5/10 - A alright game but not good for the start of the Fallout series. We need a redo or remaster.

The fallout lore was never really introduced to this game or New Vegas, and this game is not really a good game to introduce to the series. I think after fallout 4 Bethesda & obsidian need to restart. Welp this game is alright for 2008. I think bethesda needs to do a redo, because this game was very bland, very buggy, not compatible with windows 7, 8, or 10. It also has a very kiddish acting vibe and scripts. This game is also very freezy. It has a rate of freezing every 2 hours. even though I play on a brand new pc with a 980, 16gb ram, and intel i7 6700.

While I do recommend this game, I do very much suggest that before you try to play, you should go to the nexus modding website and download the unoffical patch for this game. I highly recommend this because it will make it much easier on you and make it much more likely for the game to run.

This game is honestly crap, wish I'd never bought it. The story is terrible, the gameplay is buggy, the game crashes constantly and just everything. I was expecting an RPG, but I got an action FPS. Get the original games if you want a good fallout game or ditch fallout and get an elder scrolls game.

Is your Fallout 3 GOTY PC copy always freezing every 5 minutes? Here's an easy fix:
1) Search the fallout.ini file (back it up if you want)
2) Find the line: bUseThreadedAI=0
3) Change the line to: bUseThreadedAI=1
4) Now add another line after it and insert: iNumHWThreads=2

This will limit the game to 2 cores, and prevent the engine from freezing. Ever since I've used this quick solution I've had zero crashes. Have fun!

I've tagged Fallout 3 as one of my top games in my Steam account. I've actually put way more hours into it than my Steam account shows (see note below), and it's one of my favourite games of all time.

I love the post apocalyptic setting - this game really pulls it off. But unlike some of the other Bethesda games such as Skyrim (which I also love!) this one has a really engaging landscape. There is stuff to check out everywhere! I get so sidetracked when doing quests because there's always something that catches my eye and I think "oooh what's that?" and I go check it out. There's so much to do!

In the most part the quests are really good, but I admit I was getting a little bit annoyed near the beginning of the main quest with the constant "looking for Dad".

One thing that is great about FO3 is the very satisfying weapons. Some shooters can be a little weak, and RPGs are usually weaker still with the FPS elements but I found FO3 to be very solid. Yeah the AI is not brilliant but the weapons themselves feel very good. I particularly love taking somebody's head off from half a mile away with a sniper rifle :-)

Also, you can't really talk about a Bethesda game without discussing mods! I'm a big modding fan and I never play these games vanilla for very long. I used FWE, MMM & EVE along with several mods that added new perks and a mod that allowed you to level up more slowly but get several perks per level which I really liked.

Overall, it's a fantastic game and I'm really looking forward to playing New Vegas and then Fallout 4! (Yep, I'm seriously behind on my gaming!)

Windows 7 Users Please Note:
=====================

When I first started playing the game it was around 2011 and I ran it on an Alienware Windows XP machine and it ran very well. Then I stopped playing for a few years and came back to the game later after I had moved into a Windows 7 machine.

It crashed constantly, and when I saw constantly, I really mean it! After literally weeks of trying to get it to play properly on my 64 bit Win7 machine, trying every fix out there I gave up. However, I managed to get a pirated version of the game to work (doh!)

So whilst I absolutely recommend the game to anyone who loves shooters, RPGs or post apocalyptic games, if you have a Windows 7 machine, don't get the Steam version. Try and find an old disc based copy instead.

I don't know why but whenever I start playing FO3, I get bored of it after completing about 75% of the game and stop playing. I started a third new game 3 days ago and played about 23 hours in just three days but just got bored. I am guessing that this has something to do with:

- Low citizen and human settlement count. Also some of these so called settlements only consist of 2-3-5 people (i.e. Girdershade).
- Major settlements such as Megaton and Rivet City have no logical reason to be major settlements. Maybe Megaton stays alive thanks to travelling caravans and only two Brahmin located in the centre (even Arefu has three) but there is no explanation of how Rivet City can even survive.
- Terrible gunplay, bullet sponge enemies such as Super Mutant Overlords, Feral Ghoul Reavers and Albino Radscorpions. For example a direct hit to a Super Mutant Overlord with a badass Fat Man will only take 33%-50% of its HP.
- Downtown DC, the most interesting part of the game is just rubble (justifiable) and all travelling goes through dungeon like metro tunnels.
- Quests are mostly forgettable and most of them are just glorified fetch quests. Some of the unmarked quests would make better quests if they were fleshed out.
- Factions are not fully developed and more interesting minor factions like The Union or Republic of Dave can be fully explored and related quests can be completed very quickly, without any human interaction.

Compared to New Vegas, where some major quests included very interesting and meaningful dialogues, a world that does not only revolve around you and combat being mostly an option and not as tiresome as FO3, Washington DC is just a post apocalyptic playground.

Nevertheless FO3 can entertain a player for a long while even though you may not find yourself patient enough to complete it. If you want a real Fallout, a Fallout that continues the legacy of being a mature Post Postapocalyptic game, you can just skip this and get yourself over to Fallout: New Vegas.

Disclaimer: I got way more hours on this game than shown.

TL;DR Pretty good game if you're into Bethesda games, with typical emphasis on dialogue and exploration. Like any Bethesda game don't look here for particularly good gameplay though I would say it's not that bad, but at this point it may feel rather dated for an FPS.

I quite enjoyed this game, I rarely replay games, and this is one of the few I have, albeit my second playthrough was quite different from first. First being vanilla, no DLC with second being all DLC + a few of the most well known mods for the game.

Story - The main storyline is... Ok. Nothing special but passable for Bethesda main quest. As usual, side quests are where it's at for interesting story chunks. Though the last main mission is pretty epic.

Setting - Awesome world to explore. Chronologically it feels off but ignoring that, the world really gets what it set out to do, a lonesome nuked world. You can have plenty of fun simply walking around the world.

Gameplay - Pretty loose, wonky for an FPS. Personally on vanilla Fallout I just used VATS all the time. I wouldn't praise the game much for the gameplay, personally I find VATS to be decent but it's no top tier shooter or rpg in terms of action gameplay. Late game the game gets really easy, nothing will kill you once you hit higher levels. The dialogue system is great though and allows for choices that seem to matter, unlike fallout 4. The leveling system is great. All in all, the game is an rpg first shooter second.

Audio - The ambient non-radio music is very fitting, probably underrated since few actually listen to it. The radio has got those distinctive oldies retro songs everybody has come to love. Gun sounds are fine. The voices used for characters are pretty good.

Mods - The mod support for this game is top of the line. You can easily mod it to feel very different. Good ♥♥♥♥.

Lore - Something worth pointing out, though probably not an impact to many is that this game is NOT lore friendly to Fallout 1 or 2. This one of the biggest criticisms of this game, though many have not played those games (including myself) so you probably don't care, but it is what it is.

Really if you really enjoy Bethesda type games, where you just explore the world, get interesting sidequests, have great dialogue with npcs, then this really does it right. Just don't expect an amazing shooter, or a pretty looking game.

Part 1: How to play Fallout 3 on windows 10

1) Open the properties on the exes and active administrative mode and set compatibility to xp service pack 3
2) Open Fallout.ini in C:\Users\(insertusernamehere)\Documents\My Games and search for "bUseThreadedAI" no quotes, change the zero to a one
3) Right below it add a line "iNumHWThreads=2" no quotes
4) Download this and apply it to Fallout.exe --> http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/1086/?

Viola, worked for me, should work fine for you.

OPTIONAL: If you want a lot less bugs since Bethesda sucks at optimizing games, download and install this --> http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/19122/?

(I know I kind of copied the guide, but since so many reviews are moaning about it not working, I think posting this here is more useful)

ACTUAL REVIEW:

Fallout 3 was my first entry into the fallout franchise, as such it will always hold a special place in my heart. It's not perfect, but it's a damn enjoyable game. Arguably the best location of all the fallout games, some great exploration, good storytelling, etc. While New Vegas is my favorite, this holds a close second. Both are still better than Fallout 4.

If you're looking for your first fallout game, don't get fallout 4, get this one.

This was the first time I ever encountered the Fallout series, and through the literal s**tstorm that was GFWL I persisted. I must have pumped over 500 hours into this baby, not including the steam hours and this game still gives me thrills. DLC is still fun and engaging, and the fact that I've memorized so much of this game and can still get surprised by plot twists and random encounters speaks wonders. Or perhaps I'm mentally degenerating by the day, who knows?

My final recommendation for Fallout 3, 9/10. Its a beautiful game for its time but still has the Bethesda Notorious Bugginess; yet when it works still packs its atmospheric punch.

Also, F**K Ghoul Reavers.
