Took me a little while to understand the mapping part of the game. You basically have to identify at least two man made structures (Building, statue, beacon) to pinpoint where you are on the map then find other unknown structures that are also in view and they then become known. You can now use those identified structures as map elements. Don't wander too far, try to keep these map markers in view and keep checking the map to add more pieces to it.
The concoctions you can make are temporary ones or permanent ones. You can carry only one of each temporary type so don't bother making two basic medicines, just make one basic and one enhanced. The weapons seem practically useless so far, there is a beast that stalks you, attacking with knife or axe doesn't seem to bother it at all. Ducking into cover doesn't seem to help much but getting behind hard cover like a tree does.
You have to drink quite often but fresh water is plentiful, yet in seven game days I haven't eaten anything so the finds of bananas and apples lying around don't seem to matter.
Climbing even the gentlest of slopes can be difficult and it is super easy to go tumbling off and falling. Try hitting reverse when sliding down a hill to slow your descent, that helps. Save by lighting anything (beacon, candle, fire, lantern) or by sleeping and keep an eye on the time, right mouse button brings up a compass and wrist watch, when it gets dark...it gets REALLY dark! You can get lost very quickly at night or go falling off a cliff, we forget living as we do in towns and cities that street lighting however dim is still there, in this game there's you holding a piddling little lighter unless you find brush to use as a torch until it fizzles out a minute later.
I am enjoying it immensely, yes it feels a little clumsy at times and low budget but the night time without a torch and no where near a camp confusion is very real, and then there's the beast tracking you, when you see it coming for you and you run, panic just sets in, fighting it doesn't do anything, just have to run or hide.
