What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“There is no better way to gain valuable feedback and concrete suggestions than by allowing you guys to actually jump in and have at it so we decided that Steam Early Access is the best way for us to achieve this - just jump in, tear those zombies a new one (or two!) and we'll take care of the rest - or better yet, drop us a line and give us your feedback, we'd really appreciate it!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We've just hit open beta and we hope to be out of Early Access early next year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“As we've done so far we will continue to take your feedback and improve on the game, adding new features & modes that we see you guys will enjoy! We'll be re-balancing characters & weapons as we progress too, to make sure its the fairest experience with everyone.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game has just moved into Open Beta, bringing with it the first iteration of our brand new PvE mode: Crossroads which sees you and a three team mates set up camp in the morning and carry out four different randomly generated missions over the course of a day on ever changing maps. The missions range from freeing trapped survivors, gathering supplies, to fighting off hordes of zombies, defeating bosses and more.

Crossroads also awards and tracks your performance and scales the difficulty of the next mission accordingly. We've thrown some new zombie types into the mix as well and have added an all new zombie attribute system - from ranged damage resistance to faster running, harder hitting zombies, you will have to adapt how you fight the virus.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The open beta free to play with no purchase of early access packs now necessary to get access and we will continue this for the full game release later.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'd love to hear your feedback on this first version of Crossroads and as such we've added a link to a survey in the game, but as ever you can provide us with feedback on the Official Dead Island: Epidemic & Steam forums. We're continually working on adding new features & content and we’ll be constantly working on balancing and of course improving gameplay based on your feedback - along the way we’ll be intently listening to your suggestions, criticisms and as always: ideas for EVEN MOAR INSANE WEAPONS!”

Time to DI:E

Dead Island: Epidemic is a multiplayer action hack & slash arena. Players duke it out over supply points using an arsenal of crafted weaponry, a bevy of devastating powers, and good old-fashioned teamwork. And yeah, we've got zombies too - so there's that.

Co-Operate or Compete

It's you versus them. Or you versus them versus them versus them.

We’ve got two core modes – either team up with 3 other survivors and take on the zombie menace together in PvE co-op Crossroads mode, or take the fight to other players in our three-team "PvPvPvE" Scavenger mode where you'll battle it out in a competition to grab supplies, hold key points, outsmart the competition and blast through hordes of zombies.

Fight for your survival in our PvE-mode Crossroads. You set up camp in the morning and carry out four different missions over the course of a day in ever-changing maps and mission types. The missions range from freeing trapped characters and gathering supplies, to fighting off hordes of zombies or defeating bosses. Zombies have different attributes and change the way you fight them: From range-damage resistant to faster running, harder hitting zombies - you will have to adapt how you fight the virus.
Crossroads also rewards and tracks your performance, scaling the difficulty of the next mission accordingly.

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” – at least for a while

Epidemic’s PvP-mode pits three teams of 4 players each against each other in zombie-infested maps. The third team adds a new dynamic to this competitive mode and requires you to re-think your winning strategy: Do you build up enough of a lead to win before you are being dismantled by two teams? Or do you play it smart and align your goals with one of the adversary teams temporarily? The goal is to capture and hold strategic points and gather as many resources as possible to be victorious.

Combat

Take direct control of your character with the WASD keys plus mouse input and react to situations on the fly by switching between melee and ranged weapons.

Build and adjust weapons to your playstyle:

  • Earn blueprints from six different categories and build your weapon arsenal
  • Most weapons come with unique features and fit a specific role
  • You also earn weapon modifications which can be installed on to your weapons and add various attributes

From rotund, fanny-pack wearing badass tourists to redheads wielding weaponized crabs – and everything in between. Epidemic has a constantly expanding roster of unlikely heroes supporting varying play styles - whether you like your action up-close and personal, at range or through supporting your teammates.
Each character has an array of (often very bizarre) skills with which to wreak havoc - use these strategically in order to inflict maximum punishment on both the undead and those-you-want-to-be-dead.

Very cool game, I do wish it was a regular, pay $19 bucks and play everything, but at least at level 10 I haven't had to spend a dime and already have a few hours into it. I can see that probably changing, but so far, its been a blast, they mixed a few genre's together. I haven't done the PvP yet, I heard the match making takes a bit, but PvE has been fine.

If nothing else give yourself a cool 5 hour treat for free!

---- Update after 8 hours of play
I'll still leave it at a thumbs up, but it is getting really grindy after a while. There isn't enough gear, or enough variety, the stuff doesn't work differently enough, and it needs better pacing. I even had some of the bonus exp stuff from starting off, and it was still slow going and very repetative. This only has longevity through the grind if you have friend playing it, and if you, then you may enjoy it longer.

Totally entertaining! In the beginning the heroes are presented and you need to pick up one. After that you can fighting with zombies or other players, and when you have enough you might craft some items that can be used in the future, in example weapons. Music also has its own charm, personally I like it.
Big plus for optimalization. This is a open beta version, but I haven't experienced any nig craashes or lags yet.
I can highly recommend you trying it, especially if you like games based on co-operative elements with various game modes and you are interested how is that "ZOMBA" game like.

❥This is not a review. The reason is that you can read many reviews here and also it is a Free 2 Play game so you can just download it (Small Download) and try it out.

❥This is a review thought because i don't write reviews except if only really, really really like a game (with it's faults and bugs!).

❥This is...."General Guidelines on "How To Play" (Mini Survival Guide)":

☢Things you ought to know:

#1 rule of Fight Club is: you do not tal...no, wait...

#0.5 rule of survival is, this is not Single-Player Mode.

#1 rule of survival is, move as a Team. (Wait for your teammates before reaching an objective)

#2 rule of survival is, fight as a Team. (Together you are stronger!)

#3 rule of survival is, a target goes down faster if he is hit from multiple sources. (Sometimes in MMO's it is better to kill the weaker mobs/enemies first)

#4 rule of survival is, be aware of your surroundings. (Environment, Hazards etc.)

#5 rule of survival is, learn your enemies. (The better understanding of them you have, the easier you'll predict their moves/attacks and the easier you'll avoid them)

#6 rule of survival is, share supplies with teammates. (Equality in level provides better DPS outcome and a stronger team as a whole)

#7 Some characters fill roles. Learn that role and play accordingly. (Example, for a supporting character priority is to help teammates by applying CC/Heals and secondly DPS.)

#8 rule of survival is, be patient. (patient-adjective: able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious)

❥Well, wouldn't consider this a "Survival Guide" but it sure is something that will help everyone gaming experience.
Enjoy.

Some people hate it, others love it: I count myself to the latter group, because DI:E offers quick matches, long-term motivation to craft new weapons and it gets quite challenging once you reach a certain level. It's both free and still in beta, so we get to see some nice patches in the future. Unlocking new characters needs quite some farming, but hopefully the prices will drop partially. So why not recommend it? Crafting a level 15 weapon would take around 10 hours of farming in PvE, whereas you could simply buy it with real money for less than 5€. Sounds fair? Not at all. Thanks for the 50 hours of free entertainment, but that's all I will spent in DI:E for now...

I have only played this game a little bit however, I absolutely love it! It has got very good cartoony graphics (almost like TF2). I am not a big fan of zombie games but this is something different. There is a great single player, multiplayer and co-op. The game involves strategy and loads of FUN! Can't wait for the actual game (please don't make it expensive if it isn't F2P) 10/10 would recommend. :)

Early Access Review
Let me start off by saying the game is good, it is.
It has enough modes to keep the game interesting and not boring, a great variety of maps, really nice variety of characters to choose from with some awesome styles and mechanics, it's very noob friendly and has some nice and unique graphic and style to it.

BUT, although I do enjoy this game very much and will probably keep playing it, it has a major draw, at least in my opinion.
The shop and it's currency. There are two problems with it right now, one being with the ingame currency (the money you earn by playing game untill the end, AKA Character Points) and the outgame currency (the money you spent from your wallet, AKA Cash). The third currency is called Gear Points, its another ingame currency, used for crafting weapons and such, but its not as bad as the other too, actually its pretty decent.

So what is the problem with these two currencies?
The problem with the outgame currency (Cash) is that it is too damn expensive, for about 15$ you can buy 1 new character. Thats it. It really discourages people to support this game and it's developers and is a bit annoying. Especially considering the other main draw, the ingame currency for buying character.
So what is the problem with the ingame currency (Character Points) is that it is too damn hard to get, I mean, for a full game of about 10 to 15 minutes of gameplay I got around 70 character points, to compare, a new character costs 11,000 character points, after a simple math equation it would take me about 157 games to buy 1 new character.
That was worse before, they are trying a tiny bit to make it a bit easier but at the same time to not make it too easy, they also added a daily first win bonus for 2 of the main modes (3rd being the tutorial), but it is really giving you about nothing.

I also don't like how they are a bit lazy and don't write patch notes, I looked to the site and to the steam page alot of times, and they just don't write all the patch notes, they make very frequent patches (about 1 every week) and they release patch notes about once a month or even less.

In conclusion, the game is awesome and you should definitely try it out, even if you don't like MOBAs that much, this game gives a bit of a different feel to the MOBA genre.

I simply like it, but it has some problems in multiplayer when you play versus other teams
for example..
you need 800 points to win
-team1(yourteam)=780
-team2=700
-team3=100

well team1 or team2 will win and team3 will choose who will win, if team3 fights team2 team1 win, if team3 fights team1 team2 wins if team3 remains reutural team1 wins so there is no skill here its just luck..
devs goal was exactly this and congrats for triing and i still like it but its not perfect if you play for fun its good but after a while it ll get on your nerves. Devs have made missions pve and congrats for that but still it has problems people staying afk or trolling and making team lose valuable resources and waste time.
F2P+nice atmosphere, gameplay, fun>frustration i d give more than 7/10 so its nice game and its early access so far so good
