What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“There is no better way to gain valuable feedback and concrete suggestions than by allowing you guys to actually jump in and have at it so we decided that Steam Early Access is the best way for us to achieve this - just jump in, tear those zombies a new one (or two!) and we'll take care of the rest - or better yet, drop us a line and give us your feedback, we'd really appreciate it!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We've just hit open beta and we hope to be out of Early Access early next year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“As we've done so far we will continue to take your feedback and improve on the game, adding new features & modes that we see you guys will enjoy! We'll be re-balancing characters & weapons as we progress too, to make sure its the fairest experience with everyone.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game has just moved into Open Beta, bringing with it the first iteration of our brand new PvE mode: Crossroads which sees you and a three team mates set up camp in the morning and carry out four different randomly generated missions over the course of a day on ever changing maps. The missions range from freeing trapped survivors, gathering supplies, to fighting off hordes of zombies, defeating bosses and more.

Crossroads also awards and tracks your performance and scales the difficulty of the next mission accordingly. We've thrown some new zombie types into the mix as well and have added an all new zombie attribute system - from ranged damage resistance to faster running, harder hitting zombies, you will have to adapt how you fight the virus.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The open beta free to play with no purchase of early access packs now necessary to get access and we will continue this for the full game release later.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'd love to hear your feedback on this first version of Crossroads and as such we've added a link to a survey in the game, but as ever you can provide us with feedback on the Official Dead Island: Epidemic & Steam forums. We're continually working on adding new features & content and we’ll be constantly working on balancing and of course improving gameplay based on your feedback - along the way we’ll be intently listening to your suggestions, criticisms and as always: ideas for EVEN MOAR INSANE WEAPONS!”

Time to DI:E

Dead Island: Epidemic is a multiplayer action hack & slash arena. Players duke it out over supply points using an arsenal of crafted weaponry, a bevy of devastating powers, and good old-fashioned teamwork. And yeah, we've got zombies too - so there's that.

Co-Operate or Compete

It's you versus them. Or you versus them versus them versus them.

We’ve got two core modes – either team up with 3 other survivors and take on the zombie menace together in PvE co-op Crossroads mode, or take the fight to other players in our three-team "PvPvPvE" Scavenger mode where you'll battle it out in a competition to grab supplies, hold key points, outsmart the competition and blast through hordes of zombies.

Fight for your survival in our PvE-mode Crossroads. You set up camp in the morning and carry out four different missions over the course of a day in ever-changing maps and mission types. The missions range from freeing trapped characters and gathering supplies, to fighting off hordes of zombies or defeating bosses. Zombies have different attributes and change the way you fight them: From range-damage resistant to faster running, harder hitting zombies - you will have to adapt how you fight the virus.
Crossroads also rewards and tracks your performance, scaling the difficulty of the next mission accordingly.

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” – at least for a while

Epidemic’s PvP-mode pits three teams of 4 players each against each other in zombie-infested maps. The third team adds a new dynamic to this competitive mode and requires you to re-think your winning strategy: Do you build up enough of a lead to win before you are being dismantled by two teams? Or do you play it smart and align your goals with one of the adversary teams temporarily? The goal is to capture and hold strategic points and gather as many resources as possible to be victorious.

Combat

Take direct control of your character with the WASD keys plus mouse input and react to situations on the fly by switching between melee and ranged weapons.

Build and adjust weapons to your playstyle:

  • Earn blueprints from six different categories and build your weapon arsenal
  • Most weapons come with unique features and fit a specific role
  • You also earn weapon modifications which can be installed on to your weapons and add various attributes

From rotund, fanny-pack wearing badass tourists to redheads wielding weaponized crabs – and everything in between. Epidemic has a constantly expanding roster of unlikely heroes supporting varying play styles - whether you like your action up-close and personal, at range or through supporting your teammates.
Each character has an array of (often very bizarre) skills with which to wreak havoc - use these strategically in order to inflict maximum punishment on both the undead and those-you-want-to-be-dead.

It is a good game, lots of fun, coop is nice. The arena mode is pretty unnerving however, it is pretty underdeveloped especially the squad making and you can end up with some horrendous combinations. Also, most people make a lot of mistakes in tehre since no tutorials and such. But the characters are quite varied, and the weapon system is pretty sweet.

The prices are also quite outragous with new characters costing 20$ a pop which is simply ridicoulous. And the in-game currency price is ridiculous as well. I mean for instance most new characters cost 18000 character points and you get around 100 character points per game and most games run for at least 15-20 minutes. So 180 games X 15 mins = 45 hours to grind a new character. Kind a ridicoulous and like I said it is kind a minimum.

Part of the blood-soaked horror game series set on a tropical island overtaken by the undead, Dead Island Epidemic drops players into an online multiplayer battle arena.

Dead Island Epidemic is a fast-paced action MOBA taking place in a world infested with a zombie out-break, leaving those stuck in the chaos to scavenge for supplies, craft their own gear, and fight for survival. Players can choose from three types of survivors including mutated survivors who possess special “zombie” abilities and use their bodies as weapons. DIE currently features 2 main game modes, Scavenge and Crossroads.

The core mode of Dead Island Epidemic, Scavenge, pits 3 teams of 4 players against one another, challenging them to obtain supplies by capturing and successfully defending key supply points on the map, or by tackling large boss-like zombies which appear around the map.

A successful supply run can only be accomplished by clearing out infected areas as a team. Solo players may often find themselves overwhelmed by incoming zombie packs and must make sure not to find themselves caught between the enemy and the undead. The game focuses on teamplay!

Action game - just like in other representativeness of the species - observed from the air. The creators of the original hits kept climate cycle Dead Island, moving the event to the tropical jungle and the sunny beach. Colourful design visual layer successfully contrasts with the post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

Similar to Stunlock Studios other titled, Bloodline Champions, players will control their survivor using the WASD keys while aiming their swappable melee and ranged weapons using the mouse. In addition to light and heavy attacks, players also have their own special abilities which they can level up during the match.

Similar to the original Dead Island titles, players in Epdemic can craft their own weapons by collecting blueprints and scrap pieces randomly awarded after each match. These weapons have their own stats and can level up with use, opening up new passives for the weapon.

Decent, free production, which should be in your library of games.

Honestly, I never liked playing "MOBA" genre games. but damn, this game really hooked me up. Though, I hope the devs will put a real effort in commercializing the game and really put some work into it, not just stacking up new characters without adding any new maps or game modes. The community is very passionate on bringing up good ideas, why not hear them out? Either way it's a good game worth my 1000+ hours of gameplay (eventhough half of it is because I was waiting for the matchmaking que). The pvp/scavenger mode really made this game a worthwhile.

Kill zombies. Survive. Loot. Complete fetch quests. That's the core gameplay loop in Dead Island, a series that hasn't really proven itself yet but manages to sell really well anyway. As a result of the latter, publisher Deep Silver has announced a new MOBA based on the franchise. According to the publisher, the game will "pit three teams of players against each other in a desperate fight for survival." So don't expect a relaxing, non-intense fight for survival.
Deep Silver is set to reveal more at Gamescom later this month, as well as more news regarding "the Dead Island universe as a whole." If you're keen to play the Dead Island games then now is probably the best time to get on board: this month's Humble Bundle is Deep Silver themed, and if you pay more than the average pledge you get a free copy of Dead Island GOTY. Pay $25 or more and you'll also get Dead Island: Riptide. All up, nine games are included so best check it out .

Is a fun game, but gets very repetitive quick since you have to spend a gajillion hours ingame or spend real money to unlockmore than just a very few characters. I really hope they'll ditch this method for the sake of a long and successful run.

Funny little game. Unique weapons (funny designs), co-op pve and pvp. Very nice music. So far it is really entertaining. Levelling is not too fast, challenges so far challenging. It looks good indeed.

There is cash shopping involved though. And you gotta be prepared for some weapons/characters available by real cash purchase only.

My first impression of the game was it seemed too cliche as there are so many zombie-related videgames in the market nowadays. However, you really shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

I love this game simply because it has both co-op and PVP modes; something that always draws me in a game. Since it's still in beta mode, I cannot wait to play the actual finished product. So far I've had tons of fun, and it's always nice to level up and gain items for your character/s.

My only concern is that this game probably won't be as much fun as it is for me if you don't have someone to play it with (as with most games, really). Also, since it probably doesn't have a large demographic yet, sometimes the queue takes a while.

Overall, I would recommend this game to everyone who likes killing zombies with friends really.

Some people hate it, others love it: I count myself to the latter group, because DI:E offers quick matches, long-term motivation to craft new weapons and it gets quite challenging once you reach a certain level. It's both free and still in beta, so we get to see some nice patches in the future. Unlocking new characters needs quite some farming, but hopefully the prices will drop partially. So why not recommend it? Crafting a level 15 weapon would take around 10 hours of farming in PvE, whereas you could simply buy it with real money for less than 5€. Sounds fair? Not at all. Thanks for the 50 hours of free entertainment, but that's all I will spent in DI:E for now...

I wasn't sure about this game because I have never played a Dead Island game but I saw my husband and brothers bonding over it and it looked fun. My brother gave me a guest pass so that I could get in on it and I am really enjoying myself.

With friends its okay, alone... its just sad. The playerbase at the moment rather small, but its a good casual mobaexperience with some PvE twists, worth a shot if DOTA and LoL are getting on your nerves.

-Solid, fun combat (even if it's clunky at times).
-Did not feel at once like I was missing out on any portions of the game by not purchasing anything in the in-game store.

YET!
My god, is this a sad instance of a game where it seems as though everyone got burned out way too quickly. This game rarely ever sees a total player count of over 1000 (As of 2/28/2015) and that is a horrible injustice to the merits this game already is providing.

And don't let me get started on the matchmaking system, and the broken mess that it is in currently. To elaborate, I can only seem to find a game if the stars align perfectly with the Lord Almighty's b**er. And on the instances where I do find a game, myself and everyone else seems to have issues of being disconnected from the match; furthermore, to add insult to injury, if you abandon a match that you've have 'joined' you will be locked from matchmaking for 15 minutes[/b]. And since there is no way to play offline or without matchmaking, you're forced to just quit the game and do something else for that time, or just wait. This is a horrible practice, and I plead that the dev team works on this issue as soon as they can.

Though in the end, while this game is has one glaring problem, I still find myself wishing to recommend it. As this game certainly deserves to but up there with the more popular games that are in Early Acess.

tl;dr version: Download it.
