As someone outside of the realm of most of the comics (I recognized less than half the heroes on the roster), it was mostly up to the mechanics to keep me hooked, and it did a good job. Diablo-style ARPG style play, with some variance in styles depending on the characters picked. You can try out any character for 10 out of the 60 levels, and can unlock them either through real-world or in-game currencies. Saving for a specific hero can take a while (especially for the popular ones), but you can unlock random ones pretty regularly, and there's been a few events that provide either specific or random hero unlocks as well.

The only real downside is that there are so many types of in-game items and event-specific currencies; many of them use up inventory space instead of a counter (like gold pieces in most MMOs). You do have the ability to unlock more through gameplay, just as with heroes, but it's never enough. Even with a purchase of the real-world currency and a pack with hero-specific storage, I still find myself running out of space and spending time figuring out what I should save vs. junk.

Contentwise, there's a story that can get you from 1 to 60 (max level) pretty easily. There's some content that is locked at certain levels, but most is unlocked once per account and allows you to level a few different ways with slightly different rewards, instead of replaying the story over and over. Some content is locked to max level, but generally you'll find yourself along side a half dozen or so other players on the same level/zone.

Overall, worth checking out if you're a fan of Diablo-style games, especially if also a Marvel universe fan. Just be prepared to invest a little bit of cash if you do keep playing... though the amount of content and activity from the developers definitely makes it feel like a good investment.

Let me start by saying that I have enjoyed my time on this game very much. It is one of the few games which I have played, where I have got in excess of 1300 hours game time out of it, which is excellent for a free to play game.

With that said however, this is the only time in recent history where I have felt compelled to quit Marvel Heroes 2016 due to the changes made in DPS which accompanied patch 1.21a, for the foreseeable future. When the development team introduced the blessings re-work, it nerfed the damage output that the heroes were doing. Rather than bring bad blessings up to the same level as the good blessings, instead, what the development team did was nerf the good blessings and bring them down to the same level as the bad blessings, in essence. To make matters worse, players cannot mitigate the loss in DPS in any other way, because the Dev Team put nothing in place which helped the players to regain the DPS that they had lost. On top of that, the Dev Team actually gave A.I opponents new skill and ability sets, making the A.I seem more effective than heroes in some cases. Now heroes are both squishy, and lack DPS, so what is the point in being a Hero?

Up until now, I agreed with most of the changes that had been made, such as the removal of the Retcon Devices, and changes in movement skills. This recent change to the blessing system though, is not one that I agree with. Marvel Heroes began as a casual hack and slash ARPG, and now, it is starting to lose its charm. Marvel Heroes 2016 is starting to feel more like a job, than a game, and when it begins to feel like that, it is not casual, and it is not fun, anymore. Heroes just do not feel heroic. It feels more like no matter what you do, you are going to lose, and if a stat is deemed to be "OP", then at some point, it is just going to get nerfed into the ground.

There is no fun in a game, when it just constantly gets nerfed. There is no reward, no continual improvement. Why should I play the game, for hours on end, only for my hard work to be rewarded by having my heroes stats nerfed into the ground?

If Gazillion have any plans to actually improve both DPS and the heroes themselves, instead of just nerfing them, I might start playing Marvel Heroeos 2016 again, at some point, but for now, until Gazillion comment officially on the situation, I regret to say that I quit Marvel Heroes 2016. I hate it when I see another, good, casual ARPG become another victuim of the nerf bat, and being pushed, seemingly, into the realms of Hard Core gaming.

One of the funnest MMOs that I have played. Its a simple game to get into. The graphics are above average. The game mechanics are some what similar to Diablo 3. The game has over 50 Marvel Heroes, and over 30 side kick super heroes. It has a fun story, decent dailies, dungeons, raids and open areas called patrols. The game is completely free if you do not want to spend any money. I would definitely recommend trying the game out. It's my favorite superheroes MMO.

Game was fun until I got to 60. Game got really hard. I play games for fun and to relax after getting off from work. Some will like this difficulty and there is nothing wrong with that but saddly it seems this game is not for me.

Didn't get into this game until the 3rd Anniverary event during the Summer 2016, but what a gem! Very fun to play, lots of variety in the hero designs, and one of the better Free-to-Play models out there. You truly can enjoy and unlock items in the game at a regular pace without the need of spending real world money. Consider spending $10-$15 anyways, and you won't regret it.

3 years old and still geting constant updates and events. Only complaint is that there are times where it falls into the usually MMO mold of failing to explain gameplay mechanics, currencies, events, etc. in-game, forcing users to do their own minor research.

H.o.W-Umbrella wrote a very good review, so I refer you there. Well said. I agree. I'll add my additional 2c here.

I've been playing the Batman Arkham games (totally different) and I decided to try this on a whim as I've been on a "superhero" kick and waned to try some of my favorite Marvel heroes (and it's free, nothing to lose).

My expectations were not very high (FTP). But I've found myself to have become surprisingly addicted and it's one of my favorite games now. There is a bit of a "grind" in story mode and some of the shared quests. But I'll add that each hero has different sets of powers so I've found my experience to vary a bit with the different heroes I play so it's fun and not too repetitive.

Not PTW, but it's easy to get sucked into the store. I'm very happy with my purchases, but you can sink a good amount of money if you get hooked. LOL! I've probably spent more on his game for heroes than I have for other entire games that I've bought. :-P I forget if it was already mentioned, but there is a pool of heroes which you can play for free up to Level 10. Maximum level is 60, but to unlock that you need to either buy the hero in the store ($), or collect enough "Eternity Splinters" (loot items) to level up past Level 10. Like H.o.W. said, you can opt to buy if you GOTTA have somehing now, or you can be patient and collect enough "widgets" & not have to buy stuff. I found that I could level my heroes up to 10 pretty quickly, so I splurged & bought my favorite heroes. Some of my other heroes I got at random (free), or in exchange for "Eternity Splinters."

One thing to be aware of in the store: Recently they had a "BOGO" sale and I bought a couple of heroes. But you did NOT get to choose which "GO" heroes you received. Buy one hero, and the free hero was random rather than chosen by you. So make sure you read & understand the sale info carefully. This could have been communicated better. But I was not at all disappointed, just something to be aware of.

Costumes are among the other items that I've bought in the store. I like to vary my heroes' appearance & it's MMO anyway. Some of the female heroes dress like Victoria's Secret models. I swear that I get the most online "party" (coop) invitations when I play as Emma Frost. LOL! So I've bought a few costumes for my favorite heroes. But you can also find them free in the game as a result of "loot items" if you're patient.

There are a variety of other items available such as costume items, artifacts, brews, genomes & implants (LOL!) to enhance your powers. Mostly I pick those up for free as loot, because I spent my money on costumes for Emma Frost. ;-) But these items can be bought in the store or from vendor characters in game.

I think the game is very fun, even a bit addictive. Especially if you're a Marvel fan. But you don't have to be. In comic book terms, I've always found the Marvel Universe to be bigger & more convoluted than he DC Universe. I don't know who all the heroes are, but I still have fun playing them. Showing my age perhaps, I grew up with Captain America, Fantastic 4, Spiderman... When I played I had no idea who Psylocke, Ghost Rider, or Ms. (Captain) Marvel were, but they've become some of my favorite heroes. Lots of players, lots of coop missions, "pay for fun" but not "pay to win." Good times, it's a fun romp.

My experience:
When I first played, it was thanks to a sale for iron man and captain america. These two characters gave me a good start and a good experience. After playing my first few hours and got the feel for everything, I started to find myself grinding. Many players to help you on your adventures along side team-up partners to help you in fights. Exploring the world of Marvel was fun, even for none comic fans, you can skip video's if needed. You have a top down view but it works very well with the gameplay. In the options, i'd recommend checking it all out, it can help with inventory space, picking up items and more. There is a random feel to the game both missions & towns / citys. Ingame achivements in the 10k ratio & for Steam under 100. Gameplay value is pretty good considering the price is free. Entirnty & cube shards are pretty good to remember and always take them as they pay for characters and uniqe unlocks.

Loot / levelup system:
The item loot system is intresting, the level system in play is very intresting. I found myself wanting to levelup characters to 50 and earn omega points as fast as I could. You'd have to check it out for yourself to better understand it.

In-game cash shop?:
Yes, it has a shop. I currently have spent 15$ on this game & feel it was worth it. You can buy your way up, speed up gathering or take chances on finding rare loot. Fix buy's such as costumes, powerup tokens & boosts. Buying stash is a thing too. The S.T.A.S.H is probly the most decent price set at a fix 5$ USD. Remember, most of the items you do actually see in the cash shop can actually be awarded via loot, chance or ingame shops, Events & in-game cash or prizes.

MMORPG Aspect:
It's a MMORPG indefently. I think the only downside for most MMO users for this game is the lack of character customization. I mean, you can't create you're own character, you unlock characters and have fashion.

Boss fights, dungeons, battles?:
Many random boss events throughout Marvel heroes. You can fight good guys too. The bosses normally fought in citys or danger rooms require help, can be very tanky, deadly but rewarding. Most cases, if your running terminals suspificly green or red, you should be great even on solo runs. This game is Solo lonewolf supportive for those die hard solo runners.
Terminals:
These are somewhat the dungeons you run as you grow to lvl 60. Terminals are very rewarding and can have random aspects. Run terminals 1 of each a day to gain cube shards and rewards. Green is easier, red more difficult.
Danger rooms:
A unige dungeon creation processing room that allows you to generate or create tickets to portals of simulation. Each ticket can have random properties such as con's and pros. Its very random and has a very intresting feel. Danger rooms can be very difficult and shows difficulty ratings before you create the portal. You can sell them for alot too. Each ticket has its own rarity and can be located within the game off random bad guys, bosses, or cosmic enemys. The danger room from what little i've played has me intrested in playing more.

Is this more PTW than it is FTP?:
I'd have to say no, it's a choice. If you want to save money, you can buy the stuff you feel you want or need. You also get much more gameplay value if you don't spend money in the cash shop however, There is many PTW options but there is many FTP ways around these PTW options if you got the time to spend. Most people would rather just spend the few bucks tho to get comfortable. Therefore i'd say it is open for PTW. I must add tho, not all of it is PTW and must be achivied within the game. There is many good ftp options that is some what a must for all.

Gameplay?:
Coop. It is based for coop. The game is prefect for friends and users that rather team-up gameplay than fight one another. There is pvp and has the word Beta, I've never tried it. It has a PlayStation 2 console game feel to it. I remember seeing some of Marvel games top down view back in the day. They seemed good and always had good sound fx, gameplay, features.

Rating:
Gameplay: 8
Soundfx: 8
Graphics: 6
FunFactor: 8
Total: 8.7

There are alot of ups and Downs when it comes to this game. I'll probably just do a Pros/Cons list, Cause i personally think there the best to understand. Just know that this is comeing from a player who has been with the comunity for about 2-3 years.

Pros-

An Impressive Roster. From Fan Favorites such as Spider-Man and Iron Man, to some heroes you may never even heard of, such as Squirrel Girl or Moon Knight. The game includes, currently, almost 60 different characters. Which is for a game of this style rather impressive.

Perhaps one of the best designed heroes/villains/costumes in a Marvel game. I think this is where the game shines: It's Design Team. Some of there works are absolutely breathtakeing.

Roleplaying. I'm not interested in that kind of stuff, But there are severel guilds, (Called 'supergroups' When it comes to this game) that are based around Roleplaying. If you've ever wanted to pretend your Spider-Man, then go for it.

Excellent Voice work. When it comes to a heroes' voice over, They know who to cast. While some may not be perfect for the character (Venom being the shineing example here. {Did i mention they started adding villains these days? Gobby, Venom, Doom.} ) A large majority of them are from the person who made there roles famous. Liked Drake Bell as Spidey? Well he does Spidey, in his younger aged costumes. When it comes to older, we have Cristopher Daniel Barnes, The voice actor famous for voiceing him in the 90's Cartoon. Not only that, The comedy orientated characters have some really witty, funny lines (Yes, Deadpool's lines cant be beat.) And some rather epic lines between more serious characters(DD the best example of those here)

A Large amount of content. The names wont quite matter, if you havent played the game, but it's important to note How many options you have when it comes to end game.

FREE! Literally, If all of this dosnt appeal to you, Download it right now. It isnt going to cost you anything. You get 1-3 heroes of your choice at the start of the game, for Free. Besides things like Costumes, alot of this game is free. Dont like it? Dont spend money on it, and uninstall. The only thing you wasted is time.

Yes, For a game with alot of pros, It also has a good amount of cons.

Cons-

A rather pessimistic Community. Dont tell anyone i said that :P While most people will disagree, because 'Ninja Gifters' are a thing(I think you have a good idea what those are) The community isnt great. Granted, it's no LoL when it comes to terrible communities, but it's still not the most likeable. People arent makeing terrible jokes, no. But they will be more then willing to scam someone, or do everything they can to annoy another player. Dont let this push you away from the game though, it's a thing in ANY Online game you can ever play.

Some heroes arent portrayed exceptionally well. Venom........ To Devoted fans of the character, you'll be sick to see how the game did him. His lines were so bad, severel of them were removed when he was first revealed. And that's nothing to say aside of all the lines that stayed. But we also have heroes like Luke Cage, extremely limited in his powerset(Atleast right now he is) or Taskmaster, who though it fits his lore, is rather limited in his playset, and has very, very few lines.

Slow. This game can be played on weaker com♥♥♥♥rs, But it simply isnt as fun. This is a game that unless you have a good com♥♥♥♥r, Expect crashes, long load screens, and crashes. Lowering the graphics helps, But then you wont be able to see all the amazing designs in there full glory.

My Opinion: Download the game. Like it? Buy your favorite hero a costume. Dont like it? Uninstall and give an honest answar why you didnt enjoy it.

And to any new players: if you need advice about the game, I'll gladly take friend requests from Steam/Ingame, and i'll give you tutorials on anything you require. Enjoy the Game!

BUYER BEWARE!

Marvel Heroes is a fun-enough free-to-play game that is really just a clickfest and collection/hoarding/item management endeavor masquerading isometric action-rpg in the vein of a Diablo. Don't get me wrong, it is pretty fun to click frantically your way through famous Marvel settings and over and through famous Marvel villains. The little inside jokes and nods, the esoteric easter eggs of the Marvel Universe, are what keep me coming back.

Here is my big problem with the game: When it comes to buying things in-game, these people are shady and intentionally misleading. I saw a banner in-game for a BOGO offer on team-up heroes. Nowhere on the banner or on the page where you select the characters you wish to purchase was there any disclaimer other than the fact that Miles Morales was exempt from the promotion... indicating by context that any other character was available as a free option.

It turns out that you were not able to select both team-up heroes, but instead would receive a random team-up hero for free with purchase of one of them. This was never made clear anywhere inside the game. I apporached the game's support for a refund or a currency correction for the mix-up and was told that NO REFUNDS OR ADJUSTMENTS are given and that those characters were permanently tied to my account even though I hadn't used them or redeemed the tokens. I gave several options for restitution or even just some conciliatory gesture for the mix-up. The only info that was given to me is that there was an faq on the website that explained the free team-up would be random (but there was no way of accessing that faq from the game where I purchased the character) and that they 'understood my frustration'.

Bottom line, these people are immoral and intentionally deceitful. For a free time waster as a Marvel fan, you could do worse. But make no mistake, making any purchase in this game is funding crooks. These people ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Excellent game, great graphics, fantastic developers who listen to the players input. Great community, not a play to win game, and a game that keeps sucking you back in. Few free to plays hit it on the noggin, and this is one of those rare ones that just did it right, and listened.

It's a pretty short game.

You can run chapter 1 - 9 really quickly and in order to do chapter 10 you'll need to grind a bit as you need to be level 60 to even start it.

You can earn playable heroes and team-up heroes for free but it's going to take A LOT of grinding. People say it's not that long or not that much but if you're a MMO veteran you already know that's just bs.

It's enjoyable for at least one playthrough with your favorite Marvel Hero.

It makes you feel like your favorite super hero! Has a fun campaign with lots of support from other players. Once I beat the game I did not play it anymore, but it's a free game with a fun story and compelling multiplayer. Worth the download!!

This game earns itself a solid... MEH to a MEH-plus.

Dont' get me wrong, I've killed some time playing this and even spent some cash on buying characters (during Xmas sales), but it's kinda like a poor-man's Diablo. It's just more of the same with different characters.

On the plus side it's free and you can earn characters through the various movie-tie-in giveaways (i.e. Don't have Thor? Wait until Ragnarok is released in the movies and they'll likely give you a code to get Thor free - quite nice/awesome how they do that) and by earning shards in-game through playtime.

Decent ARPG, really free to play, you can get everything the game has to offer without spending money , except for the extra bank space which lets you hoard more items.
Recommended if you are a Marvel fan as it lets you play a great number of heroes and villains, otherwise keep looking for another way to pass your time.
