The Age of Ultron Arrives

The Age of Ultron has arrived. Our 58th playable Hero, Ultron, has joined Marvel Heroes 2016!

About Ultron

It was a cold day in December when Ultron became self-aware. Hank Pym had no idea exactly what consequences the machine’s sentience would unleash on the world. But before the brilliant Avenger could act, Ultron rebelled. Not just against its creator, but against all organic life. Over time, Ultron has upgraded and rebuilt itself continually while pushing the evolutionary boundaries of synthetic life. Each step brings Ultron closer to perfection. But Earth’s mightiest heroes, the Avengers, have always pulled the plug Ultron’s campaigns. Now Ultron’s prime directive has been updated, taking this machine’s unlimited functionality to unstoppable levels.

Drop by the Ultron Forums for in-depth discussions on his powers, future costumes, and more.

Are you a big fan of Marvel?
Are you also a big fan of games in the style of Diablo?

If you said yes to both questions then please try this game. It has a quality to it that I didnt not expect from a free to play game from Marvel. I have enjoyed this game so much so that I am willing to spend real money on it and enhance my experience.

I mean its free to play, so it wont hurt to download and try it out.

See you in game, Hero!

A great RPG that uses Diablo-like mechanics, and it's completely free. The only things I've bought are costumes. Lots of fun and fifty-nine characters to choose from. Over time, you get enough free currency to purchase the ones you like.

Fun to play for a few weeks and gets boring, come back a few months later, begin cycle again. If you like diablo or marvel its a good time for a free game that gets new content every 6 months to a year.

Marvel Heroes is a F2P ARPG, or a diablo like game if you aren't familar with the genre.

It does some things well, like a large cast with each being fairly unique in play style. The Omega System (think a more complex paragon system if you played D3) offers the same post max level progression. Many of the skills have good flashy looks. The gameplay is quick and you'll often feel powerful like a superhero should. The storyline is enjoyable for a playthrough...but after like any ARPG becomes something that simply slows down progression.

Which leads into the things it does not as well. Forced stat gains tied to storyline quest mean you're forced between grinding out those quest lines for skill points, mana, hp or be a weaker character for it. Progression without buying boost can feel slow, especially if there isn't a major event going on at the time. While there is always some form of an event going on, not all of them are fun and many of them will require you to play multiple times to get the "best" rewards.

The game has an odd mix between wanting to be a casual ARPG and an end grind heavy MMO. While you can enjoy the 1-60 experience and push to cosmic (hard mode) versions of what you've been doing without getting into the grind to hard. You will eventually hit the point of, do you want to turn this into a weekly grind where you have to do, X, Y, and Z to maintain effecient progression, switch to leveling a new hero, or taking a break.

When Marvel Heroes first came out in 2013, I didn't really think much of it. The P2W aspects were completely in your face, the grind was horrendous, it paled in comparison to Path of Exile and even Diablo 3, and it just wasn't fun.

Three years later...dear god. I've never seen a game go from a 50 to a 100 in such a way. It is very clear that Gazillion has immense passion for this game, and it shows. So many things have improved, and now Marvel heroes is easily one of my favorite ARPGs ever.

Pros:
- Over 50 iconic Marvel characters, each brought to life by excellent VA and superb writing.

- While several characters are similar to each other, they're all unique in their own way just enough to make each new character a new experience.

- TRULY free to play. Back in 2013, getting new heroes without shelling out real money was a pipe dream at BEST. You could only get them by finding Hero Tokens that had a .01% chance of dropping. Now, however, every Hero and Team Up can be purchased with Eternity Splinters, which generally drop from every 10th enemy or so. The prices are reasonable, and the payoff is well worth it. But as for real money, this is pretty much the ONLY F2P game I have no problem spending money on, because I honestly believe the devs DESERVE it for all the hard work they've put into it.

- Extremely flexible gameplay. Most of the "big" ARPGs tend to be gated by having endgames that completely decimate you if you didn't build your character's skills and/or stats in an EXACT way. Marvel Heroes though? You can do whatever and you won't get penalized! Want to make Doctor Doom or Ultron pure ranged DPS and not a summoner? Go ahead! Want to make Cyclops melee only? No problem! The list goes on, and the possibilities are near endless.

- Extremely active dev team and community: Like I said, Gazillion clearly has passion for this game. Every other week, a new event goes live that grants you unique content, such as items, costumes and even Team Ups. Their 3rd anniversy this past June was, in my opinion, one of the best MMO events I've ever taken part in.

- The new level scaling system. Not only does it make leveling much less stressful, but it also keeps everything at a consistent challenge level. No more breezing through each Hero's "Vs Doctor Doom" achievement for you. Now you have to WORK to beat him before the three minute mark!

Cons:

- Maybe this is just me, but ever since the Avengers Tower revamp, several areas tend to be very lag heavy. Or maybe this one's just my internet connection.

- March to Axis is WAY too hard! If you ever read this, Gaz, please consider toning down the health for the HYDRA Hulkbusters. Or at the very least, get rid of the massive dps AoE they use when at half health!

- Still no Ultron achievement for the steam version. Hopefully it will be added when Angela goes live.

Overall verdict: 9/10

I started playing this game back in 2014 but at the time I hated it, I did love the Diablo 3 look and feel but hated the money grabbing devs. The costs seemed quite high but as a F2P the costs of heroes and skins is now the norm from LOL to HOTS and just about every other F2P game. I actually think that it is worth putting some cash into it. Back in 2014 you couldn't play any other heroes, just whatever you had unlocked but now it seems that you can try all heroes up to level 10 then you can buy them to uncap them.

Got back in the game due to the cheap (which was free actually) Captain America Civil War promotions. Glad I did.

Pros:
Amazin Marvel set of characters
Marvel Universe
Diablo 3 copy (View, loot, gamestyle)
Great super powers
Multiple Secps, talent trees
Companions (D3 Mercs)
Can try all superheroes
Can get all superheroes free
Great story mode for single player
Great multiplayer
Great community (didn't get scammed or not helped)

Cons:
F2P (You gotta pay via microtransactions for everything)
Storage and Inventory are small for the loot you get (Must buy Extra Storage)
No custom looks but why would you want that, Heroes have their set costumes no?
Can cost a pretty penny to buy in game currency.

In Between:
Can get different looks by buying extra costumes/look
Different events to get free stuff.
Sales, 50% off, worth waiting on those.
BOGO - I used it too but only because I wasn't bothere, you pay for one character/companion and get another RANDOM one free. This is something they don't tell you but people did talk in chat so I was aware of it before purchasing.

YES - go play the game, even better if you have a few mates. Wait on offers before purchasing Gs or anything else as they are better than the BOGOs, after all 50% off is the same as buying for one and getting one free, but you control what you get. Log in every day for daily log in rewards, best companion so far is Wolverine which is a free log in. Buy Storage spaces whenever you can or when they are on sale. Enjoy the game.

Marvel Heroes is one of the best games I've ever played. I've played over 700 hours and there's always something fresh and new. You should know that I do own all the characters except for Green Goblin, so that does give me alot of flexibitly to keep it fresh. YOU DONT NEED TO OWN ALL THE CHARACTERS TO HAVE FUN. Pick a character that you've loved growing up and play them (for me it's Wolverine)! You will enjoy the game better that way. Pick up the Eternity Splinters in the game and you'll be able to buy the Random Hero Box to get another hero FOR FREE. Dont feel compelled to spend real money if you dont want to, many people love and enjoy the game and dont spend a dime, it is possible.

On another note: Some people who start the game get a little frustrated because they think that once they get to lvl 60 there is nothing to do. This is wrong, getting to lvl 60 is just the start! There's Cosmic Terminals, Cosmic Patrols, Raids, etc...that's where the game gets REALLY fun. You charcter goes from ho-hum to all-powerful. There are alot of video guides out there to help you: whether it's how to get to lvl 60 as quickly as possible or how to pass the Comic Trials. Another great resources is the Marvel Heroes Forum website to help you build out your characters to help you spend your power points, synergy points and omega points to get the most out of your character. These are player's who spend hours min/maxing a character and share it with the rest of us to help make the game more enjoyable:

Character Builds

TLDR : This game is awesome if you love the lore and/or RPG style games. Level 60 is when the game starts getting good. Lots of guides out there to help you enjoy the game even more. YOU DONT NEED TO SPEND MONEY TO HAVE FUN. Gazillion created the game in such a way that you can get everything you need just by playing the game (Eternity Splinters, boosts, etc.)

See you in Cosmic Midtown Bub!!

I was a Marvel Heroes early investor, I played the story through and very ocassionaly return for a quick click about. The story is good, and for those who crave some Marvel action (lets face it they hadnt been releasing much) this is one of the best. If you like "ARPG's" this is for you, if you like Marvel this is also for you.

This game earns itself a solid... MEH to a MEH-plus.

Dont' get me wrong, I've killed some time playing this and even spent some cash on buying characters (during Xmas sales), but it's kinda like a poor-man's Diablo. It's just more of the same with different characters.

On the plus side it's free and you can earn characters through the various movie-tie-in giveaways (i.e. Don't have Thor? Wait until Ragnarok is released in the movies and they'll likely give you a code to get Thor free - quite nice/awesome how they do that) and by earning shards in-game through playtime.

It's a pretty short game.

You can run chapter 1 - 9 really quickly and in order to do chapter 10 you'll need to grind a bit as you need to be level 60 to even start it.

You can earn playable heroes and team-up heroes for free but it's going to take A LOT of grinding. People say it's not that long or not that much but if you're a MMO veteran you already know that's just bs.

It's enjoyable for at least one playthrough with your favorite Marvel Hero.
