About This Game

CONTRAST is a puzzle/platform game where you can move between a fantastic 3D world and a mysterious shadowy universe in 2D in the blink of an eye. Delve into a dreamlike and surreal 1920s world, inspired by the performance art world of vaudeville and film noir, and cradled by a smooth and sultry jazz ambiance.

In this universe, where the boundaries between showmanship, magic, intrigue and deception are blurred, you play Dawn, the imaginary friend of a young girl named Didi. You have the power to slip from the 3D dreamscape into the parallel 2D shadow world bound to it. Cast light on a shadowy story by manipulating light sources in the 3D world to distort, enlarge or stretch the 2D shadow world. Manipulating and shifting between light and shadow will be the key elements that you will need to use to solve our world of shadow-based puzzles and help progress Didi's story!

Key Features

  • Create unique shadow landscapes by manipulating light sources and real world objects, and use this ability to solve mind-bending puzzles

Contrast starts on a very clever gaming mechanism but ends up falling short. The story is dull, the characters are botched, the game-play is repetitive and the controls are clunky. The whole game can be 100% completed in one seating of 4 hours.
That is a pity because the premise of this game, the atmosphere, the era and the soundtrack are top notch. All the ingredients were there to make this game mythical. However, the poor execution ends up ruining the show and the whole thing feels sour in the end.

Contrast is a unique 3D platformer (2D when you're in the shadows). I played it some time back so I cannot write out an exhaustive review, but suffice to say the setting, story, soundtrack and voice-acting were all decent here. The artstyle especially was unique though. The game mechanics are interesting, but they were never fully fleshed out. The puzzles are mostly of moderate difficulty, but one or two of the later ones might frustrate you for a while.

The game is a bit rough around the edges with texture pop-ins, some wonky animations and some other minor control bugs. The ending felt a bit rushed for the story. Length wise, it is pretty short at 3 hours or so, and you should be able to 100% the game in around 4 hours.

If you go in with your expectations in check and manage to get this game on a discount, I'd be pretty certain you'll come away liking it. At least that's how I saw it in the end - a unique game that did not overstay its welcome.

Contrast.. is a rather intresting little gem, it takes less than 6 hours to complete fully - but the ride is so enjoyable and the mood is hit perfectly that I really have no regrets. I will however touch on a few issues; the controls - the whole shifting into shadows and out again sometimes bugs out, tossing you out of shadows for no actual good reason. In addition, some puzzles require you to stand in a specific place before it'll show you the progress, having spent about 30 minutes trying to make an impossible jump I face palmed fiercely when I found out by accident that I simply needed to walk onto the shadow of a cigarette.

However, those two issues aside? The game is worth the money, I wouldn't say you're getting spoiled rotten with content, but you will get an appealing little tale, with decent graphics, amazing music score, and a fresh take on the platforming genre.

This game had a great concept and story, but the horrible gameplay ruins the experience. The "interaction" is buggy as hell, and the screwy third-person view isn't particularly helpful either. My field of view actually clipped outside the wall in the wall at the start of the game because the room is way too small for such a zoomed-out camera.
Also, the game has random lag spikes at the worst possible times, and the graphics settings are extremely lacking in customizability. I could not get past a certain point in the game because it lagged literally EVERY ♥♥♥♥ING TIME that I tried to make a certain jump, and so I couldn't switch back to shadow mode in time, and fell to my death. Repeatedly, until I eventually gave up.
Also, the girl's dialouge is really really annoying and adds almost nothing to the story, especially when she keeps telling you the same lines over and over again. Honestly, this game was vastly diappointing and I very much regret buying it.
The really sad thing, though, is not my wasted money but wasted potential. This game could have been SO much better, but as I've said, it wasn't very good at all.

This game is a HUGE disipointment. Watching the trailer and some gameplay made this game look amazing. An incredible looking world that brings the 20's jazz/circus noir look into a hibrid dream/imaginary world, a great gaming concept with a lot of potential for fun, compelling and complex puzzle solving and an interesting plot with the potential for plenty of depth, growth and heart breaking/warming scenes was not nearly enough to save this buggy overly simplistic and mindnumbingly dull game.

This is a beautifully done and very underrated game. In my opinion I think it should be much more popular than it is. The gameplay is gorgeous and very unique and the story is touching. I wish the game was longer because it is so good but definitely worth it and right now (at this moment it is on sale) it is a complete steal!

I really wanted to like this game, had it on my Wishlist for several weeks before release, was so happy when I finally installed it, and have attempted two separate playthroughs of it. But it just fell flat. After several game breaking glitches that required a complete restart and struggling with glitchy game mechanics, I gave up. I was engaged by the story and MAYBE finding out what happens is worth it to some, but not me.

A fantastic game with unique art style and successful soundtracks. The old 20's Jazz melodies just completely suit the game from the intro to end. Also the amazing dubs professional as films. Switching between shadows and reality is a quite new idea of game. It runs well even with fascinating lighting effects and scenes. The puzzles need to be considered for a while but won't take you too long. And it's not hard to get all the achievements.
Highly recommended the game since it's still on a discount now. If you want to order it, don't forget the soundtracks, you maybe regret of without it.

Contrast is an exceptionally good game, if you enjoy what it does.

The sterotypical 12-year-old Call Of Duty player, or the stereotypical Madden-fanatic dudebro, are not going to like this game, nor are they going to understand what makes it so cool, or so fun to play.

But if you're the kind of gamer who can appreciate beautiful visuals, innovative gameplay, and a story-driven experience, Contrast is definitely worth a look.

First off, the artwork in this game is gorgeous. It's a stylized, animated style which summons up a surreal Jazz Age Paris (?). It's affecting and evocative and surprisingly detailed.

The game's shadow-shifting mechanic is novel, and the puzzles I've encountered thus far are unusual, but not frustratingly so. The story's the thing here, in the end, and the traversal puzzles and the jumping are just what you do while moving through -- and moviing forward -- the plot.

Ultimately, this is a game which tells a story. It's told mostly through cutscenes, but the voice acting is generally superior, and the writing is solid, which keeps it all interesting. As has been said, there's a vaguely Bioshock feeling to the storytelling -- there's a mystery unfolding, and a faint air of tragedy or melancholy surrounding events, as if something sad is about to occur, unless it can be outrun or outthought.

You play as the shadow-shifting "imaginary friend" of a little girl named DiDi, whose parents are on the edge of serious trouble. The game doesn't fully explain itself at the start. and certain events make you wonder if the often surreal landscape you move through is simply reality colored by a young girl's imagination or something ... else ... yet to be discovered.

The game isn't perfect, of course. The shadow-shifting mechanic doesn't always activate as intended, forcing retries of a jump puzzle sequence. Also, for Steam PC users, the controls for this game were clearly designed for consoles, so if you have a USB game controller hooked to your PC, you'll almost certainly have a better time using that.

And again, the puzzles and the narrative style of Contrast will not appeal to every gamer, but if you're intrigued, I'd say take a look.

Contrast may well be a flawed gem, in some ways, but it's still a gem. Gamers often say they want "something different" in their gaming. Here it is. Recommended.

A nice concept completely ruined by a poor and rushed development. Not only this game is tremendously short (4 hours to get 100% completion, including replaying a chapter to get a thing I missed!), it's also full of glitches and the so called "secrets" are ridiculously easy to find. Moreover, the plot is undermined by a fragmented exposition which is just too rushed and specious to make sense like it should and ends abruptly leaving little to nothing to the player.

There were many good ideas at the base of this title and It's pretty clear that the developers had issues in the making of it, but even considering that and making an effort to appreciate its aesthetics it's nearly impossible to recommend Contrast to anyone. Not even at a sale price.

What a strange game this is. Is a bad game? No. If you like light (no pun intended) puzzle games with an Ok narrative an good music and art direction you are going to enjoy this. Is short, the mechanics are pretty clear aside of one puzzle, with an easy solution if you just ignore what the game is teaching you up to that moment (what is doing is introducing a new mechanic), but is nothing really horrible in the grand scheme of things, the collectibles are pretty easy to spot (some are tied to the story of the game wich is something that i really don´t like in games but in this case it kind of didn´t matter really much) and you are not gonna be heavily challenged by it. If you are not in that side of the playing field, this game is not for you
On the other hand, when i finished i couldn´t shake the feeling that this game somehow loses the opportunitty of being something really special, because it has a lot of potential, puzzles could be more interesting and the story coud have packed a lot more punch in the emotional side. I know that is a little unfair to punish a game for what it could have been an it isn´t, but some games show hints of what could have been an amazing experience and you can avoid that kind of sourness in your mouth, but, like i said, if you like this kind of games and have little time in your hands to play or you want some palate cleanser between more intense experiences this is a game you should enjoy, i certainly did it, but damn, it could have been really good

A small indie game that is not only great to look at but also being played.

It has two unusual leading characters - a young girl accompanied by an adult woman -, is set in a rare environment (France 1920s) and always tries to reward you with a snippet of story after you complete a puzzle. Puzzles get repetitive after a while as in any platformer but it doesn't manage to reach the point it gets bothersome as the game isn't that long, circa 6 hours without chasing collectibles and occasional hiccups. I haven't encountered any bugs (W7, i5-2400, ATI HD 6870 1GB, 8 GB).

If you like Braid, chances are you will enjoy Contrast too.
