About This Game

1998. HALF-LIFE sends a shock through the game industry with its combination of pounding action and continuous, immersive storytelling. Valve's debut title wins more than 50 game-of-the-year awards on its way to being named "Best PC Game Ever" by PC Gamer, and launches a franchise with more than eight million retail units sold worldwide.

NOW. By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors even the emotions of both friends and enemies.

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people he cares about are counting on him.

The intense, real-time gameplay of Half-Life 2 is made possible only by Source®, Valve's new proprietary engine technology. Source provides major enhancements in:

  • Characters: Advanced facial animation system delivers the most sophisticated in-game characters ever seen. With 40 distinct facial "muscles," human characters convey the full array of human emotion, and respond to the player with fluidity and intelligence.
  • Physics: From pebbles to water to 2-ton trucks respond as expected, as they obey the laws of mass, friction, gravity, and buoyancy.
  • Graphics: Source's shader-based renderer, like the one used at Pixar to create movies such as Toy Story® and Monster's, Inc.®, creates the most beautiful and realistic environments ever seen in a video game.
  • AI: Neither friends nor enemies charge blindly into the fray. They can assess threats, navigate tricky terrain, and fashion weapons from whatever is at hand.

HL1 is 3x better imo. HL2 feels like it doesn't follow the previous game at all! I had no idea what the backstory was because I skipped a wall that mentioned a few things, and had to go to the wiki to find out what happened. Yes, really. This game just doesn't feel like half-life. The original just had a much better atmosphere.

That being said, it got pretty nice combat and platforming and overall a good game, but not a good HL game.

A lot can be said about Valve's Half-Life 2. In fact so much has been said that it feels redundant just talking about it. Yeah we all know the games amazing story, and the tight controls, and stunning graphics. I mean JESUS look at those graphics! But what really makes HL2 great, besides just the stuff mentioned? We know its the shining crown jewel of gaming, but do we really know why? The short of it is that the game is extremely solid on all fronts, something that truly can't be said about many games. Everything flows, in a way that AAA games still can't come close to, so much to an extent that I feel people sell Half-Life 2 short, even the people prasing it. Sure games today are made for a wider audience and they get that with shiny graphics and a more streamlined cinematic experience. The games are easier because they don't strive to highlight certain mechanics and instead focus on a wide apeal-story based narrative that can be experienced by everyone. But is that really the case? Truly think about it. HL2 doesn't need to pull you out of the world you have been experiencing in first person to show you a cutscene or have the "tutorial guy" , you never follow a map marker or preform a one button stealth takedown. Were made to think AAAs today are much better because theres more there, bigger maps, better graphics, and new toys all come with having as much cash that the companies making these games are willing to pump into them. We feel a sense of evolution that comes with the silver wraping under the christmas tree and are ready to easily consume more and more of the worlds were presented with because everything is made for that reason only. On the contrary Half-Life 2 did something more. The world is experienced by the player. The story is subtle and it only unwraps itself as you peel back the layers of the Half-Life world and see what Gordon Freeman, or you the player, has missed in the last 20 years. Half-life 2's story has a dark tone, with creative interiors and exteriors that never stray from the world being presented to you, refusing to abandon the lore of the world or dampen the experience all while flowing perfectly with gameplay and mechanics. The basics of Half-Life were run and shoot. And they sure as hell kept true to that in HL which is why the game is still so critically acclaimed. And HL2 does this but even better. Its a game truly worth of a sequel, being able to take what the predecessor had done and improving on every way while making each aspect better. The world you run and shoot in is the same world you live in. What AAA games take the time to truly accomplish the blending of the main concept of their game with every other aspect or even use it as one of their misguided selling points? The game Half-Life 2 truly speaks for itself in many ways. Once you have heard one person say it you have probably heard it all. And while we might not have listened well enough for this message to rub off on other games, the effects of HL2 will be felt by those who truly look for a reason to love it.

I still think this is the best FPS out there. It's single player, yes, but for many of us who enjoy a good story and mechanics over multiplayer features, this games, on this genre, has no equal. Gonna make this review short, as I don't think I can add much more to what is already known.
Graphics and AI are old, sure. But still looking great compared to some games nowadays. But the main focus of this review is the story behind the game. The lore. The map designs. Everything is so well done that you almost feel it's a movie and not a game. If you like FPS, this game is a must. My recommendation, however, is to first play HL1. Then get this one

Continues the story from Half Life 1, but it's not a direct continuation as there was some time passed between the end of Half Life and and the start of Half Life 2. So a lot has changed in that period of several years.

But yeah, gameplay is pretty much the same and graphics is significantly better, though I heard that Valve decided to re-do and upgrade the engine than leave it as it was when released in 2004, I haven't played the original when it was using the original source engine it was released with.

I also now know where they got those zombie skins for them CSS zombie escape and horde game modes from! :P

Anyone who has Steam ... no, a PC ... must play Half-Life 2. It is not just a recommendation, it is an obligation. No, a requirement. This is simply the definitive PC game. A masterpiece, when you complete this amazing story you truly feel like it has been an adventure. In my honest opinion, anyone who is a PC gamer and has not played this game is underqualified.

The gameplay is incredible, the story is phenomenal, the soundtrack is great, the voice acting is outstanding. It is an overall outstanding experience that everyone should play through at least once. It will be an experience will you never forget, lead the people in the fight against the evil Combine military dictatorship and rise humanity up from the ashes of near extinction.

And if you see Dr. Breen, tell him I said; "♥♥♥♥ YOU!"
