Reviews

“It's not the fact that The Stanley Parable makes you think about the nature of choice in games that makes it extraordinary. It's the fact that it does so while simultaneously managing to be a wildly entertaining, hilarious, and surprising experience.”
9/10 - Gamespot

“It's this bouncing between serious tone and irreverence that makes The Stanley Parable so special. You never know what to expect."
10/10 - Joystiq

“Where so many games that aspire to be more than games end up less than any form of art, Stanley Parable strives, and then succeeds.”
10/10 - Destructoid

“Astoundingly labyrinthine onion-like layers of narrative tangents the player can embark on in what feels like the unholy interactive offspring of Inception, Being John Malkovich and Portal.”

About This Game

The Stanley Parable is a first person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end. Contradiction follows contradiction, the rules of how games should work are broken, then broken again. This world was not made for you to understand.

But as you explore, slowly, zippity zop begins to arise, the paradoxes might start to make sense, perhaps you are powerful after all. The game is not here to fight you; it is inviting you to dance.

Based on the award-winning 2011 Source mod of the same name, The Stanley Parable returns with new content, new ideas, a fresh coat of visual paint, and the stunning voicework of Kevan Brighting. For a more complete and in-depth understanding of what The Stanley Parable is, please try out the free demo.

I don\'t even know how to properly describe this game.

Okay, I think I do - it\'s the ultimate meta video game. It takes everything you know about video games, yanks it out of your head, then shoves it back in backwards with a hint of lemon.

A narrator is constantly trying to keep you on the right track (which usually involves video game tropes, like a giant countown timer you must stop with a series of switches) and you can choose to ignore him at will, to which he will get angry. It very much explores the dynamic between game designer and player, and how those two things can be very much at odds. It also explores whether gaming is a worthwhile activity, and in a sense, if life is a form of a game. Are we not just playing out in our lives, the grand design of someone else?

Okay, see, that\'s what the game does to you. Get you into a very existential headspace where you start questioning the world itself, which is just amazing. Those who made this knew exactly what they were doing and communicated ideas brilliantly with actual humor!

It doesn\'t have too much longevity to it after youve gone through a few of the different endings, but it\'s worth the experience.

Don\'t buy this game. A complete waste of time. Everyone was ranting about how \"meta\" it was. It\'s boring and linear and the narrator\'s voice is annoying. It was funny at first but got old quickly.

It\'s absolutely worth the sale price of $3, you won\'t regret it. It\'s a good laugh and you\'ll be excited to have your friends play it and see their reactions.

-Fun walking sim/exploration sim/decision making sim
-Humor
-Sort of reminded me of the last part of Portal

You don\'t restart the game, the game restarts you...

Enjoy!

My problem with this game is the same problem I have with some elements of Superhot and Spec Ops: The Line. This problem can be summed up thusly: \"Haha, playing our game are you? What a loser!\"
It\'s not clever, it\'s just bullying. It is quite funny though, so it\'s that smart bully that you grew to like as they matured. But still I wouldn\'t recommend it.

There once was a man named Stanley,

Who people considered so manly.

But the truth must be told,

He was not very old,

And was quite particularly gangly.

What Stanley liked most was buttons.

He pushed them like some kind of glutton.

He did it all day

In a meaningful way,

But his brain had long ceased to function.

Which is why he is in this parable,

And lives an existence quite terrible.

And if you are not strong,

And keep playing along,

You too will become quite unbearable (x2).

Great game. There are many endings, and many things you can do. But, it can get a bit confusing. I always had a weird feeling of excitement; but I really wanted an explanation of what was going on in the game. I played, played, ended up in the office many times, and beat it many different times. It just feels like It\'s simply \'it\' after beating it.. There are a few \"easter\" eggs that are pretty cool. In my opinion, It\'s worth the price :P

Very unique and highly replayable (Until you do everything, then it's not so good).
This is one of the few games I 100%ed. If you look at the achievements you might understand why I was compelled to.

It is pretty simple:

1. play the game
2. play it again
3. and again
4. asking yourself: what the heck?
5. put the adventure line theme on your mobile device as ring tone

Walk through the same office 50 times and get your mind blown each time.

Mind♥♥♥♥ery and whitty comments throughout a very inventive narrative. You really have to play it all in one session, but it only takes 2-3 hours to "complete".

a friend gameshared this with me. He didn't tell me what it was about, he just said "You'll love it." I booted the game up, and was surprised to find that:

1. It wasn't a troll game

2. I actually enjoyed this game

I sat through a couple hours of it, and found this game entertaining. I legit couldn't put the controller down. 10/10 would play a sequal if they ever make one.

what did I just play?
was I playing at all?
am I Stanley or is Stanley me?
why a parable?
why pushing buttons?
the meaning of choices?
this is not a game this is madness and I really adore madness so this was awesome.
want action? skip this one
want a deep romantic story? skip this
truly not a conventional game, truly not really a game and yet more of a game than many games
it goes up and then down or down and then up, it is more like a parabola than a parable....

One word to describe this game: BRILLIANT.
The 4th wall is constantly destroyed, actually there's not even a 4th wall anymore, and you catch yourself wondering who you are at the end of it.
And the narration is amazingly performed, seriously. This is such a unique game that gives a unique experience, I definitely recommend playing it!!!

The Stanley Parable is a unique "Choose Your Own Adventure"-style walking simulator, with a heavy focus on humor relating to the role of narration and the player/viewer/reader in an interactive story.

Overall I would say the game is a very enjoyable, albeit somewhat short, experience. I'd be hard-pressed to find a joke or gag that fell flat.

I didn't know anything about this game when I first loaded it up and started playing. My son had watched videos of it on Youtube and told me it was a game I had to play...and to avoid spoilers. So I bought it and took a chance.

I managed to kill myself in less than a minute...and I didn't stop laughing for at least half an hour. The voice acting is fantastic and so is the crazy, winding, bizarre story.

I absolutely love this game.

The Stanley Parable is an experimental narrative-driven first person game. It is an exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling and reality, all examined through the lens of what it means to play a video game.

- You will make a choice that does not matter

- You will follow a story that has no end

- You will play a game you cannot win

...it's actually best if you don't know anything about it before you play it...

The HD Remix of The Stanley Parable is a remodeled, remastered version of this unique title.

I think this is not even a game, but in life someone told us to give us advice, and someone wants to scourge us, he brings a very deep meaning. 10/10

A walking simulator done right. A game that's extremely aware of itself and the player, and uses its meta narrative in clever, inventive and enjoyable ways, unlike 90% of indie trash. Humor, horror, drama - it does it all and does it well. Has surprising amounts of replayability.

If you like snarky narrators and adequate planning for players deviating from the main path, give this one a go. The game's limited in its replayability, and by now, there are enough LPs to have seen everything. If possible, go in blind, but it's otherwise a fun game to try out. It being a sale at the time of writing, you should pick this up regardless.

Note: if, like me, you played the original mod back in the day, you'll get an even bigger kick from the game, but I would not recommend you going back to play that now. Find a video for a little extra as you explore.
