About This Game

Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Set in a universe somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Spinal Tap, it’s a fresh take on the action/driving genre, which in this case is full of imitation cover bands, demons intent on enslaving humanity and Heavy metal tunes. Featuring the talents of comedian, actor and musician, Jack Black as super roadie Eddie Riggs, as well as cameos by some of the biggest names in metal music it's a wild ride in the belly of the beast that is not to be missed by gamers and Metalheads alike.

Included as a free bonus in the PC version of Brütal Legend are both the Hammer of Infinite Fate and Tears of the Hextadon multiplayer map packs.

Story

The vivid and wildly creative world of Brütal Legend is brought to life through a spate of chrome, leather, rocker babes, epic music, fire-breathing/stud-wearing beasts, mountains made of guitar amps, and more. Follow Eddie as he embarks on a tour of epic destruction with an axe, a guitar, and his minions as he commands the power of rock in epic band battles. It’s lighter-flicking awesomeness that will melt your face clean off.

Combat

Brütal Legend’s combat is a combination of classic action slasher and real time strategy mechanics. Melee and ranged combat come from your double-sided broadaxe and demon-slaying, pyrotechnic-creating guitar. Add that 1-2 punch to a guitar solo mechanic that can summon objects, buff your teammates, or cripple your opponents, and you have a deep, gratifying core gameplay combat loop that is fun for the hardcore and accessible for the casual. On top of that, players will journey from Roadie to Rock God by commanding legions of metalheads into Brütal Victory and sending troops charging into battle.

A Streaming Open World

Brütal Legend gives you the freedom to walk, drive, or fly anywhere in a fully streaming open world whose art style is inspired by some of the most iconic and hilariously rad metal album covers ever created. Every vista in the beautiful universe of Brütal Legend looks like it was pulled from a Frank Frazetta painting.

Packed With Cameos and Voice Talent

Brütal Legend is full of cameos from gods of metal like Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and many, many others. It has a MASSIVE metal soundtrack from every era of metal music: 1970’s classic metal to 1980’s hair metal to the scarier cousins of 1990’s metal. And of course, Jack Black pays the ultimate homage to metal as Eddie the Roadie, continuing the theme from the work of his band, Tenacious D and his previous films like School of Rock and High Fidelity.

Multiplayer Mayhem

4v4 "skirmish" multiplayer marries action combat with a strategic unit-control mechanic. As the leader of one of the factions in the game, the player will direct his armies in a Battle of the Bands where the trophy is survival. Brütal Legend’s multiplayer is online-enabled, so you can conquer your friends online (broadband connection required for online play).

Music

The music in Brütal Legend is truly massive. Made up of 108 of the most rocking tracks from 75 different bands representing every sub-genre of metal, it is something to experience in and of itself.

Basic Information
Title: Brütal Legend
Developer: Double Fine Productions
Publisher: Double Fine Productions
Genre: Action-Adventure with RTS elements.

General Impression
I’ve enjoyed playing Brütal Legend since it was launched originally on the consoles back in 2009. It’s safe to say that I was ecstatic over it’s well deserved release onto PCs in 2013. It is a game unique in both it’s hybrid genre and storyline. But that is to be expected from this developer, which gave us many other cult classics. From a graphical point of view, the game has aged very well and it’s still rocking (pun intended) a stellar musical score and general sound effects. It features a vast, beautifully crafted open world in which you may cause mayhem on your own, or in the multiplayer mode included. Having both Trading Cards and Achievements as well as great price tag (even outside seasonal Sales), I really had to focus hard on finding even a single con. The control scheme has been ported well enough to the PC, but a controller would still be preferred to a mouse and keyboard layout. All in all, Brütal Legend is a worthy addition to any gamer’s collection!

Strong Points
+ Excellent story and setting.
+Pleasant graphics and superb soundtrack.
+ Steam Trading Cards & Achievements.

Weak Points
- Control scheme takes some time getting used to.

Rating 10/10

Had this game on Xbox a few years ago, loved it there, loved it here. Lotta action, crazy driving, guitar solos to summon help and chords to kill baddies! You'll love it if you're a metalhead like me.

Brütal Legend is a typical Double Fine game in a sense that it picks a specific game design trope and tries to do something new with it. What we have here is a take on a GTA-style open-world game with RTS (sic!) elements. Except that the whole shindig is completely metal. I mean, just ponder the OST and the cast. Hell yeah, you are seeing it right, they did get Tim Curry, Lemmy Kilmister, Ozzy Osbourne and the rest. And you know what the ultimate move of the protagonist is? He brings down a burning zeppelin on his foes. So, to reiterate - completely metal.

Most of all, if you are a fan of Jack Black - then this is definitely a game for you. Otherwise you might not enjoy it so much, since the absurd and often childish humour of Tenacious D is not for everyone.

The game is solid. Lots of racing, lots of battling with a bit of unit micro-management, which seems like a mix of Overlord, C&C: Renegade and Giants: Citizen Kabuto mechanics. Some of the special attacks, namely the zeppelin summoning, reminded me of an old Shiny game called Armed and Dangerous. Plenty of awesome music. The plot is pretty standard, but the game does have a feel of the first Overlord game, since the lore is both familiar and original, sporting wild turns and twists on an overall common terrain. Even if you won't get the game do check out the lore. The video is called "The legends of Brütal Legend" and is epic (be forwarned that the last three legends contain major spoilers).

It shows that the game was designed with the intention of being marketed for consoles, but I didn't mind it that much, wasn't a bad port at all unlikely these new games.

Overall - the game is fun. It is well designed and is a good take on the all too familiar concept. Even though some of the elements don't work out to be stellar, in the end they still manage to deliver, as is often the case with the Double Fine games. Oh, and it is completely metal.

PS: I also feel obliged to give credit where credit is due. From a design point point of view this game has one of the best tutorials ever conceived, as in, you don't even notice that there is one. In a sense, the game essentially being a roadie-simulator, the tutorial here is the ultimate roadie. To quote the protagonist: "A good roadie stays out of the spotlight. If he's doing his job right, you don't even know he's there. Once in a while he might step on stage just to fix a problem, to set something right. But then, before you even realize he was there or what he did, he's gone".

A fun RPG built for metal heads.

The game is pretty great, you get transported to a world of metal album covers and proceed to build an army against the forces of metal (Which as it turns out are just the variants of metal) All while jamming to some good tracks and getting some humourous dialogue.

The art style of the game is rather unique, all the enemies and most of the characters seem to really pop and have a distinct feel (even the ones that are a copy paste manage to have a different enough style) The big battle mechanics feel clumsy at first but if you can get the hang of them and know the strengths and weaknesses of what you are up against you'll manage fine.

The unfortunate thing about this game is that it hasn't really aged well. Modern cards cause elements of the game to act quite buggy and no matter what you do you can't seem to make the game perform better, couple that with the game not being terribly clear on what your goal is sometimes and you can get rather frustrated really quick.

Id still recommend it but only if you happen to be a big fan of metal.

This game is ♥♥♥♥ing radical.
Clocked it back on console - A silly metal themed hack'n'slash adventure (with some RTS sections) with BIG name stars and handsdown one of the best game soundtracks of all time.

It's on steam for a song atm - just make sure to pick up the official soundtrack too ;)

This game is a mix of third person Zeldaesque adventure and isometric real-time strategy.

The strategy sections suck. Really, they're bad. But that's not why you should play this game.

You should play this game for its incredible world and atmosphere. The world is built on key elements like "noise" and "pain" and "blood". It has its own heavy-metal mythos. It drips with a kind of weird mix of humor and melancholy.

If you can just play the game as an experience, instead of fixating on the bits of the game that were never quite finished or the poor attempt to shoehorn RTS gameplay into an otherwise sound adventure game, you will have the feels.

If you are a fan of metal then you will love this game. You get to kill demons with an axe and a guitar and lead a powerful army. There is a lot of metal music in the game and a lot of references to metal bands. Jack Black, Kyle Gass, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, Ozzy osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister, and Tim Curry are voice actors in this game. Rest in peace Lemmy.
