What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“There is no better way to gain valuable feedback and concrete suggestions than by allowing you guys to actually jump in and have at it so we decided that Steam Early Access is the best way for us to achieve this - just jump in, tear those zombies a new one (or two!) and we'll take care of the rest - or better yet, drop us a line and give us your feedback, we'd really appreciate it!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We've just hit open beta and we hope to be out of Early Access early next year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“As we've done so far we will continue to take your feedback and improve on the game, adding new features & modes that we see you guys will enjoy! We'll be re-balancing characters & weapons as we progress too, to make sure its the fairest experience with everyone.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game has just moved into Open Beta, bringing with it the first iteration of our brand new PvE mode: Crossroads which sees you and a three team mates set up camp in the morning and carry out four different randomly generated missions over the course of a day on ever changing maps. The missions range from freeing trapped survivors, gathering supplies, to fighting off hordes of zombies, defeating bosses and more.

Crossroads also awards and tracks your performance and scales the difficulty of the next mission accordingly. We've thrown some new zombie types into the mix as well and have added an all new zombie attribute system - from ranged damage resistance to faster running, harder hitting zombies, you will have to adapt how you fight the virus.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The open beta free to play with no purchase of early access packs now necessary to get access and we will continue this for the full game release later.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'd love to hear your feedback on this first version of Crossroads and as such we've added a link to a survey in the game, but as ever you can provide us with feedback on the Official Dead Island: Epidemic & Steam forums. We're continually working on adding new features & content and we’ll be constantly working on balancing and of course improving gameplay based on your feedback - along the way we’ll be intently listening to your suggestions, criticisms and as always: ideas for EVEN MOAR INSANE WEAPONS!”

Time to DI:E

Dead Island: Epidemic is a multiplayer action hack & slash arena. Players duke it out over supply points using an arsenal of crafted weaponry, a bevy of devastating powers, and good old-fashioned teamwork. And yeah, we've got zombies too - so there's that.

Co-Operate or Compete

It's you versus them. Or you versus them versus them versus them.

We’ve got two core modes – either team up with 3 other survivors and take on the zombie menace together in PvE co-op Crossroads mode, or take the fight to other players in our three-team "PvPvPvE" Scavenger mode where you'll battle it out in a competition to grab supplies, hold key points, outsmart the competition and blast through hordes of zombies.

Fight for your survival in our PvE-mode Crossroads. You set up camp in the morning and carry out four different missions over the course of a day in ever-changing maps and mission types. The missions range from freeing trapped characters and gathering supplies, to fighting off hordes of zombies or defeating bosses. Zombies have different attributes and change the way you fight them: From range-damage resistant to faster running, harder hitting zombies - you will have to adapt how you fight the virus.
Crossroads also rewards and tracks your performance, scaling the difficulty of the next mission accordingly.

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” – at least for a while

Epidemic’s PvP-mode pits three teams of 4 players each against each other in zombie-infested maps. The third team adds a new dynamic to this competitive mode and requires you to re-think your winning strategy: Do you build up enough of a lead to win before you are being dismantled by two teams? Or do you play it smart and align your goals with one of the adversary teams temporarily? The goal is to capture and hold strategic points and gather as many resources as possible to be victorious.

Combat

Take direct control of your character with the WASD keys plus mouse input and react to situations on the fly by switching between melee and ranged weapons.

Build and adjust weapons to your playstyle:

  • Earn blueprints from six different categories and build your weapon arsenal
  • Most weapons come with unique features and fit a specific role
  • You also earn weapon modifications which can be installed on to your weapons and add various attributes

From rotund, fanny-pack wearing badass tourists to redheads wielding weaponized crabs – and everything in between. Epidemic has a constantly expanding roster of unlikely heroes supporting varying play styles - whether you like your action up-close and personal, at range or through supporting your teammates.
Each character has an array of (often very bizarre) skills with which to wreak havoc - use these strategically in order to inflict maximum punishment on both the undead and those-you-want-to-be-dead.

Totally entertaining! In the beginning the heroes are presented and you need to pick up one. After that you can fighting with zombies or other players, and when you have enough you might craft some items that can be used in the future, in example weapons. Music also has its own charm, personally I like it.
Big plus for optimalization. This is a open beta version, but I haven't experienced any nig craashes or lags yet.
I can highly recommend you trying it, especially if you like games based on co-operative elements with various game modes and you are interested how is that "ZOMBA" game like.

Played this game way to much.. but it suits me well - u got 15-20 min, what do u do? - well.. (im more of the pve type in this but the pvp 4v4v4 is awesome aswell) the pve lvl's run up to a, i don't know, 10-20 min mini games - alot of weapons that really change your game play and ofc what char you take makes all the difference.. i prefer Hermann/Wanda/Charlie but im still not done gettin the rest - i started in beta but i think it's ok to lvl up atm and i get around 70-90 char points per game.. ohh allmost forgot, you can mod your weapons even, so go for what you like to play as - Melee or range - life leecher or crit.. you name it.. go for it.. Recommend this game if u like the small fun team work based games and ofc not to forget ZOMBIE KILLING!!
Cya ingame.

I have only played this game a little bit however, I absolutely love it! It has got very good cartoony graphics (almost like TF2). I am not a big fan of zombie games but this is something different. There is a great single player, multiplayer and co-op. The game involves strategy and loads of FUN! Can't wait for the actual game (please don't make it expensive if it isn't F2P) 10/10 would recommend. :)

Good thing abt this game:
1.Great Coop Mission
2.Great Gameplay
3.Insane PVP game mode

Bad thing abt this game:
1.Require good computer to play this game with great fps
2.Sometimes it is laggy as hell because the server is in EU
3.If you are not playing with friends expect someone to mess up your mission etc going the wrong way, solo dive in and die most of the time

I would recommend people to play this,it is really fun and impossible to rage at

80 Hours in. Great Game.

Potential? Plenty.

Playerbase? Existant. Could be more plentiful but the game is still in beta if that is any consolation.

Grind? Yes. No doubting it.

Big grind? Not at all!

I'll put it simply, when this game is 'on' and your in the heat of battle, you absolutely love it. It is an addicting game in and of it's self. Which is a very good sign of a quality game.
When you get loot, gear points, char. points, more account level XP & 3 gold Stars with a decent team, you love that feeling. And you jump right back in to earn more.

It is only when you don't, does the 'feeling' of 'grind' begin to set in.

However when you start the game does SOO much to help you level up quickly and it rewards your character with sooo many items regularly.

It's not a grind - it's a glide.

However, it is a FREE-to-Play game. And if you WANT to Pay that is entirely up to you. It isn't at all necessary to do so. You can unlock ~70-80% of characters without paying; and those that you can't unlock will likely become unlockable in the near future.

You always have enough earned in-game cred. to purchase consumable items in the shop to use in battle (but you don't even need those items! cause u get them automatically from the game when u loot your earned supply at the end of the game!!! :D xD )

All-in-all it is a great game with MUCH potential but it needs a greater playerbase.

So, it is up to YOU to decide if I'm right or not.

It's free. Click that button up there ^. Download. Play. And decide if it's what you like.

+ I like it, especially playing with friends makes it more enjoyable. Good game for monkeying around.
+ Crafting new weapons, trying different builds on a character, learning skill combos. Yey, it is fun!
- Though it needs more updates (fixing bugs, new maps, matchmaking system etc.), but oh well.

You should take a look at it, it needs new players too -,,-

Dead Island: Epidemic is a great little game full of fun, simple and full of action, Its has Co-op and Versus Modes.
The versus mode being 2 teams of Humans and then the Zombies trying to kill both teams while the teams go at
each other and fight over resources.
It has 54 Achievments for thoughs of you that like the extra challenge of collecting them. It has nice graphics and
sounds (idk about sound track!)
Overall its a nice looking and fun game to play with 4-8 friends while kicking some Zombie Butt 6/10

Although it is Free2Play it comes with a Number of Micro-Transactions, the DLC is priced as
Dead Island: Epidemic - No-Brainer Pack - £1.99
Dead Island: Epidemic - Armored Pack - £14.99
Dead Island: Epidemic - Mutated Pack - £24.99
Total: £41.97 but as you can see the total price of the DLC adds up to a little over the price of an average game so
you could consider it "Pay as you Play!" plus there are in-game purchases using in-game currency that is gained just by playing (Skins etc.)

Warning: This is in Early Access and subject to change as development continues.
Dispite it being Early Access I have see nothing in the way of game breaking bugs
and very few bugs in general, but note I have played it very little
(Im not a fan games with this viewing angle!)

A fun MOBA-type game in the Dead Island setting.

There's a rich multiplayer PvE (4 players vs. the zombies) aspect in this game, something rare which I really appreciate having in a game of this type, This PvE aspect is called the Crossroads, and consists of a series of random missions, culminating in killing a big boss.

The PvP part of this game (called Scavenger) is three teams of four players against each other and the zombies. It's more fun than the traditional 2-teams-with-weak-creeps style in your typical MOBA. There's a lot more opportunity for shifting loyalties, and a choice of whether to gang up on the zombies, or gang up on another team. Or whether you just want to grab supplies and run like the devil to get them home.

Rewards from PvE and PvP matches are both usable in both kinds of match. If you're not strong against other players, there's still plenty of game for you.

The crafting system lets you customize your loadout to tune for a particular aspect you want to focus on, or to cover a weakness in your character's basic makeup. The bonuses aren't huge, but choosing the ones you want to use can really help you get just the kind of play you're looking for. In some matches, I want to focus on damage. In some, I want to focus on defending myself. In others, I want to be the most efficient at grabbing the supplies and getting them home (a victory condition in the PvPvPvE Scavenger). Some characters have a natural affinity for some weapon modifiers, and these stack nicely.

Dead Island: Epidemic is a wonderful game to play with friends. I also very much enjoy the variety of characters and weapons. But, even if I wouldn't consider this game "grinding simulator 2015" I do have to say that getting character points is sort of repetitive and hard work. That much said, I think one main improvement the game needs when it's updated or adjusted somewhat is the matchmaking waiting times (also, yes I do know this game is in beta so this should be expected). This game is really fun. It's good attributes make up for the sometimes awful matchmaking waiting times, Crossroads can be played millions of times yet it still is fun, and everything about it is just... well, wonderful. The game gives a good feel in general and I highly reccomend it to people that play things like Dota or League of Legends.
One last thought: When the game is updated, character models should be a bit more polished. I would also enjoy to see different characters having different stance appearances when holding weapons.

Great game.. You can see by the hours I have in the game how much I like it. Down load and play it.

Negatives: certain characters are way Over Powered.. Either that or people are just plain hacking.

Match making: Ehhh, Its ok but again it tends to build OP team in Multi.. Maybe its just pre-mades but they need to tweak that.

Weapons, take forever to drop (useful ones) and then more forever to be able to unlock them.
