Buy SD45 Southern Pacific

About This Content

The six-axle, 20 cylinder EMD SD 45 is now available for Train Simulator in Southern Pacific livery.

Its powerful engine and versatility made the EMD SD 45 a popular class of locomotive among US railroads. Capable of producing 3,600hp, it was equally at home heading freight and passenger trains, but was primarily used to haul high-speed freight and intermodal services. More than 1,200 of the class were built between 1965 and 1971 with some remaining in service today.

The EMD SD 45 for Train Simulator, developed by DigitalTrainModel, is available in Southern Pacific livery and features opening cab doors and windows, accurate sounds, working brake animations, extensive locomotive lighting and power selector.

The locomotive is also Quick Drive compatible, giving you the freedom to drive the EMD SD 45 on any Quick Drive enabled route for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam. Also included are scenarios specifically for the Donner Pass route (available separately and required to play these scenarios).

Five scenarios for the Donner Pass route:

  • EMD SD45SP Intro
  • From Roseville to Colfax
  • Short freight to Sparks Yard
  • Switching in the Rain
  • The Follower
More scenarios are available on Steam Workshop online and in-game. Train Simulator’s Steam Workshop scenarios are free and easy to download, adding many more hours of exciting gameplay. With scenarios being added daily, why don’t you check it out now!

One of my all time favorites in Train Simulator! Digital Train Model (DTM) did a great job on the all SD45s and especially this one! It's quality rivals that of most DTG locomotives. The real SD45s served for many years on the Southern Pacific and many other railroads making it possible to use the SD45 in many different eras across the parts of the SP system made available by DTG. While this DLC is intended for use on Donner Pass it can be put to work on many routes. Suchs as; Soldier Summit after the D&RGW-SP merger of 1988. Sherman Hill after the 1996 merger of the SP and UP, for when it was a commonplace to see motive power and rolling stock from both railroads. Cajon Pass before the UP-SP merger when the UP started to replace SP motive power on Cajon Pass and the newly formed BNSF replaced ATSF motive power. The Adriana County freeware route created by LtBligh, although intended for UP-BN use, a creative scenario author can put the SD45s and many other SP units to work on the Adriana County. And of course, Donner Pass, in many eras, it was common to see the SD45s climbing and descending the steep grades of Donner from the mid-1960s until the late 1990s.

Here's a list of pros and cons of the SP SD45.

- Decent sounds.
- Good exterior and interior models.
- Cab Control functionality, all primary controls work and most switches and buttons work too. The windows and doors can also open and close.
- Many scenario possibilities across many routes and from many eras.
- The SD45 also works great with a RailDriver, but there is a small problem with it though, when the selector is set to power, the RailDriver throttle does not function correctly, though it does function correctly when the selector is set on off.

- Exterior and interior textures are not so hot but are not so bad that they ruin the DLC.
- Train brake applies and releases too quickly and is unrealistically intense.

Final verdict: A great DLC that rivals the quality of many DTG locomotives and is also a personal favorite of mine and many others. Proceed with making your purchase!

This is a great add-on. The model looks great, the scenarios are nice, and everything else is great, too. Highly recommended for people who have the Donner Pass add-on.

This engine has great sounds, very powerful and is a classic. The cars have a...strange... braking glitch, but other than that its pretty good.

This unit is a great loco. A very nice addition to a nice route. It has a character all to itself. It's got great texture and stands out on Donner. It's a 9.8 out of 10 loco. The only flaw is it stands out to much.
