What the developers have to say:

“I don't think I've ever been so giddy working on a project. I find myself just grinning at the screen instead of actually working on the game, wandering around the world watching our creatures or exploring the cool things that the procedural system made. Our vision with Windborne is both simple and enormously complex at the same time. We want to make a Miyazaki-style Disneyland of creative sandbox worlds- an infinite number of dense, exciting islands to explore with your friends, full of high adventure, where it's up to you to decide what to do. Inspired by games such as Animal Crossing, Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, and the early Zeldas, expect more features to be added and finessed as we move closer to launch.”

Windborne Update, 7/22/2014

Windborne Signs, Ladders, and Launchers Update, 7/22/2014

  • New features:
    • New Climbable (vines, ladders)
    • New Launcher (you can shift-click it in gather mode to switch between various directions)
    • New Signs (Iconic Standing Sign, Iconic Wall Sign, Iconic Floor Sign, Standing Sign, Floor Sign, Hanging Sign)
      • Activate normal signs to write text on them. Click in the text box to write on the sign.
      • Shift-click iconic signs to go through the icons
    • You can turn on auto-gather in settings. This makes it so you continually gather in gather mode without holding down the right mouse button.
  • Misc fixes/polish:
    • UI Consistency update (buttons, scrollbars, etc)
    • Fly-to-player no longer teleports you inside the target player
    • Physics is now turned off for plants, ladders, etc. You can place these even if standing in the block.
    • Wall and brick blocks are much more efficient (they hide geometry that is obscured). This is retroactive.
    • Hand auto-hide is less annoying
  • Bug fixes:
    • Many crash fixes
    • Pets tamed as a client no longer act like they belong to the host
    • Malik/Ferals only take one block from item stacks (you won’t lose all your gold in one swoop)
    • Music volume setting is less sensitive
    • Player/Character loading is more safe and tries to handle/recover corrupted characters
    • Some broken UI crafting filters were fixed

Bug Fixes Patch (5/30/14)

Hi, everyone! Echo here (posted by Nerdmaid). It's been just over a week since we released the World Traveler, and I thought I'd take some time to talk about where we're going next.

This patch which addresses some minor bugs that we missed in the update, as well as a recovery tool which should help those who are in the middle of a save when the power goes out (It happens more frequently than you’d guess). I’d like to thank everyone for the feedback and reports – they help us a lot, and we go through every one of them.

Now we’re going to start focusing on our next update, which means that we probably won’t update the game for another 5-6 weeks, but we still have a lot of things going on:

  • Kaboom, our community rep, runs weekly build challenges and live streams (follow us on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/windbornegame )
  • We’re active on twitter at https://twitter.com/WindborneGame
  • We post dev updates periodically on our website:
    --> Blog: http://www.hiddenpath.com/blog/category/windborne/
    --> Forums : http://www.hiddenpath.com/forum/forum/hidden-path-forums/windborne-general-discussion
  • The Windborne Steam Community is pretty active - http://steamcommunity.com/app/221560/discussions/

What’s planned for the next update? Well, we like it being a surprise, but I can give one hint right now: Exploring is going to become a very important part of the game.

As always, thanks for your support, and feel free to give us feedback at any time!

Patch notes:
  • Fixed a number of crashes
  • Flits and Pinchers now follow you after being tamed
  • Visiting Gallery islands is more reliable
  • Pets won’t follow other players
  • Character select now shows your entire character
  • Re-added the recipe for Super Marble Bricks
  • Control settings are more reliably saved
  • Those who play in our live streams with Kaboom now may receive a special gift!

While this is not the most engaging game of the genre mix, it is very nicely put together and extremely stable. These guys know how to make Early Access seem like a good thing amidst a lot of other companies. I would recommend this game, but for the price it is not worth it. There are several other world builders with many more features, purposes, and functionality for a lower cost. There are two that I can think of are also early access and equivalent on graphics, have a lot more entertainment value, and functionality.

Pros:
Stable
Nice graphics
Nice music
Smooth animations
A very helpful tutorial
Constant positive interaction with team

Cons:
Not much to do
No combat or real purpose
Simplistic gamplay
Simplistic recipies and components
No storyline
No penalties
No challenge
Nothing new
Very repetitive

Windborne has been a great experience so far.
Slick design, cute creatures, questing system that makes you explore the (currently 3) biomes.
If you like voxel based building/exploring games, you should really try this out.

Currently still in early access, but i see a bright future for Windborne

I've never played minecraft, so all I can say is that this game is tons prettier than the game I see my niece playing on the 360. There, comparison out of the way.

I really, really enjoy this game, even in its currently raw and unfinished state. The islands you can generate are very pretty, and I like how easy it is to share the seeds of your favorite worlds either for resources or just to share a great set of biomes.
The developers are really involved with the community, which is pretty cool. Steam discussions, bug reports, build challenges and weekly streams, these devs are all over the place.
The item sets are all good looking, and fit well within themselves, and you can make some really impressive stuff, if you want to put the time in. Honestly, being able to visit other people's islands is almost depressing. I was pretty happy with my house until I saw some of the stuff other people were making. :S
I dig this game for what it is, and I'm looking forward to where it goes. Updates aren't super frequent, but when they come, they're hefty, so I'll try to update this after the next one, should be a month and a bit.

It's fun, and looks gorgeous, but is really quite empty. Maybe it'll be worth getting once it develops a little more.

So, let's extend my story. I saw the trailer for this game, I saw some people play this game. Tihs sandbox game looks amazing with smooth graphics, amazing capability, and overall... It looked amazing. But wait, why hit the "Dislike" Thumb? I'll tell you why. Everything in the trailer was essentially all it was in the game. No Creative-related mode, no real-purpose. The game is a lot of fun the first couple hours, but after that... You just regret getting it and wished you had just bought G-Mod or something. So, lemme repeat that in English.

Good Stuff:
Amazing Graphics
Smooth Animation
Runs Very Well

Bad Stuff:
No Storyline/Purpose
Only One Way To Play. And in The way most Minecrafters would dislike. Survival on constant Peaceful mod ON.
$29.99 is NOT worth it. I could re-consider with Steam Workshop implemented, but even then... Way too expensive.

I have only delved into it a bit, but so far it is fun and I see ALOT of potential.

You dont use a pickaxe or shovel, but rather magic (through your hand) to dig/place blocks. I believe they will eventually allow you to craft items of power that will go on your character (like an rpg) that will allow you to "dig" faster, etc. It certainly looks like it has the potential to use magic on enemies (whenever enemies are introduced) instead of a sword or blaster. I personally like this and have not seen a sandbox crafting game that really allows magic as its main formula.

The game also allows "Quality Crafting" So instead of getting that iron bar (like Minecraft) every single time, you get one of three options: iron bar, superb iron bar, or exceptional iron bar (I forget the exact names and the higher the quality the less of a chance you will get one). This also works with blocks as well. So when you are crafting marble blocks from raw marble you are going to get 3 different kinds of marble, each with their own color and look. A higher quality block will look like it has more blocks that compose it so you get a greater quality of detail when you get the rarer items.

The potential is mind-blowing when you consider all the unique items you can get. The amount of detail will be unsurpassed, I believe.

Also there are adorable flying baby sheep that you can harvest wool from. What's not to love?

If you don't want to buy it right away, definately keep an eye on it! It should be a great building game!
