is intelligent as well as fresh and challenging. At its small price, I’d say that it’s worth the gamble that bugs won’t crop up.

I rather advise against playing this game. It certainly has some clever ideas, the variety of gun-recoil-based platform challenges could have been fantastic; but nothing in this game seems well realized. Except perhaps the bugs.

I noticed quite a few programming issues. When switching to fullscreen, the game window would get stuck in a corner of my screen. When adjusting the resolution, it occasionally activated fullscreen and otherwise did nothing. Cutscenes would have odd bars of random environments on their sides, occasionally sound effects would last several seconds after there ceased to be anything causing them, and occasionally the physics engine just completely failed to behave itself and the gun boost around which the game revolves would just completely not work (and yes it was charged.)

As well as the bugs, it seems rather poorly optimised. The lag was nigh-unbearable and severely hampered gameplay; many times moreso than on games with much more intricate graphics effects and onscreen stuff to keep track of. I would have tried to adjust settings to reduce the strain, but no such option exists. Neither does the option to stop the screen from shaking obnoxiously in two of the areas.

While it has amusing and creative boss fights in theory... they go on a bit too long... and \were probably supposed to be able to hurt you and not occasionally fail to even touch you with their attacks... and the final boss probably shouldn't have been designed so that he might never use any attack except the one you can counter to defeat him.

While the premise itself is what originally drew me to it, even that gets a little bit ruined by the end. The next to the last sequence of levels seems to be a mean spirited assault on pretentious games that, aside from containing no discernable humour and being pointlessly aggressive, constantly hammered in its implication that video games are inherently not art... not a supposition I would support.... and the entire game ends with the main character just sliding towards the camera and shouting 'Videogaaaames!' I'd call that a spoiler, but the fact that it doesn't have anything to do with anything is kind of the problem.

But aside from the many, many failures of construction and questionable design choices?
It's a decently creative platformer with different controls and a fair assortment of levels that gradually increase in difficulty. It's got a good assortment of extras. And the sillyness of it does amuse for a while... but I can't really enjoy any of those things in the mess that this game turned out to be.

+ Great art style
+ Humourous Storyline
+ Challenging levels
+ User Created Content
+ Good Overall Length

- Technical Issues on Windows 7 / 8
- No Gamepad Support
- Framerate issues on higher resolutions
- A few levels are too difficult which can hault player progress
- Bosses seem to be too easy
- No health system, so when you get "damaged" it seems pointless

Overall, a pretty good platformer, that I'd recommend to those who enjoy games of this genre.
