About This Game

Brütal Legend is an action-adventure that marries visceral action combat with open-world freedom. Set in a universe somewhere between Lord of the Rings and Spinal Tap, it’s a fresh take on the action/driving genre, which in this case is full of imitation cover bands, demons intent on enslaving humanity and Heavy metal tunes. Featuring the talents of comedian, actor and musician, Jack Black as super roadie Eddie Riggs, as well as cameos by some of the biggest names in metal music it's a wild ride in the belly of the beast that is not to be missed by gamers and Metalheads alike.

Included as a free bonus in the PC version of Brütal Legend are both the Hammer of Infinite Fate and Tears of the Hextadon multiplayer map packs.

Story

The vivid and wildly creative world of Brütal Legend is brought to life through a spate of chrome, leather, rocker babes, epic music, fire-breathing/stud-wearing beasts, mountains made of guitar amps, and more. Follow Eddie as he embarks on a tour of epic destruction with an axe, a guitar, and his minions as he commands the power of rock in epic band battles. It’s lighter-flicking awesomeness that will melt your face clean off.

Combat

Brütal Legend’s combat is a combination of classic action slasher and real time strategy mechanics. Melee and ranged combat come from your double-sided broadaxe and demon-slaying, pyrotechnic-creating guitar. Add that 1-2 punch to a guitar solo mechanic that can summon objects, buff your teammates, or cripple your opponents, and you have a deep, gratifying core gameplay combat loop that is fun for the hardcore and accessible for the casual. On top of that, players will journey from Roadie to Rock God by commanding legions of metalheads into Brütal Victory and sending troops charging into battle.

A Streaming Open World

Brütal Legend gives you the freedom to walk, drive, or fly anywhere in a fully streaming open world whose art style is inspired by some of the most iconic and hilariously rad metal album covers ever created. Every vista in the beautiful universe of Brütal Legend looks like it was pulled from a Frank Frazetta painting.

Packed With Cameos and Voice Talent

Brütal Legend is full of cameos from gods of metal like Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, and many, many others. It has a MASSIVE metal soundtrack from every era of metal music: 1970’s classic metal to 1980’s hair metal to the scarier cousins of 1990’s metal. And of course, Jack Black pays the ultimate homage to metal as Eddie the Roadie, continuing the theme from the work of his band, Tenacious D and his previous films like School of Rock and High Fidelity.

Multiplayer Mayhem

4v4 "skirmish" multiplayer marries action combat with a strategic unit-control mechanic. As the leader of one of the factions in the game, the player will direct his armies in a Battle of the Bands where the trophy is survival. Brütal Legend’s multiplayer is online-enabled, so you can conquer your friends online (broadband connection required for online play).

Music

The music in Brütal Legend is truly massive. Made up of 108 of the most rocking tracks from 75 different bands representing every sub-genre of metal, it is something to experience in and of itself.

A great game, especiallly if you are into metal music. The gameplay is good for the most part (the RTS parts can be quite boring and repetitive sometimes), and the story is great as well (also relatable in a way). There are a decent amount of upgrades, great characters, and with the voices of Jack Black and Lemmy Kilmister as well as the music of a variety of awesome metal bands, this game is sure to make metal fans happy.

This game, in my opinion, is the symbolism of how metal survived since its creation. Metal vs New Wave, Metal vs Grunge, Metal vs Emo Rock, and always, Metal will triumph. Pretty much how Jack Black's very own Tenacious D has written the song The Metal. The story is amazingly written incorporating everything connected with Heavy Metal. Oh, and if you love puns, this one's great.

Gameplay wise, it took me quite a while to really grasp the elements especially the RTS-esque battles in which I suck by the way, so it is a very subjective matter for me. Combat is challenging and you can expect to die a couple of times. The controls are good, and the open world environments are within the concept of a Heavy Metal world.

And of course, the music and sound effects, sometimes you wouldn't want to get out of the car just so you can finish a song that is playing. Old and new metal artists are available for you to drive with, including Megadeth, Mastodon, Anthrax, etc.

This game is very enjoyable and you can expect to have a very good time head bangin',killing demons, emos, and 80's glam-style enemies, road tripping and just about anything you can do in this game. Highly recommended especially if you enjoy the metal music genre.

You must like Heavy Metal to enjoy this game. The soundtrack is pure metal, the theme and environment is all metal and gothic inspired. The story and dialogue is pretty funny with the main character voiced by and based off of Jack Black. It is an open world game of which you will spend a good amount of time in your car to get around. Side missions are a bit repetitive asking for either defend a group and kill the enemy, signal a mortar, go kill certain beasts, or race this irish fishman. The main mission incorporates multiple missions that are interesting in that it plays out as a tug of war style game where you have to convert spirit piles to your side to build up your fan count which you in turn spend on units and try to take out the enemy stage while protecting your own. I found this concept entertaining, but those who don't may not like the game all that much.

The combat is basically hack and slash, pressing different combinations of your mouse buttons or utilizing guitar solo's for power ups and abilities. There are a decent amount of upgrades and and purchases so you can customize your weapons to some extent and your looks.

Overall it is a very fun playthrough, very little issues past how annoying it can be to do the races and your car gets knocked off course by the racer or because of a tiny bump. The cutscenes are a bit derpy on visuals and voice sync but nothing bad. When the gothic scenary and enemies come in, that for me was the most enjoyable. Would love to see another version of this game, perhaps using techno or any electronic music.

Personal experience score: 9.5/10

Story: 9/10 - It was actually interesting and different considering everything revolves around the heavy metal environment. It wasn't epic but had a good amount of humor.
Sound: 11/10 - Amazing soundtrack from top artists in the heavy metal industry. Cutscenes have some strange sound though that shouldn't be there
Graphics: 7/10 - A bit outdated and basic even for 2013. The cutscenes have some derpy animation and voice out of sync.
Controls: 9/10 - Great overall, driving the car in the races is probably the only fault with the controls as it feels hard to maneuver
Game Length: 5/10 - Short unfortunately, around 20 hours if you really get into the exploration. Otherwise it will be more around 13.

Being a fan of Jack Black and heavy metal, I had very high hopes for this game. Unfortunately, this game tries to involve too many gameplay genres and executes them with varying degrees of failure. As a result it doesn't know what type of game it wants to be and ends up being not much of anything.

Basic Information
Title: Brütal Legend
Developer: Double Fine Productions
Publisher: Double Fine Productions
Genre: Action-Adventure with RTS elements.

General Impression
I’ve enjoyed playing Brütal Legend since it was launched originally on the consoles back in 2009. It’s safe to say that I was ecstatic over its well deserved release onto PCs in 2013. It is a game unique in both its hybrid genre and storyline. But that is to be expected from this developer, which gave us many other cult classics. From a graphical point of view, the game has aged very well and it’s still rocking (pun intended) a stellar musical score and general sound effects. It features a vast, beautifully crafted open world in which you may cause mayhem on your own, or in the multiplayer mode included. Having both Trading Cards and Achievements as well as great price tag (even outside seasonal Sales), I really had to focus hard on finding even a single con. The control scheme has been ported well enough to the PC, but a controller would still be preferred to a mouse and keyboard layout. All in all, Brütal Legend is a worthy addition to any gamer’s collection!

Strong Points
+ Excellent story and setting.
+ Pleasant graphics and superb soundtrack.
+ Steam Trading Cards & Achievements.

Weak Points
- Control scheme takes some time getting used to.

Knee to the Metal God and bow your head with you horns to the air be are blessed.

Story 8/10
Comedy 10/10
Replayable 8/10
Achievement 100% 4/10

Brutal Legend is a game that I'm glad to replay over on PC, I had play the game when it first came out over on the 360 and completed it and years later I still had to buy it again. The story of a roadie that is sent to a land where music is power and can be used as a weapon. Jack Black comedy shines perfect throughout the game and some of metal music's icons, and now the late Lemmy R.I.P. travel from the cliffs of amps to the the sea of tears.
Its a music lovers dream, putting on shows to battle your emeny with moshpits.

Pros:
- great story
- great voice acting
- fun creative world
- I enjoyed the soundtrack even though I'm not a heavy metal fan; the variety of songs (over 100) really gave me an appreciation for the genre

Cons:
- game play is all over the place: beat-em-up, driving, collecting, action RTS: you'll problably find something you like but if there is one of these you hate, it may make you not want to finishing the game
- the action RTS is the supposed innovation in this gameplay; it's quirky and fun, especially if you play all the different factions but at its core it is _very_ chaotic and there will be many battles where you're not sure why you won or lost. I can't help but think this would have been a better game without the action RTS element.

Brutal Legend is a game where you play as a warrior of rock voiced by Jack Black and fight the forces of evil in strange lands that can only belong on album covers.

Buy this game if you like metal, Jack Black, good storytelling, or are looking for a unique and fun experience. I seriously don't know any other games like this.

Don't buy this game if you're looking for a quality action rpg. It's pretty meh to adequate in that category, but you can do so much better with games like Dark Souls.
