Update from the Team #5: CRYENGINE 3.6.6. released

September 2

Hey all,

and welcome back to another installment of our Updates from the CRYENGINE team. This time around, we want to discuss what is new in today’s release of CRYENGINE 3.6.6 to all of our subscribers.

As always, you can find the full releases notes in our Documentation, but we want to call out a few key improvements (many of which are based directly on your feedback and reports)

FBX improvements and refinements

One of the most popular additions in 3.6.5 was the FBX Import Dialog, which represents our first step towards true FBX support further down the road. You have sent us a lot of feedback on this first implementation, some of which is reflected in today’s fixes and improvements. As previously said, this is the first part of a larger project that you will see evolve over time with future releases.

Audio fixes and improvements

On the Audio side of things, we have adjusted several visual aspects of the ACB, such as new icons, layouts as well as general functionality to make the ACB more powerful and more comfortable to use. Beyond this quality of life improvements, a new AudioAreaAmbience entity will also help to improve working with ambiance audio areas.

New Assets

As with previous builds, we have used the release of 3.6.6 to add some more work-in-progress assets to the engine (and as always, you are free to use them in your own projects). These include some new weapon scopes and character attachments, with more to come in the future.

Community Contributions

Long-time CryDev montributor Richmar1 (whose Game Starter kits we have previously features) is back with his latest project: The CRYENGINE Project Manager! What is it all about, in his own words?

Hello everyone! I'm here today to announce something very special: CRYENGINE Project Manager. The idea is to provide a complete project management solution that enables developers to quickly manage, switch, and deploy CRYENGINE projects with ease and flexibility.

You can find more on the project as well as the downloads here

Showcase

Sometimes a little inspirational eye candy is all it takes to come up with something great yourself, and the “Asian Temple” by Censored_id certainly fits the bill. This stunning showcase scene has been making the gaming news lately, and with good reason! (include screen) You can find all of the screens here.

Finally, we want to give a shout-out to our friends at Xaviant, whose first-person action game “Lichdom: Battlemage” was been released on Steam this week. Longtime fans of CRYENGINE have been following this game throughout its development (including presentations at the CRYENGINE booth at GDC), so we are excited for them to get their finished game into gamers hands!

That’s it for this time. As always, we are grateful for your support, and the feedback that you keep sharing with us- please keep it coming!

All the best,
The CRYENGINE Team

Update from the Team #4: CRYENGINE 3.6.5. released

August 7

Hey all,

Welcome to our fourth update from the team. First of all, we apologize for the slightly longer than usual wait between Updates- the team has been heads down in the trenches working on today’s release, which took slightly longer than originally anticipated. So without further ado, let us get to the meat of today’s update: the release of CRYENGINE 3.6.5. While the full release notes can be found here, we want to highlight a few additions in a bit more detail:

CryDesigner Smoothing Groups

With the addition of Smoothing Groups, the CryDesigner takes a huge step forward as a legitimate content creation tool, giving you the power to create seamless models, directly in your level, inside Sandbox and at no additional cost!

To give you all a taste for the possibilities this offers, Crytek Artist Aleksander has started to recreate the Sandbox Team’s office space.

FBX Import Dialog

The new FBX Import Dialog is our first step towards true FBX support, something we have wanted to do for quite some time. In fact, the CRYENGINE Resource Compiler has had the ability to import static FBX meshes for a while now but this dialog gives users the front-end GUI and more control over what they want to import and how. Keep in mind, this is a first step and we plan on vastly improving the support and capabilities of this system as we go. So please give the tool a spin, and send us your feedback on it!

Game Content

In addition to some up-coming docs about basic inventory scripting, we've enhanced the currently shipped content to help users understand how inventories work in CRYENGINE and how to modify them to suit your game’s needs. We've also setup a few additional versions of the base SDK character with different colored outfits along with different equipment packs for AI, and then referenced those in the Archetype characters library so that you can see how you can setup different character types like friendlies, enemies, heavies, etc. As always, there is more to come in the future!

Mannequin Workshop

We've put together a great step-by-step workshop on COOP animations, which includes workshop files shipped with the SDK assets, tutorial article on the CRYENGINE docs as well as a new "MannequinObject" entity which can be used for in-game previewing of Mannequin animations.

Community Contributions

Today we want to give a shout-out to our friends at Entrada Interactive, who are currently working on the Multiplayer Survival game “Miscreated” (which has already been Greenlit on Steam). While they are busy porting their promising looking title to CRYENGINE 3.6, one of their artists took the time to share their PBS workflow with the community via Twitch. You can find all of Ryan’s videos showcasing different materials here.

Please make sure to say thanks to Ryan and the "Miscreated" team.

That’s it for this time. As always, we cannot stress enough for crucial your feedback is for the team- please keep it coming so we can continue to shape CRYENGNE into a service that fulfills all your game development needs.

Until next time,
The CRYENGINE Team

Reviews

“CRYENGINE is, for my money, the best looking and most full-featured engine currently available.”
Chris Roberts, Founder and CEO, Cloud Imperium Games

“It’s safe to say we literally could not have done this game with any other engine without a drastic reduction in the scope of our project; the size of our maps, the level of detail. We set out to make a world that was breathtaking to look at, and that’s what you see in-game. It’s a relationship we hope to grow in the future with more games!”
Turtle Rock Studios

“We looked at every major technology out there and CRYENGINE suits our needs perfectly.”
Martin Klima, Executive Producer, Warhorse Studios

CRYENGINE has been a strong platform in impressive titles for years. It contains some amazing visual technologies, and the post-processing effect defaults out of the box are great. It comes with things like the incredibly powerful RENDERDOC utility for profiling your draw calls and timings, which is always useful in game development. In general it is good engine for major projects and for workflows that involve multiple people/teams. Unfortunately that's not what their new Engine-as-a-Service paradigm is targeting with a Steam release and $10 single-seat subscription licensing.

I'm going to have to rate this down on Steam, due to a serious disconnect between what they're marketing and the experience you are likely to have with it. It is on Steam specifically to appeal to independent developers with its new subscription based structure that costs less than many MMOs. The editing tool (which is what you're exposed to right at the start) has a lot of presets, behaviors, and objects for first-person shooters, but not for much of anything else. Furthermore, CRYENGINE (without serious tweaks) makes some problematic assumptions about the games you'll want to make with it; the concept of health, gravity, characters, the way it handles player controls, etc. From a quick look around the features in the tools and the demos, you will quickly realize that the package is targeted for gamers who what to try making their own shooter. Again, there are tons of GREAT features in CRYENGINE and it is, at its core, a pretty good engine for the cost.

In closing, CRYENGINE is great for those who are steeped in the workflow and methodologies involved with developing in it. But those people will already know this and won't need to read these reviews. To those interested in just trying out a "triple-A" engine: be warned. There is a significant learning curve (like all engines), but the package you are given with CRYENGINE is prohibitively unintuitive, especially to the uninitiated. I have to vote this down for the simple fact that those reading this review would be better served with any of the other popular engines. The community and resources you have available to you for learning CRYENGINE as a newbie simply pale in comparison to some of the direct competitors, and I'm afraid that's a vitally important aspect when you're targeting this kind of audience.

This pales in comparison to the UE4 subscription. This seems to be the same as the free sdk, with some updates. Still don't get shader source? Are you serious?

I was really excited when I saw this on steam. Unfortunately they still have a ways to go. It's kind of buggy i.e. missing sprites and sounds that show up in weird ways when you shoot the wrong thing. There is also very little starter content/examples to look at. Hopefully they will update soon but until then I can't recommend it.

Cry Engine is the easiest All-In-One Engine i have used.
I highly recommend it.
It needs a lot of learning, but it is worth of your time.
Im really mad about all the negative reviews.
You have to realize that this kind of engine needs much time to learn even the basics.
There is the FreeSDK to try if you dont want to buy subscription.
Download
But it is only 9,90€ to create your ideas in to a game.
I could tell so much about the awesome features, but this video explains it all better than me.

GREAT!!

I did allot of reading about this package, at first it was on reviews like this one here on Steam.... There are allot of un-greatful mis-guided brats running around posting up things like "CRAP!!!1!" when you read into it this would reflect their understanding of what they are purchasing. Whilst it is a powerfull state of the art robust development tool it is not a $2.50 everythings done for you, you just choose where the walls go and pick a splash screen, RPG Maker OMG MADE 5 GAMES THIS WEEKEND didnt-actually-make-a-game-game-maker.....sorry there's nothing wrong with people using those programs, they are great gateways to finding passion for Games Development, however time and time again people have given this bad reviews based on the fact it's difficult to use.

Its difficult to use compared to a toaster and easy compared other development suites, think about what you would like to get out of this. It will be time consuming, you will spend allot of time on the CryDev site flicking through the countless bits of documents surrounding the ins and outs of how too and how NOT too.

Another bum wrap I noted is just that, people complained that there isn't any documentation on how to use this thing.... in-correct there is plenty to read and plenty to help you through. I have found everything I have needed so far (extreme beginer user)

It has a powefull easy-to-use sandbox that from what I can see can be used my people like me who are very basic and down the line becomes very powerful and precise. The process to export and playtest a level you are working on is about 7 clicks or something. ALSO THERE IS ALLOT OF INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION ON THIS PRODUCT ITS JUST NOT STAPLED TO YOUR THICK HEAD FOR YOU.

In summary,

DO BUY THIS IF -

You are aware that you are purchasing access to tools and an engine which is quite amazing with a great level of support ( if you know how to type into a ♥♥♥♥ing google-esk search bar) and understand you will not knock out a unique AAA game over the weekend. It's really quite great I've learnt allot reading allot of documents and peicing bits and peices together.

DON'T BUY THIS IF -

a) You are upset by what you have read because I've personally offended you.
b) You lack the ability to accept / find that this package has multiple arms including the documentation which is on a website
f) You expect to launch it, wave a wand and laugh with GabeN next weekend about how easy the games industry is to master
u) You intend to spend 0.1 hrs using then trash it with a review
k) You are your mothers brother
u) You have the expectation that you will download the ability to code games at the same time you download this utility
h) You don't have spare time / patience to hone a skill or persue a career and or hobbie.

All seriousness its $9, try it out I've found it quite enjoyable so far.
