Self taught for years, just from 2 hours played I have leared way more. Definately pick it up, especially because it is on sale. The cord is expensive, but worth it.

Amazing game to add to your guitar practice routine. I wouldn't recommend relying solely on Rocksmith to further your guitar playing, but if used in addition to normal practice, it's a great tool to either introduce the basic fundamentals to beginners, polish up some skills for more intermediate players or just to have some fun and learn some songs. Learning songs is very easy as you can slow down the songs or simplify them until you're comfortable enough to move up in difficulty/ speed. The ever-expanding library of available songs to add to your playlist is huge and you'll definitely find something to suit your tastes in the vast selection of DLC songs.

The only small problem I've come across is in the dropped tunings (mainly Drop C), where the low notes don't always register.

Overall 9.5/10

Great piece of software for learning different styles/aspects of playing guitar.

Only complaint is the on the fly increase in difficulty when I'm playing the song properly

Great learning tool. However, you will face a lot of problems setting this up to work. There is a real shortage of real tone cables (did not affect me. I had purchased the xbox 360 version of the original game and had one included).
Even if you have a real tone cable you may come across the "no audio output device is detected" error which is pretty much a gamebreaking feature as you won't get any sound and seems to block all input from a guitar that has been plugged in. This is resolved by only using realtek audio. In my case, this limited me to only being able to run the game when I used head/earphones plugged in through the audio jack. It's a little annoying since I can't play with speakers which I would of preferred, but my speakers use the USB port (have their own built in soundcard I guess and you may come across this issue with any audio output device that uses USB). This is the reason why I can't recommend this game. It's great and all but the lack of support really kills it.

If you plan on using headphones that are directly plugged into the audio jack to play this game. Get it you won't regret it

Never buy this digitally because getting a real tone cable is close to impossible. So when this is on sale...don't. Just don't do it man. Go buy yourself the ones in the gamestore that includes the cable.

Anyway...played this for some time...got bored due to lack of songs. Downloaded a pirated copy (cuz I already have the cable). Boom! Infinite songs!

This is the best game ever. I've been playing it for years starting with the original Rocksmith soon after it came out to Rocksmith 2014 for Xbox 360 to now the PC version. This makes learning guitar and practicing so much better because it cuts out a lot of the crap that makes it not fun (no backing instruments, difficulty in finding accurate tabs, the lack of equipment/ knowledge/ money to get the right tones, no progressing difficulty, etc.) I realized soon after starting to learn guitar that it is extremely expensive for good gear and lessons, and this also helps tremendously with that aspect in that you only need a decent guitar and the game. I used to be into Guitar Hero, but sold it soon after getting this. There is absolutely no reason or desire for me to play it after getting Rocksmith. This is a must have if you have any interest in playing guitar or bass.

I understand the financial reasons to require an overpriced ($45.99 USD) cable, but there is no logistical reason to not allow this to work with a proper audio interface. The store page does not state that the Real Tone Cable is the ONLY way to connect your guitar and that other normal/better ways simply will not work. I've tried many different ways of routing the audio, nothing even registers.

Another cashgrab by Ubisoft, go figure. Once I'm actually able to play this game, I'll update my review and decide if I can recommend it. As of now, I cannot.

If anyone has a workaround for OSX 10.11.5, I'd appreciate it. I've looked and found nothing.

It's like Guitar Hero, but with a real guitar.
It's pretty good, and will actually teach you songs. Although the multiplayer being constricted to local only is annoying, meeting up with friends to jam is a fun experience. New songs get added to the game very regularly.

I'd reccomend it if you either want a hard, realistic version of guitar hero, or want an easy and fun way to learn songs. (I would not, however, reccomend making this your only method of learning songs.)

Very easy review to write, it's a freaking great program.

Pros:

Rocksmith 2014 is a tremendously efficient guitar tutor masked cleverly as enjoyable entertainment. If you have any desire to learn guitar or bass you owe it to yourself to pick this up. Even at full retail price it is bus fare compared to one-on-one guitar training at a music store. You'll learn the same stuff, perhaps not the nitty gritty theory, but certainly the techniques as you would from a professional tutor but at a fraction of the cost... easy peasy decision.

You will Rock out... oh yes, you will.

The Steam version doesn't come with the cable but it can be sourced through Amazon and other retailers. Be aware that it 'could' cost more than just buying the physical box with the game DVD and cable when they're bought seperate.

The only Con:

Cost of DLC. Most songs are 3 bucks a piece, gets expensive fast. Buy packs where you can, and wait for Steam sales.

Cheers.

If you have a guitar, and ever wondered how hard it is to play it, give this game a try.

It's hard, and takes a lot of patience, but you learn real guitar skills, play real songs, and it gives you this great feeling that comes with improving yourself.

Possibly the best way to learn guitar, picked it up a few days ago, can now play Stone - Alice in Chains flawlessly, it teaches all techniques, and adjusts difficulty. There is a built in riff repeater allowing you to slow down specefic sections of songs which you may find difficult to comprehend. My only concern prior to buying the game was the Song catalogue, but there is no need to worry, here are some of the bands, Alice in Chains, Slayer, Tenacious D, Iron Maiden, Def Leapord, Megadeth, Alice Cooper, naming a few. Another great feature is the ability to test out a huge selection of amps, from the marshall jcm800 to the orange tiny terror, there is a large variety, this serves as a try before you buy, and allows you to make some pretty nice riffs, either with a high gain crunch sound, or a low gain clean sound, its all up to you. You can even tune the amps!.
To conclude if you want to learn guitar, or master it for that matter, this is the way to do so, the UI might be difficult if you are used to tabliture but you can get used to it.

Wow! It is everything it promises to be. I've tried learning guitar in the past, but got discouraged by the difficulty curve and the tedium of practicing. This software makes all of it enjoyable! From the beginning you're playing along with great songs. The notes are presented on a Guitar Hero-like note highway and the dynamically adjusting difficulty adds or removes notes depending on how well you're doing. Naturally, you can scale the difficulty and speed to your level, either in sections or for the whole song. Each song has its preset guitar sounds -- modeled after the original song -- but the software allows you to customize the sound of your guitar by setting up virtual amplifiers and pedals. You can have jam sessions with a vitual band. The lessons seem to cover pretty much everything you need to know and are well presented. The mini-games for practicing guitar techniques are all fun, excpet for Gone Whaling (which is about controlling the volume of your playing).

I first got a cheap guitar just to see if I can remain motivated using this software and after a month -- averaging a bit over an hour a day playing -- upgraded to a much better guitar. I'm also buying a bunch of the DLC songs. Do remember that it takes a lot of time and effort to learn to play an instrument. Maybe this software speeds up the process somewhat, but it most definitly makes it fun!

I'm surprised to be so positive about an Ubisoft product -- they publish so much garbage -- but this is pure gold!
