Fairly broken.

Updates to EU4 typically invalidate previous saves... so just when you've spent 30-40 hours building an interesting country... BOOM. Even getting through a CK2 game without errors creeping into the save or updates invalidating the game is unlikely anyway, so trying to get it all the way through both games without issues is unlikely.

Another scenario is that updates simply screw up your game in weird ways. After the latest update, it renamed most of the world's countries in my save things like "Z81" and makes me re-core provinces randomly. I may finish the game, but like Berric Dondarion, each time I revive it it seems to lose a part of itself.

Yeah... don't buy this.

While it works, it's pretty barebones. It doesn't even carry over city improvements into development, for instance. Not to mention that it takes Paradox a while to properly update this after each patch. The only advantage of this is the convenience of pressing just one button to convert your game.

You're better off with the free, fan-made converters which actually fix these problems than with this overpriced, tacked-on gimmick.

Y'know Paradox, I REALLY love your games. Alot. I play them for hours. But if I want to have Europe the way it is on my CK2 save on EU4, and you give me the opportunity to do so, I expect it to work. Hopefully this getes fixed and fast. And doesn't crash and/or fail at its one job. Yes, I reccommend it, only $10.

I dont know why people are complaining, this works fine for me, the only problems is the occasional exported game not apearing in mods, other than that, works fine, plus if it doesnt apear, you canexport multiple times if you want to be sure.
maybe should already be in game, maybe, its debatable.

One year ago, when I fist got it, this DLC worked. But now after many updates it no long longer feels like working. so my best advice is to just ignor this DLC all together. Unless the f**k boys at paradox get off there lazy asses and fix the dam thing!

So you're a loyal customer of Paradox? You have both the grand strategies CKII and EUIV? How about carrying over your savegame from CKII to EUIV? Sounds awesome, doesn't it? I mean, you've payed a lot of money for those two games, considering the amount of DLCs you need to really enjoy them. So how about paying even more money for this service?

9,99 euro for a save game converter. I wish I hadn't bought this one even though it was a sale.

And yeah, every new update to either game will render the converter unusable for a while.

Worst POS ever. Purchased it after an epic CKII game. Got started on epic EU4 game. One week later EU4 patches. Since converter saves as a mod, can't effectively use in new version of EU4. Yes, you can select the load outmoded saves, launch a game and resave in the new EU4 version, but stuff is all jacked up. All of my vassals were suddenly independent and wanting to kick my azz. Everything generations and generations of my inbred family worked for in CK2 went to crap. Until they can manage the updates in a more effective manner this should either be a free user beware tool or it should not exist at all. Please, go buy 10 bucks worth of crack before you spend 10 bucks on this.

Sadly, it doesn't work all of the time. Lately, however, they have been updating this as they have been updating the game.
Buy it for cheap, it's just too unreliable to sink $10 into.

Yes! It works. Even though it made Holy Roman Empire disappear and made Aztec and Inca huge, I don't really mind. As long as converter works, it's worth it's money.

For me and several others, this converter doesn't work at all. For those who are having some luck with the converter, the world is severely messed up. Also, everyone needs to know the low priority that Paradox has for this DLC -- there's basically no support for it.

EXTREMELY disappointed. I trusted the guys at Paradox. They have awesome ideas, develop them in awesome ways, and then they can't take care of them. I payed 10€ for a DLC that doesn't work. During conversion, the hourglass just keeps spinning and spinning and if you do anything the game crashes. With some saves sometimes it manages to get the game converted, but don't expect it to be the one you want to convert. As of right now, I absolutely don't recommend this DLC. Don't even try, it's currently not worth 10€ and you'll be just dreaming to play your Empire on EU4.

Don't listen to all these idots saying it doesnt work. It works exactly as advertised and is well worth the money. What these morons writing these reviews dont seem to comprehend is that EUIV and CK2 have diffrent dev teams. Meaning when EU4 is updated the folks down at the CK2 department need to update the converter to make it work with the newest version.

Now that can take some time. Depending on how big of an update EU4 had. Most of these reviews were written when the biggest update EU4 ever had came out. Version 1.9 for Art of war was an enourmous change to EU4 and added hundreds of new provinces. Mean that the folks at CK2 had to code all that in to the converter for it to work properly which isnt a fast and easy thing to do.

Another thing is the converter converts your save game into the form of a mod for EU4. Which requires a line of code in the corisponding .MOD file that will look something like this- supported_version= "1.10" So what does this mean? It means you'll only be able to play the mod if you're running a version of EU4 that begins with 1.1. MEANING that if a new update for EU4 comes out lets say version 1.2 you wont be able to load up your converted save. Which is why we have all these idiots saying it doesnt work in the reviews. All you have to do is open up the .MOD file with notepad or something and change the line supported_version= "1.10" to supported_version= "1.2" or what ever version of EU4 you're trying to get it to work on.

Or you could just wait for CK2 to update the converter so it converts with the latest version of EU4 already set. Which doesn't take long. When El dorado came out with the new patch it didnt take very long at all for the CK2 to update the converter. Only like a couple days really. And when an EU4 hotfix came out they literally updated the converter to work on the very same day. The only time it would ever take the CK2 team a while to update the converter so it works is if an update for eu4 comes out adding new provinces which isnt very often.

So in conclusion does the Crusader Kings II: Europa Universalis IV Converter work?
Yes

Is it worth the 10$?
Yes

Why are there so many negative reviews for this?

Because people are idiots who dont understand how things work. If you look closley you will see that nearly all of them are posted from november 2014 to december 2014. This is during the time the CK2 team was working on an update for it. It took them so long because EU4 version 1.9 had came out which added a huge amount of new content and changed the game more than any other update ever has.

You cannot use your monarch points to skill up your idea's. The game will take your 400 dip and not actually skill up.

The bigger Paradox gets the less they seem to care."

Edit: October 21, 2015. I cannot say this review is relevant anymore I have not converted a game from CK2 to EU4 in years. What I can say is there is a person on the CK2 team that is dedicated to making this work better. Check out Paradox's forums for more information.

The converter is almost always broken. The devs take so long to update it that it seems to never catch up with the current version of CK2. Expect crashes, missing cultures in EU4 and many other issues.

I can't recommend paying actual money for this product. Unless you're ok with the fact that you'll have to fix it yourself for it to be usable.

Got off the fence and bought EUIV because of this DLC... Spent well over 100 hours working my way up from Pictish tribe to a merchant republic spanning all of Britannia, Iceland, bits of France, Greece, Italy, Sweeden... anyway, very excited to take my 1.4 million prestige game into the next phase only to crash the first time I tried an export and once successfully completed, to be greeted with a notice that the exported game would not function as a mod in EUIV as the current version was not supported.

So, I cannot recomend this, as much as I would love to. The idea of being able to start EUIV from the end of your previously altered version of history was very alluring to me, and I had hoped at some point to see a new version of Victoria, and export tools for that and the latest HOI, allowing for a narrative of your empire spanning 1500+ years.

Do I still look forward to spending time in EUIV? Sure, but I am extremely disappointed in this DLC at the moment. Reaching the end of around 150 hours of play time to be greeted with a runtime error and a version incompatibilty was anti-climatic to say the very least.

I am giving this a negative rating, with the hope that this DLC can reach its full potential at some point.

Unless and until you can verify this DLC is working however, stear clear.

It has happened, in the past, that this has gone weeks being completely broken. Paradox has exactly one man working on this that's supposed to update it for every major expansion that keeps coming out. Maybe one day, in the future, after EU5 is released and the last patch for EU4 is out this'll be a safe buy. For now you should give it about as attention or money as Paradox does: Close to none.

Extremely disappointed.

Nothing seems to convert "properly". Here's a list of game-breaking issues that I've seen so far:

  1. Almost everybody gets western or eastern tech. Besides poor balance, it also leads to:
  2. Your surroundings typically are Terra Incognita. Worst was in my Socotra game where my capital, still at Socotra, was completely isolated from the rest of my empire by Terra Incognita...
  3. Provinces have seemingly random autonomy values. Does not seem to be related at all to pre-conversion Crown Authority or vassal opinion.
  4. Province development does not seem to convert at all.
  5. The two above lead to garbage income in all of my converted saves. Does it seem resonable for a unified India to have a total of 16 ducats of monthly income??
  6. Most tags get generic National Ideas even when they resonably shouldn't. This is especially glaring for tags that have dynastic names in CK2 (but not in EU4).
  7. You also don't get any appropriate cultural union
  8. Ruler converts properly, but not the heir...

There are probably more glaring issues, but I've given up trying to play the converted saves. I very strongly regret buying this DLC.

EDIT: this review was written for versions CK2 2.3.5 and EU4 1.12.1
