Looking ahead at things to come: CRYENGINE 3.7


Hey all,

as you know, the team has been busy working on CRYENGINE 3.7, and today we want to give you a look at some of the new features that will be included in this build (in addition to a large number of fixes, improvements and optimizations).

Character Tool
First up is the new Character Tool, which combines the functionality of several previous tools (Character Editor, Animation Importer, Animation Compression Editor, DBA Editor) into one new tool, with a completely reworked and improved user interface. Also included is asset browsing for all your animation related files.

SDL_Mixer added as a free alternative to Wwise
Our Audio Translation Layer (ATL) has already allowed you to hook up any audio-middle ware of your choice into CRYENGINE, but with 3.7 we are adding built-in support for SDL_mixer as a free and simple alternative to the existing Wwise implementation.

You can see the ability to switch the audio-middleware at runtime in the below video that our Lead Audio ProgrammerThomas took for fun.

Improved Temporal Anti-Aliasing
With 3.7, we are introducing the improved Temporal Anti-Aliasing that was shipped with the PC version of Ryse: Son of Rome into Engine-as-a-Service, offering a greatly improved image quality at minimal performance cost.

Lighting on transparent objects
When tiled forward shading is enabled, glass will now receive direct lighting (including shadows) and probe-based ambient, making it look a lot more consistent with standard opaque objects.

CryDesigner
While not a new feature, we have greatly expanded the functionality of CryDesigner with the addition of the Subdivision tool.

Update from the Team #14: 3.6.17, GDC and Open Positions!

Hey all,
today we want to talk about our latest update, Crytek's GDC plans and some open positions- so let's get right to it!

Again, these smaller updates are mainly intended to fix issues that are causing trouble for our users, while the main focus of the team is the much meatier 3.7 update (more on that in the future).

Crytek at GDC
The 2015 Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco is approaching fast, and Crytek will be there to show the world some exciting things we have been working on. As announced last week, we will bring a new VR demo, news on CRYENGINE for Android as well as interesting talks from some of our licensees- so if you are at GDC, make sure to drop by and say Hi! More details are in our GDC Press Release.

What can I get with my monthly subscription?
Getting in with our EaaS program has a number of benefits: first of all, you will always have access to the latest build of our CRYENGINE, and be the first to hear about any upcoming updates. You have instant access to all graphic features and tools, including the powerful renderer behind our Xbox One title Ryse: Son of Rome, C++ and Lua API interfaces along with a full game implementation written in C++, and demo levels and assets for different types of games.

Is it really royalty free?[/u]
Yes, the monthly subscription fee is all you have to pay, there’s no royalty share required when you commercialize your game projects.

What version of CRYENGINE is on Steam?
The current version of CRYENGINE on Steam is 3.6.17. By subscribing, you will continuously receive all the upcoming updates and new features of CRYENGINE.

What is Wwise?
Wwise from Audiokinetic is the world-class audio engine and integration tool that we’ve chosen to include with CRYENGINE. Used in AAA games across console, desktop and mobile platforms, Wwise provides a complete audio integration pipeline that we’ve deeply integrated into CRYENGINE. You can learn more about Wwise here. Wwise ships with CRYENGINE in Evaluation mode, allowing for projects with under 200 sound files and for non-commercial use. You must upgrade to a commercial license to ship your game.

How do I upgrade my Wwise license?
There are two ways to upgrade your license of Wwise. If your project uses under 200 sound files, you can use the Wwise Free Limited Commercial License. You can start the process by creating an account at the Audiokinetic website, and then you can request your Limited Commercial License key by creating a project here. Be sure to fill out the form completely, as it will need to be approved.

The other method is for projects that go beyond the 200 sound file limit of the Limited Commercial License. For these, please contact Audiokinetic directly to request a full commercial trial or purchase a full commercial license. Licensing price details can be found here.
