About This Game

Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Set in a universe somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Spinal Tap, it’s a fresh take on the action/driving genre, which in this case is full of imitation cover bands, demons intent on enslaving humanity and Heavy metal tunes. Featuring the talents of comedian, actor and musician, Jack Black as super roadie Eddie Riggs, as well as cameos by some of the biggest names in metal music it's a wild ride in the belly of the beast that is not to be missed by gamers and Metalheads alike.

Included as a free bonus in the PC version of Brütal Legend are both the Hammer of Infinite Fate and Tears of the Hextadon multiplayer map packs.

Story

The vivid and wildly creative world of Brütal Legend is brought to life through a spate of chrome, leather, rocker babes, epic music, fire-breathing/stud-wearing beasts, mountains made of guitar amps, and more. Follow Eddie as he embarks on a tour of epic destruction with an axe, a guitar, and his minions as he commands the power of rock in epic band battles. It’s lighter-flicking awesomeness that will melt your face clean off.

Combat

Brütal Legend’s combat is a combination of classic action slasher and real time strategy mechanics. Melee and ranged combat come from your double-sided broadaxe and demon-slaying, pyrotechnic-creating guitar. Add that 1-2 punch to a guitar solo mechanic that can summon objects, buff your teammates, or cripple your opponents, and you have a deep, gratifying core gameplay combat loop that is fun for the hardcore and accessible for the casual. On top of that, players will journey from Roadie to Rock God by commanding legions of metalheads into Brütal Victory and sending troops charging into battle.

A Streaming Open World

Brütal Legend gives you the freedom to walk, drive, or fly anywhere in a fully streaming open world whose art style is inspired by some of the most iconic and hilariously rad metal album covers ever created. Every vista in the beautiful universe of Brütal Legend looks like it was pulled from a Frank Frazetta painting.

Packed With Cameos and Voice Talent

Brütal Legend is full of cameos from gods of metal like Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and many, many others. It has a MASSIVE metal soundtrack from every era of metal music: 1970’s classic metal to 1980’s hair metal to the scarier cousins of 1990’s metal. And of course, Jack Black pays the ultimate homage to metal as Eddie the Roadie, continuing the theme from the work of his band, Tenacious D and his previous films like School of Rock and High Fidelity.

Multiplayer Mayhem

4v4 "skirmish" multiplayer marries action combat with a strategic unit-control mechanic. As the leader of one of the factions in the game, the player will direct his armies in a Battle of the Bands where the trophy is survival. Brütal Legend’s multiplayer is online-enabled, so you can conquer your friends online (broadband connection required for online play).

Music

The music in Brütal Legend is truly massive. Made up of 108 of the most rocking tracks from 75 different bands representing every sub-genre of metal, it is something to experience in and of itself.

It's fun until it goes all RTS on you halfway through it & I'm not a big fan of RTS games in general so I quit playing at that point.

I got this thinking it would be an action game, it turned out it was a rythem-based RTS with action elements.

In the deepest reaches of the world I met my true love, Ozzy Osbourne. and i drove up to him and got out of my car.
We stared lovingly at each other, awkwardly though.
After a few heartwarming moments he said

The second I heard Brocas Helm come on my car radio I knew this game would have re-playability for years. When Cradle of Filth came on I started to question this, but then I figured out how to disable the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ songs on the radio. Very odd, awkward and bulky RTS style battles, but the open-world concept is pretty kick-♥♥♥.

Well I ain't a ♥♥♥♥ing poser so I guess this gets a thumbs up.

Brutal Legend is a game with identity issues. It can't seem to decide if it wants to be an open-world action-RPG, a real-time strategy game, or a driving simulator and due to that indecision none of those elements feel fully thought out or completed. The only thing that is thoroughly fleshed out is the Heavy Metal theme. There's sections that look like they were ripped right off of a Metal album cover, units that embody (or mock) fixtures of Metal culture, and a deep mythos that melds Norse mythology (the most Metal of all known mythologies) seamlessly with all that is Metal. Of all the shots Brutal Legend takes that just miss the mark, the commentary and the love of Metal is dead on. The game has the rare quality of producing lore that is instantly humorous but on a second look, is equally as capable of being taken seriously. That quality, and the fact the gameplay is switched up so often, makes it difficult to get too annoyed with its shortcomings. The familiar faces and voices of a couple stars in the world of Metal doesn't hurt either, even if they are overused to the point of parody.

Lemmy Kilmeister is a Necromancer of Bass, with pet spiders that spin threads of steel, Ozzy Osbourn is the Guardian of Metal and your personal mechanic, and Jack Black is a lovable goofball that has a tendency to murder demons basically all the time. The only reason this game didn't get better press is it followed the Path of The Roadie. G/G, GGN.

Graphics: Despite being a game that's almost 7 years old, they still hold up and look great. The design of the characters, vehicles, weapons and the surround world all fit perfectly together. Great effects throughout.

Soundtrack: In my opinion, it's the best video game soundtrack ever. Over 100 different songs from 75 bands (according to Wikipedia) in all different subgenres of metal. It's just fantastic.

Controls: I played the game using an Xbox controller and found the controls very easy and intuitive. Whether it's fighting or commanding troops, the control scheme is easy and doesn't require a lot of unnecessary movement. The only issue I had was sometimes during battle I couldn't pull up my song list unless I hit the RT button multiple times in a row.

Gameplay: The game was not quite what I expected. I thought this was going to be an action-adventure game where you solely control Eddie and fight with him. That's partly true. I did not realize the RTS-like elements of controlling and directing your crew throughout the game. It works well and is quite enjoyable, I just didn't realize it was part of the game. I will say that at times the combat feels repetitive and the RTS parts of the game all feel identical for the most part, but never to the point that it becomes unenjoyable.

Story: The voice acting in this game is incredible. All of the actors do a fantastic job, especially Jack Black. The story is fun and has a few twists and turns that keep you guessing. I really enjoyed all of the different characters introduced throughout the game, especially the metal legends.

I would say this is an absolute must play game if you're a fan of metal, but even if you're not I would still highly recommend it. It's another fantastic example of what makes Double Fine such a great studio.

Full disclosure: I like Jack Black

In what I mentally refer to as the best soundtrack ever, we get something of an open world exploration with a tower defense game spliced in. I've only played the single player campaign, and found it enjoyable, although I will say the plot did feel like it went into fast forward in the second half.

Metal. Pure and simple. Brutal Legend is a combo of an RPG and RTS with a ton of driving in it. The games art design, locations, characters, and literally everything else are based on heavy metal music album covers and bands. The developers got several metal artists to do voicework, including Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead), Lita Ford (The Runaway's). Jack Black voices the player character, Eddie Riggs. If you're reading this review (or any of the others) I'm sure you knew about this game prior to seeing it here.

The game has an epic soundtrack, consisting of over 100 tracks from 75 bands. Great voice acting. Great story. Gameplay is a lot of fun. Driving around the map is absolutely AWESOME. It's one of Double Fine's great games that probably won't ever see a sequel. I highly recommend this to EVERYONE, but it is an absolute must buy for fans of metal music.

Gameplay-wise it's not exceptional - average, really - and I found the story mode rather short.
However, the game makes up for that in other ways.

It's a game where a hot-rod built by titans races a taxi driven by a demon in a field of exhaust pipe cacti.
It's a game where half-naked amazons ride fire-breathing sabertooth gorillas into battle against gangs of emo zombies.
It's a game where you play literally face-melting riffs against a spider composed of chromed engine parts.

It's a game where every scene and landscape looks like it belongs on the cover of a 70s or 80s heavy metal album, the story feels like it came from the song lyrics of said album, roadies are ninjas (it makes sense in the context), and there are cliffs built out of giant loudpeakers.

Yes, it's that kind of game - set in a delightfully insane world, full of tongue-in-cheek humor, quirky characters, and (how else) plenty of METAL.

It's the most f***ing metal game you'll ever play, and you'll love every minute of it.

Bring on the impalement!

I had a blast playing this game. It's raw, fun, and clever. The music is fantastic. Why wouldn't it be? It has some of the best rock songs of all time in its sound track. The voice acting is a large part of why I like this game. It has stars like Jack Black and Ozzy Osbourne in it. If those two are in the same thing you know it's gonna be rad. The game play is stellar to a point. Those of you that have played it will know what I mean. Let's just say that half way through the game they add a new play style that is the reason I put this game down for two weeks. Twice. It's not awful however it causes a huge spike in difficulty. However! This game feels rushed in the end and that's sad because I was deep into its lore and what they were throwing my way. Then it all was gone.

TLDR: Amazing all around but rushed in the end with large difficulty spikes. 8/10

In Brütal Legend, Johnny is Riggs. Riggs and Johnny both have beautiful hair and muscles.

Johnny has a lot of minions that Johnny can order around. They usually end up dying.

There's a sexy momma goth lady named, Ophelia...that turns evil...Boooo

Oh, Johnny forgot to say "spoiler alert."

Johnny thinks the music is awesome.

Johnny recommends the game, even though Johnny got tired of doing the same missions repeatedly.

Best $1 game I played ever. It's like a combination of The Lord of Rings and Metal lol. Even though it's mainly an action game, it gets to RTS(not really) at some point where you can flying around and produce/command your troops from above. The entire story-line surprises me since by a look of it I thought it might be a few hours long to get to the end, where it in fact took a longer trip with more fun adventures. For the side quests I love the racing game the most, the upgrades for all the equipment and cars are aweeeeeesome, it's also funny to see the the metal of god brings something new to say everytime when you visit. I never thought someone could come up with such crazy ideas and put all the fun stuff together to make a game full of chaos, post apocalyptic and metal. Even though it's a one-time fun to play, it totally worths the money and will bring you lots of fun.

It's late, I should go to bed. Why do I care so much to write a review on a game that no one plays anymore?
Because it was that amazing that it deserves every ounce of love I can show online.

There are games that are different and new, Games that makes the word, "unique" come to your head. Hell I wish I had a better vocabulary but thesarus.com is too far away and the melatonin is kicking in.

I'll try and stream line this.
You like metal, or rock music in general? That should be enough.
What about the game play?
Well it's like dynasty warriors met with Age of Empires and they had better art work and imagination then a college full of diehard 21st century artists.
The onle real problem with this game is the storymode is too short even though the world is MASSIVE,
Not only is it BIG but BEAUTIFUL! They really put effort into everything in this game world I explored everyinch of it becuase it was literal art. It makes the 150+ collectables fun. Yeah let me start a new line and retype that.

IT MAKES COLLECTIBLES FUN. You could literally do more productive things than collect things that just add up towards some achievement that no one will apperciate but yourself. But when you do it in Burtal Legend, you're doing it to a soundtrack that even now beats out Grand Theft Auto 5's.

It's gory with Limbs flying off and literal face melting, this was probably Jack Blacks last best thing he did...before Goosebumbs...
Anyway, for $15 you're gonna have a good time. If you like metal you're gonna have a good time,
if you like button mashing while commanding troops to flank and control the battlefield like the genius I know your are you're gonna have a good time. If you like Jack Black and Lita Ford you're gonna a have good time.
You're gonna have good time, take it from someone who doesn't write reviews very often on steam.
