Miasmata is a first-person survival/adventure game, developed from the ground-up by brothers Joe and Bob Johnson. You play as Robert Hughes, a plague-stricken scientist on a journey to discover a cure. Your adventure begins on the shores of a remote and mysterious island. Long ago, the island was inhabited by a group of indigenous people, whose extant monuments still decorate the island landscape. The island is now home to a scientific research outpost and it is your hope to reunite with your colleagues working there. Unfortunately, you'll soon discover that something has gone terribly wrong.

During your adventure, you will encounter a mysterious and deadly creature. This creature can stalk you for miles, lurking behind grasses and vegetative cover. By treading carefully and with stealth, you may be able to elude the creature. If you are careless, however, you will be forced to confront the creature head-on.

Key Features

  • Experience: An engine built from the ground up, featuring voxel-based volumetric clouds, advanced water reflection and refraction, volumetric light-shafts and atmospheric scattering simulations.
  • Explore: A lush and incredibly detailed natural world. The island landscape is covered by forests with lush canopies. The terrain surfaces are blanketed by tufts of moss and grass. The forest floors have thick undergrowth and are littered with fallen leaves, rotting logs, stumps and sticks.
  • Discover: Dozens of camps, outposts and ruins. Find maps, notes and clues that lead you on your adventure.
  • Survive: A deadly world. Discover plants and fungi and synthesize them into life-saving medicines. Find water and shelter to stave off fever, dehydration and exhaustion. Use stealth and cunning to escape the deadly creature.
  • Create: A map of the island using an innovative cartography mechanic. Use a true-to-life triangulation system to pinpoint your location on the island and construct a map of the its boundaries, contours and landmarks.

I couldn't continue playing this game, The graphics and head bobbling / blur just made me absolutely sick. If your like me have motion sickness for things like that, best to avoid. Couldn't really turn it off, maybe it'll be added in the future.

Overall Gameplay Thoughts
You play as Robert Hughes, a scientist who has come to an island named Eden (subtle) to cure an unnamed plague that he’s been stricken by. He hopes to meet up with a group of scientists to to work on figuring out the cure but upon arrival, he finds one of them dead and clearly something has gone wrong. What suggests to be a murder though quickly fades into the background. If there was a murderer(s) on the island, the game almost seems to forget about it after the opening ten minutes of the game. Instead, it decides to focus its attention on the crafting system and surviving the creature prowling the island to eventually fixing the cure. What little story that’s there isn’t really enough to capture my attention. Not when we’re talking about unknown persons on an unknown island trying to cure an unknown plague for themselves and an unknown number of people. If there is more lore to this game, it takes far too long to get there. What you’re left with is “surviving” the island.

Gameplay Examination
The game features a creature that they claim will stalk you for miles, lurking behind grasses, vegetation and overall trying to hunt you down. It’s supposed to be a smart AI but it isn’t. The AI doesn’t do a very good job of hunting the player down and can easily lose sight of the player behind a thin tree. Simply outrunning it is also a viable option which really dampens the threat it has. One particular event in the game really showed me how poorly designed the AI had been. I had been heading towards a new part of the island to find more ingredients for the cure. I was walking along, seeing birds fly about when I started hearing my character’s heartbeat. So, I found some grass to hide in and crouched down. The game’s UI will warn you when the creature has spotted you. Which is interesting considering how much the devs tried to go out of their way to avoid using traditional UI before this point. There is only a limited amount of UI used, instead the game relies on in-game items like a paper map and journal to display information. It carries all of your notes, information you research and current status. It’s a pretty neat, if clunky, and in need of further polish.

So, I waited for the creature to pass me by. After it did, I moved further into the island towards another outpost. Along the way there, I found a pond and I heard my character’s heartbeat going faster. The creature had found me. So, I move down the ledge, hid behind a thin tree and crouch to find out where it was. It was up on the ledge, looking for me. It then came down the ledge, awkward animations and all, going right past me. It should have spotted me at that point but apparently this super hunter is incredibly bad at hunting. It goes down to the water and circles about, unaware of where I am so I decide to test how good its “vision” is. It finally does spot me, when I had gotten far closer than I should have been able to, so I try to back off. It wasn’t having any of that so I stood my ground and decided to fight. The creature swipes a paw at me and…..nothing happens. I’m moving around a little bit but I should have been easily hit. It swipes a couple more times and still nothing happens. I decide to run away. Despite the creature following me, I suffer no damage and am able to run away. Then it gets stuck on a wall that I went around and stood there impotently growling at me. I stood there, sorely disappointed.

PC Settings and Audio/Video
The performance of Miasmata is pretty poor and older hardware will have a tough time running it. As stated before, the visuals for this game are ugly, poorly defined and lacking color. Miasmata has aged very badly in the years since I first played it. The graphics and overall style just feels ugly. I’m not even sure why it got or continues to get praise for its graphical fidelity when games that came out a year prior look far and away better than it does. Nothing is really appealing, with a world darkened by grey hues and lack of color outside of grass and the occasional flower. It’s a game that’s just draining on the eyes, if the mechanics aren’t draining on the player. There are very rare moments when the game might look good but these are outweighed by a world that needed a lot more development time. To at least make an island that would be genuinely more interesting to explore. As it stands, there’s just a lot of grass, trees, streams, beaches some flowers and small hills to run around. Nothing really peaks my curiosity about the place. Audio design is in bad need of an overhaul. While the soundtrack is reasonable, the audio atmosphere is lacking most of the time and there are plenty of sound effects missing.

Final Thoughts
It’s a very two dimensional exploration and survival game. There’s no real incentive for exploring the island. The only items that can be found are barely usable weapons, torches and flowers. That’s it. There’s no reason to explore the island for its graphics, that’s for certain.Few games have ever shattered my immersion so completely like Miasmata has done in this genre. Upon seeing the creature’s easily gameable flaws and generally being worn down by the uninteresting mechanics, I had enough. This game is just ugly, both mechanically and visually. The crafting system is a bore, the triangulation navigation system is repetitive and unrewarding and just traveling around the island can be the biggest threat to your survival, not the creature. The visual style has a sense of being constantly dirty and faded out that it drains me to even look at it. This is a game that had such promise but ultimately falls short. A custom engine that didn’t do anything that unique at the time, a premise that in the right hands could be a lot of fun but was clearly not in those hands. It didn’t help that it got very little post-release support but I guess that’s unsurprising in this case. IonFX has been very quiet since Miasmata was released to the point that I think the company may have failed. Simply put, a lot better games have come out since Miasmata and are worth your attention more than this one.

Slow-paced, immersive, and eventually deeply creepy. I had to give up on using headphones because the sound of my own heartbeat in my ears was making me jumpy. The cartography system is brilliant, the island is fun to explore, and the game ends just as the novelty starts to wear off.

The woods calling your name?
Need a great hiking game?
Miasmata is great
go out by the lake
and enjoy a night in the rain.

The game is gorgeous, you see.
The wilderness captivated me.
Animals populate the world,
see the cute little squirrels,
And beetles and butterflies and bees.

But a game about walking is boring.
Unless theres a story tucked in.
There's a plague and some guys,
but WHOOPS they all died,
and a monster wants to eat you for din-dins.

Now there are problems within.
For you see, there's more than walking.
You run and you slide
there's no way to hide
and the inertia is poorly written.

The basis of the game is find plants.
But not just for sustenence.
You need them for meds
or you'll wind up dead
with a monster doing the happy dance.

You use traingulation to find your way,
Which is neat as you map out each day.
But the trails are confusing
You just keep on losing
your place, and wind up astray.

So it's great for looking around,
wildlife and vistas abound,
But when you can hear your heart,
and the frantic bits start,
You'll just wind up hurt on the ground.

This game was very special experience for me. I didn't find yet anything similar. It was frightening, I don't think any game scared me so much as this one, but that was positive experience making high adrenalin rush.

This game looks like something special, the premise and the gameplay it presents are amazing when they work. But I can't get past the clunky movement, it's so off putting that I just can't get into the game. It forces you off hills you should be able to stand on, and it decides when and where you should be. Based on the movement alone I can't recommend this, although the systems and mechanics in this game are pretty fun otherwise.

Absolute gem. A quiet game for those who like to get lost in a world without gunfire and explosions. A very calming game (... mostly) and with a little plot to unravel Not too hard – very achievable, but so pleasant. A ‘Sunday morning’ game!
Loved the graphics, plot, game lore and gameplay.

Strangely, I never wrote a review during or after my time playing.
I played this game a long time ago. I was absoloutely immersed in it.
When I think back to playing this game I cant remember anything beyond the bezels of my monitor.
I was just in the game and It acheives this incredible level of immersion if you as the player play with it.

Its extremely hard to find your barings on the island. And thats what the game is all about. If you let it, Miasmata will make a more experienced orienteer in real life situations because so much of your spatial memory has to be engaged while you play.

Very unlike anything I have ever come across since or before.
Absoloutely loved it.

Pro:
The map system is great, in fact it is the only thing worthwhile in the game. While it could utilize a lot of work (including creating your own marker points) it is the first semi-realistic mapping system I have seen.

Cons:
Bad Physics with a fair try. they tried to make the system quasi physics based (but took physics 101 and stupped), the speeds and slowdowns are unrealistic and remind me of mario on ice or something that way. Your like some old weak freak that can't climb worth crap or fall more than 3 inches, gets tired after a short (very short) sprint, and falls like a drunk on saturday night. Moving is frustrating and pathetic.

You can only carry one object, 3 flowers, and apparently a book with you. While many games let you carry more than is realistic, this game thinks the only place to hold things is your hand apparently. Oh and don't go for a swim, you will drop everything (and likely never find it again), even a tiny pond can mess you up.

Graphics Suck: There is no brightness control, so at night on my screen is pitch black, a cloud makes it as dark as night would be. Due to the poor graphics (I maxed them out and still the detail is crap) you can see things very far away with in detail, as the game's mapping system requires you notice things far away, this is a pain.

Boring: Outside of mapping and needing to drink 5 galons of water a day, the only thing you do is gather plants in an attempt to find the right mixes. There is a beast on the island to chase you around, though I am not exactly sure why. You can only carry three flowers on you, so to do any real experimenting requires you do a lot of back and forth. No need to protect yourself from weather or even eat food, so it does not even qualify as a survival game.

Suggestions:
Take the mapping system, get rid of the monsters, and be the first true survival game. So many games out there come close on a lot of areas, but mess it up by either adding unbeatable uber monsters or have crappy world interactions. This game does both. The idea of a quest/story line is great, but it's so tedious and slow to get flowers, the I feel it falls very short of it's potential benefit.

I finished this game in about 10 hours (breaks included). I purchased this game a few years ago, but the game demanded high specifications and I didn't have that. Today, I own a GTX 780, 16GB RAM, i7-2600K, H60 Corsair WaterCooler and Windows 10. I was a bit disappointed because the game is still rather demanding. I ran the game at max setthings at approximately 80fps for the first 7 hours before it decreased down to approximately 50fps. Temperatures were constant at around 30-50 degrees celsius. The frame rate dropped to around 40fps when I entered the swamps to get the Bio-Luminescent Algae. I would honestly say that this game is BADLY optimized. There are a lot of BUGS, screen freeze, random lags, black outs and crashes. I had approximately 15 game crashes, 5 screen freeze and 3 black outs. When I start the game sometimes the background and the menu gets divided into crazy horizontal shaky lines, then the game crash. The game crashes when I press Esc and go to the menu and stay there for a couple of minutes. It also crashes when I go back to Windows or on the Steam Overlay. It also crashes when I get a random screen freeze / black out. However, I managed to save the game before every crash. My screen only froze and turned black when I toggled the map twice. The character is EXTREMELY BUGGY, when I want to walk to the right I skate to the left, when I want to walk backwards, I become super super slow, when I am running really fast I began to slide down and then tumble down, then I eventually lose my plants and weapons. I do not like the animation of the character. It feels cheap and unrealistic. I am not even swaying my weapon properly, my right arm is so STIFF that I cannot bend it. When I throw my weapon the swooshing sound effect is delayed for like 1-2 seconds. The graphics of the game needs more texture, the natural environment looks pretty to look at, but I do not like how the characters where made and especially my hands. I enjoyed the plot and the twist of the game. However IonFx should have spent more time on the ending. There should be different endings to add more playtime and make the game more interesting. E.G. A New+ game where you can play as the creature / scientists.

My rating of this game: 6/10
The game can ENRAGE some players.
