"One of the only "minimal gameplay" games I've ever enjoyed. A "walking simulator" with a great sense of humour that mocks game design intelligently."

Reviews

“It's not the fact that The Stanley Parable makes you think about the nature of choice in games that makes it extraordinary. It's the fact that it does so while simultaneously managing to be a wildly entertaining, hilarious, and surprising experience.”
9/10 - Gamespot

“It's this bouncing between serious tone and irreverence that makes The Stanley Parable so special. You never know what to expect."
10/10 - Joystiq

“Where so many games that aspire to be more than games end up less than any form of art, Stanley Parable strives, and then succeeds.”
10/10 - Destructoid

“Astoundingly labyrinthine onion-like layers of narrative tangents the player can embark on in what feels like the unholy interactive offspring of Inception, Being John Malkovich and Portal.”

About This Game

The Stanley Parable is a first person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end. Contradiction follows contradiction, the rules of how games should work are broken, then broken again. This world was not made for you to understand.

But as you explore, slowly, meaning begins to arise, the paradoxes might start to make sense, perhaps you are powerful after all. The game is not here to fight you; it is inviting you to dance.

Based on the award-winning 2011 Source mod of the same name, The Stanley Parable returns with new content, new ideas, a fresh coat of visual paint, and the stunning voicework of Kevan Brighting. Possibly one of the strangest and greatest games ever made.

This is a story about a man named Stanley ... but honestly it really is a story about a Narrator and the exquisite mental torture he puts you through trying to figure out why. 'Why what?' I hear you ask. No! Just simply 'why'. A question you will constantly ask yourself, and probably never answer well enough to feel satisfied.

So what is the game? Well you play Stanley, who works in an office. And one day Stanley realises everyone else has disappeared and it is up to him to find out why ... or is it? You see the problem with describing this game is whilst there are many different endings, none of them seem to be 'the right one', or perhaps all of them are.

Yes I realise this review is not even slightly helpful in undertand what this game is, and wether or not you should buy it. So here it is: Buy this game and play it! It is something that everyone should experience. Love it or hate it .... you really should try it.

Stanley enjoyed The Stanley Parable so much that he decided to write a positive review. He wrote:

"This game is good."

Then Stanley clicked the thumbs up button for the review. His review was so descriptive, so interesting, so inspiring, so amazing that he almost didin't have the heart to post it due to it being such a fantastic review. So Stanley instead clicked the thumbs down button for the review, which made his entire review make absolutley no sense at all, but he posted it anyway. After he posted his review, he realized that everyone in his workplace was missing, so Stanley-

The Stanley Parable is a narrative story that stars, you guessed it, Stanley. Stanley works in a dead end job carrying out mindless tasks; and the story is told by one of the best narratives I have ever heard. Graphics isn't an important feature here, but that being said, it looks really nice.

The design of the world is very well done, you are essentially in an office building, but it does a very clever thing where you can sometimes be walking around in a circle, and then all of a sudden the world changes, and you are somewhere else. This made the experience feel more real to me. You can make this game as easy or as difficult as you want. There is fifteen different stories and endings to the Stanley Parable, each of them is amazingly written, probably one of, if not the best story in gaming I've experienced and well worth playing. It has taken me almost seven hours to play through all of the endings, and do all but one of the achievements. After you have played all of the endings though, there is probably no need to go replay any of the game again.

Is the game worth £9, 99, sure? For about seven hours of gameplay and the amount of fun I had playing it; you cannot miss out on The Stanley Parable. This is now in my top ten favourite games of all time.

This game offers more than just enjoyment, It offers and experience that no other game can offer you. This is definitely one of the more creative games I've seen until now. It's so unique and will f*** with your mind at first. If you go into it with an open mind, you will come out with an amazing experience, with a profound message backed by a brilliant and intriguing soundtrack. It has some funny moments, full of surprises and references. You will play it for max 5-6 hours and it has ZERO replay value once you've finish it all, but it deserves to be played at least once by everybody.

P.S.
The end is never the end...

I went inside the janitor's closet and simply stood there for a good 5 minutes
until the game reset, so i went back to the janitor's closet and stood there
for another 5 minutes and the game restarted again, so i went back to the janitor's
closet a third time and it was bordered up with planks of wood nailed to the door. I could no
longer enter the janitor's closet:( And at that very moment, i stopped playing.

It's a fantastic game with 1,000's of possible endings and is worth a buy in my books.
The Stanley Parable - 9/10 (P.S. Does anyone have a mod to open the janitor's door?)

A walking simulator in the engine shell of a FPS wrapped in witty dialogue and an expert knowledge of the processes the gamer's mind go through as it attempts to go through the gaming narrative and the obstacles contained therein. Has a philosophical - existential side to it and will catch any unwary gamer by surprise with its bold approach. I highly recommend this one.

While most other games do a horrible and unfunny job on self awareness, The Stanley Parable does it so well that it makes the game very fun to play and just generally explore the opinions it gives you. The narrarator makes this game better because he dosen't just break the fourth wall he demolishes it with a giant hammer. From getting mad that you don't like the game so he takes you to other games to breaking the game within itself.

The game has a bunch of endings which makes it fun to go and look for new paths that lead to new places and new endings each time you boot up the game. The Stanley Parable Demo was probably my favorite demo ever for a game and got me to buy this game instantly after playing it, if are considering to buy this game and you haven't played the demo yet, then go play the demo.

This is a short review because that's pretty much all I have to say about this game, short simple and it just destroys the foruth wall.

Overall I rate this game a 7/10.

leave a baby to crawl into a raging fire. or not. or maybe not. YEeesh. Okay, it's a video game baby. The button buzzer is making me wince. I'm a heartless &$!@#*#.

This game is about choice and not about choice. About finding an end, and not finding an end.

Oh, enough of that. It's about goofing around and looking for all the endings to a delightfully inventive game. Assuming you have not had the time or money to get ahold of this game yet. I had put it off until the winter sale and glad I played it.

Quick, funny in both a ha-ha and an oh-my-god-this-is-stupid way.

Thought I had all the endings until I checked a guide and sure enough was missing a few. Try them all!

AUDIO: Central Focus                                    AESTHETIC: Experimental
MEMORABILITY: Strange                              WORTH: Light Discount

PROS: The exploration in Stanley Parable needs no introduction or enticement. Narration is excellent, both humorous and thought-provoking. Stanley Parable creates boundaries for the sole purpose of breaking them.

CONS: Those staunchly against walking simulators should check further into the games content before purchase. The game had a few unexpected, personally-upsetting moments. A few of the achievements are very gimmicky and hard to obtain.

OVERALL: You know when you're willingly spending a couple hours exploring an empty office, the creators have managed to do something pretty awesome.

SCORE: 9/10
