About This Game

Quico’s best friend, Monster, is a huge beast with razor-sharp teeth, but that doesn’t scare Quico away from playing with him. That said, Monster does have a very dangerous problem: an addiction to poisonous frogs. The minute he sees one hop by, he’ll scarf it down and fly into a violent, frog-induced rage where no one, including Quico, is safe. And yet, Quico loves his Monster and wants to save him. As Quico, players will build their friendship with Monster by solving puzzles together and adventuring through a magical, surrealist world. Players will need to learn to use Monster’s emotions, both good and bad, to their advantage if they want to complete their search for a cure and save their pal.

A boy and his monster,

PRO:
+ Handles difficult subject matter wonderfully
+ Filled with magical, empowering moments
+ Quico has no control over his chaotic home life, but his imagination lets him escape and feel empowered.
+ There's no penalty for getting caught, but you still understand and empathize with Quico's fear of Monster.
+ 10 Achievements
+ Steam Cloud

CONTRA:
- Puzzles are too easy to be rewarding

CONCLUSION:
You don't have to be a child to be enchanted by Papo & Yo. Even adults need to see the world through a child's eyes once in a while.

Papo & Yo is a 3D puzzle platformer adventure, in which you are a boy running after a girl, avoiding a monster while using it to solve puzzles, and playing with your robot toy. You use platforming to reach various stuff in the environment to change the the world around you to progress. Well, on one plane. On another plane, and this is made clear right before the game proper starts, this is a game about overcoming a drunk abusive father. Papo & Yo's story isn't the best, but it has a reasonably well put together theme and a very strong subject matter. There were a few story elements that felt somewhat jarring, taking you out of the immersion. For example, the tone of the girl changes dramatically and unexpectedly at times.

It's puzzles are on the easy side, all difficulty in this game comes from either finding the things you are to interact with or with your 3D platforming skills, sometimes together with a timed element in the puzzle. Some times, it's hard to judge the distance to items and when using the robot overshoot. The platforming control does feel well implemented and I did not encounter any situations where I had managed to block progress by going somewhere I was not supposed to and with no recovery options.

Graphically, it's a nice looking game with a very consistent style to it. Textures and effects aren't the very best, but on the other hand, that's not really to be expected from a game like this. It does some world building through the environment, but over all, it is a very linear world that does not present mane chances for exploration outside of your immediate puzzle surroundings.

Game world isn't the largest, and the game doesn't take more than maybe 4-6 hours to complete if played with no prior knowledge, but for what it provides for the price, it is a solid and well designed game.

Papo & Yo is one of those titles that proves videogames are an art form. With heavy handed themes and light puzzle solving mechanics, this game speaks volumes to the artistic expression the creator was trying to convey. You can't say too much about it without spoiling the narratives intent. Play it!

8/10 Lulas!

The story, the looks, the gameplay, everything about Papo & Yo is just amazing! I was constantly mesmerized by the beautiful scenes this game provided. An intelligent puzzle game that makes you want more. And the ending.... *sigh*... heartbreaking...

Another one of those games that goes on sale often and everyone on Reddit will tell you to go buy it for the compelling story. This feels like it was done on the unreal engine and it has some puzzles. The characters are uninteresting. I don't know how they made a monster uninteresting but they did it.

I recommend buying it in a bundle and sending the key to someone you dislike.

A really interesting and emotional puzzle game that starts out mediocre and gets more and more difficult as you get further along, although the symbolism is subtle at all and was instantly apparent to me because I know basic Spanish, however ignore the lazy symbolism and enjoy the great puzzles and ou'll love this. However, it runs fairly badly, so turn settings down or have a fantastic computer.

Pleasantly surprised. I love the way the kid's imagination is used to introduce game elements and portray a very sad story. Solid gameplay mechanics with enough variation throughout, and the music is very good as well. It's a looker too, I found the game is more beautiful than portrayed in the trailer.

If you like puzzle platformers and love a good story that is mostly told using mechanics, not words, then I can safely say you will enjoy this game.

One of the best art game out there, loving so much how the world is beautifully painted. The gameplay also solid and fun, while also make sure that the message is given through symbollisms. Finishing the game in one play (I'm just that kind of person who tend to speedplay), it inspires me and make me both shed tears and smiling. Wish I can make something as beautiful as this.

This is one of the best games ever made and one of the most mature. It is just great. Even without the story it would be a good game for the way it plays with the environment but the story and the use to gameplay to evoke specific emotions that interplay with the storyline. The whole feel of the damn thing.... it is brilliant. It is a masterpeice that shows just what games are capable of as an artistic medium.

If you liked Shadow of the Collossus for the giant building-like creatures or the general look of Brazil's favelas , you'll probably like some of the imagery in this. Ultimately though, the puzzles more or less were busy work, the monster lacked any sort of intimidation once he catches you once, the story was frustrating and the conclusion bludgeoned you with its meaning, leaving no ambiguity.

Still, it's not a long game, it's charming enough that it doesn't deserve to be completely panned and ignored. Pick it up for cheap if you can.

A fantastical tale of a boy and a monster set in a surrealistic Brazilian favela.

Papo and Yo is a 3d platformer/adventure game that features some highly unique and quirky puzzles, and though it is a little on the short side, it manges to tell a haunting story nevertheless. Dealing sensitively with some heavy topics such as alcohol abuse (which the creator suffered through in his childhood) and integrating these issues into a pseudo-fantasy environment, Papo and Yo is a truly one of a kind game that will challenge you both mentally and emotionally.

I don't think a game has ever made me cry so much. Coming from a family with substance abuse, this game hit down to the core. It isn't a difficult game, but it has a beautiful and powerful story to tell.

First of all, I have to mention that this is quite a powerful game and can have quite an impact on people if they have ever suffered with or been aroud substance misuse although it isn't primarily focused on this. The gameplay is incredible. There is lots to explore and lots of creative elements involved such as making things in order to help you through your journey. Without giving too much away, you feel very much like you are the character playing and you quite often feel what he is feeling. This did make me cry, I will be honest but I personally, love games that has such a powerful impact on me. It makes me want to play it again and again and I have already completed the game twice and itching to go back. It's easy to forget yourself and get totally immersed. If you like adventure and a taste for real life elements, give this game a try. It was suggested to me by a friend and I can't thank him enough for putting me in touch with this game. I highly recommend it and I'm very thankful to the developers for going to so much trouble and effort to make it an amazing experience for me.

Papo & Yo is a fairly short indie puzzle/platformer game that doubles as an elephantine metaphor for the game's creative director's troubled relationship with his father. The puzzles are fairly simple, but the way you interact with the world is interesting and the visuals are fantastic. Think of it as Portal, but with child abuse and alcoholism instead of cake and fat jokes. If nothing else, it is an interesting experience that doesn't overstay its welcome.
