About This Game

Super Hexagon is a minimal action game by Terry Cavanagh, with music by Chipzel.

Important facts about Hexagons:

  • Hexagons are first order permutohedrons: The vertices of a hexagon can be formed by permuting the coordinates of the vector (1, 2, 3).
  • The north pole of the planet Saturn has a hexagonal storm cloud pattern with 8,600 mile long sides, larger than the diameter of Earth.
  • Though hexagon may appear to be a difficult word to rhyme, there are actually dozens of words that rhyme with it. For example: Autobahn, decagon, decathlon, electron, Kyrgzstan, Lebanon, leprechaun and marathon.

Super Hexagon is an indie video game developed by Terry Cavanagh and released on November 27th, 2012, for PC.

It's a simple twitch game in which player is given control of a small triangle, which circles around a figure (hexagon, pentagon or square), and needs to avoid the incoming obstacles in order to survive.

Pros:
• Simple, yet challenging gameplay;
• High replay value;
• Highly addictive;
• Wonderful, memorable soundtrack;
• Global and friends-only leaderboards;
• Unforgettable emotions after completing the Hyper Hexagonest stage;
• Low price;

Cons:
• Only 6 different levels;
• No widescreen support;

In fact, this game is an excellent example of how a good indie game should look like. The idea is not only very original, but is also perfectly brought to life, and the soundtrack fits the game splendidly. All in all, Super Hexagon is totally worth the money, and the emotions upon completion are totally worth the effort.

Overall rating: 9/10.

Addictive. Rage inducing. Beat your record and try to be better than your friends and then realize you have wasted hours of your life trying to avoid walls closing in on the little triangle. 6/6 hexagons!

You overshoot? "Game Over"
You undershoot? "Game Over"
You blink? "Game Over"
You break concentration for one nanosecond? "Game Over"

Soundtrack is among the very best on steam, but "Game Over" will be most of what you get to hear until you git gud.

Super Hexagon is an action game by Terry Cavanagh, and I'd say it's one of the most addicting games I've ever played.

Unless you haven't bought this game yet, or if you haven't seen the trailer, you MIGHT be asking, MohawkGoatyGoat, what in the name of dank memes do you do in this mighty-fine Hexagon-based action game of actioney action? Well, I can answer that question WITH a question. Who likes to move around dodging things with the middle (Hexagon) going ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spinning around like a charged up spin-dash, while looking at pretty colors? I made the game seem bad, didn't I?

Well, this game is NOT bad! Lemme tell you why plz.

In Super Hexagon, you move around dodging the obstacles that come in front of you. They ONLY appear in patterns with other obstacles. There is the C-pattern, the Bat pattern, and so many others (yes, I'm getting the names from a Steam guide). It's REALLY hard, well, that's because Terry Cavanagh has been notorious for creating some of the most nightmare fuel challenges in a video game.

Once you survive a level for 60 seconds, the hyper version of the level engages, which is basically a much harder reincarnation. Once you survive 60 seconds in a hyper level, you go to (what I call) a hyper INSIDE a hyper. OOooooo. Basically, it just adds pretty colors. Only exclusive to the 1st level (and it's hyper counter-part), the shape can change into a pentagon and a square. NEATO!

The middle Hexagon is spinning while you play, so you need to have a high attention span. This spins you, and the obstacles that come down. This feels like it makes the game a lot harder. When really, it's the same, but it can throw you off guard at times.

I know I haven't said much here, but this is a great action game that has it's own law around it. Don't check it out, and you go to jail, without being able to redeem you get-out-of-jail-free card.

Super Hexagon is a mixed bag. With seizure-inducing graphics, sudden difficulty spikes, and infuriating vocals, I considered not even recommending this game. But as all Terry Cavanagh games do, there was one gameplay element that spoke through to me:

The menu system. Yes, you heard me right. As an avid gamer, I have seen too many AAA titles have a long, drawn out menu systems. They usually involve many button presses, logos popping on the screen, lag from background elements, etc. Sometimes it takes two minutes to even get into proper gameplay. One time, I ordered a pizza while a game was loading, and it had arrived and I had finished eating it before I realized that the computer was off.

But this...this game is something special. You can open up the game, start playing it, stop playing it, and close the game in a total of 6 seconds. That is incredible. There is no game that is its equal. The length of time playing the game juxtaposes the amount of time wasted in the menus. For most games this is inversely proportional.

Terry Cavanagh, you are a masterful game designer. You took a bad game and made something irresistable about it. Something that tricks you into playing it for 30 hours, even if it's bad. And that makes it good. For that, it deserves a spot in the 2016 Game of the Year nominations.

Despite how confusing the pulsing and flashing of colors can be for me, this games difficulty combined with split second decision making and reactions along with fitting music make it rage indusing but upon victory, extremely rewarding
