The game is currently in closed beta and fully-functional. You’ll find that we're already offering a polished & solid experience that's a ton of fun, however due to the nature of it being in beta please be aware that there may still be some bugs (help us catch 'em all!) and unfinished features. FYI: The zombie A.I is not a bug though, they're supposed to be a bit brainless - it's in their nature.
There is no better way to gain valuable feedback and concrete suggestions than by allowing you guys to actually jump in and have at it so we decided that Steam Early Access is the best way for us to achieve this - just jump in, tear those zombies a new one (or two!) and we'll take care of the rest - or better yet, drop us a line and give us your feedback, we'd really appreciate it!
The Early Access Starter packs that we are currently offering are intended for those who want to get into the zombie bashing early and to help us shape the future of the game. They also of course offer players a great starting kit and will grant a few nice exclusive perks - both right away, and when the game hits official open beta and later again at the full launch.

  • Doctor Bauer is a new narrator and the guy that is mainly responsible for coordinating missions in Crossroads!
Progression System Overhaul
  • Levels for individual characters have been removed: there is now a global character level. Unlocks apply to each character once you reach a new level
  • New account progression rewards have been added
    • All permanent unlocks will be handed out to users who have already bypassed these rewards
  • Reaching the late-game content will now be faster overall and you earn more Gear Points to spend on your new weapons!
Crafting Overhaul
  • The weapon leveling system has been removed and is being replaced with a new modification system
    • Modifications allow you to customize your weapons to better fit your needs and playstyle!
  • The weapon tiers have been increased from 6 to 16
  • Crafting weapons are no longer restricted by the workbench-level
    • Loot drops are now based on your character strength. Increasing your character strength by leveling up your account and by crafting new weapons will lead to a higher infection level and thus better loot
  • All weapon-stats have been rebalanced
  • New weapons can now be dropped
  • Almost all legendary weapons have a unique perk and a more defined role
Passive Skills
  • The weapon expertise on all characters has been removed and is replaced by a passive skills
  • You can now choose whatever weapon you like and customize it to your character and playstyle using the modification system
Loot System Rework
  • Smarter drop system with guaranteed drops and less randomness
    • The more games you play without receiving blueprints the higher the chance of receiving a loot-drop
  • Weapon-types are also distributed more evenly. If you have not received a certain weapon-type for a long time you will have an increased chance to receive that weapon-type
  • Duplicate blueprints are now transformed into account experience points
    • The Gear Point income has been re-balanced to accustom the new progression
  • As character levels and weapon levels are removed we are also removing the unbound experience part of the game. Everyone who spent cash to unbind XP gets compensated with Cash
  • With the big crafting rework and the many weapon changes we are also compensating all users who have converted Cash into Gear Points by giving back 50% of Cash spent on the Cash to Gear Point conversion
Scout Missions Rework
  • All Scout Missions have been reworked into single player missions
    • Each mission has a unique objective
  • All three new Scout Missions are now part of the starter quest
New Enemy Types
  • A new classification has been added: Infected. Infected-type zombies are stronger than Walkers but weaker than special-zombies.
  • Elite Walkers are now named Veterans and their classification has changed from Walker to Infected
  • The Suicider is a new Special enemy that will blow itself up along with you and your allies!
  • The Runner is a new Infected enemy that will chase you down and whack you in the back when trying to flee
  • The Spitter is a new Infected enemy that spits acid-goo (beware of large groups of Spitters!)
  • All Massive zombies have been re-balanced and updated
Crafting Details
  • All weapons have had their stats re-balanced
  • Some weapons have a different rarity than before
  • Several perks has been removed from weapons. These perks have been changed into modifications
  • The required parts have been re-balance
    • The amount of different parts have been reduced to 10
    • Parts are reused over several weapon tiers
  • Gadgets have their stats adjusted to fit the new crafting changes

Progression, Crafting and Loot Changes
Account leveling now fully incorporates the character progression. Leveling your weapons has been removed, with customization in the form of modifications added. Weapon expertises have been replaced with a passive ability. The loot system is less random with higher drop chances.

In addition to developing Crossroads we’ve been busy with changes to the progression, crafting and loot system. There’s a lot of stuff to talk about so be prepared for a lot of information! Let’s start with how the account progression has changed.

Account Progression Changes

The big news for account progression is that individual character leveling outside of matches has been removed! There will be no need to unlock the skills of each character separately; instead, all individual character progression has been moved into account progression. This means that new characters bought will have the same skills and augmentations available as the character you previously played, and that you’ll be able to change characters when playing with friends without lowering your strength or downgrading weapons. The change will result in improved matchmaking as you won’t have to face less skilled opponents because you changed character.

In addition there will be more rewards while leveling your account. The character unlocks have been moved into the account progression; when an augmentation for the Q-skill is unlocked, it’s for all characters. More consumables will also be handed out when you level your account; currencies have been removed as specific level rewards. The overall progression has been sped up to decrease the grind. Finally, specific modifications will be unlocked in the account progression. What are modifications? Well, that leads us to the…

Crafting System Overhaul

Weapon leveling along with workbench levels have been removed! With the new changes crafting a weapon will put it at its full potential and you’ll be able to craft and use it at the appropriate account level. The amount of weapon tiers has also been increased to make crafting an almost constant progression. As you progress towards the end-game content you’ll get to craft and customize lots of weapons. The new tiers will also smooth out the matchmaking as differences between tiers will be less significant.

Since character levels and leveling weapons will be removed, Unbound XP will disappear. Following that we will of course compensate every user that has paid to unbind XP with an equivalent amount of in-game Cash.

So what are modifications and what does it mean that you’ll be able to customize weapons? We were not satisfied with the feeling of crafting in the current system; in the new system you will be able to collect modifications. Modifications (or mods for short) are permanent unlocks similar to blueprints. An unlocked mod can be used on any weapon that has a suitable modification slot. Each mod has a unique effect. Here’s a few quick examples:

  • Bounty Hunter - Killing an enemy awards you with 5 supplies.
  • Scratch Shield - Damage taken from Walkers reduced by 10%
  • Acrobatics - You have a 30% chance to reset dodge cooldown when dodge is used.

This new modification system will grant an additional layer of depth to crafting. Some weapons have an additional innate modification that goes along with that weapon; a weapon perk. All Legendary weapons will have their own weapon perk unique to that weapon for example.

Additionally, we’ve both rebalanced tons of weapons and changed how stats works with them. Power and Vitality have been merged into a single stat. This change adds a clear difference between weapon tiers, and will balance out Glass Cannon/Tank builds a bit. The secondary stats, the weapon perks and the modifications will now determine if a weapon is offensive, defensive or a utility weapon. Passive Abilities

Characters will no longer have weapon expertises; instead each character has a passive ability. This is to encourage you to use the weapon you feel the most comfortable with when playing a character instead of feeling forced to use certain weapons. Have fun customizing whatever weapon you want to fit your own play style, regardless of which character you play! You’ll get more weapons to choose from than ever before thanks to the...

Loot System Changes

The loot system will now consider your previous drops; if you haven’t gotten a specific weapon type for a while you will have a higher chance of getting that type. The randomness of the system has also been decreased overall, as there will be guaranteed drops if you haven’t received a blueprint or a modification for some time. At the same time, the general chance for receiving blueprints has been increased. If you receive a duplicate blueprint, that blueprint will be automatically converted into Account XP. As a final note, the amount of Gear Points awarded has also been doubled to encourage, among other things, more crafting and customization of weapons.

That was the final reveal. Look forward to Crossroads and these changes coming to Dead Island: Epidemic in the next few weeks!

Dead Island: Epidemic is a multiplayer action hack & slash free to play game. Players will duke it out over supply points using an arsenal of crafted weaponry, a bevy of devastating powers, and good old-fashioned teamwork. And yeah, we've got zombies too - so there's that.

Co-Operate or Compete

It's you versus them. Or you versus them versus them versus them.

We’ve got two core modes – either team up with 3 other survivors and take on the zombie menace together in PvE co-op Crossroads mode, or take the fight to other players in our three-team "PvPvPvE" Scavenger mode where you'll battle it out in a competition to grab supplies, hold key points, outsmart the competition and blast through hordes of zombies.

Fight for your survival in our PvE-mode Crossroads. You set up camp in the morning and carry out four different missions over the course of a day in ever-changing maps and mission types. The missions range from freeing trapped characters and gathering supplies, to fighting off hordes of zombies or defeating bosses. Zombies have different attributes and change the way you fight them: From range-damage resistant to faster running, harder hitting zombies - you will have to adapt how you fight the virus.
Crossroads also rewards and tracks your performance, scaling the difficulty of the next mission accordingly.

“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” – at least for a while

Epidemic’s PvP-mode pits three teams of 4 players each against each other in zombie-infested maps. The third team adds a new dynamic to this competitive mode and requires you to re-think your winning strategy: Do you build up enough of a lead to win before you are being dismantled by two teams? Or do you play it smart and align your goals with one of the adversary teams temporarily? The goal is to capture and hold strategic points and gather as many resources as possible to be victorious.


Take direct control of your character with the WASD keys plus mouse input and react to situations on the fly by switching between melee and ranged weapons.

Build and adjust weapons to your playstyle:

  • Earn blueprints from six different categories and build your weapon arsenal
  • Most weapons come with unique features and fit a specific role
  • You also earn weapon modifications which can be installed on to your weapons and add various attributes

From rotund, fanny-pack wearing badass tourists to redheads wielding weaponized crabs – and everything in between. Epidemic has a constantly expanding roster of unlikely heroes supporting varying play styles - whether you like your action up-close and personal, at range or through supporting your teammates.
Each character has an array of (often very bizarre) skills with which to wreak havoc - use these strategically in order to inflict maximum punishment on both the undead and those-you-want-to-be-dead.

Welcome to Mad Island Epidemic, where you can meet people of all nations and tell them what do you think about them, their skills or their country. Even LoL cannot compare with DI:E unbalanced characters! Make sure to quickly buy Sam B and Frosted pipe heavy weapon to be the most brutal and fearsome schoolboy in Amaia island!
The best and playable mode in this game is the Scavenger, where you put your 1337 skills in action. There are three teams, 4x4x4 players, and only one team will win by fully filling the supplies meter. Use your ultimate abilities on zombies as much as you can, because other enemy players is no threat to you - (c) (Approved by public randoms and premades). You see the enemy team winning and almost filled the meter? Well screw them, you can cooperate with the third team, and get the last chance to steal the winning team supplies from their own base, and get yourself reported for griefing, because cooperation with enemy team is forbidden! Wooh, this is so exciting!
What? Did you just get into the 3-survivor-Amber-team? Dont think that you are fukt yet, because this game is so unpredictable - enemy teams may fight each others to proove themself whose deek is bigger, while you can sneaky steal all supplies and win the round with awesome phrase "gg ez"!

I shall divide this into 2 parts: pre-0.6.2 patch and post-0.6.2 patch (current)

Pre-0.6.2 Patch

- While many people complain it's a pay-2-win game, it's not. None of the premium weapons available in the Shop, currency boosts or packs bought as part of the game leaned towards helping one win in the PvP aspect.
- Each of the legendary weapons in the game have their own unique characteristics which provide a specific build for certain characters.
- Nearly all of the characters are balanced relatively, except for Charlie, which has been added latest prior to the patch.

- As mentioned above, Charlie is not very balanced.
- There are only 2 servers, in North America (USA) and Europe (Germany). Both servers are located in the northen hemisphere. This brings trouble for players playing from the southern hemisphere. Also, players from all 207 countries share these 2 servers.
- Game development is slow, with only a couple of bugs fixed in every session of server maintenance.

Post-0.6.2 Patch

- Charlie has been nerfed, but still needs more rebalance.
- Modifications added provide a new different playstyle.

- The rebalance of the legendary weapons and addition of the new ones have made them lose their uniqueness and genuinity. For example, all legendaries now have the same power rating, with attributes varying across one another. On the other hand, however, some weapons have been buffed which is a good thing.
- Latency for players with bad ping have become worse. Game has generally become more ping-dependent. Both servers have an equal amount of lag.
- The addition of Crossroads adds a new difficulty to the game, with its focus of playstyle to slot in between the PvE and PvP aspects, new players can find themselves struggling to play well. In addition, the average length of a Crossroads mission is 25 - 30 minutes, which is fairly long compared to the once-existed horde missions (10 - 15 minutes). This means that if players choose to play a short round they have to play the starter missions which will provide far less reward value than Crossroads and Scavenger (PvP). The narrator of crossroads, Dr Bauer, has a fairly depressing tone.
- Consumables cannot be sold for gear points. Some of them can't be bought from the Shop and can only be earned through levelling up account level. The number of consumables have increased to 32, but there's only 3 consumable slots available for each character. There's no way you're going to spend them all, even if you tried.
- I feel the game is moving more towards the PvP aspect of every MOBA game than about zombies.

Personal Thoughts
- I hope the developers can use this as reference to decide on what to change and what features to add in the coming updates. Currently the game is still in the beta stage and however it may improve, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

This game is sexy. All i can say is try not to create alot of items. only make the ones with the best perks and save up for teir 6. I dont mind the$10 i put into this game because ive had so much fun teaming up with others to knock down a boss with my sweet gear. i worked for my stuff big time. toons ive unlocked fit my play style nicely. It was never needed to send money and thankfully never ruined the game. they keep adding new stuff and toons for me to unlock so no problem there.

I'm not a big moba fan. I came for the co op. i'm more at home with pvp in a third person/first person kind of game but still like co op in those too, somtimes moreso. Thats why i screemed for joy when i first herd that the devs where talking about adding more Pve content because there was alot more people than they expected enjoying the pve from the game like i was!

It would be sexy if one day they made a mode where your group members have only one life and try to escape the island, or die trying. I guess I can settle with their idea though till some better game comes along or the devs give up trying to make the lot of us all convert to pvp. :D

People downvoting it because of p2w content , do not either know how to play , or have not played the game at all , i am 12 hours in , and this game is fantastic !! Theres a bit of a grind , but the loot is satisfying , also the cash part of the in game currency that has to be bought with real money is entirely optional , its used for unbinding xp ( will be removed in next november update ) and buying booster packs( completely optional , and in game progression is balanced , so unless you want it too easy you dont NEED those packs ) . Character points used to buy new characters , takes time to accumulate , but it will take a while for you to reach level 20 ( highest ATM ) with your starter character anyways . Gear points , used to buy missing parts and consumables comes in tons , each game will net you about 1k-2k points easily .

There are 3 types of modes as of right now :-

1) Scout , the solo horde mode
2) Horde mode , the co-op vs AI mode
3) Scavenger , the Team PvP game

Scavenger games are kinda tough to find , takes 10-15 minutes sometimes , but horde games are usually found within 2-3 minutes .

Movement is not mouse based like DOTA , but WASD , mouse is only used for attacking . This game is kind of like if DOTA and Diablo had a child :P . The skills are all balanced , and the gameplay feels fresh , plus theres zombies ... you can never get bored from killing zombies XD !!!

Graphics wise , its good looking and optimization is good as well so it should be playable on low end rigs as well .

The maps IMO are too less atm , but since its in early access beta right now , im sure they will add in more maps later on

Really looking forward to the november upgrade !!

Definetely recommend this free little gem to anyone who like MOBA's .

---------------------AFTER PATCH EDIT-------------------------------

Horde mode has been completely replaced by Crossroads now , and scout missions have been replaced by a sort of singleplayer tutorial ..

Crossroads games take place in a big map(like scavenger maps) , and every time you are assigned different randomly generated missions , and your performance is graded by Gold/Silver/Bronze stars .
You can also fail these missions , which will result in less score and supplies , therefore giving less loot at the end .

Well the new crossroads mode certainly adds more replayability to a certain degree , however i think its too unbalanced ..

Sometimes its too easy , but sometimes it too difficult !!
And by too difficult i mean 3 mega rams charging at you while spitters throw their venom around !!
The rewards have been bumped up by quite a lot as well , although im still finding less variety in blueprint drops ...

Also , i cannot find a single Scavenger game anymore , both in the EU as well as the NA region , i do not know whether this is happening to everyone or is mainly affecting SEA users .

Hope they fix these issues up real soon !! :(

And Horde mode should be back as well , Crossroads should instead replace the Heroic Horde mode.

Also I dont know whether the devs read these reviews , but a sort of arena mode would be kinda cool , where you face endless waves of zombies , and how long you survive decides the rewards you recieve .

My friend sent this game, so I gave a chance to that game and ... man, that game is EPIC ! After first mission (it was tutorial btw) I was addicted to it. Zombie games never get old and boring, it has got pretty solid graphic and good multiplayer, which is main domain of this game.
Only thing I don´t like about it is that it takes long time to find "Scavenger" mode, but classic "Horde Mission" mode game is found during few seconds.

Very addictive game. its strange cause for now in game only 2 mode (pve and pvp) and 2 maps (again one for pve and one for pvp). 17 champions (some very expensive - 17000 champion points when for one game u usually get like 120. but some only 1600). and u doing same thing over and over again... but you want to. and you log in game over and over again. i recommend it.
вообще игра хоть и в бете и имеет всего 2 карты, но вызывает жуткое привыкание. уже сейчас около 17 героев в игре, которых можно купить за внутреигровую валюту. некоторые стоят конечно заоблочно (такие как Сэм Б - 17 тысяч... это при условии что за одну игру обычно получешь около 120) но есть и стартовые за 1680. как обычно большинство героев делятся на танка, дпс и хиллера. вы начинаете уровень вместе с 3 другими игроками в ценртре карты (на базе) где мужик в кепке дает вам задания в разные концы карты (грубо говоря тут 4 "конца карты" и в каждую сторону вы получаете по заданию. по сути они идентичны "сходи принеси груз" "сходи убей зомбака крутого и принеси груз" "сходи вскрой бункер и принеси оттуда груз") пока вы бежите до места на вас отовсюду лезут зомби. вы их мочите, получаете уровень. прокачиваетесь (система скилов и прокачки взята полностью из таких МОБА как дота и лол). зомбаков становится еще больше. в общем весело, не напряжно. да еще и бесплатно. очень советую попробовать всем любителям МОБА, и рпг типа диабло.
если игру разрабы не забросят. добавят еще хотя бы пару карт и будут добавлять героев, то будущее у нее очень радужное.
PS немного советов. не спещите сразу покупать за геройские очки (в виде руки) новых героев. поиграйте побольше посмотрите как другие игроки играют разными героями (посмотрите в магазине какие скилы у каких героев). и уже под себя выберете героя. потому что внутриигровая валюта сыпется также скудно как и в ЛОЛ. со временем выбьете конечно всех, но поначалу если (как мой друг) сольете валюту на героя не под свой стиль игры то может быть скучновато выбивать на следующего.
плюс опять же не советую крафтить все оружие подряд. поначалу будет сыпаться кучу шлака (которое не чуть не лучше стартового оружия). дождитесь тира 7-8 хотя бы. там уже появляются шмотки и с перками и круче по урону.

Really slow leveling up and lack of content (At least for me).
Its fun with friends tho , feels kinda repetitive so its gets boring quickly.

pre recent patch i loved this game grinding for mats to make weapons and blueprints drop .. chars were pigeon holed with certain weapons BUT some of them skills could be ignored for better dps / mobility the horde mode (pve) both normal and heroic was very simple to play and easy to grasp bascially i would have recommended it easily - HOWEVER - since the new patch 6 somthing, they have changed the game .. weapons now have mods to either unlock with acct lvl or / and buy with gear points to install, a big ball ache tbh all the weaps after u lvl'd them up pre patch had 'other' abilities, more life tap more crit etc etc now they have a almost generic and very flat base stats which then u need the 'mods' to make them better.

also the new 'pve' gamemode is nothing short of a cluser♥♥♥♥ pvp map rehashed and unlimited zombies allowed onto it while the group (hopefully) runs off in the right direction towards 3 objectives after each u have to deliver 'supplies' just like in pvp .... and do this to a time limit .. not only are the zombies dmg increased they add new ones (cool) shame they ruined the mode though, our weaps as said are now considerably weaker ... whole playstyles of chars has changed its a massive change .. and has made a big divide in the closed beta players quite a few of my friends have just stopped due to this patch ...

overall people will like it others that have been playing for ages might not each to their own but as it stands now i do not recommend it.

The game isn't horrible but its not fun after spending several hours grinding and then seeing a person with a paid buff wreck you in one second. Some people might think that buying experience buffs, characters, or weapons with in-game cash or real money does not give themselves an advantage. Well it does in this game. On top that the crafting system is tied to your account and without the buffs, leveling your characters and account takes several days, if not weeks.

You can buy everything with in-game cash and that is how the game is suppose to play. I can play for two hours so I can craft a level 1 weapon or I could buy $5 of in-game cash to make all level 1 weapons. The rewards at the end of each game are horrible and unrewarding. Would I rather get two or three crafting materials for each game and have to play 5 or 6 games to make one weapon than just spend $5. Money is the ultimate goal of Dead Island: Epidemic.

The game was fun and it felt promising in the beginning, but once you see your rewards for each game and the players that bought boosts or weapons, the game becomes stale. Make the game even for everyone by either making it truly Free-to-Play (with dlc maps or pay-to-win players vs pay-to-win players) or have everyone pay a resonable price for the game with no paid buffs, characters, or weapons.

Why is the game now Early Access? It's still in the Free-to-Play category of Steam.

NOT another Dota/Superhero pay2win clone.
This game is pure fun and is never getting boring. If you play the game for the first time it feels and looks very similar to other games (as i write in the headline). But after some more matches you will see that this game has his own gameplay and rules. The characters (not the beginner chars) are all good balanced and depends on your skill/team. With the feedback of the community Stunlock Studios brings updates from time to time with new heros, gadgets, items and new fresh gamemodes (Pve/Pvp). If you like tactical team based gameplay play it! I really recommend this game.

Have to either unplug my pc or crash my pc Just to close it, has a few bugs that cause my pc to go crazy but i love the game.
