CONTRAST is a puzzle/platform game where you can move between a fantastic 3D world and a mysterious shadowy universe in 2D in the blink of an eye. Delve into a dreamlike and surreal 1920s world, inspired by the performance art world of vaudeville and film noir, and cradled by a smooth and sultry jazz ambiance.

In this universe, where the boundaries between showmanship, magic, intrigue and deception are blurred, you play Dawn, the imaginary friend of a young girl named Didi. You have the power to slip from the 3D dreamscape into the parallel 2D shadow world bound to it. Cast light on a shadowy story by manipulating light sources in the 3D world to distort, enlarge or stretch the 2D shadow world. Manipulating and shifting between light and shadow will be the key elements that you will need to use to solve our world of shadow-based puzzles and help progress Didi's story!

Key Features

Contrast is a curious combination of pros and cons...

The game has an amazing soundtrack that you can feel at the title screen, even before you do anything. It will be the first thing you will notice.

The second one is it great visual and art from the 1920s. Every character and level are beautiful and the light and shadows effects are pretty nice.

Them you get to know the story and, what a good plot it has, you will enjoy it even more when you get the collectibles and find the hidden pieces of information in the levels.

The problems start when you actually have to make that jump, mixing the 3D and 2D gameplay the game brings. The controls doesn't respond very well and, I must warning you, you will fall to your death many times...

There is only one thing that annoyed me more than fall a dozen times in a row, and her name is Didi. You have to do everything she says all the time, I mean, you must take care of her but Dawn could think a little for her own, it won't hurt.

There are only one or two moments that Didi actually helps you and, after that she is your boss and you must just do what she says. That was the negative point for me.

Contrast is a pretty short game, in about 4 hours you will achieve 100% on it. After all that I still recommend it for the experience, story and the great visual and sound it has, but not at full price, buy it on a special sale.

"Shadows talks, didn't see the people walks"

May be let the shadows to represent most of the characters is not a good idea. First few minutes find it special, after that it just become dry and plain.

Good:
- Good direction of design to show a 1920s world
- Great soundtrack and vocal
- Interesting graphic for interacting real landscape, lights and shadow
- Puzzles are unique
- First half of story is attractive

Bad:
- Have good mysterious story beginning but ends up with rush and waste
- Checkpoint in later game insufficient, once fallen or exit the game needs to redo previous 15 min solved task
- Some shadow platform moving puzzle is pure "Trial and Error" experiment, which is tedious
- Only 2 real world characters (and one is mute) is too weak for the story line
- Neglect the Trial and Error time, the whole game is short and around 3 hours to complete

Verdict:
Get it on big sales only, it's fun to try but not very fun to complete it

Score: 6.5/10

Contrast is a very beautiful game, it has a unique and interesting art style, the music is top notch, and the game play is pretty unique with using light and shadow to travel. The story is pretty compelling as well, it has quite a few heavy subjects done in a way that seems genuine and not just thrown in for shock value... The game has a few somewhat open areas to play through in each Act, the game is comprised of 3 acts, each act will probably take about an hour or so. The puzzles are fairly simplistic, although that isn't really a bad thing.

The story centers around a little girl known as Didi, she has an imaginary friend named Dawn, often being left alone at night so her mother can preform Didi enlist the help of her friend Dawn to sneak around in a landscape which is set in 1920. Going along with Didi, the player (Dawn) will be introduced to numerous interesting characters shown only via their shadows.

The length of the game is rather short, I have 11 hours clocked in but over 8 of those hours were from idling cards while I slept. I played the game completely and got all the achievements in a little under 3 hours.

I'd recommend this game for the gameplay, interesting art style and compelling story. I personally found it well worth the price I paid, but if you are a stickler for games having a lot of meat and potatoes, I'd think you may be better off skipping out on this one. Fans of good games will enjoy this in spite of it's short length..

For the longest time I can remember, I have wanted this game. I recently bought the game while it was on special and have been very, very disappointed with it. Let me explain:

The game, overall, has immense potential. The plot was quite interesting (for an 70's/80's setting), but you keep waiting for that 'oomph' factor that never arrives. Instead, you're reduced to a puppet who follows the instructions of a little girl who ultimately, towards the end, becomes very annoying.

Your character learns some valuable skills, which you will probably never need to use ever again. Its just disappointing. Certain skills (like dash) you might need later on, depending on how you play really.

The controls are absolute ♥♥♥♥♥. ABSOLUTE. ♥♥♥♥♥. You think I'm joking? Go ahead and play this game and then join me in saying its ♥♥♥♥♥, because it is. I don't know about those who used a controller, but for anyone using a keyboard, I'm so sorry. I can imagine what you may have gone through because of this game.

The camera IS WORSE. Its terrible. Absolutely terrible. I can rarely turn a corner WITHOUT the camera making a 360 around me. I honestly need to pause and regather my surroundings before moving on.

THE SHIFTING. OMFG. The shifting in this game is an absolutely wonderful concept but you'll rarely need it for any good purpose. You only need to shift to move objects, solve puzzles, and very rarely, to attain items. THAT IS ALL. To make matters worse, sometimes you will get stuck as soon as you shift, unable to move at all, OR you'll suddenly be thrown out of your shift (this is often not going to be your fault).

The game is set in a very surreal map that's sloppily done. You can easily glance through walls, end up in several hundred glitches, die making a very small jump, think you have discovered a secret area where you might find an item only to discover that its a dead end that the developers left to screw with you. Haha. Screw this ♥♥♥♥.

In all faireness, Contrast is an exceptionally interesting puzzle game which I would have highly recommended, however, as it stands, I'm afraid I cannot. Like many others have mentioned, if you do find this game on sale (75 - 95 percent off) then grab it and give it a try, otherwise, you're better off saving that cash for something else.

Interesting story, lovely soundtrack and fun puzzles. Yes this game is short but still well put together. Pick it up when it's on sale!
