I really recommend a console gamepad or a wheel first of all, and I dont think either gives you a competitive advantage over the other. The sensitivity and deadzones can be altered when using a gamepad.
Gameplay and driving physics are very solid, although it can sometimes feel very 'on rails' at times as the car doesn't move around much vertically under normal load. However you can still definitely feel the balance of the car and how it moves and slides, and setup changes make a meaningful difference.
AI is extremely good in single player, like racing a real driver, and they do not cause many incidents which disrupt the race. The level of pace they race at can be changed and on legendary mode they are pretty formidable. However when overlapping them things can get a bit hairy as when you are approaching them and they receive the blue flag, they move over to the opposite side of the track to you. This can cause problems such as when you take a wide line to enter a corner the AI moves to the apex as they think this will get them out of the way, but as you take the racing line to overtake them and cut back to the apex they will be obstructing you.
Lots of single player game modes which are fun, but in the shortened 'season challenge' mode the hardest AI difficulty makes them about 2 seconds a lap slower than the legendary AI, which for some like myself just isnt competitive enough.
The full career mode is very in depth and focuses on you beating your team mate, which is what will earn you contract offers. This is very good because you are both given the same car with the same technology, and it comes down to driving skill in the end.
Overall it is a very solid racer and very fun to play. If you just enjoy getting the feel for cars like me the game can be very fun. 9/10
