About the Game

Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Set in a universe somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Spinal Tap, it’s a fresh take on the action/driving genre, which in this case is full of imitation cover bands, demons intent on enslaving humanity and Heavy metal tunes. Featuring the talents of comedian, actor and musician, Jack Black as super roadie Eddie Riggs, as well as cameos by some of the biggest names in metal music it's a wild ride in the belly of the beast that is not to be missed by gamers and Metalheads alike.

Included as a free bonus in the PC version of Brütal Legend are both the Hammer of Infinite Fate and Tears of the Hextadon multiplayer map packs.

Story

The vivid and wildly creative world of Brütal Legend is brought to life through a spate of chrome, leather, rocker babes, epic music, fire-breathing/stud-wearing beasts, mountains made of guitar amps, and more. Follow Eddie as he embarks on a tour of epic destruction with an axe, a guitar, and his minions as he commands the power of rock in epic band battles. It’s lighter-flicking awesomeness that will melt your face clean off.

Combat

Brütal Legend’s combat is a combination of classic action slasher and real time strategy mechanics. Melee and ranged combat come from your double-sided broadaxe and demon-slaying, pyrotechnic-creating guitar. Add that 1-2 punch to a guitar solo mechanic that can summon objects, buff your teammates, or cripple your opponents, and you have a deep, gratifying core gameplay combat loop that is fun for the hardcore and accessible for the casual. On top of that, players will journey from Roadie to Rock God by commanding legions of metalheads into Brütal Victory and sending troops charging into battle.

A Streaming Open World

Brütal Legend gives you the freedom to walk, drive, or fly anywhere in a fully streaming open world whose art style is inspired by some of the most iconic and hilariously rad metal album covers ever created. Every vista in the beautiful universe of Brütal Legend looks like it was pulled from a Frank Frazetta painting.

Packed With Cameos and Voice Talent

Brütal Legend is full of cameos from gods of metal like Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and many, many others. It has a MASSIVE metal soundtrack from every era of metal music: 1970’s classic metal to 1980’s hair metal to the scarier cousins of 1990’s metal. And of course, Jack Black pays the ultimate homage to metal as Eddie the Roadie, continuing the theme from the work of his band, Tenacious D and his previous films like School of Rock and High Fidelity.

Multiplayer Mayhem

4v4 "skirmish" multiplayer marries action combat with a strategic unit-control mechanic. As the leader of one of the factions in the game, the player will direct his armies in a Battle of the Bands where the trophy is survival. Brütal Legend’s multiplayer is online-enabled, so you can conquer your friends online (broadband connection required for online play).

Music

The music in Brütal Legend is truly massive. Made up of 108 of the most rocking tracks from 75 different bands representing every sub-genre of metal, it is something to experience in and of itself.

Just.....awesome. I could recommend playing it just for the soundtrack, but the game is funny, entertaining and downright epic.

Really awesome fun! The humor and music are just incredible, Jack Black really made this character ROCK!
The PC port is really well done. Performance is great, controls are comfortable, plenty of options to make it fit your PC. And at full HD with antialiasing, it looks so much better than the console version.
If you like metal music you'll love this game !

Great game, the multiplayer reminded me of kabuto giant citizen or an old game called sacrifice,

+ok story
+funny theme
+hd remake fun

-the fight animation is kinda slow not too fluid
-didn't have many content for the open world
- noone plays the multiplayer as much.

A bit about the game and developers.

Brütal Legend is an action game developed by Double Fine studios. They are the same studio that made The Cave (amazing game!), Iron Brigade, Stacking, Costume Quest, Psychonauts and couple of more others. I should mention that Brütal Legend also has couple of very good rock artists. Jack Black and Ozzy Osbourn. Honestly, I love to listen to rock-metal, but I ain't fan of Ozzy's music, and I've heard a lot of better artists than Jack, but Jack is definitely one of my favorite actors. I mean, that guy is funny! And he's an amazing voice actor in this game!

About Gameplay.
Brütal Legend is an action game in which all you do is hit, slash, run over and burn your enemies. Now, a lot of people find this type of game very amusing, but to me that's just too simple. Luckily, this game comes with another approach, that suits me a bit better! A strategy one! You are able to take the game into a semi-top down view, build your units and send them to where ever you'd like them to go. But I'll talk more about that later!

So, in Brütal Legend you play as a roadie (sorry if I misspelled it!) who died on a stage. The roadie, Eddie, gets brought back to life by the power of Ormagöden. But he got back into a Heavy Metal world, not the normal one. In that world, your job is to fight demons, and goths, using nothing but the power of true rock!

When it comes to fighting, controls are quite easy to master. Managing an army is a bit harder, but still quite easy to remember and use in combat. And remember, 10 is always better than 1. So use those units wisely! In the game there are various relics that you can find. Some give you special powers, and others lets you resurrect a "metal shop". Inside of it you find Guardian of Metal (Ozzy!), who can then upgrade your car, change your character's look, give you different weapons and so on and on. The only sad thing about the game is that Eddie can't jump. He can do a lot of things, but jumping ain't one of them.

The story of this game is very good, and very fun to follow. Jack's humor is a huge extra to the game! There's also a lot of swearing and bad language in the game which aren't really appropriate for children. But you can always just disable that and turn on that "BEEEEEEP" sound if someone swears, and that will definitely make the game A LOT more funny!

Now, let's head over to the multiplayer view of this game. I haven't tried out the online multiplayer, because I was sure I'd get my ♥♥♥ kicked instantly. So I did a test run with AI's, and it's AMAZING! You can chose one of three factions (demons, goths or metal heads) and fight the others. This is a full strategy game, where you spawn units, send them to battle and so on and on. Now, earlier i said "semi top down". I said that because you can only see where your character currently is. So if you want to see more of the "map", you have to fly (yes, FLY!) to the different location. I really had a lot of fun playing against the AI!

Graphic and Audio
Graphically speaking, the game looks pretty good. It looks like a cartoon, with the characters so realistic, that you are instantly able to recognize them. Songs are also pretty good, there's a lot of metal and rock. Though, you have to unlock them, so first 3-5 hours of gameplay are quite repeatable, and annoying..

Pros, cons and final grade.
Pros:
- Metal oriented game!
- Lots of famous people are inside of it.
- Very funny!
- Nice customization.

Cons:
- On beginning the music is repeatable.
- Map works quite weird with mouse.

Final grade: 7/10

Extra info: The game is very fun and enjoyable, but songs should have been much easier to acquire. I really recommend this game to anyone who enjoys easy games where you do nothing else except just kill creatures with two different buttons (like Darksiders, but this is better!)

An underrated game when it released on consoles back then - it stars Eddie Rigs (played by Jack Black) , a roadie feeling out of place in the future where modern rock has overtaken classic, after an accident on set, Eddie Rigs is then sent back into the "Rock Ages" as a savior of Mankind.

The game starts you out in a Cathedral, after Eddie awakens - a robed creature starts chasing you around until you pick up the legendary axe (the weapon you will be using throughout the entire game as your melee/close range) and the game introduces you to what are basic Brawler/Beat-em-Up style controls and also introduces you to your now beefed up Super-Guitar (which servers as your primary projectile weapon). You meet another of the main characters that go by the name of Ophelia, and from there on your fight your way down what appears to be a tower made of skulls until you're able to build a vehicle and escape from that area.

Visually, the game looks okay, it has an unique art style to it that I enjoyed seeing and it has really cool looking sights all around the overworld, but ultimately it's a bit repetitive. Some areas just look a little bit too "samey" for me, this is somewhat alleviated thanks to the fact that these areas are pretty much modeled after their Area Boss' style of Rock - for example, Lyonwhite (the first major boss) has a more "glam" type rock, while the later boss, and major antagonist, Doviculous has a more "satanic" design that's modeled after him, which I appreciate. The game also has a pretty colorful cast that's also pretty fun to see as you met them along. The story itself though, is fairly cliche'd, but in a good way I believe, a lot of the things that occur in the game you can pretty much see coming miles away, which is what disappointed me the most about it.

The world is pretty expansive, as far as open world games are and there's a multitude of things to do outside the game's story. You can go around destroying Stone Idols (around 100+) that serve as the main collectibles, there are songs around that give you additional buffs after you play them (your guitar can play these songs in a style very similar to that of Zelda OoT's Ocarina) and finding these Garage Doors that serve as your upgrades store (where you meet "The Rock God" Ozzy Osbourne there no doubt.). On that store, you can purchase things like upgrades for your moveset, upgrades for your vehicle, skins for your weapons and a bunch more stuff.

Outside of the overworld and the basic combat, the game also features a more RTS-like gameplay element to it. On certain major conflicts in the story, the game shifts to an RTS style of game that often serves as the conclusions to the 3 major bosses in the game aswell as the main Multiplayer component to the game - the only difference being that you yourself can drop down in your vehicle or from flight (yes your character gains wings during these events too!) and help out your troops. Sadly though, I felt this was the game's weakest parts personally, mostly because just rushing down your opponents are often the best way to break through the enemy defenses and constantly down their troops close to where they spawn and you yourself taking care of the few that make it through. You spawn more troops as you "appeal" to fans (or fan geysers) and gain more points, similar to resources in other RTS games, and are able to build and fix, or summon higher classes of troops to do a variety of things - like healers, heavy hitters, grunts, etc - so the RTS elements here are very bare bones.

Ultimately, this felt more like an afterthought to add padding to an already short game. As it stands, this is still one of my favourite games this generation for a good number of reasons, mainly for the music and Jack Black's stellar performance, even though the gameplay is very basic brawler, with added RTS elements to add padding to an already short game.

Solid B+
