Reviews

“For all its charm, Thomas is more than just the super-minimalist-yet-incredibly-engaging tales of a few plucky AIs. It's the story of games. Of how they get made and played, of the joys and frustrations they bring and of the thousands of tiny iterative processes that go into evolving single titles and the entire medium into their best forms.”
Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

“It proves that you don't need tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of staff to make a game story worth telling, just a good hook, an engaging vision, and a whole lot of heart.”
9/10 – Josh Tolentino, Destructoid

“The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.”
8/10 – Keza MacDonald, IGN

About This Game

Thomas Was Alone, and then, Well, he Wasn't.

Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment.
Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.

Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Key Features

  • Beat 100 levels, and uncover the story of the AIs.
  • Utilize the unique skills of 10+ characters.
  • Immerse yourself in David Housden's critically acclaimed procedural score.
  • Chuckle along to Danny Wallace's narration.

Small but neat puzzle game. Completed it in 3 hours (full game + all achievements). Take it on sale.
P.S. So much character development for the square blocks :)

Thomas Was Alone is an amazing minimalistic puzzle platformer. It is challenging but not frustrating. Slow-paced and relaxing but not boring.

Narration by Danny Wallace (known by Assassin’s Creed series) is what takes this simple game to a whole new level. And music of course. It is so beautiful. Sadly soundtrack is not available for purchase but you can find it on YouTube.

Screenshots and reviews don’t do this game justice. For the love of indie gaming go play this one.

P.S. There are 20 easy-to-miss extra levels (10.1 - 11.10) available through the Main Menu -> Scenario Select with new characters and a new story. Don’t forget to play them!

This game is phenomenal! The game proves that you don't need to have fancy graphics to make a great game. The controlls, gameplay, story, and voice acting was some of the best I have expierenced in a video game. I would Highly recommend this game. It took me a little over 3 hours to finish, but by the end, it had me chomping at the bit wanting more. I was lucky to get it on sale, but if I had known it was going to be that good, I would have bought it full price. Heck, if anything, buy it at full price so that Mike Bithell can make more games!!

One side note,
Before playing this game I had just finished reading "Flatland" by Edwin Abbott. (not for school, I actually found it in a NYC book store and thought it sounded fun) Its a short book (100 pages or so) but I was glad that I had read it before this game as it gave me a interesting thought process while playing. Almost as if I knew what these shapes were going through.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and buy this game.

Cheers!!

Thomas Was Alone is a minimalistic yet charming platformer that delivers an experience unlike any other of this genre. You take control of several blocks each with their own advantages and disadvantages depending on their size and jumping abilities. The premise of this game is to overcome obstacles each level using the blocks.

Narration is the biggest appeal for Thomas Was Alone in my opinion because along with a small story, personalities are attached to each block over the course of the game. You get to learn about the blocks as if they are REAL characters and this is certainly how I felt as I progressed. I wanted to learn more about them and how they felt towards one another. You could say I was beginning to feel a little emotionally invested too especially since I could relate to some of them.

It's simple, cute, has a superb soundtrack and it just succeeds at what it does without even trying much. This is worth your time.

I'll give this a thumbs up, as there's only 2 review options. However, it's a bit meh.

It's a tediously boring game masked with a "cutesy" kind of Stanley Parable aesthetic, except the puzzles are rather uninspiried and it doesn't quite pull it off. Still, it's worth it for a couple of quid.

Beauty in simplicity.

This is a wonderful game if you want just unwind and listen to a lovely soundtrack for a while. The story, centered around several artificial intelligences with distinct, if simplistic, personalities, is more absorbing than I expected it to be. I really started to grow attached to the characters and found myself playing for hours, hoping to finally reach the resolution. Speaking of which, the game may be a tad over-long. A story is only really satisying once the end is reached and this story seems to have two endings. The first ending is really touching and sweet and rounds things off nicely. The "actual" ending is somewhat confusing and left me wondering if I should be disappointed or intrigued.

Overall, the game is beautifully crafted, but I feel like it over-reaches itself. After the larger bit with the main characters, the game keeps going, introducing a slew of new characters, all interesting and enjoyable, who could have been made the focus of their own game. In this game, however, they don't really serve a clear purpose.

I still definitely recommend the game for its beautiful character development. It takes real talent and effort to make an audience care about visually nondescript geometric shapes and Thomas Was Alone pulls it off fantastically.

This game is Genius! You know the game is good, when you are in love with a faceless, expressionless quadrilateral. The narrative is fantastic and the game-play is nice, it worth much more than it costs. If it got your attention, just buy it. :)

This game leaves me speechless, how much can be done though good story telling and characters alone. The game explores the concept of "alone" to different people, how they deal with it and how they eventually find their place in this company. And it connects well with this almost empty environment of textureless clean shapes. I found it a profound experience to play though.

Overall short, enjoyable and powerful.

Prepare to get emotional about some pixels.
