About This Game

Super Hexagon is a minimal action game by Terry Cavanagh, with music by Chipzel.

Important facts about Hexagons:

  • Hexagons are first order permutohedrons: The vertices of a hexagon can be formed by permuting the coordinates of the vector (1, 2, 3).
  • The north pole of the planet Saturn has a hexagonal storm cloud pattern with 8,600 mile long sides, larger than the diameter of Earth.
  • Though hexagon may appear to be a difficult word to rhyme, there are actually dozens of words that rhyme with it. For example: Autobahn, decagon, decathlon, electron, Kyrgzstan, Lebanon, leprechaun and marathon.

Alright.. now I say ''This game is awesome!'' or ''This is one of the best games out there!'' quite a bit and I could say that about Super Hexagon aswell. BUT I feel that does not describe the game fairly... I think that Super Hexagon is THE BEST game in the world. I think that you should buy this game RIGHT NOW!

Okay so I gotta explain why I want you to buy Super Hexagon.

Alright. Here's some pros and cons.

Pros

- The game is really fun and addictive (In the ''Omg this is so cool! I want more!'' way, not the ''OH S**T I'VE BEEN PLAYING FOR 15 HOURS! I GOTTO BE AT WORK IN 10 MINUTES!'' way.

- It's super cheap. Like comon 2,99€/$ is a really good price. And I got it on sale for 1,01€!

- When you fail. It's not because of the game being unfair. It's your own fault for not paying enough attention. (When I die, I’m never frustrated, just a bit annoied because of my own ineptitude.)

- It's really hard in a fair and fun sorta way.

Cons

- It's addictive as Hell. I keep coming back when I got time and sometimes I play for a good hour straight (1 try lasts from 5 seconds to 65 seconds).

- Could Use more levels. Only six in the game right now, but you get a ♥♥♥♥ load of fun and gameplay out of them.

Final thoughts: I HIGLY recommend this game. It's great. It's really fun and it puts up a real challange. It's also quite addictive, But not in a ''Take up all your time and ruin your life'' sorta way. Overall I rate 9.9/10.

I'm absolutely horrible at this game but I can't seem to stop playing it.
It's annoyingly addictive.
The ability to get in a few tries real quick is just dangerous. It's a really fun reflex honing game.

Don't blink. Blink and you're dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck.

I am super mad that Cavanagh thought of this game before I did. The simplicity of the challenge is infuriatingly elegant. There are few purer challenges to your hand-eye coordination than this. I have been playing this game for years, and I still haven't uninstalled it.

Story

In Super Hexagon, there is no story. Unless you want to get deep into the game.

Graphics

Graphics are pretty simple, and tie with the gameplay. The camera moves around with the colors changing constantly. It is sometimes hard to focus, but I never said the game was easy.

Gameplay

Playing is very simple, use the arrow keys to dodge the shapes coming towards you. It gets faster as time goes on. You have to survive 60 seconds to unlock the next level, or go for you best time.

Music

Soundtrack is really good. Music goes with the gameplay.

Score

9/10 - I really wish there were more levels. That is the only thing missing.

Addictive:
- Missed birth of my child
- Missed conception of my child
- Missed beginning of relationship with my child's mother
- Missed child's graduation
- Lost track of what's important
But hey I can play a cool game now
10/10 would abandon family again.

Just look at the trailer, and that's exactly what this game is.

Can be frustrating, and requires fast reaction times when choosing which set of movements to match to the next sequence of shapes. Can be kind of addictive.

Remember to turn off vsync.

Not for everyone, but a good game if you like this genre of thing.

Terry Cavanagh is a genius. This game is a masterpiece. We should all be grateful there's someone great enough to provide us this experience: better, cheaper and weirder than LSD.

Super Hexagon

It is one of the first in it's genre and also the best.

GamePlay:
The control of this game just needs to press 2 Buttons. ←,→ or LeftMouse, RightMouse;
The Game is very simple, yet challenging.. The name already tells us that this game has to do with hexagons and yes. You're playing a triangle which moves in circles around a hexagon, trying to avoid the bar comming from outside to the middle. The first Level is a bit special, because the hexagon turns into a Square and back.
Anyway, I suppose more than 4 points isn't possible. :/
★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

Graphics:
hmmmm... Simple... and perhaps you feel like the 3rd Level is on LSD.^^ But all in one this graphic fits to the game.
★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

Leveldesign:
As I've already mentioned it, e.g. the first Level has the Square-Special-Thing, many Levels have different stuff to offer. The 3rd Level has a quick 180° turn, which is quite confusing if you're not common with that.^^

Something which is impossible to avoid, is to memories some patterns of certain level. Which pattern appears is random, but they look always the same and of course it's a useful skill to win. :)

After you've got 60 sec. on a level the level changes from: Lvl1 -> Lvl4, Lvl2 -> Lvl5, Lvl3 -> Lvl6,
Lvl4 -> Lvl4(Special), Lvl5 -> Lvl5(Special), Lvl6 -> Lvl6(Special) [Note: A Special Level is the part after 60 sec of a certain Level beyond 3!]
After 120 sec. the Level changes again and so on.
(e.g. If you start at Lvl1 -> Lvl4 -> Lvl4(Special) -> Lvl5 -> Lvl5(Special) -> Lvl6 -> Lvl6(Special)

So you see they prevent an repetition by changing the levels.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Music:

Music:
First the music was not my taste. After playing longer and longer, it get better and better. So at the end I really liked the music.^^ A bit weird, isn't it?
The Game contains 3 ½ Soundtrack. Each Lvl pair 1-4,2-5,3-6 have one and the ending song which is actually a reversed version of the last one. That's why I wrote ½. :p

btw: After you finish the 6th Level (get 60 sec.) you've beaten the game and when you die, a kind of credits appear. The game plays the music of the last Level reversed and the bars now came out of the hexagon. It was an amazing feeling and of course a awesome ending.
★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

At the end, i think it's worth to buy Super Hexagon. Makes fun. Cheap. Challenging.
Sadly just 4/5 Points... :/

✔ Multiple starting points for each level
✔ Trippy rhythmic visuals and music
✔ Fast paced - great training tool for your reflexes
✔ Challenging and enjoyable

× While not too short, it might have more stages

Pros:
  • Challenging
  • Extremely rewarding
  • Cheap
  • Easy to pick up and put down

Cons:
  • Learning curve makes you feel pretty bad about yourself for a while
  • Last level feels overwhelmingly difficult
  • Can be frustrating
  • No way to make it easier on the eyes for sensitive people
  • Probably could give an epileptic a seizure

Even if you're unsure of whether or not you'll enjoy this game, I would still say buy it. It's cheap enough not to leave a dent in your wallet either way.
If you buy it and struggle, don't give up! The difficulty can be pretty discouraging especially when you first start out!
