Over dit spel

What Happened to the Humans?

Set in a post-apocalyptic world strewn with cast-off machines, Primordia tells the story of Horatio Nullbuilt, a stoic robot who values his solitude and independence. Horatio spends his days studying the Book of Man, sparring with his droid companion Crispin, and tinkering with the airship they call home — a peaceful existence that becomes threatened when a rogue robot steals the energy source that the pair needs to survive.

When Horatio and Crispin’s search for energy brings them to the dazzling city of Metropol, the simple quest to recover their stolen power core leads to unexpected discoveries about Horatio’s origins and a new understanding of the legendary humans who walked the earth before him.

I judge puzzle adventure games by a single rule:

Every puzzle in the game must be solvable within the game's own universe without requiring more than a grasp of English. No trips to Google to check bible passages or pop culture references.

And that's it. That's why Primordia's difficulty is well-earned and satisfying to figure out on your own. That's all I need to know about a point-n-click, and that's what you should need as well (but okay fine, the writing is also absolutely hilarious and full of personality).

Great music, nice artwork but silly puzzles and subpar gameplay

Updated:

It is really annoying that there are only good/bad binary ratings available on Steam, binary ratings make no sense whatsoever. I would still not 'recommend' the game but at the same time don't think it is a 'bad' game so changed the rating to 'yes'. It has amazing music and nice artwork but puzzles not on the same level, very 20 years ago-ish and not in a good sense, they feel quite tedious

One of the best Wadjet Eye games in my opinion. A proper point and click adventure with an inventory system and a witty sidekick. A beautifully dingy, dystopian world and a soundtrack to match. A few tricky puzzles in this one and a sincerely interesting, albeit rather short story.

Great game. Nice visuals, great music and an overall immersive feel. The characters are all well thought out and the storyline is engaging. The only problem? Way too short. I didn't use any walkthroughs and I got through it all in around 10 hours. The ending caught me by surprise simply because I didn't think I was even half way through which was a little disappointing. Overall still a very engaging experience, I just wanted MORE!

Harken's back to the point and click adventure days of LucasArts and Sierra that were popular through the 1990s. If you love the retro look and gameplay, you'll certainly love Primordia....a mix of dystopian, steampunk, cyberpunk, and robots.

Had some problems with getting the mouse to function (at all) on my windows 10 rig but the Dev's are really nice and encouraging and was able to find a solution. For anyone interested in order to get the game to run I simply had to alter the properties on Primordia.exe - under the compatibility tab tick the boxes 'reduced colour mode' (16bit), 'run in 640x480' and 'run as administrator'. After doing that the game runs fine.

So the game itself

An old school style point and click adventure with some very interesting charcters, settings and concepts. The dialogue is quite well written even if the jokes do on occasion fall a bit flat. Very much enjoyed my time exploring this little world and trying to figure out the puzzles.

Its only downfall in my opinion is that it seemed rather short - given the setting and the plot setup I was expecting more content but what is here is still very good.

8/10 - best of the genre I have played in a long time

Primordia is a superb game. In the far future, Man is no more and is worshiped as an ancient god that was the perfect machine that built the first robots (in the era called primodium). These manbuilt robots built more robots and they are now the only sentience that populates the post-apocalyptic world. The robots believe that Man will return once more to start a second primordium. Meanwhile, they go about "maintaining" the world and preach the gospel of man. Horatio Nullbuilt and his levitating companion Crispin Horatiobuilt are two such robots that live out in the dunes, far away from the robot city of Metropol. When a giant robot with lasers "takes" their power core, they are forced on an adventure that takes them to Metropol and uncovers everything from Horatio's past to the fate of the last humans.

The music sets the tone perfectly for this world. What struck me most was the intricacy with which this world was constructed: every little trinket of knowledge about this universe fits so seamlessly with every other tidbit. So, the writers did a fantastic job and obviously put a lot of thought into their work. The visuals, music and puzzles served to elevate that writing. If you love atmosphere and storytelling or if you loved the blackwell series or if you just enjoy wadjeteye games, this is a title that must be experienced.

I won't go into too much detail because I played this game years ago, but I recently saw it in my library and thought it deserved a review. There are few negative things to say so I'll start there.

CONS
Starting with the only downsides I can think of, it was bothersome finding the right settings so the game would scale perfectly and look sharp on an HD display, but it worked fine once that was taken care of.
Gameplay is somewhat akin to classic point and click with character displacement handled like any old 2D RPG, but it sometimes isn't clear which items are to be interacted with, or even whether it is possible. This was sometimes annoying but can be considered inherent to the game genre.
It's too short. Don't get me wrong, the length of the game is appropriate but the mood and story are so enticing by the end you'll definitely be left wanting more.

PROS
The art. I'll come out with a bit of an unpopular opinion by saying gameplay is not a good reason to buy this game. Its geatest asset is without a question the art. Not only is the style 100% distinctive from anything I've seen before, the devs actually pulled it off perfectly. While it resembles moody postapocalyptic or cyberpunk art commonly seen in high-res online, the low pixel count makes it particularly impressive. Combining intricate convoluted shapes with pixel-art is just something I didn't think was possible until playing Primordia. The dark and brown color tones used and occasional neon accents really set the atmosphere as a surrealist cyberpunk universe. I can't stress enough there is nothing else like this.
On top of the visual aspects, the soundtrack is just great. Maybe I wouldn't listen to the ambient sounds on their own but they really do a great job of accenting both the story and environment.
Last comes the story. Oh boy. Not only was I surprised at every turn by a creative plot, but the character development is the cherry on the cake. Whoever wrote the story really knows how to blend humor, mystery, and tragedy in a story that never left me bored (except when I got stuck desperately looking for some object to interact with).

I won't oversimplify by rating this game with a number, but I'll say this:
Since I was about eight years old not a single day has gone by without me reading a novel. I have watched thousands of movies, played literally hudreds of games, and amidst all the classics, the worldwide hits, the big budget productions, all the various forms of entertainment, this comes out easily as one of the favorite stories of my lifetime. If you can sit through a few tedious puzzles and don't mind spending half an hour looking for items in a pile of trash, then I recommend this game wholeheartedly. Hell, even if you hate the gameplay it's affordable enough that you can buy it just to appreciate the art and ambience.

★★★★☆

Everything is spot on here: Story, voice acting, score and graphics.
The best thing for me: the puzzles are logical so far.
I always expect this of "point&clicks" and often get very disappointed early on.

Make sure to run "winsetup.exe" in your local game content folder
to setup the graphics and other options before you run the game.

Primordia's robot driven post-apocalyptic setting is a great twist on your standard post-war stories. Even though the characters in the game are robots they retain many human properties that makes them quite relatable. To add to this, their human traits are merged with some very interesting quirks based on what purposes they were coded for. This makes almost every character you meet really interesting and memorable, and also drives a lot humor in the game. In particular, the bond between the playable character Horatio and his creation and best friend Crispin is consistently entertaining thoughtout the whole game. It's not just the setting that's great though, the writing and story in general is fantastic, and the voice acting is amazing.

The gameplay draws really well from the setting too. Scavenging for spare parts and pieceing machines together might feel pretty familiar to anyone who has played an adventure game before, but because of the setting and design of the game all of this feels really organic and fluid. It helps that there are core items in the game aren't simply used once and then thrown away, but instead you are gathering an array of tools (Your friend Crispin being one of them!) that you will keep reusing throughout the whole game. There is still the odd puzzle that had solutions I wouldn't have thought of and got me turning to a guide, but I would put this down to my own impatience rather than design faults of the game. I never really took the time to think things out completely as I was too compelled to move forward with the story!

Long story short, I would strongly recommend this game. The only negative thing I can think of is that I had a couple of very minor technical issues that were resolved easily. If you have any interest in point-and-click adventures or story-driven games in general I wouldn't hesitate to pick this one up.

This game is beauty incarnate. It uses the point-and-click adventure format masterfully, and delivers an incredible experience. Unlike some other games (Blackwell Epiphany, cough-cough xD), you always feel like you have agency, and the number of alternate endings only add to this feel. The puzzles are fair, and the world vast and interesting.

As someone who grew up on Lem's Cyberiad, for me, robots inhabiting a post-mankind world was a must buy... but what really managed to awe me was how incredibly well they were executed. No throw-away characters and no bad cliches in this game.

If you like Asimov or Lem, robots, and adventure games, get this. It's one of the top titles of the genre at the moment, surpassing even many of the big old titles by LucasArts in the golden days.
