Reviews

"This is a quality piece of software. Even without the extra modules, this is simply amazing. The SU-25T is one of my favourite jets of all time, and it is brilliantly realised here, with so much content you feel guilty for getting it for free.

This only goes to show the confidence that DCS have in there Digital Combat Simulator, that they would give you so much for free. Stop reading this and go and download it now!." – Hubpages

"DCS World is a must-have for simulation enthusiasts who want as real as you can get in their home PC." – SimHQ

I am writing this because of many misleading reviews and comments. Most if not all of the negative reviews are coming from people who thought it was an arcade game. It is not. DCS World is a SIMULATOR game. So if you dont like to spend hours learning how to fly a specific plane you should stay away from it. However if you are into flight sim games its one of the best games out there. 10/10 Would crash my Su-25 again.

P.S. Ignore the game time. Most of my flight hours are on the stand alone version.

I don't know why more people aren't playing this game. Sure its a bit confusing ( a lot of controls ) but once you get the hang of it, it's a great game and well written. I might be a bit prejudice because I'm ex Navy and I don't like the blood and guts games.

You will need a pretty monster PC to make this run at a suitable speed with any level of graphical fidelity.
Great with the interactive cockpits, so check before you Download DLC that they are interactive.

I'm a big noob for this type of hyper realistic flight simulation, and I play with pad+Keyboard+Mouse.
I Immediatly bought the MiG-21b, because it was praised as one of the best mod and also because the MiG-21bis is a F***ING MYTHIC BADASS MEAN LOOKING MOTHERF***ER
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pht5DFdEgBU
Well in the end, the game and especially the Mig mod are just amazing.
I took the time to understand the game and customize the controls (you'll have to read a little, guys ^^ ), almost everything on realistic settings and clickable cockpit (you can choose an "arcade" configuration with onscreen radar for exemple if you prefer), and I have flight feelings that I've never felt before,
For the moment after 28 hours of incredible pleasure, I'm still not able to take-off alone or to use the armement and avionics properly, I still didn't took part in a real mission except for basic tutorials, and I don't intend to play online.
I just FLY (also crash a lot and once got my ♥♥♥ exploded in 2 mn by a bot I forgot in the settings), and JUST THAT feels AWESOME,
In the end there is no known reality or parallel world where I could, as a healthy grown adult with fully fonctionnal brain who works and has a social life, fly a real MiG-21b loaded with an atomic bomb to the stratosphere while smoking Magic Green Tobacco and listening to the Deftones, so there's also that.

Disclaimer: I have hundreds and perhaps into the thousand hour territory on DCS World. I play on DCS Standalone so my Steam hours aren't exactly reliable.

DCS World is a study level sim excluding the FC3 aircraft. This is many, many steps above series such as Ace Combat or HAWX. Even the FC3 aircraft are above the level of simulation you might see in something such as War Thunder sim battles. The level of enjoyment you have will correlate to both how into flight sims you are and how much effort you are willing to put into learning your aircraft(s). Do not expect to hop into multiplayer and shoot down a number of people on day 1. It's just not going to happen.

However, if you stick with it, you'll find an amazing community that has done a tremendous amount of work towards turning this into one of the best simulators out there (on par with Falcon BMS 4.33). Communities such as the buddyspike team create an atmosphere where teamwork and large scale coordination is not only encouraged, but crucial. In both single player campaigns and multiplayer full scale warfare, this sim is as real as it gets outside of flying the actual plane. I can't even begin to describe the feeling of being deep in the AO and behind enemy lines running all sorts of operations or having a GCI coordinate a large scale air war. The amount of focus and effort required is large, and the learning curve is quite steep.

If you've got what it takes, I highly recommend this sim. The modules are without a doubt expensive, but as they are as close as a civilian can get to flying these aircraft, the price is more than just. Considering that you can spend hundreds of hours in each one of these aircraft, the cost isn't as bad as you'd initially expect. Plus, there's a ton of sales all the time on DCS Standalone. I rarely pay full price for any module.

Hard to learn the controls and very confusing to fly and take off. Only a couple of planes you start off with and to get the other planes you have to buy them and they are expensive even for a free game.

Childhood dream of being a Fighter Pilot

18th birthday, applied to Airforce to be Fighter Pilot

Had interview with Officer Selection Board

Got torn a new one by the Army Officer on panel, was promptly rejected

Dream destroyed

Ran home to Mum and cried like a sissy girl for a week

11 years later found DCS World

Dream now fulfilled

Thank you Eagle Dynamics for making this kids dream come true

I am 43 years old and I have been playing flight simulators for almost 30 years. I have watched them develop over many platforms ranging from Commodore 64 to modern day computers we have today. I just recently purchased a thrustmaster warthog and thrustmaster rudder pedals and downloaded DCS with some modules. This simulator is so sweet it almost brings me to tears. With the graphics cranked up it runs smooth as butter. The realism is the likes of something I have never seen in a simulator and I have flown the best simulators in the past. Do not listen to any negative reviews about this simulator. Take my word for it... it is simply amazing! You better be ready to learn how to fly with this one. The learning curve is not that difficult for me but for a beginner this would be brutal. This is a high-end simulator made for people who can to play. And they're working on 2.0!

Disclaimer:
I haven't played DCS that much yet. I'm just getting into it. So the reason I write this review so early ist because there are a lot of misleading reviews out there.

So, I read some reviews for DCS a while ago, and I noticed that there seems to be some confusion about what DCS is.
Many bad reviews seem to be based around what genre this game is, or the difficulty, or the DLC policy.
So let's adress that:
1. This game is no arcade flight game like War Thunder! This is the be all end all when it comes to realism in military flight simulations. The gold standard for the best flight models and most emersive gameplay. That means it's a huge treat for realism fans, but also means that casual fans of arcady flight sims might be turned off.
So before you buy think about what you want from this game. If it isn't the ultra realism you will get, then don't buy it!
2. The difficulty stems from the realism. The fact that some planes have every single button and lever modelled and functional in a cockpit means that you will need a lot of knowledge and routine before you can fly those planes well.
You will need to do tutorial missions multiple times, probably fly a dozen training or free flight missions and read 500+ page Flight Manuals before you can consider yourself an effective pilot. Those who don't have the passion or time to do this might still enjoy casual flying around and attacking a few stationary targets, but you will be at a big disadvantage to those who put in the time.
3. The DLC policy. Here is the biggest misconception. DCS World is NOT a free game with all planes unlocked. DCS World is the framework, that ties together all other modules of DCS and conveniently gives you two free planes to fly on top.
The reason for the high prices of the DLCs is simple. Every aircraft DLC is a standalone plane, with training missions and campaigns. Some are cheap because they don't have fully modelled cockpits, and others cost 50€ because the planes are fully modelled, and could probably be used for military training simulations. That's how good they are! For that kind of quality, a lot of work, time and research is needed. That's why I don't consider the DLCs to be overprized. If you don't have the money, wait for a sale, there are many sales on DCS.

On a last note. Get at least a decen HOTAS system. Headtracking isn't mandatory but nice, but without a HOTAS your screwed!

By far the greatest combat sim you can get your hands on. First module you should get is the A10C then get yourself the TM Warthog. Its the closest you'll get to flying the real thing.

The A10C is one of the most complex aircraft in DCS. If you sort of know your way around the A10C the other modules become a lot easier to learn and figure out so its defintely a good module to start with and one of the cheapest.

DCS takes time so if thats not your thing than its probably not for you. The manual for the A10C is 671 pages to give you an idea of how complex it is. This is the reason these aircraft are "expensive". You are basically flying the real thing

I have a lot more than 83hrs as I dont use the Steam version

Im a big aviation fan and the same goes for simming. This sim exceeds all expectations, Want it as real as it gets? then get the module that gives you 100% immersion and controll of the aircraft systems, controlls ect. Be warned! expect to read alot, learn alot and put alot of hours into learning the aircraft and how to operate it. On the other hand you can fly the simpler flight models which just require simple keyboard commands to operate the systems. Very well reccomended.

This game, I believe isn\'t a game. I rather call it a simulator. This is a good simulator for Aviation Enthusiasts who love to operate behind the cockpit and fly and engage into combat. I definitely recommend it. You get free Aircraft within the download, like for e.g the SU-25 Frogfoot.

To extend the selection of aircrafts, DCS has other Aircraft and Helicopters you could pay for which I would recommend too. Flying is very fun, and I think is also a great way to learn how to fly aircraft. It teaches you the basics of navigation, operating in air, and starting up an aircraft.

I do not have a great enough Laptop, but I was able to run this just fine on 4GB Ram, 1.80 Ghz on the lowest settings in the options.
