"Another 4X game. A bit old by now but a really nice one as well. Re-imagines a lot of the features from Master of Orion series and has space bears!"

About This Game

StarDrive sets a new benchmark for the ‘4X Space Strategy’ genre. Starting with a single planet and a small number of space-worthy vessels, you must venture forth into the galaxy, conquer new worlds, build new colonies and defend your very existence against those who would take what is yours. How you play is your decision. Use diplomacy or brute force. Trade, spy and research your way to galactic domination. Make friends, or create mortal enemies…

The heart of StarDrive is its ship design and combat engine.

StarDrive takes a modular approach to ship design, allowing the player to create custom ships where the composition and placement of ship modules really matters to the performance of a ship.. In combat, if your portside armour is taking a beating, then rotate around and show them the starboard side! Hide behind a friendly capital ship’s shields; warp into and out of the fray, launch fighters, lay mines, and so much more.

This game was never actually finished before it was abandoned by the developer so that he could start work on a second game. The store page continued to promote features that were never implemented for months after it was clear that they were never going to be added to the game. Making matters worse, the developer has demonstrated extremely bad judgment when interacting with customers that shows a lack of professionalism. This combined with a loyal but rabid fan base make this game a toxic property that is best avoided.

Frankly, I love this game. I don't really get some of these reviews for it. The game is not at all like it is still "beta," nor does it have any stability issues. The gameplay is fantastic! Highly recommend it for lovers of space 4x games.

Worst, unpolished variant of a 4x space game since the launch of Masters of Orion III.
Couldn't get over the first 10 minutes cause the game would confront me with impossible controls, an UI from everybody's nightmare and a very unpolished look allover. Waste of good money, sad to say.

StarDrive has a wonderful design and is a 4x game with great playability and potential.

The game has one fundamental flaw ... it tends to lock up and crash deep into a game ... I have yet to get to "Finish" a game.

Until this game gets debugged I cannot recommend it at all.

I love this game. Vanilla or modded it's great. The only thing it's missing is multiplayer.

If you like to explore, or be introduced to new sci fi, then you should like this game. However, WOAH! It is rather complex, very involved, and very interesting. You will lose many an hour on StarDrive, and you will look up from your screen to see the morning turned to night. All in all, a nice RTS, worth a look.

Great game! Interesting 4X, feels like more recent additions, but cheaper, and it just feels more tactile. Probably because of the 2D playing field.

To be clear, I'll say up front that I very much enjoyed this game, played it for over 200 hours, and intend to snap up its sequel as soon as it's available. What drew me to it the most is its innovative and thorough approach to ship design and combat. If you'd enjoy spending 20 thought-filled minutes crafting a customized inter-system war machine, this one's for you. I should add that watching said war machine ply its trade is beautiful and enjoyable as well. I loved almost everything about the design and implementation of the space combat in StarDrive. Its real-time approach encompasses fighters, boarding parties, attack, defense, reinforcements, re-arming, repairing, bombarment, trade, support structures, warp speed and manuevering.

However, I must also acknowledge that this game never overcame a certain lack of polish. Confused AI, glitches, and underdeveloped or dead-ending side stories riddle the game. In order to fully enjoy its excellent space combat system, you must learn how to work with the game's quirks and carefully guide the challenge level into an ideal range with practiced care. I am amazed and impressed with what this game's creator(s) were able to accomplish. At the same time, I can see why its metacritic score didn't make it to the 90s; its great strengths are forced to associate with a series of weaknesses.

I enjoy this game, even the vanilla game can add hours and hours of gameplay. I like being able to create giant hunks of destruction and sendong them at enemy planets. This game really could benefit from Steam Workshop though, I have got some mods from websites which made the game so much mroe enjoyable, having Steam Workshop at a players fingertips would just spike this games enjoyability and replayability. That said its still a fun game to play and I would recomment this for any space strategy lover.

I like it, its moo2 in realtime.
Sad they are jumping to stardrive2, turn based, without supporting stardrive1.
There are plenty of turnbased x4. But at least stardrive1 is stable enough to play now.
Getting a bit tired of the unfixed quirks.
So when you buy stardrive2 - will they just jump to "money grab" 3 ?

A quick summery if you dont want to read the rest of my review.
Yes the game does have its issues and I think it is really bad of the developer to release a clearly unfinished game and then to use the money they make of it to start on a sequel, yes this is really what has happened, but it is a good game. What is so frustrating that it wouldn’t take much to fix the issues, as far as I see them, and make it fantastic. Unfortuanly I have owned the game for several months and no update has come out and I don’t think one will unless no buys the sequel because of all the negative reviews of this one, which basically all say exact same thing.

This game really frustrates me. I like the idea and the game play. I really like the ship building element but due to the lack of different weapons it is a bit limited. The idea behind the remnant is very nice.
That’s the good part but now onto the bad.
For one it isn’t finish and if this is the finished game then there are some major issues with it. For starters even though every different spices has their own ship designs, which I like, they all use the same weapons and that irritates me. I know it makes it easier for stealing tech or giving it as a gift but to me it looks like a cop out.
The story line with the remnant is simply not finished. You build the finial building and suddenly you win and there is no explanation of what they were, where they came from and what happened to them that only powerful robotic ships are left.
The Ai is really predicable and irritating. You can be nice to one spices and get them to ally with you become your friend but if you make one trade proposal they don’t like you can lose all your trust with them in one go just like you weren’t even allies with them and you had just met. If you are allies with someone then that only means they won’t attack you, unless they revoke the alliance, but they will still try and steal you tech and have no consideration about the planets they take.
The game as so much potential and, before I realised that the developer had dropped it to work on a sequel, I was really looking forward to multiplayer to be introduced. I paid £25, ish I can’t remember the exact amount, for a game has been published and then not completed. Having said that the game is good and I like it but after a while its problems have started to really annoy me and I for one won’t be buying the sequel until I know for sure the developers haven’t published and unfinished game again.

I like the game, but it had some performance problems. If you don't have a really good computer, don't buy this. The dev is creating a new game called "Stardrive 2". I wish the dev would work on this game more (especially on optimization) but it seems abandoned. I would be cautious before buying the next game, you should probably see review videos before you buy the next one.

(6/10) (Turn based 4x fans)
(8/10) (Real time strategy fans)

Could have been an amazing turn based game, instead the dive into real time gameplay had some innovation potential but overall served to just bring the overall game down for me, removing the thoughtful nature of play that I am after with 4x games. Instead of carefully planning each turn and building each world, you are constantly under the gun to move as fast as possible and blaze through reflexively. Its a shame because otherwise the style and production of the game is quite high and would have more than carried it for me for a long while.

(Admittedly, I really do not like RTS play to begin with, and my main score reflects coming into the game expecting it to have been a turn based 4x title along genre norms. The second score applies for people who do prefer the more highly energetic RTS style gameplay over turn based strategy)

A scam. Developer developing another game, but it's all just rip and run. Do not buy.

AI is awful. Unfinished game. All of these things I could live with if the Dev hadn't abandoned the project when he found a better engine. No real excuse.

This title has so much potential, but it's still unfinished, in a beta-state, and the developer has abandoned the game and is trying to release stardrive 2, which is incredibly cheeky given the incomplete nature of this title.

This game would be wonderful if it was actually polished into a finished product, but that day is never going to come.
