Happy Birthday Blade Symphony.

2 years since Steam Official release,
3 years since Steam Early Access,
5 years since Kickstarter and first public Alpha.
And around 8 years since original inception.

I first saw this game myself back in 2010 on moddb. I knew then that this would be something I'd like to play. I participated in the public alpha at the beginning of 2011, I backed the game and team on Kickstarter the summer of 2011 after being completely hooked on the alpha. In August that year I joined the team, for me the rest is history.

People have come and gone, players and developers a like, our fallen Heroes will be missed for everyone of them fought gallantly. The battle is not over, it probably never will be, everyday new challengers arrive striving to wield their swords with the same steady grip as their masters, and masters before them.

PunyHuman would like to thank everyone who has given the game a fair shot, we bow before those who have dueled for countless hours trying to develop and perfect their own unique style.
A big thank you to the community contributors!
There are too many to mention all by name. People have contributed to this game in so, so many ways, the teachers, the tournament organizers, the casters, commentators, streamers, guide writers, server operators, scripters, mappers and of course the workshoppers! As others have said before its these contributions that have made the game!

I would like to highlight some special workshoppers who have created a huge number of items for the game, there are many more people, but these few mentioned here went above and beyond.

Also quick shout out to York, Elmo and everyone else out there who brought something to the table for us to feast on!

Moving on, I'd like to point out there are community tournaments and events in the pipeline, I'll try do a better job of promoting things as they come up!

There will be a patch soon'ish?!? Not much to show at the moment but here's a video of an ever improving training bot (with some cult Tom Stoffle music playing):
https://youtu.be/Dps1LSFVQGU
You can duel this bot in the AI Opponent section of the tutorial on our Nightly build right now, if you're interested!
The bot will now shuffle, roll, jump, aircancel, evade charges, punish interrupted opponents and generally try to give you a hard time. The bot also no longer stays in kneeling position when knocked down.

Lastly, yes the game is a roller coaster of highs and lows, all I can say is I think most of you will agree that there can be moments in the game that are truly magical, I've certainly enjoyed those moments many times when locked into intense duels with worthy opponents, playing on the edge and in the zone, most of you will know what I'm talking about.

Lastly here's some early concept art, some of it probably has never seen the light of day until now, enjoy:

About This Game

Prove you are the world's greatest swordsman in Blade Symphony: a slash-em-up featuring a highly detailed and in-depth sword fighting system. Face down other players in tactical swordplay, 2 versus 2 team duels, sandbox FFA, or the Control Points game mode!

Choose your fighting style

Each of the four characters have a unique fighting style suited to how you want to play.
  • Phalanx, a fencer gladiator hybrid, attacks with long range stabs and a versatile array of side attacks
  • Judgement, a knight crossed with a samurai, uses hard hitting forward attacks and wide strafing attacks
  • Ryoku, a vagrant street ninja, attacks with break dance moves and a signature reverse blade style
  • Pure, an acrobatic wushu style assassin that attacks with flips, cartwheels, extremely mobile
  • Vanguard, a quick-footed champion that uses leaning plunges to push opponents into her blade

Each character has four combat stances and over forty different attacks.

Choose Your Sword

Pair your character up with a sword type to completely change your way of approaching combat.
  • Katana, cause massive damage when parrying your opponents
  • Longsword, a well-balanced, hard hitting and adaptable sword
  • Rapier, a piercing, high damage forward thrusting weapon great for parrying
  • Scimitar, a weapon based on turning and performing as many cuts as possible
  • Jian, an agile, responsive weapon great for combos

Tactical Sword Fighting

There are no unlockable advantages in Blade Symphony. All unlockables are cosmetic. You care about proving your skill and so should your game.

Every attack has openings that are determined in real-time and efficacy is entirely up to you. Did you start an attack too early? Turn away and end the attack in a safe location. Did your opponent stupidly use a lighter stance? Go in and punish him! By switching stances mid-combo you can chain attacks into your own flurry of death.

The fighting system is open for your exploration, you can dash, jump, do an air attack, land, swing sideways with a heavy stance, parry with a light stance, and then roll away.

Every attack flows from your blade in true three dimensional space. As does your opponents! Swords collide in mid-air and you will need good timing and aim to defeat your opponent.

Advanced Character Customization

Customize your character with skins, masks, swords, and multiple attachments streamed directly from Steam Workshop.

Fight as a Team

Play in the new Control Points game mode and participate in team-based sword fighting.

This game was a very neat concept that was very poorly handled by some very immature developers. In Early Access it was very promising and these days it is very dead.

The default price is about $10. So $2 for each active player and $2 for the bot. The developers were content to alienate everyone else by being lazy, rude, or downright spiteful.

If you've got an itch, just give this game a miss and pick up one of the Jedi Knight games; you'll get a similar experience without the consequence of supporting some truly repulsive people.

Don't buy this game, it's dead. The only community left seem to be have been playing forever, and even those are few and far between, like 3-8 people on 1 server, for a few hours of the day.

Shame, used to be a great game, one of my favorites.

Apparently devs have been upsetting the community, so that may have something to do with it being dead, but I know nothing of that, I was just a casual player.

Let us all bow our heads for a moment of silence, and remember what was once a brilliant and amazing game, whose life was taken too soon and without warning.

If you have a friend to play with can find an empty server and fight there then it's going to be a fun time.
If not then have fun fighting hackers or in most cases(apparently) nobody at all.

Yeah, I wanted this to be a good game. But I was sorely dissapointed. I came late to the party for this game, and when I pulled up to the venue where the party was, there was NO ONE. Barely anyone playing, and when I did find other players I was sorely outmatched by players who had hundreds of hours in the game and knew all the ins and outs. Concepts decent. Swordplay is alright. Its just a dead game. Nothing else to be said.

Extremely complex and fast paced, which is a good thing, but I can't shake the feeling that you have to be Korean to have any chance within multiplayer.

Apparently I'm slowly getting too old for this.

I got my money's worth and my fill of the game, this review isn't about that, but I'm giving it a thumbs down for the reasons below.

I don't recommend buying this game given that its peak has passed and the developers certainly don't deserve any more money or sales with how they've treated much of their customers and 3rd party contributors.

If you read more of the reviews you'll come across the ones mentioning the 0% achievement glitch that took over 18 months for the developers to address, whereas other dev teams addressed it in the first week that it appeared. Even after the issue was fixed, they used the achievement to make a joke out of the entire issue, which was a very real one and bugged out hundreds of players profiles for over a year. This says a lot about the team's professionalism (or lack thereof) and their attitude towards paying customers.

Then there were the times the development team used their company twitter and facebook accounts to insult players they didn't like or that made critiques of some of the mechanics, trolled players on their own forums and edited posts of players they didn't like to make fun of them using forum mod powers, this list could go on for a while but I'll just include a few quotes from their team and sum it up by saying their conduct has often been very unprofessional, immature, rude, insulting, childish and offensive.

This style of conduct along with poor market research is why their company has since had to close its office due to lack of sales revenue and why all of their staff has been laid off.

It's a bit of a joke, yes. It's mocking a certain type of person who seems to only care about their achievement percentage on Steam.

Why are you still on these forums? Have you nothing else to do than post on these forums whining about the game? If you don't like it, then why stick around?

Why are you still trying to justify being little @#$%&es to the community? Let me tell you the reason why I continued to play blade symphony for so long. Once upon a time there was a server called Blade Rebellion. The end. Himura, Tetrabor, Elmo, Redmund, Sear, Echonance, and Sader; These are the people that you should be dickriding hard. These people kept the game interesting. It wasn't because of your genius game design (lol), no, it's because you handed out the free mod platter of source engine, and they ran with it. Instead of sucking them off like they deserve, you have tried to humiliate them and keep them out of the game with your antics. This is disgusting behaviour and I'm glad that the community isn't taking any more of your @#$$%&*@. Think about your actions. You're all getting coal for Christmas.

So you are going to waste more time posting complete crap on the forums and coming across as an idiot. I suppose everybody needs a hobby.

sure there is the whole 'customer is always right' thing, but at the same time, if you be a jackass in any store, they will tell you to leave, and if you're a total jerk, they will happily post a picture of you inside the store saying 'refuse entry' so others know you're a jerk. ps. Thanks for putting a massive 836 hours into blade symphony

This game WAS GOOD. Me being the fool I was played it a little then left it for other games. I have just come back to it to find it almost dead. There is only a few souls still left on the servers.

This is incredibly horrid to see as the few hours that I played the game while it was at its prime, was absolutely brilliant. The art design, graphics, sounds, combat and community were all nicely working together. Unfortunately the community obviously was not kept alive by the devs.

So don't buy this game. As much as it was great when people were on the servers and there was atleast a good few hundred people spread out between the servers. They have now all but gone away.

I will be trying to find a game to replace this but I am probably going to find it hard to find a game to try and give a similar expeirence.

Blade Symphony was promising. I bought a copy for myself, and a copy for my friend, and for a while, we had a good time. However, I cannot say I recommend the game in it's state at the moment.
The combat itself isn't bad. However, the hackers and cheaters on the servers are really annoying. They can modify game files so that they attack faster, and basically destroy you no matter what. If you're good at the game, you might not get trashed on as much, but I would still recommend watching out.
The customization--eh. Let's just say that Lego the Hobbit had better customization options than Blade Symphony does. And Lego the Hobbit had rather limited customization.
Ultimately, the game is just past it's peak. The devs take a while to respond to any problems raised by the players (as I'm sure many other reviews have already stated. Nevertheless, I shall give my two cents), and there's not much that is more frustrating to a gamer than unresponsive devs.
It's a good concept, and I liked how it was in Early Access, but the game is kinda dying now. No one's really on, the devs are unresponsive, and it just isn't fun anymore :(

I just have to do a review of this game now.
But eh, so much to talk about, where do I start?

The Game
Blade Symphony is a quite unique and "fresh" 3D Slash-em-up, using the source engine. I personally never saw a game like this, but the setting is still awesome.
You have your 4 characters; 3.5 Characters, because pure is still unfinished
Phalanx, Judgement, Ryoku and Pure. All of them have their own move set, animations and taunts even, who are all optimizable. (Im not going to discuss who is under-and overpowered, so shush)
You can equip those characters with 5 different swordtypes; Longsword, Scimitar, Rapier, Katana and Jian, which are all unlocked in the start of the game and the only thing you can unlock is eye-candy, which doesnt affect gameplay at all. Meaning, no matter how long you play the game, you wont unlock anything that will affect gameplay.
Coupled with some parkour (which is useless) and a nice fighting system (which I wont explain either) and you have a perfect game, right?

...No..not really.

The Good
-Nice Fighting System
-Responsive Controls
-Good designed free for all and Duel game modes, where FFA can be moddable, being a source game.
-A lot of workshop integration which fits this game perfectly
-Online leaderboards which keeps track of your progress

And now....the dark side of this game

The Bad
-Bad Tracers (Hit detection if you want it that way)
-Hitboxes can be just awful at times
-Lag can do a lot of weird stuff
-4. Character Pure is unfinished
-Characters have attacks which are just broken or weird
-A lot of balancing problems
-Random and unexplainable FPS drops sometimes
-The General Duel maps have FPS problems in general
-Ranking system is just not executed well
-Buggy Physics and just stuff thats not supposed to happen
- The Game Is Dead

This is where the normal review ends. Ill give this game a 5.5/10. Dont pick this up for the normal price, get it on a sale, when you really want it. Yes, I have a decent amount of playtime still racking up. But at this point I cant recommend this game.
You can end here or keep reading for some more details, details, yay!
EDIT: No, I dont hate this game. The community is great (aside from a few people), the concept is awesome and the game is overall fun. I just cant recommend it at this state. YES, I like this game.

Dead Symphony
Simply, this game is dead. Trying to get in new in this game is hard, because the most active players are the advanced and good ones. The community doesnt grow, the devs (and the balancing team) keep doing decisions and decision which are just not explainable. Most old-school players quit and/or switched to other games;

For a reason, you will notice when you go online everyday for a week: You keep meeting the same people over and over again. And the new players will just get crushed by the advanced ones (This game is multiplayer only), having no chance to get better without avoiding the good players all the time.

The game isnt even THAT bad, its just how I said. Fighting the same people over and over again just gets boring.
BUT, the community IS good. Some people of the balancing team are nice players and some devs even play the game!
The game being dead, means we meet the same people over and over again (For the third time now), but that also means that were a BETTER community. We know eachother better when theres less people.
Well, yeah, sucks that the community keeps getting smaller because more and more people are quitting.
If the devs dont do something, this game is poorly advertised aswell, the game is going to be dead soon. Dead for good.

God, that was a lot of random bu!!sh!t. But you wanted a review and here it is.
Thanks for reading! <3
