Reviews

“For all its charm, Thomas is more than just the super-minimalist-yet-incredibly-engaging tales of a few plucky AIs. It's the story of games. Of how they get made and played, of the joys and frustrations they bring and of the thousands of tiny iterative processes that go into evolving single titles and the entire medium into their best forms.”
Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

“It proves that you don't need tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of staff to make a game story worth telling, just a good hook, an engaging vision, and a whole lot of heart.”
9/10 – Josh Tolentino, Destructoid

“The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.”
8/10 – Keza MacDonald, IGN

About This Game

Thomas Was Alone, and then, Well, he Wasn't.

Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment.
Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.

Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Key Features

  • Beat 100 levels, and uncover the story of the AIs.
  • Utilize the unique skills of 10+ characters.
  • Immerse yourself in David Housden's critically acclaimed procedural score.
  • Chuckle along to Danny Wallace's narration.

THOMAS WAS ALONE - A beautiful, minimalist indie 2D puzzle/platformer.

|| 8.5 ||
Score Comment
Graphics 8 Simple but pleasing, using clean lines and shapes to form the game levels. Game Characters are also simple shapes with different colours but are easily identifiable. Background colours and effects have a different pallet for each level. The overall effect is minimalist, stylish and elegant.
Audio 10 Relaxing ambient background music throughout the game and excellent story narration by Danny Wallace (He won a BAFTA for his performance). There really is nothing to fault here.
Gameplay 9 Thomas was alone has simple and intuitive controls that respond well, giving good control of your characters. Levels start simply and get progressively more difficult at a fairly steady rate. I don't ever recall feeling overwhelmed at any point and play remained very enjoyable throughout the game. As you progress the game does a good job of introducing you to new concepts that you need to complete the levels like controlling various elements (doors, gravity, etc) through various pressure and trigger switches. Also as you progress you meet and gain control of other characters (besides Thomas) each of which have their own unique properties and abilities. You will often find that you will need to employ skill & logic as well as a bit of trial and error to successful navigate levels but fortunately the game does not punish you for failing, so play always seems fun.
Story 9 I really didn't expect any kind of story from a puzzle platform game, especially not one where the characters are just little shapes, but despite this what I got was a brilliant one. A delightful little story that builds with each level and makes you really care about what happens to your little shapes. Each one has their own unique characters, fears, desires and personalities. Their struggles to survive and escape the unfair system that imprisons them and which is constantly changing the rules in its efforts to defeat them.
Replayability 6 By the end of the game you will have mastered some pretty advanced skills and will remember many of the puzzles solutions, this makes some of the earlier levels feel very easy. The game is of a fairly good length but because its so enjoyable you will no doubt be left wanting more. There are various steam achievements (small black hollow rectangles) scattered throughout various levels and going back to find these will add to the playtime. Levels are re-playable after you have completed them making it a good game for quick casual play.
Overall
8.5 A little gem of an indie game, charming and enjoyable, it leaves you wanting more - would highly recommend.

I have this game for a while already and always thought it's some kind of boring platform game with retro-stylish graphics. Anyway i had some time few days ago and decided to give it a try. To my surprise, Thomas Was Alone proved to be a great, very addictive and a bit challenging title. It has a lot of nicely prepared levels with tons of smart ideas.

Not too hard, not too easy - level design is perfectly balanced.
I got it from bundle of course, just like most of indie games nowadays (which starts to be "pain-in-the-a*s"), but i
wouldn't hesitate to spend £6 on it.

My rating: 8/10

p.s. I loved to bounce on Laura.

“If our brains were simple enough for us to understand them, we'd be so simple that we couldn't.” - Discovering Simplicity in a Complex World

This is a minimalist indie puzzle platformer, but don't let that dissuade you as it touches on human struggles and issues such as individuality and accepting who we are, experiencing and dealing with loneliness, finding and cherishing companionship, discovering and pursuing one's purpose in life no matter how simple or grandiose the dream and leaving a legacy for generations to come.

The music is touching, evoking empathy in the player and making you want to root for the characters in their journey. On top of that, the narration by Danny Wallace is charming and funny throughout the play-through. The gameplay is also well balanced, not too easy or difficult to keep one engaged but not lose sight of the story either.

Very highly recommended 11/10

Thomas Was Alone. Was. But not for long.

This short tale is a heart-warming story of equality, acceptance, sacrifice, and above all, friendship. You may think that the characters in this game are simple rectangles, but they are so much more. Each of them forms a strong character as they strive, as one, to their goal.

They quickly learn to accept their differences; nay, to embrace their differences, using each other’s strengths in order to overcome obstacles and complications which they would never be able to do by themselves, due to their own individual weaknesses and flaws.

Helping them to accomplish their destination, you will be challenged at times, but every time they get one step closer to their collective target will reward you and leave you feeling enthralled.

The game seems simplistic but it flows fluidly and artistically, accompanied with a charming, witty narrative and a beautiful soundtrack. The result: a game that comes together perfectly, filled with emotion and verve.

When I finished the game I found myself wanting to play more of it. Not because it is too short, but because I felt like I had personally connected with each of the characters and I wanted to spend more time getting to know them.

You will laugh, you will cry, but at the finale you will be captivated by this truly magical experience.

Thomas was alone is a game where you play as a multitude of shapes. Despite the simplistic design of these characters, the naration provides each with its own personality that you can really connect to. The game has excelent gameplay, with a varying level of dificulty to each new level.
Pros: Can run well on most slower computers, great character development, fun to play
Cons: Not enough ovals
9/10 would play again

Thomas Was Alone is a great platform puzzler. You have different characters who come in the shape of blocks. Different shapes and different abilities. You must figure out how to use these different shapes and abilities to get to the end of each level. The puzzle portion of the game is definitely closer to the casual end of the spectrum than the hardcore end. However, one of the unique aspects of the game is how shapes of different colors, sizes and abilities can have such a deep story told. Typically puzzle games do not have a strong story, nor does a story without real characters typically take place in games. Somehow, the devs figured out how to put it all together and it really makes the game shine. Great game, great price, great entertainment.

If I had to pick a single word to capture my thoughts about Thomas Was Alone I think that word would be “marvel”. It’s a word that is not used all that much when discussing games and I think that suits this game just fine.

Thomas Was Alone is a puzzle platformer that focuses - to a masterful degree - on game narrative and character development. Now you most likely have seen screen shots of Thomas and find that statement rather out of place, and you would be absolutely justified in that assumption. However, each shape that you control on your journey has their own personality, their own emotions and desires, their own flaws. Every time I load up a level I’m blown away by how much more I connect with a square and a rectangle than I do with every other off the shelf action game hero combined. It is impossible to believe until you play for yourself, but trust me that the writing and character development alone is worth every penny you pay for Thomas Was Alone.

"Thomas Was Overrated," a bit harsh, but somewhat accurate.

I appreciated the voice commentary, it matched the game's style, although I struggled to find a connection between the voice acting and the actual gameplay. What was being said didn't follow the level's puzzle or objective, and sometimes the two were unrelated.

Pros:
-Music is BEAUTIFUL!
-Visuals are basic but in a way stunning
-Voice actor has a pleasant sounding voice
-Utilizes characters strengths and weaknessess
-Develops many different characters efficiently
-Super Claire

Cons:
-Game is too short
-Levels are very simple
-Can be a bit glitchy
-(Sometimes) unrelated commentary
-Character stories/background would end abruptly
-Chris

Overall: Music, voice, art, and sound effects were spot on... Gameplay itself, not so much.

Quite a short game, but worth its money. Engaging story and well rounded difficulty curve that makes it feel easy to do even the most complex levels because you learned all the tricks on the way.

Not challenging because of what i just said, but also full of inventive. Never repetitive.

Has a lackluster 3rd-and-one-half act which is extremely short, Barely more than an epilogue, and threads onto different characters. Could have been polished and made into the sequel, instead of what feels like and half thought addendum.

But i still feel that this game is to be recommended.

Thomas was alone is a real gem. It's a relatively simple 2D "puzzle" game which is however really deep in terms of content and story. Get it, install it, play it and let it overwhelm you with its amazing voice acting, incredibly interesting story, and fun 2D moves.

Super-recommended!
