About This Game

Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Set in a universe somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Spinal Tap, it’s a fresh take on the action/driving genre, which in this case is full of imitation cover bands, demons intent on enslaving humanity and Heavy metal tunes. Featuring the talents of comedian, actor and musician, Jack Black as super roadie Eddie Riggs, as well as cameos by some of the biggest names in metal music it's a wild ride in the belly of the beast that is not to be missed by gamers and Metalheads alike.

Included as a free bonus in the PC version of Brütal Legend are both the Hammer of Infinite Fate and Tears of the Hextadon multiplayer map packs.

Story

The vivid and wildly creative world of Brütal Legend is brought to life through a spate of chrome, leather, rocker babes, epic music, fire-breathing/stud-wearing beasts, mountains made of guitar amps, and more. Follow Eddie as he embarks on a tour of epic destruction with an axe, a guitar, and his minions as he commands the power of rock in epic band battles. It’s lighter-flicking awesomeness that will melt your face clean off.

Combat

Brütal Legend’s combat is a combination of classic action slasher and real time strategy mechanics. Melee and ranged combat come from your double-sided broadaxe and demon-slaying, pyrotechnic-creating guitar. Add that 1-2 punch to a guitar solo mechanic that can summon objects, buff your teammates, or cripple your opponents, and you have a deep, gratifying core gameplay combat loop that is fun for the hardcore and accessible for the casual. On top of that, players will journey from Roadie to Rock God by commanding legions of metalheads into Brütal Victory and sending troops charging into battle.

A Streaming Open World

Brütal Legend gives you the freedom to walk, drive, or fly anywhere in a fully streaming open world whose art style is inspired by some of the most iconic and hilariously rad metal album covers ever created. Every vista in the beautiful universe of Brütal Legend looks like it was pulled from a Frank Frazetta painting.

Packed With Cameos and Voice Talent

Brütal Legend is full of cameos from gods of metal like Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and many, many others. It has a MASSIVE metal soundtrack from every era of metal music: 1970’s classic metal to 1980’s hair metal to the scarier cousins of 1990’s metal. And of course, Jack Black pays the ultimate homage to metal as Eddie the Roadie, continuing the theme from the work of his band, Tenacious D and his previous films like School of Rock and High Fidelity.

Multiplayer Mayhem

4v4 "skirmish" multiplayer marries action combat with a strategic unit-control mechanic. As the leader of one of the factions in the game, the player will direct his armies in a Battle of the Bands where the trophy is survival. Brütal Legend’s multiplayer is online-enabled, so you can conquer your friends online (broadband connection required for online play).

Music

The music in Brütal Legend is truly massive. Made up of 108 of the most rocking tracks from 75 different bands representing every sub-genre of metal, it is something to experience in and of itself.

This game is a joke. If you like jokes, and you like metal, you will have fun playing this.

If you're a stuck up snob for video game quality like I am you'll hate the cheap graphics and clunky controls. You'll also hate that there is no HUD, so no health bar, no radar GPS mini map and no fast travel.

But, if you also have a sense of humor, you might still enjoy playing it.

Good, but not great, brutal, but not legendary.

7/10 for the laughs, the good metal soundtrack and the real artists cameos as characters.

But if there's a sequel give us a f#$%in GPS.

I got this from Humble Bundle 9 (which I bought for Bastion).

I thought this was a turn based tactics game, instead it’s an open world game with some tactical elements. I really like it, I thought the theaming was really well done. I hope to play it to the end.

I'd estimate 12hours of game play

Really, really great concept and a good story. This game is funny. And I like heavy metal quite much. Therefore, I really wanted to like this game.

BUT the controls are untolerable, especially with the car. It's not just me. Every negative review on the Store page mentions the same problem: controls.

I also find the camera distance and rotation problematic while driving the vehicles. Also, the game badly communicates the objectives or the means to achieve them. Only if you are doing something wrong for a while, a hint appears. Why not mention what and how to do something in the beginning? Why I have to keep guessing? Sometimes, I achieve victory right away, sometimes I need to try few more times. Either way I don't know what I did right or wrong. Things just happen in this game. The game has no mini-map, therefore I need to check the global map all the time. The game has no healthbar, therefore I don't know, how much health I've left. What's even worse: the game poorly communicates, whether you've received damage or gave damage. Also, it's hard to distinguish between friendly units and enemy units. For every friendly unit you have a matching enemy unit, who looks almost the same. The minor differences are noticeable only from a close distance. Also, the heavy emphasis on guitar solos doesn't make things any more convenient (you need to press a certain button combination during the solos and you are vulnerable to attacks for a few seconds before the solo is through).

Real-time strategy, racing, adventure, hack-n-slash - this game has mixed so many elements, but none of them is done properly.
The game has a good soundtrack and story and that's about it. Everything else is just chaos happening between the cutscenes. Therefore, I cannot recommend this game. The gameplay is torment.

But I do recommend to watch the cutscenes on YouTube. If you perceive Brutal Legend as a cartoon, it's great, especially, if you know a bit about the history of metal and hard rock music.

My overall rating: 6/10

Graphics is not so good, storytelling makes little sense, battle mechanics is primitive... but all that is not important because this GAME IS SO ATMOSPHERIC! It gives unique impressions,

Gods of Heavy Metal will help as you fight against demons!

Humor of the depicted world makes gameplay memorable and enjoyable anyway.

I recommend getting the game if it on sale. Even if you are not fan of its genre, it is still so much fun.

Brutal Legend is a third person action-adventure game which features a vast open world with a variety of terrain. Voice actors include Jack Black and heavy mtetal music icons.

Double-Fine is known for some great games such as Grim Fandango, Costume Quest, and a vast array of others. This game is no exception to the charm that Double Fine Productions is known for, and expands on that with a large world for you to explore - something not often found in other Double Fine projects despite their games' colorful personalities.

Jack Black stars as Eddie Riggs, a roadie for a band. You guide Eddie Rigs in a dangerous land while making a few friends and building a ride along the way. Cameos include Ozzie Osbourne, David Bowie, David Mustane and more, doing stellar voice acting for this action filled adventure.

It's hard to put the game down, the game seems to blend genres together very well from racing to beat-em-up to real time strategy, all these elements are mixed in at one time or another to break the repetition and it's successfully done so.

Pros
  • Cleverly written storyline with legnth to match
  • Jack Black's humor will brighten anyone's day
  • Great game design from mechanics to combat, everything is engaging
  • Awesome soundtrack
  • Full controller support
  • Mutiplayer battles

Cons
  • Low Difficulty, might be a tad too easy for the hardcore gamer
  • Limited graphics option
  • A full Co-Op campaign would have been perfect for this game
  • Limited to 1080p
  • Forcing 4x AA and above can/will cause game to have missing textures

Final thoughts:
I highly recommend this game to you whether you are a fan of Jack Black's movies or action gaming with attitude and flair. This has 80's hair metal written all over it and it shows. I wish we could get a sequel!

Pleasently... scratch that. Enthusiastically.... still not right. REDICULOUSLY [BLEEPIN] ESTATIC that this game is actually ridiculously [bleepin] cool. While the gameplay may eventually grow stagnent in the first act (car driving is awesome the whole time though0 this gave is really, really good. I don't really care for metal (and never really cared for Jack Black) but if you have ever listened to a Motley Crue or Def Leppard song and even remotely liked it, you will absolutely love and respect this game. This world and it's characters are absolutely amazing. The level of detail and care that went into this world to make it the coolest most metalist thing ever is amazing. But that shouldn't be a suprise since these are the guys that brought us Pshyconauts and Costume Quest. Totally worth a buy. ROCK ON.

The second I heard Brocas Helm come on my car radio I knew this game would have re-playability for years. Very odd, awkward and bulky RTS style battles, but the open-world concept is pretty kick-♥♥♥.

The gameplay isn't very good but I loved this game from the very beginning. When the game first gave me control of the character and children of the grave by black sabbath started playing I knew this game was for me. It has a pretty cool story (you have to unlock some of it by finding statues scattered across the world, oh yeah its open world did I not mention that?). There is a fair bit of comedy. And ofcourse there is the music, when you first get control of Eddie and grab an axe stuck in the ground children of the grave by black sabbath starts playing as you fight some demons, at that point I knew this game was most definately for me. Basicly if you aren't too worried about having the best combat and are more into just having a silly fun game with a lot of hard rock and metal then this game is for you. It gets a 9/10 from me (not a 10/10 due to some of the combat not being as good as I would have liked).

Graphics: Despite being a game that's almost 7 years old, they still hold up and look great. The design of the characters, vehicles, weapons and the surround world all fit perfectly together. Great effects throughout.

Soundtrack: In my opinion, it's the best video game soundtrack ever. Over 100 different songs from 75 bands (according to Wikipedia) in all different subgenres of metal. It's just fantastic.

Controls: I played the game using an Xbox controller and found the controls very easy and intuitive. Whether it's fighting or commanding troops, the control scheme is easy and doesn't require a lot of unnecessary movement. The only issue I had was sometimes during battle I couldn't pull up my song list unless I hit the RT button multiple times in a row.

Gameplay: The game was not quite what I expected. I thought this was going to be an action-adventure game where you solely control Eddie and fight with him. That's partly true. I did not realize the RTS-like elements of controlling and directing your crew throughout the game. It works well and is quite enjoyable, I just didn't realize it was part of the game. I will say that at times the combat feels repetitive and the RTS parts of the game all feel identical for the most part, but never to the point that it becomes unenjoyable.

Story: The voice acting in this game is incredible. All of the actors do a fantastic job, especially Jack Black. The story is fun and has a few twists and turns that keep you guessing. I really enjoyed all of the different characters introduced throughout the game, especially the metal legends.

I would say this is an absolute must play game if you're a fan of metal, but even if you're not I would still highly recommend it. It's another fantastic example of what makes Double Fine such a great studio.

Gameplay-wise it's not exceptional - average, really - and I found the story mode rather short.
However, the game makes up for that in other ways.

It's a game where a hot-rod built by titans races a taxi driven by a demon in a field of exhaust pipe cacti.
It's a game where half-naked amazons ride fire-breathing sabertooth gorillas into battle against gangs of emo zombies.
It's a game where you play literally face-melting riffs against a spider composed of chromed engine parts.

It's a game where every scene and landscape looks like it belongs on the cover of a 70s or 80s heavy metal album, the story feels like it came from the song lyrics of said album, roadies are ninjas (it makes sense in the context), and there are cliffs built out of giant loudpeakers.

Yes, it's that kind of game - set in a delightfully insane world, full of tongue-in-cheek humor, quirky characters, and (how else) plenty of METAL.

It's the most f***ing metal game you'll ever play, and you'll love every minute of it.

Bring on the impalement!

In Brütal Legend, Johnny is Riggs. Riggs and Johnny both have beautiful hair and muscles.

Johnny has a lot of minions that Johnny can order around. They usually end up dying.

There's a sexy momma goth lady named, Ophelia...that turns evil...Boooo

Oh, Johnny forgot to say "spoiler alert."

Johnny thinks the music is awesome.

Johnny recommends the game, even though Johnny got tired of doing the same missions repeatedly.

It's late, I should go to bed. Why do I care so much to write a review on a game that no one plays anymore?
Because it was that amazing that it deserves every ounce of love I can show online.

There are games that are different and new, Games that makes the word, "unique" come to your head. Hell I wish I had a better vocabulary but thesarus.com is too far away and the melatonin is kicking in.

I'll try and stream line this.
You like metal, or rock music in general? That should be enough.
What about the game play?
Well it's like dynasty warriors met with Age of Empires and they had better art work and imagination then a college full of diehard 21st century artists.
The onle real problem with this game is the storymode is too short even though the world is MASSIVE,
Not only is it BIG but BEAUTIFUL! They really put effort into everything in this game world I explored everyinch of it becuase it was literal art. It makes the 150+ collectables fun. Yeah let me start a new line and retype that.

IT MAKES COLLECTIBLES FUN. You could literally do more productive things than collect things that just add up towards some achievement that no one will apperciate but yourself. But when you do it in Burtal Legend, you're doing it to a soundtrack that even now beats out Grand Theft Auto 5's.

It's gory with Limbs flying off and literal face melting, this was probably Jack Blacks last best thing he did...before Goosebumbs...
Anyway, for $15 you're gonna have a good time. If you like metal you're gonna have a good time,
if you like button mashing while commanding troops to flank and control the battlefield like the genius I know your are you're gonna have a good time. If you like Jack Black and Lita Ford you're gonna a have good time.
You're gonna have good time, take it from someone who doesn't write reviews very often on steam.

"Metal noise, blood and fire, tell me what you most desire."

Well, I can tell you what I definitely want a sequel to the game.

I had originally bought this game way back in 2009 when the game was released on the console. I never regretted the purchase. The game was amusing, as it had many witty one-liners, an amazing story, an even better soundtrack than that. The game was, and still is, one of my favourite games of all time.

Would I recommend it? Hell yes.
Only reasons I wouldn't would be if you didn't like Jack Black or metal music. Regardless, it's worth a play through. Buy. It.
