What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I believe that the best game will be created together with the people who are playing the game. I also believe that the time is right. Over the past year the development have shifted more and more from engine and graphics programming to gameplay mechanics and content. Now is a fun time for you to play the game and take part in the development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“A year is a good guess. After that development will go on as usual and I will continue to do regular updates and DLCs.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There are many ways to play but the main game is the "start with nothing and build an empire". This is already possible in the Early access version. The full version will add challenge in the form of hostile mobs that will try to stop you. It will also add more content like better/more building tools, block types, materials, biomes, mobs and items.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In its current state the game offers countless of hours of fun and has infinite replay value. You can play the game or build whatever you want in the "Just Build" mode. The game is very stable. Current savegames will be compatible with future versions.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The full game will be priced a bit higher then the Early Access version.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The development process has been very open for years. I release new updates at a steady rate. I often ask questions to the community and take part in discussions and the feedback I get is of high value for me.”

Build 1327935 released

This update is all about the player physics. There have been several problems since the beginning of Blockscape and so I finally decided to rewrite all the collision detection and response algorithms. I am very happy with the result.

- No more stuck in narrow openings like doors.
- No more see through wall glitches.
- No more walking through thin objects.
- No more glitches that lets you climb vertical walls.

Full list of features and fixes:

[x] UI state models are not disposed? (problem was that I split before delete)
[x] Need a better solution for walking in stairs
[x] New block model usage: ladder (forgot to add that one in the last update)
[x] Calculate response from normal at the intersection. Using face normal is not correct now!
[x] Fix fallback collision detection
[x] Player should not be able to climb diagonal vertical walls
[x] Need a more solid solution for checking if player can jump. Done!
[x] Player sometimes gets stuck in narrow openings like doors
[x] Player can move through thin objects
[x] Player can see through walls in some cases
[x] New collision and response module

Build 1320144 released

This updates is all about the inventory. A first step to make it more user friendly.

- Materials are now auto sorted.
- Material group tabs are only visible if they have content.
- You can now drag the tool itself onto the player model. Makes sense when you only have one variant of the tool in survival mode.

Full list of features and fixes:

[x] Must check if tab is is visible _and_ selected when drawing tabs
[x] New materials should be placed in the hotbar if possible
[x] Current material tab is reset after drag and drop?
[x] Hide material tabs that are empty
[x] Material inventory auto-sorting
[x] Make it possible to drag a tool to player model (use currently selected material or default)
[x] Tools that are dragged appear behind the hotbar in the inventory
[x] Create icon for copy/paste tool

About This Game

!!! This game is in Early Access which means it is not finished. It really is the best block building game but please understand that there will be missing features and bugs. No updates means I'm working very hard. This is the project of my life, I will never abandon it. !!!

Start with nothing and build an empire. Blockscape is the ultimate block building game.

You are sent to this world to start a new civilization. Explore, gather materials, craft and build.
Build beds and people will move in. Give them food and they will do work for you.

Main features:
  • Fully procedurally generated worlds. Every game looks and plays different.
  • Play the game you want. Blockscape can be played like a survival game, rpg (not available yet), tower defence (not available yet) or like an empire building game. The type of gameplay is based on what you create or do in the game.
  • Crafting. Create furniture, tools, weapons, armor, materials and more.
  • NPCs. Create beds and people will move in to your buildings. Give them food and they will do work (crafting, planting, harvesting, construction).
  • Hundreds of block types and materials.
  • Everything is a block. Everything in your inventory can also be used as a building block. Even mobs.
  • Electricity. Add electric networks to your buildings to control lights and other components.
  • Water. Add water networks to supply generators and control water components.
  • "Just build" game mode. Gives you infinite resources to build anything you want.

I have never played this game.

This game is so poorly optimized that on the 3 different computers I've had over the course of having bought Blockscape, I have never once gotten past the launch screen. On the LOWEST settings possible, I have launched the game and sat for hours on hours, doing other tasks, hell, going to class for a day, waiting to see if it'd be on when I'm done. It's never started. I've never played.

If I understand correctly it's been, what, some 2 years now?
Shouldn't you, by now, have some idea of how to optimize your game so that casual players (who, I feel, a casual open world creative game is marketed towards) can play it?

I don't recommend it unless you possess a computer that can calculate the 475,832nd digit of pi, because apparently this games graphics are more taxing than GTA V on Medium to High on my 2 in one laptop built for office/school work.

got the game over 2 years ago and have only seen it updated twice it is incomplete glitchy crashes and even though it is beautifull its a waste of $20 as of now

update: the game is now playable and the survival is fun you can advance getting tools and stuff now there are 2 seperate modes there is the realistic mode that i prefer with the game being more pretty although it does seem to feel empty still but i have only been playing on my current world for 2 hours so far
i tried the other game mode and it looks alright even though i started in the dessert it looks nice and feels like there is a little more for some reason. and reminds me more of minecraft alpha. and once i started digging i soon realized there was a maximum depth and if you fell below it you would continue to fall without any way to return to the surface..

overall i would say i am pleased with the updates that have occured so far but the game doesnt feel like it has advanced a whole lot since it was first released on its website long before it came to steam

update again
after 4 hours of playing the game started to get extreamly buggy graphics were not loading i wold bounce off the watter when trying to jump into it and maybe due to weight i could no longer swim.. now after i saved and restarted the game i cannot reload into my saved file and am dissapointed but still hope the game becomes good

september 2016 update:
i think i can finally recomend this game IF it continues to get updates
the game runs way better and hasnt crashed on me since i re installed it and played 10 or so hours of there are things to do in it now aome mobs. the water is still irritating though, infinit water blocks that drips more infinit water.
needs new music

I would not recomend any game that starts out as a detailed environment and then tries to become a blockscape clone. Updates have been non existant and gameplay is so-so. Not worth the money even if it was free.

I played this game for a short amount of time before getting too cringed and pruned up like as if I would eat 12 lemons and eat some acid. I do not like the controls, I do not like the style, and I would prefer to play prison archetect on build mode instead of this. I would rather play minecraft for it's simplicity. I give it a 2/10 for trying,

The bones of this game to be are pretty strong - a lot of potential, the world generation is very nice, the editing options and general block layouts offer a trememdous amount of options, but so far it is pretty far from being an actual game - crafting progression, UI and general amount of things to do is rudimentary at best.
I recommend putting this on your watchlist, the foundation seems solid and once someone starts taking care of actual gameplay it might turn into one of those gems that you sink an endless amount of hours into. Right now it's ninety minutes of frustration until ragequit. ;)

The first thing is to ignore all of the promo pictures of this game at the time of writing this. They are from a version of the game that will not be developed further. The realistic look is gone. Apparently the developer couldn't figure out how to make that work properly and instead of hiring help, he's scrapping it entirely. The local evangelists will tell you it will still be available, but it needs a lot of development to reach a playable state, so that will not happen now.

The version that is now under development will look sort of like Mario64, see the project's webpage or the developer's twitter for screenshots of that. If that is what you want to like to build your creations in, then by all means get this game (or better yet, wait for it to be updated to an actually playeble state). I was lured in by the false pretenses of the realistic look and the new version is not the game I'd thought I was buying. Therefore, a big thumbs down from me.

Do not buy this game it is a waste of money, and no longer looks how it does in the screenshots/video

1) Single developer - One person working on this game
2) more bugs than an ant hill
3) No updates in forever
4) Developer wanted to "get back to his roots" and his inspiration for the game which was "Lego" so he's changed the entire look of this game to look like somthing closer to mine craft. I.E he bit off more than he could chew and took the easy route.

5) Crashes a lot.

Basically paid for something I will never get, not because of time constraints but because the dev changed the entire thing, I feel robbed.

Update 09/20/16: You can see my old review below, I havent kept track of blockscape progress after I parted ways at the end of last year so this update is to give you insight into what has changed, the developer finally updated the steam store page reflecting the current look of blockscape which now allows me to show you what it use to look like when I was a supporter of this game:

The developer completely disabled the forums on his site, thus hiding all the feedback he received against his current build but as you can see from the reviews most of the community that supported him have since followed his example and turned their back on him as well.

This is not something you want to invest in for one reason: while the talent of the developer is amazing you never know what your paying for, I payed for a realistic looking voxel game and now I am dealing with this, and without the developer providing a means of feedback your really at the whims of whatever mood the developer finds himself at any given day.

Update 09/09/15: its been seven months without any word from the dev, over a year and a half since the last update, forums are dead and the dev doesnt care that the community doesnt want his "new minecraft clone". LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR, the pictures shown on the store page are no longer what the game looks like! please look at the rest of the review to see how the game really looks.

While I have been a major supporter of this game even before it came on steam the direction that the developer has been taking it in is nothing but down hill going from beautiful landscapes as seen in the preview photos, to making it seen like a look alike to cubeworld and minecraft: (Link no longer works as the Developer deleted forums)

the developer even though said "Now is a fun time for you to play the game and take part in the development.” has stayed silent for 7months reworking the engine to this new design without any feedback from the community who purchased the game and is now know for his lack of communication and seems to be totally against his current community of followers now more then ever.

I cant recommend this game yet. I love the new style, dev is actually updating via Twitter(@JensBlomquist) which is useless for me having no care for using twitter. Crafting system is clunky and the flying bugs... oh god the flying bugs everywhere!

Dev release this overhaul of the original and the game is now mostly stable.

Will play more however save your money for now and wait for dev to get more progress

Where to start....

the game you see in the screen shots are NOT what we who backed this game back in 2014 or earlier was promised.
(what i mean whit backed is those who purchased the game before it got on to Steam at the devs webbsite)

the game no longer locks realistic as it used to.
now it locks like a minecraft clone but whit smaller blocks.

The game is so !"#¤ horrible optimised that even on the lowest of settings so does it crash ewery few minutes.

there is no options menue for sound or grafical options in game.

there is no tutorial for the game what so ewer. whitch in it selfe is realy sad for thoes who are new to this game.

the game gets so few updates that acculy matters so that i my self consider this game dead in its developement.

Shore it's a one man made game. but whit the money he earned from the kickstarter and steam greenlight he could easely hired at least one other person.

the dew of this game should honestly ether offer refounding. or hire a team to speed !!"#¤ up.

2 years and the 3 only diffresese i can see from when i kicked it is.

1. ditched the realistic lock for a !"#¤% blocky one.
2. added even !"#¤% monsters.
3. 2 years ago i could play this game on max whitout lagg. now even on lowest it runs like a slide picture show.

And there has been atleast 2 periodes where there has been 6 months of no updates what so ever.
and from what ive seen so are the forums dead too.

So if you still are reading this.

do your selfe and your wallet a favor.
and don't purchase this game untill it's atleast finished.

for as it is now it woulden't even be worth it if it was free.
