About This Game

StarDrive sets a new benchmark for the ‘4X Space Strategy’ genre. Starting with a single planet and a small number of space-worthy vessels, you must venture forth into the galaxy, conquer new worlds, build new colonies and defend your very existence against those who would take what is yours. How you play is your decision. Use diplomacy or brute force. Trade, spy and research your way to galactic domination. Make friends, or create mortal enemies…

The heart of StarDrive is its ship design and combat engine.

StarDrive takes a modular approach to ship design, allowing the player to create custom ships where the composition and placement of ship modules really matters to the performance of a ship.. In combat, if your portside armour is taking a beating, then rotate around and show them the starboard side! Hide behind a friendly capital ship’s shields; warp into and out of the fray, launch fighters, lay mines, and so much more.

Key Features

  • Real time gameplay with a seamless zoom from a grand strategic view to a close-up action view
  • Choose from 8 beautifully rendered alien races or design your own to lead into the stars; interact, negotiate and forge allegiances on your way to victory
  • Expand your empire and colonize all kinds of planets, terraform and populate them and build them into specialized centers of trade or industry
  • Research and unlock an array of technologies to improve your military and industrial capabilities
  • Control your ships with classic real time strategy commands or jump into the fray by taking direct ‘arcade’ control of any ship in your empire
  • Create your unique ship designs with the modular ship design system and determine your own fate in battle
  • Create custom fleet formations and set rules of engagement in the easy-to-use fleet editor
  • Steal technologies, incite rebellions, or rob your enemies blind with a rich agent-based espionage system

I still play this game but will never buy another game from this developer.

Didn't take long before this game was abandoned and StarDrive 2 was announced. I paid a good amount of money for a promise of a supported game, a new way of doing, blah blah blah.

It makes me sad to say this, but as the game is no longer being updated, it is not worth it. It is obvious that half of the feature are unfinished. It had great promise, but the game was never finished. If you want to play a great game like this, I recomend Stellaris.

I really would LIKE to like this game. My favorite part about it is the races - they're very cool and very well designed, and have some great animated assets, and I love the take on race customization the game uses.

Unfortunately, however, this game seems to have been thrown together in the 4X space formula without any polish, refinement, or novel central ideas, and the gameplay suffers terribly because of it. I literally cannot get through a full game in StarDrive. Everything is quirky, unbalanced, hard to find, and unpredictable. Even more of a shame considering the ship designer is one of the less obtuse examples I've seen in games like this. With a UI redesign and a lot of balancing and mechanical refinement, this could be a really cool game. But it's not, and the devs have abandoned it, so don't be fooled by the cool races and graphics.

Hello fellow gamers.

When i first saw Stardrive i thought that this will be very cool, a little different 4X game.
At the very first glance we got everything:
- Sci Fi theme
- Space battles
- Development of our Empire
- Ship design

The formula for most 4X games is simple. We explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. Easy right? Most 4X games are turn based- but not a Stardrive. It is real time.
When i firstly heard of it i thought "cool! it will have more dynamics"
Boy.... i was so wrong.

StarDrive is semi finished game.
I know- hundreds of gamers wrote it in their reviews. But i don't mean bugs, no update for.... ever.
I meen there are only few techs, some about 5-7 buildings to go on planets, few ships.
And thats not all!
The galactic is very empty space- sure there are some pirates and aliens but this is about it.
Nothing more.
So what we really get from buying this game?
Pretty decent ship design tool.
O! and the treading cards.
....
Well music is nice but there is no additional soundtrack so we actually have to play this game to listen to it......
And the dynamic of play i was thinking about?
Nope. This game is slower than most of the turn baset games.
So....

Plus:
+ very good alien graphics
+ space looks nice
+ music
+ ship designer
+ space battles are nice
Minus:
- well you bought a demo of beta version of game
- bugs
- no joy
- slooooooooowwwwwww and boring
- where is content ????

I'm big fan of SciFi and i adore 4X genre and i have to say:
Don't buy it. Please. DON'T

Don't buy this - the main quest is bugged (among other bugs), and the developer abandoned the project before adding any game modes other than the initial sandbox mode.

It's a shame - it was a cool idea, but it's unsupported, unfinished, and the developer obviously doesn't care. Ignore it.

Star Drive

This is a pretty decent game. It runs in real time as do the space battles. Ships can be commanded in space battles for full control of targeting.

Ship design is really neat. Hulls come as is and may be filled with all sorts of space combat goodies. THis is a cool part of the game.

Tech research is pretty neat. There are not a lot of techs but what is there is good.

The alien races are all distinct and filled with personality. There is also cusomization for your race if you want it.

The developer moved on to their next game, Star Drive 2, and they are very active in that title. This game has all that is needed to wage war and conquer the stars. It may be missing some fleshed out things but the game is definitely playable and fun.

Oh, and ground battles are turn based with control over each troop. Pretty cool.

I preordered this game years ago before launch and played a bit of the beta. It was fun but I encountered a number of gamebreaking bugs. It was a beta so I figured I would shelf it for a bit and wait for release. Upon release I encountered the same bugs. Three years later it looks like they haven't done much to fix this game.

BEWARE THE ABANDONWARE

I should have left this review a long time ago, but better late than never.
This game was abandoned, unfinished and buggy, by it's developer.
It is believed to be nothing more than a springboard with a "take the money and run" idea for the development of Stardrive 2, a game that is currently practicing horrendous consumerism.

Tl;Dr
Do not buy any Stardrive game.

The game itself is great.

The guy making it, Zero, is a f*cking C*nt that promised us a significant amount of features that never got around. Instead he took the money made from the game within the first months and bailed.

This "review" is long overdue and won't save another soul, ever, but it serves the purpose of giving Zero the middle finger, which he deserves to recieve, mentally and physically.

I'll be up front right now, I like this game. It offers a unique experience and I find myself coming back again and again to play it. That being said I would not reccomend it unless it was on at least a 75% sale as the game is not complete and pretty much never will be because the dev dropped it.

Now you can play the game, isn't broken you can play and finish a scenario but this game was abandonned and a lot of promises that were made were broken by the dev so there is lack of content and after a few games you get the gist of how things will go and the prospect of losing goes out the window even on the hardest difficulty. The Blackbox mod can fix this a bit but overall it's a problem. In addition you will suffer a lot late game due to poor optimisation that even a really powerful system can't power through. I put a lot of time into this game on my 3570k which was overclocked to 4.8Ghz and on the larger universe settings I still had significant slowdowns and juttering which can and will render the zoomed in direct fleet control unplayable. It basically leads to you sending massed fleets into enemy held systems and hoping that the AI can take care of things.

The best thing to do is the leave the universe size to normal and use the Blackbox mod to limit the number of ships the AI can have because if you don't you will quickly find that the AI will continue to pump out droves of ships and each one will make the game run a bit worse after a certain point. That being said if you have a recent Intel based chip(Sandy or newer) your system should easily be able to handle around around a thousand ships in the universe without significant slowdowns.

Probably my favorite thing about the game is the ship customization. In a word it's friggin cool and it really makes you feel good when your ship you designed is good enough to take on three or four ships of an equivalent class of ship and come out on top. That is I think the thing that really keeps me coming back because I keep finding better and better ways to build my ships and it feels really engaging.

To wrap up this game had loads of potential but it was let down by poor choices made by the dev in both the way they made the game and how the handled the abandonment of it. It is in no way worth the standard $30 asking price, you can pick it up for the unique experience but only if it's less than $10.

Could of been a great game if it ever had been finished... I have loved playing this game from the moment i picked it up in early access but the game crashing bugs have ruined it for me and with no further progress being made on it makes this game as well as other games by this Dev to risky to be of intrest.

Pros:

-Great ship costimization, I have a titan design soly made to disable other capitals while the smaller ships chew it up.
-enjoyable diplomacy
-flexible in game play

Cons:

-Game crashing bugs
-some what confusing UI, till you get used to it.
-not so many techs (can be ether or but i like alot of choice.)
-some of the races were not fully finished when i played and im not going out of my way to look at them again
-unfinished

so all and all good game if it was actually finished, i dont recommend getting this or the next one as it looks the same...
