Reviews

“For all its charm, Thomas is more than just the super-minimalist-yet-incredibly-engaging tales of a few plucky AIs. It's the story of games. Of how they get made and played, of the joys and frustrations they bring and of the thousands of tiny iterative processes that go into evolving single titles and the entire medium into their best forms.”
Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

“It proves that you don't need tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of staff to make a game story worth telling, just a good hook, an engaging vision, and a whole lot of heart.”
9/10 – Josh Tolentino, Destructoid

“The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.”
8/10 – Keza MacDonald, IGN

About This Game

Thomas Was Alone, and then, Well, he Wasn't.

Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment.
Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.

Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Key Features

  • Beat 100 levels, and uncover the story of the AIs.
  • Utilize the unique skills of 10+ characters.
  • Immerse yourself in David Housden's critically acclaimed procedural score.
  • Chuckle along to Danny Wallace's narration.

I know it's verbotem on Steam tocriticize a technically well produced, avant garde indie game, but Thomas Was Alone just isn't a fun game, or an experiential game, or whatever defenses one might try to clamour to defend this.

Thomas Was Alone at its heart is a platform game with some puzzle solving. By far its biggest problem is it's far too easy. None of the puzzles are challenging, and while nailing some jumps may be tricky, the platforming is not a reason to play this game. There just isn't any interesting gameplay to speak of and this kills the game. After reaching section 10 without any difficult stages - I felt like an employee moving boxes around a grid - I gave up.

Graphically its simple, but the style can't be faulted. You control geometric shapes, usually squares or rectangles, each with different jumping abilities. It's clean and has a nice interface for manoevring levels.

Despite its simply graphics, there is a bizarre attempt to narrate some sort of cohesive story. While the voice acting is a nice touch, simply naming and personifying these little shapes is not enough. They don't have any emotion to speak. How could they? These are not companion cubes.

Fantastic.

Great characters, easy to pick and play, and a story line that had me on the verge of tears. The length of the final act diminished the emotional impact (other wise some serious tissues were in order), but regardless it was an excellent game.

I highly recommend playing through in a single sitting.

For the most part very minimalistic- it's just blocks. The gameplay stays simplistic as well. But the well-written story and well-performed narration are incredibly charming, and it clicks with the gameplay mechanics quite well.

Thomas Was Alone is little more than pixelated maps, and a few coloured cubes jumping around; yet it delivers a greater experience than half of my entire Steam library combined. Ingenious story-telling and a witty narrative transforms these basic (I mean really... really basic) visual elements into an experience worth talking about. This awarded game by Mike Bithel, voiced by Danny Wallace, is brilliant in its simplicity.

4.5/5 from me.

This is an awesome puzzle game.

- The story is cute
- The gameplay is nice, not so hard or too easy
- Easy to learn how to play, hard to master
- It's not so hard to get all the achievements
- This was one of the first puzzle games I played on Steam and I really love it <3

Thomas Was Alone is an amazing minimalistic puzzle platformer. It is challenging but not frustrating. Slow-paced and relaxing but not boring.

Narration by Danny Wallace (known by Assassin’s Creed series) is what takes this simple game to a whole new level. And music of course. It is so beautiful. Sadly soundtrack is not available for purchase but you can find it on YouTube.

Screenshots and reviews don’t do this game justice. For the love of indie gaming go play this one.

P.S. There are 20 easy-to-miss extra levels (10.1 - 11.10) available through the Main Menu -> Scenario Select with new characters and a new story. Don’t forget to play them!

This game is an unexpected pleasure. The art is simple, yet masterfully put together. Good narration keeps you engaged and the music is very entertaining. The game is divided in sections. Each section is 10 levels. In each section a new character/power is introduced. The whole thing is well put together, you won't get bored.
The game can be finished in little more than 3 hours.
There are two hidden sections that will be available to play once you get all the achievements (they show up in the menu before-hand). The difficulty gets increased on these last two sections. Achievements are pretty straight forward to complete.

I cried a little about squares.

Thomas Was Alone is a parable. It's about accepting people who are different, helping those who can't do the things you can do, and being proud of your abilities while remaining humble. This game is about loneliness and finding people who will accept you no matter what, reminding you that regardless of how amazing you perceive someone, others are flawed and full of doubts.

All that from a minimalist game about squares.

I was extremely impressed with how, while the narrator spoke, the level usually reflected what was being said. Literal, unbreakable divides between characters, spikey, uncomfortable thoughts, and towering obstacles that would be impossible alone but you're /not/.

There's some glitches in the later levels (that you can use to your advantage). The music gets kind of clamorous, which isn't annoying at first, but I thought I somehow was running the game twice. It would probably grate on someone else.

This is a gentle, easy puzzle game that doesn't get too hard. I felt like I was reading an intelligently written children's book, the kind that makes you go back as an adult and say "Yeah, that was a good story."
